T HE SI S DESI GN

THE FLOATING MARKET | Jakarta, Indonesia Fifth year design unit at Deakin university. Exhibited at Melbourne Federation Square 2015 A+B exhibition AIA Victorian Sustainability Award for Masters Flooding in Kampung Melayu, Jakarta has become so common for residents that the attention it receives from the government and local media is non existent. The area floods at least 5 times a year during the wet season and has major floods every 5 years. These major floods can reach 12 metres above normal levels displacing thousands of citizens. Currently mosques hospitals and public areas become over crowded with the influx of people simply needing a place to sleep the night. This building attempts to provide beds and space for over 500 families affected during a disaster. The building will also serve a second major purpose, to give the people of Kampung Melayu a community public space they currently lack. The extreme density of the area means there is no open area available for public activities, markets or events. forcing residents to sell their wares on the side of the road. The building will therefore as a bridge market connecting both sides of the river through trade and social spaces. It has an emphasis on the connecting with water and how important the Ciliwung river is to the people in the area. Currently there is a sad build up of rubbish along both banks of the river that spill out into the community. By providing a space that clearly views the Ciliwung it is hoped that this will inspire locals to clean up and better their community. Giving usable, sturdy infrastructure to an area like this can be just the right catalyst to force a powerful cultural change that will enhance the lives not only of the people who use this building, but of everyone connected to this beautiful kampung.

IN OF F I CE

LEXUS PAVILION | MELBOURNE CUP Detail 3 in collaboration with Joost Baker Temporary structure built for Lexus at the Melbourne Cup Status: Complete, re-used in 2016 Role: Responsible for bringing Joost’s sustainable and modular Melbourne Cup marque concept to reality. In charge of production of everything from concept/marketing material to schematic and construction drawings for the builder. Designed as a sustainable green temporary structure, the Lexus Pavilion is a great example of re-useable architecture. I was contracted to help document and realise Joost’s prototype concept for a green building. The overall building has three levels while the interior is large enough to fit a Lexus car on the ground level. Glazing modules with operable louvers enclose the interior space and allow controlled cooling through natural ventilation. A rooftop bar with Joost’s signature vegetation is also included on the third level to give the best views of the race that stops a nation. Working with a passionate client allowed me to throw as much of our knowledge and creativity into the project as possible, resulting in a successful building outcome.

477 COLLINS STREET | MELBOURNE CBD Working at Grimshaw Architects 40 story premium grade commercial tower Role: Mid-level architectural documenter/graduate In charge of structural design package and its coordination with architectural intent for the entire building. This involved attending weekly consultant meetings with the structural engineers (AECOM) and constant Aconex correspondence through sketches, skype calls and phone calls. Production of concrete profile plans for all 40 levels of the tower including the basement from early DD phase, through tender documentation and finally construction drawings. Co-ordination of services with service engineers and how this interacted with structural design while having minimal impact on architectural design, e.g structural penetrations and location of services. This was achieved through constant consultation between structural engineers (AECOM) and service engineers (ARUP). These meetings were mediated by me and other architects, an extremely complex task for a new tower. Production of construction piling plans, structural details and precast/ insitu concrete elevation plans fully co-ordinated with consultant models through BIM clash detection procedures.

THE LAB | MELBOURNE Working at Detail 3 with Joost Bakker New train station in the heart of Frankston City Status: Benched Role: Concept design development and production of Schematic Design Report. This included the creation of a revit model, producing all schematic diagrams/imagery as well as formating and putting the report together. The Lab was a unique and ambitious project envisioned by Joost as a larger scale lexus pavilion. The concept was to create a largely modular ‘greenhouse’ that not only created zero waste, but also took waste from surrounding businesses and converted them into energy. The steel frame and glass building contained a mushroom clad event space, ground level f&B retail and offices on the second floor. The crowning jewel was a restaurant on the top floor that sourced all of its ingredients from the greenhouse. This included fish, mushrooms, vegetables and hanging grape vines that cascade down the facades of the building. To power all this, a generator fueled by recycled plastic was to be installed in the basement plant room while also drawing energy from solar panels placed on buildings nearby. The entire building was designed with sustainability and green practice in mind. It was intended to be an exemplar building that showcased what can be achieved in true sustainable architecture.
