INDUCTION LIGHTING 15 How Does Induction Lighting Operate? Aside from the method of coupling energy into the mercury vapor, these lamps are very similar to conventional fluorescent lamps. Mercury vapor in the discharge vessel is electrically excited to produce short-wave ultraviolet light, which then excites the phosphors to produce visible light. While still relatively unknown to the public, these lamps have been available since 1990. The most common form has the shape of an incandescent light bulb. Unlike an incandescent lamp or conventional fluorescent lamps, there is no electrical connection going inside the glass bulb; the energy is transferred through the glass envelope solely by electromagnetic induction. In the most common form, a glass tube (B) protrudes bulb-wards from the bottom of the discharge vessel (A). This tube contains an antenna called a power coupler, which consists of a coil wound over tubular ferrite core. In lower-frequency versions of induction systems, the lamp consists of two long parallel glass tubes, connected by two short tubes that have coils mounted around them. The antenna coils receive electric power from the electronic ballast (C) that generates a high frequency. The exact frequency varies with lamp design, but popular examples include 13.6 MHz, 2.65 MHz and 250 kHz (in physically large lamps). A special resonant circuit in the ballast produces an initial high voltage on the coil to start a gas discharge; thereafter the voltage is reduced to normal running level. The system can be seen as a type of transformer, with the power coupler forming the primary coil and the gas discharge arc in the bulb forming the one-turn secondary coil and the load of the transformer. The ballast is connected to mains electricity, and is generally designed to operate on voltages between 100 and 277 VAC at a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. Most ballasts can also be connected to DC voltage sources like batteries for emergency lighting purposes. In other conventional gas discharge lamps, the electrodes are the part with the shortest life, limiting the lamp lifespan severely. Since an induction lamp has no electrodes, it can have a very long service life. For induction lamp systems with separate ballast, the service life can be as long as 100,000 hours, which is 11.4 years continuous operation, or 22.8 years used at night or day only. For induction lamps with integrated ballast, the life is 15,000 to 30,000 hours. Extremely high-quality electronic circuits are needed for the ballast to attain such a long service life. Such expensive lamps have special application areas in situations where replacement costs are high. Research on electrodeless lamps continues, with variations in operating frequency, lamp shape, the induction coils and other design parameters. Low public awareness and relatively high prices have so far kept the use of such lamps highly specialized. With our proprietary design, AMKO’s SOLARA induction lights are dimmable down to 30%.

Turning our feature into your Competitive Advantage The best maintenance service is no maintenance needed. The planned installation of SOLARA induction lights across 80 office buildings helps reduce maintenance costs by over 60% and energy savings up to 50% over compact fluorescent lamps. With a service lifespan over 50,000 hours, you won’t see another janitor changing a light tube for 5 years.*

*Assuming 24 hours all around lit time for public areas.

CASE STUDY 21 UK Serviced Office Provider The Company owns and operates 80 office buildings in Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester, Leeds, and Birmingham with over 800 customers. The company is also a recognized developer in the regions they operate as a part of the continual enhancement of the region. “Unlike most other property companies we don’t outsource any core part of our business. We employ dedicated Customer Service Teams at our buildings, who operate as general managers for the building, with full responsibility for all day-to-day operations and customer satisfaction. The team will welcome both you and your customers to the building. They hold regular customer forums and 1:1’s to ensure their customer’s needs are being met and deal with all of the maintenance issues at the building, leaving our customers free to get on with their business. These people are invaluable to our business but more importantly they are invaluable to our customers, whose testimonials appear throughout this website.”

Customized Solution • SOLARA Induction Lighting System is planned to replace the current outdoor building signage which uses fluorescent light tubes. • The current solution requires maintenance onsite on average every 18 months using a crane and between three to four contractors. The costs associated to maintenance starts from £1,500 to £3,500 depending on the location and the time required for the job. • Replacing the fluorescent light tubes with SOLARA induction lamps will reduced the required maintenance cycle to once every 48 months (proposed) and we wish to reach the ideal target of once every 60 months. This will reduced the work required by more than 60%. • The second phase of replacement is planned for the indoor fixtures, where our new 250W thin tube is employed with reflector fixtures to give a bright, but elegant and natural light to the interior. This solution will be coupled with a centralized dimming system that can be paired with a schedule timer or photo sensors to maximize energy efficiency during daylight hours. • We currently have two other corporate customers that are also looking into the signage replacement who are in the fast food and petro-station retail business. We have developed a new 300W round tube that will fit their signage more effectively, satisfying their lumens output requirement and light distribution inside the fixture. This customized lamp will not be available to everyone until the end of 2007.

