Check Yourself Out! Every woman is beautiful. And what every woman needs to know is that breast cancer is Beatiful if… You Check Yourself Out. This edition ilovefair pays tribute to the hundreds of thousands of Lebanese women that beat cancer by early detection through self-examination. Though iloveflair’s tribute begins with this edition, it doesn’t end here—our new charity organization, Beatiful, will be providing year-round education, support and fund raising for The May Jallad Foundation,The Faire Face Foundation and the Lebanese Breast Cancer Foundation to help women beat breast cancer and contribute to the advancement of scientific research. The goal of Beatiful is big: educate no less than 1,000,000 Lebanese women this year about the self-exam steps that can aid in early detection in beating breast cancer. Each one of us has been touched by this battle—be it directly or indirectly. It knows no race, no religion, no political preference or personal opinion. And the only way to completely beat it, is to band together with the determination of not allowing it to take another one of us again. Every woman that beats breast cancer is one more soldier on our side. Every woman that detects it early is a stronger soldier in our army. Divided, we are victims. United, we are the victors. If you beat breast cancer, then you are among the leaders of our army.

spir’it: (noun) The principle of conscious life; the vital principle in humans; an intangible essence of a person; a magnetic energy that attracts and emits emotions of elation and happiness that cannot be qualified into words.

Laila Ajam doesn’t have spirit.

She is spirit.

As beautiful as she is, the core of her beauty isn’t her hair, her eyes or her wardrobe; it is her strength. A spirit of such a force that through it not only has she beaten cancer, but she’s supported numerous women to beat cancer as well. Ajam’s life continues to impress and inspire the hearts of many, especially among breast cancer patients. A spokeswoman, a philanthropist, an advocate and above all, an example, Laila is every woman, as well as an original unlike any other woman. 34


T

his quote defines Leila Ajam’s pure soul; ‘’ Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible’’. In that case, what drives you to wake up every day?

I simply love life and this is what drives me to work every day. I live the future not the present. It’s my personality trait that helps me to live for the future and let go of the past. We go through challenges in life where a strong will is needed, how do you make that determination last? Well, deep inside I’m a truthful and energetic person. I was special ever since I was a kid and it was known in my family that people used to gaze at me differently than my other siblings. It’s the energy and spirit that defines me. Besides that, I’m liberal person and I love people unconditionally despite of their age, gender, and religion. My husband supported me well enough to create a strong personality for me. When and how did you find out that you had breast cancer? I went for my yearly check up at my obstetriciangynecologist at AUH in Beirut. I thought I was fine but while I was getting my Mammogram, the doctor explained that I needed an ultra-sound. I had no idea why so I spent 4 hours at the hospital that day until they found something on my right side. You could not feel or touch it, as it was buried deep under the tissue. That’s when they decided to do a biopsy which revealed it was breast cancer. My health was really good and I didn’t feel any pain or anything wrong with my body. I’m an athletic person, I run and swim. One moment I was swimming as part of my exercise routine, and the next, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. For a woman who’s health conscious and an early riser, I thought there has to be some mistake going on.

After finding out that you have been diagnosed, what were your main concerns? First comes first, my hair was my main concern because I was young to go through this illness and lose my hair. Second, I was scared from pain. Last but not least, like anyone else I was afraid of dying. The news was hard to accept and left me no choice but to surrender to God. It took me two days to make peace with my case. How does it feel to be a breast cancer survivor and how did breast cancer change your outlook of life? Of course I’m lucky to be one of the survivors; I was also very determined. I obeyed all doctor’s orders like a good school student. Fighting to survive changed my perspective in life to become more patient, take things lightly and enjoy living. What are your strength and weakness in times like this? My strength is related to people’s devotion, love and support. There are no words to describe the amount of positive and healing energy friends and family surrounded me with. On the other hand, my weakness is all about the pain because I hate being sick and getting hurt. Going through Chemotherapy was hard, also the food tasted funny and I missed living my normal life.

Being a breast cancer survivor will make you change your lifestyle and old habits to something completely new. What are your hobbies and how do they have impact on your daily life? I love running the marathon and swimming. I have athletic bone structure that can run for miles without getting tired. I also love hiking, the sound of the water and fresh air. Adding to that, I love spinning while listening to loud music. My friends tried to convince me to do yoga but it’s just not me. I love jogging at 6 am listening to house music that my son Ahmad uploads for me. He even records little messages over the tracks ‘Yalla mama, faster faster, Go Go!’ I also love traveling to new exotic places. Traveling enriches my soul and spirit - I’ve already visited five continents. Of course, my husband is my favorite traveling companion. We are on the same page where we both love exploring new cities. Any advice you would like to give women who are fighting Breast Cancer or any life battle? I believe nothing is impossible as long as you have the patience for it and everything would work out eventually with strong will and determination. They just have to be strong enough to beat anything that life may throw their way, no matter how hard the condition is. Survival is instinctual so you need to bring out the best in your physic to the battle ring. I strongly encourage every woman to do the breast cancer self-exam at least once a year. Early detection will give you more chances to survive. What is Flair to you?

