Maintenance

Overhaul

Majorengineoverhauldetailsarenotcoveredin theOperationandMaintenanceManualexcept fortheintervalandthemaintenanceitemsinthat interval.Majorrepairsshouldonlybecarriedoutby Perkinsauthorizedpersonnel.YourPerkinsdealer oryourPerkinsdistributoroffersavarietyofoptions regardingoverhaulprograms.Ifyouexperience amajorenginefailure,therearealsonumerous afterfailureoverhauloptionsavailable.Consultwith yourPerkinsdealeroryourPerkinsdistributorfor informationregardingtheseoptions.

Performmaintenanceontheenginewiththe equipmentintheservicingposition.Refertothe OEMinformationfortheprocedureforplacingthe equipmentintheservicingposition.

PressureAirandWater

Pressurizedairand/orwatercancausedebris and/orhotwatertobeblownout.Thiscouldresultin personalinjury.

Thedirectapplicationofpressurizedairor pressurizedwatertothebodycouldresultinpersonal injury.

Whenpressurizedairand/orwaterisusedfor cleaning,wearprotectiveclothing,protectiveshoes, andeyeprotection.Eyeprotectionincludesgoggles oraprotectivefaceshield.

Themaximumairpressureforcleaningpurposes mustbebelow 205kPa(30psi).Themaximum waterpressureforcleaningpurposesmustbebelow 275kPa(40psi).

FluidPenetration

Pressurecanbetrappedinthehydrauliccircuitlong aftertheenginehasbeenstopped.Thepressurecan causehydraulic fluidoritemssuchaspipeplugsto escaperapidlyifthepressureisnotrelievedcorrectly.

Donotremoveanyhydrauliccomponentsorparts untilpressurehasbeenrelievedorpersonalinjury mayoccur.Donotdisassembleanyhydraulic componentsorpartsuntilpressurehasbeenrelieved orpersonalinjurymayoccur.RefertotheOEM informationforanyproceduresthatarerequiredto relievethehydraulicpressure.

Alwaysuseaboardorcardboardwhenyoucheck foraleak.Leaking fluidthatisunderpressurecan penetratebodytissue.Fluidpenetrationcancause seriousinjuryandpossibledeath.Apinholeleakcan causesevereinjury.If fluidisinjectedintoyourskin, youmustgettreatmentimmediately.Seektreatment fromadoctorthatisfamiliarwiththistypeofinjury.

ContainingFluidSpillage

Caremustbetakeninordertoensurethat fluids arecontainedduringperformanceofinspection, maintenance,testing,adjustingandrepairofthe engine.Makeprovisiontocollectthe fluidwitha suitablecontainerbeforeanycompartmentisopened orbeforeanycomponentisdisassembled.

• Onlyusethetoolsthataresuitableforcollecting fluidsandequipmentthatissuitableforcollecting fluids.

BurnPrevention

Donottouchanypartofanoperatingengine. Allowtheenginetocoolbeforeanymaintenance isperformedontheengine.Relieveallpressure intheairsystem,inthehydraulicsystem,inthe lubricationsystem,inthefuelsystem,orinthe coolingsystembeforeanylines, fittingsorrelated itemsaredisconnected.

Coolant

Whentheengineisatoperatingtemperature,the enginecoolantishot.Thecoolantisalsounder pressure.Theradiatorandalllinestotheheatersor totheenginecontainhotcoolant.

Anycontactwithhotcoolantorwithsteamcancause severeburns.Allowcoolingsystemcomponentsto coolbeforethecoolingsystemisdrained.

Checkthecoolantlevelaftertheenginehasstopped andtheenginehasbeenallowedtocool.

Ensurethatthe fillercapiscoolbeforeremovingthe fillercap.The fillercapmustbecoolenoughtotouch withabarehand.Removethe fillercapslowlyin ordertorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkali.Alkalican causepersonalinjury.Donotallowalkalitocontact theskin,theeyes,orthemouth.

Oils

Hotoilandhotlubricatingcomponentscancause personalinjury.Donotallowhotoiltocontactthe skin.Also,donotallowhotcomponentstocontact theskin.

Batteries

Electrolyteisanacid.Electrolytecancausepersonal injury.Donotallowelectrolytetocontacttheskinor theeyes.Alwayswearprotectiveglassesforservicing batteries.Washhandsaftertouchingthebatteries andconnectors.Useofglovesisrecommended.

FirePreventionandExplosion Prevention

Allfuels,mostlubricants,andsomecoolantmixtures are flammable.

Flammable fluidsthatareleakingorspilledontohot surfacesorontoelectricalcomponentscancause a fire.Firemaycausepersonalinjuryandproperty damage.

A flash firemayresultifthecoversfortheengine crankcaseareremovedwithin fifteenminutesafter anemergencyshutdown.

Determinewhethertheenginewillbeoperatedinan environmentthatallowscombustiblegasestobe drawnintotheairinletsystem.Thesegasescould causetheenginetooverspeed.Personalinjury, propertydamage,orenginedamagecouldresult.

Iftheapplicationinvolvesthepresenceofcombustible gases,consultyourPerkinsdealerand/oryour Perkinsdistributorforadditionalinformationabout suitableprotectiondevices.

Removeall flammablecombustiblematerialsor conductivematerialssuchasfuel,oil,anddebrisfrom the engine.Donotallowany flammablecombustible materialsorconductivematerialstoaccumulateon theengine.

Storefuelsandlubricantsincorrectlymarked containersawayfromunauthorizedpersons.Store oilyragsandany flammablematerialsinprotective containers.Donotsmokeinareasthatareusedfor storing flammablematerials.

Donotexposetheenginetoany flame.