The highest class of racing demands the most reliability and flexibility

Race control lies at the very heart of every racing event, monitoring and supervising all stages of the practice, qualifying, and race sessions. Facilities vary between different circuits, but all require features essential to allowing the Race Director and his staff to make the right decisions to keep things safe, legal and to schedule.

CASE STUDY 23

International Racing Event Committee The Committee conducts and manages the world’s most renowned racing event and the highest class of auto racing, that are held usually on purpose-built circuits, and in a few cases on closed city streets. There are 17 races in 2007, 9 are outside Europe. “During a [Race] weekend, race control lies at the very heart of [the Committee], responsible for monitoring and supervising all stages of the practice, qualifying and race sessions. Facilities vary between different circuits, but all will have several key features essential to allowing the [Committee] Race Director and his staff to make the right decisions to keep things safe, legal and to schedule.”

Customized Solution • SOLARA Induction Lighting System is used inside the Race Control Facilities as their backup lighting system. • The Committee travels to 17 different locations for this racing season, and sometimes they find the location’s race control facility to be inadequate and lacking. They approached our distributor for a solution. • The traveling made traditional arc lighting solutions difficult as it may damage the light source during shipping. Currently available fluorescent light sources are limited in output and size. Our 400W SOLARA induction lamp was up for the job to provide a reliable, mobile and high output light source. • The lamps were supplied with our tunnel lighting fixture with a IP 65 rating. We even made the airline travel case to go with the complete system for the customer, and the shipment was sent directly to the Committee’s next racing venue.

How do you continue expansion in the face of energy shortage? With over 20,000 tunnel lamps already installed in China’s newly constructed highways, we’ve helped reduce the energy need to support the massive expansion of the nation’s transportation infrastructure and the overhead of future maintenance expenses. Our battery equipped emergency lighting option makes installation much easier without additional wiring and backup generators.

CASE STUDY 25 China Fujian Province Highway Tunnel Project The Province wanted a reliable and long life lighting solution for the numerous tunnels constructed along the new highway linking Fuzhou and Beijing via Jinan, Xuzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Taizhou. It runs to approximately 2,390 km, and, on a map, runs southeast towards Nanjing and Hangzhou before turning south-southwest at Taizhou. In the Fujian province, there are 13 tunnels of various lengths, including the Meihuling Tunnel of 5.6km long, currently the longest highway tunnel constructed in the country.

Customized Solution • Our subsidiary company that handles domestic sales and distribution, FJK, provided tunnel fixtures and emergency lighting fixtures to the province. • Induction lamps are very suitable for tunnel lighting because it offered the benefits of • Long service life • Lowered maintenance • Less damage due to vibration from passing traffic • Better illumination and distribution • Lowered installation cost and material • Color temperature from 3000K to 5000K • Our emergency lighting fixture comes with a battery inside the fixture, and can switch immediately from AC to DC power in the event of a cutoff in electricity. It provided the additional benefits of • Eliminating the need of a secondary backup lighting system (CFL or LED), thereby makes redundant wiring and routine check up of the backup system unnecessary • Instant on/off provides no disruption in service – offering absolute safety to the drivers and operators • Individual batteries makes installation easy

Hotel Renovation and New Wing Construction in Malaysia The Hotel was recently acquired by a prominent businessman in Malaysia with the intention of renovating it into a modernized boutique hotel targeted for tourists and personal use. The property sits on three acres of hillside land and houses 350 rooms, with 200 more planned for the new wing expansion. “We plan to charge USD$40 to $50 per night for the budget tourist who does not need the amenities of a spa and swimming pool since we are situated so near to beaches and nearby islands. We need to find ways to keep costs to a minimum and keep a high turnover rate to maximize the operation of the hotel.”

Customized Solution • SOLARA Induction Lighting System is planned for exterior and interior lighting of the hotel. • Induction lamps will be placed at the hotel lobby and entrance with high ceilings, while CFL’s are to be installed in the hallways and the rooms. • Induction lamps are planned for the building’s exterior lighting as floodlights for the Hotel’s corners and exterior walls at the ground level. Our self-ballasted 40W lamp with E26 socket can be easily installed on the landscaping, providing light to the path walks. • SOLARA induction lamps are also planned for the proposed indoor 24 hours parking lighting with dim mable ballasts paired with motion sensors. The lamps will be dimmed to 50% normally and increased to 100% when the sensor picks up motion. The long service life also reduced the maintenance cost.