With each experience, there’s a lesson behind it. What did this experience bring to your attention? I became stronger in taking crisis more lightly. Unlike nowadays where I find solutions to everything and enjoy life drama free.

I hear what most people don’t hear; I chose to see what enriches my soul, not my eyes. I tune in to all frequencies, the near, the far, the distant and the fading. When people escape the wetness of the rain, I enjoy its sound; when I look at the sea, I admire its color, I feel its breeze to be suddenly interrupted by my friends who would be looking at the trash bag by the shore instead.

What is your biggest strength? My biggest strength is that I can count on myself. What situation has made of you a survivor? Being in a coma, I survived the experience of death twice in my life. What makes you a winner? When I can achieve serving the community. What are your fighting tips? I am aware of my potential. I am a dreamer. I am a persevering person. What is your vision for the perfect society? People to be healthy in their mind and body. What is your definition of happiness? When I feel peace with myself. Do you consider yourself lucky? lessandro Calligaris is known for his strategic planning and technical expertise. In your opinion, how did your experiences influence the designs and what’s Calligaris secret behind its roaring success in furniture design? My interest in design began when I started visiting exhibitions and fairs many years ago. Design in Italy has a very long tradition and for my experience, the Italians and Scandinavians who wrote some of the most important pages in the history of interior design, are those who became my main source of inspiration. It is thanks to their work that I discovered the importance of investing in consumer friendly design in order to guarantee a future to my company. There’s a common ground between most furniture companies and their goals, what makes Calligaris’s vision exquisite compared to other competitors? Calligaris vision embraces the idea that furniture is an expression of culture and a reflection of personal choices. Since the rhythms of our lives have become very intense, people feel the need to spend their free time in relaxing and comfortable environments, surrounded by soothing colours which create the right mood. All our product have the intrinsic capacity of adapting to the needs and requirements of customers in any part of the world. In the past people did not have the opportunity to explore different furnishing styles and would settle for local solutions. Today consumers are cosmopolitan and love the idea of living in an international environment. We give them this possibility. Calligaris designs are recognized to be creating new ways of living. Over the past few years, designs have marked change compared to old designs; can you elaborate more on the prompt changes that emerged over the years and what could be the real magnet inspiration behind that change? What really changed in design over the years has definitely been the concept that a product should answer to the needs of the consumers. For example, a table should embody style and function. We know that not everybody can afford a large fixed table which can accommodate 8, 10 or 12 people. That’s why we also offer smaller tables, which seat 4 to 6 people but can extend to 10 or 12 according to the need of the moment. It is of vital importance to combine functionality, effortlessness and design. As noticed, there has been some expansion in furnishing solutions whether Chairs, tables, furniture, beds, sofas, furnishing or decorative accessories. What is the most material Calligaris use that makes the finishing priceless and what comes first- the materials or the design idea? Every Calligaris product is the best result of a perfect combination of materials involved and design. We cannot say exactly which one comes first, as both of them are essential. Our R&D department is very much in tune with our style. It is made up by both internal and external resources, collaborating on all elements from research to design and finally implementation of all activities related to the creation of a new product. We communicate and bounce ideas around with designers, we look at what objectives of the business are and