CASE STUDY 27

Taiwan Inspection Equipment Manufacturer The Company is the forefront and award winning leader in the design and production of Automated Visual Inspection Systems employed by many high tech industries such as semiconductor manufacturing, LCD panel makers, and PCB manufacturers. “We use the technologies of pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and neural network to combine optics, hardware and signal processor for “Machine Vision“ The ability of Machine Vision is much better than human’s eyes in high speed and detailed measurement aspects. Machine Vision can produce the same quality as human’s eyes and lasts longer.”

Customized Solution • SOLARA Induction Lighting System is replacing the main inspection lamps used inside the equipment currently supplied by a German competitor. • The current solution requires an engineer visit when one or multiple lamps failed. The equipment carries a three to five year warranty and the lamps are installed inside the equipment, requiring a qualified internal engineer to go onsite for lamp replacement. The costs to the company varies from 5,000 NTD to 25,000 NTD depending the customer location, where in some cases, international travel is required. • Replacing the competitors’ product with SOLARA induction lamps will effectively fulfill the equipment’s multi-year warranty completely, therefore reducing engineer visits due to lamp defects to nearly zero. • The German competitor also offered to the Company a similar induction lamp. But when reviewed by the Company, their product was found to have a lower than required lumens output and a more than expected price premium. • Amko actually provided the Company with a custom specification lamp where the emphasis, as requested by one of the Company’s technical engi neer during one of our earlier visits, was placed on achieving >92 lm/W for the lamp.

INSTALLATION 32 Installation Amko operates a policy of continuous development. Amko reserves the right to make changes and improvements to any of the products described in this document without prior notice. Under no circumstances shall Amko be responsible for any loss of income or any special, incidental, consequential or indirect damages howsoever caused. The contents of this document are provided “as is.” Except as required by applicable law, no warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, are made in relation to the accuracy, reliability or contents of this document. Amko reserves the right to revise this document or withdraw it at any time without prior notice.

For your safety Switch on and off safely – Do not unplug any component of the unit without properly disconnecting the ballast from the power outlet first. Make sure the unit is grounded. Use only AMKO SOLARA components – SOLARA Induction Lighting Systems are designed specifically to work with each component of the system. Please do not use any outside components or enhancements with the system to prevent damage to the unit. Dimmable ballasts – Our dimmable ballasts and dimmers are designed specifically to work with SOLARA Induction Lighting Systems. Do not use any unapproved or incompatible components or enhancements with the lighting system. Use sensibly – Use only in the normal circumstances and environment that is clean with good ventilation. Do not use near fuel or chemicals. The key to the long service life of induction lighting systems is proper heat dissipation, and it should be observed when installing the unit. The average surface temperature of the lamp may reach temperatures from 60 degrees Celsius (140F) up to 75 degrees Celsius (165F), while the surface temperature of the ballast may reach up to 60 degrees Celsius (140F). The heat sinks and brackets may be hot spots with higher temperature. Allow the unit to cool down before handling. Water resistance – Your unit is not water resistant. Keep it dry. Fixtures with IP 65 ratings or higher can prevent your unit from getting wet.

Installation Tips When installing the lamp unit, please check to make sure that the bent mercury reservoir is not pointing upwards. The maximum allowance for an angled installation is 45 degrees. Do not expose the lamp to temperatures greater than 110 degrees Celsius (230F) and the electro magnets (aka transformers) to greater than 120 degrees Celsius (248F). Lamps to be installed in temperatures less than -20 degrees Celsius (-4F) requires special customization to the unit from the manufacturer, and should be specified before ordering/purchasing the unit. Handle the lamps with care – the glass is fragile. Use gloves if necessary. When installing the electronic ballast, please ensure that the placement of the ballast will not expose the ballast to temperatures greater than 65 degrees Celsius (150F) or it will degrade the service lifespan of the unit. The ballast is designed to accommodate ±10% of voltage irregularity. Only qualified personnel in your country (certified electrician) may install or repair this product. If you are installing the unit to a fixture that is not provided by AMKO, please consult with our technical personnel for installation advice and suggestions.