the actions needed to create successful products. Of course we must have a good grounded knowledge of the market and be able to interpret current trends but most importantly future ones. Every year we oversee hundreds of projects born out of our briefs or from impromptu proposals, but only ten or so will ever become Calligaris products. Few only know about the pros and cons in this kind of industry, what are the main challenges that Calligaris face and how do you overcome this challenge? In the last few year Calligaris has been facing the economic worsening of the Italian markets; despite the increasing difficulties in maintaining its prominent role, the company keeps going on, thanks to continuous researches and improvements in design and innovation, that enables to offer the best combination of quality and price to our consumers. What would you say are your main influences when conceiving a piece of work? I think that the piece should be uncomplicated and recall the essential forms of nature. The secret is to capture the inspiration of nature and to transform its colours and textures in chairs and tables which are beautiful to the eye, to the touch and have the ability to convey a personal identity. The values implied in our brand and our gaze towards the future let us perceive the best inspiration and creativity. Describe your style of work; do you work in a sustainable way? What part of the process that excites you the most? In virtue of its sensible raw material supply policy, Calligaris has been awarded the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. The main objective of FSC is to promote an environmentally friendly management of forests and woodland all over the world. The FSC certification guarantees that Calligaris wood products comply with all international regulations, since raw wood comes from safeguarded forests where wood cutting is kept strictly under check. Besides the quality management system operated by Calligaris is in compliance with the standards UNI EN ISO 9001 for the activities of Design, Manufacturing and Trading of Mass Produced and on consumer specs furniture fitting for home, office and community. My favourite part in the production’s process is the setting up of the prototypes, in which ideas and materials take shape and gather in an unique model. What would you say about your values and ethics when it comes to designing? The identity of Calligaris is our philosophy of contemporary design. An expression of life, style, evolving attitudes and changing needs. We proudly declare our sense of belonging to Italy. To its values of quality, beauty and service. Why do you think Calligaris is internationally successful? Calligaris products are a guarantee of quality and creativity at an accessible price, design that is contemporary, flexible, and intelligent. Calligaris is internationally successful also because it is able to serve all major export markets with a constant presence providing a first-quality service with fast delivery terms. In order to achieve this aim, many best sellers items are kept at stock, for example in Beirut for Lebanon, while special orders can still be delivered pretty fast, thanks to the organization of frequent shipments from Italy. Our sale organization is based on retailers located in over 90 countries. Calligaris has over 70 single-brand stores throughout the world, set up following a display concept that finds its greatest expression in their flagship stores in Milan and Paris. We live in a digital world where pressure of excellence and customer satisfaction is viral and hard to maintain the image on the long run. How do you work on that challenge and any changes with the rise of technology in the making? We think that the customer satisfaction is vital for the brand, we support the final consumer constantly through our retailers all over the world that are trained to satisfy the customer’s needs and help them during and after the choosing and buying process. We are present in all major digital and social networks: our corporate website has currently 5 language versions, we have a Facebook page in Italy and France and an international Youtube page. We support our web presence with digital advertising in Italy and in the major export Countries. From all your pieces, which one has a special value for you personally and why?(kindly provide us with a high-resolution visual of the piece stated) Wood has always been a part of my life. When I was a young boy, I used to spend most of my time at my grandfather’s woodwork shop and watched him turn gigantic pieces of wood into chairs. Wood is a material which has always been present in my life. I think that one of the new products I prefer the most is the CLAIRE chair that embodies ash wood and upholstery remembering the Nordic design. What is Flair to you? Flair means innovation, creativity and vibration of concepts in design and fashion. A very interesting opportunity to catch up internationally.

“Seeing [breast cancer survivor] Melissa Etheridge in concert with her bald head, wailing on her electric guitar, she was a force to be reckoned with,” Kathy recalls. “I realized it wasn’t necessary to hide. Nobody should be ashamed to have cancer.” 40

motionally, what were some of the more difficult things you had to face going through treatment and during recovery?

After my hysterectomy, I went to work on a film as soon as I got out of the hospital. I was lucky that I had someone to do my makeup and hair every day. But when the shoot was over, I had to do that myself. I’m not much on wearing makeup anyway, so that was a real chore, especially when I was feeling weak. I was so pale, and I had no eyebrows. It sounds like a silly thing, but I had to work at looking good so I could feel good about going out in public. After the first couple rounds of chemo, I began to feel very tired, so I stopped working and just focused on getting well. With breast cancer, it was a much more emotional experience for me. My TV show (Harry’s Law) got cancelled because our audience was “too old,” and then my breasts got cancelled. I felt old and unwanted. What made you decide to undergo a double mastectomy? When my oncologist called with the news that I had breast cancer, I didn’t miss a beat. I said, “Take ‘em both off.” I then spent two weeks looking at all my options to make an informed rather than an emotional decision, but I decided to go with my instincts. I had seen my mother and my niece, who both had breast cancer, go through it with one breast removed. They always seemed to struggle with posture and brassieres. I didn’t want to worry about getting cancer in the other breast. I wanted to be free.

Have you experienced any lasting side effects? My surgeon removed quite a few lymph nodes under my arms, but thankfully I only have mild lymphedema. While you’re dealing with the cancer, that’s what you’re focused on, so lymphedema often isn’t talked about until well after surgery, and sometimes not at all. People with lymphedema can be frightened to discover that they will have to deal with this condition for the rest of their lives. I still require treatment for the lymphedema to keep my arms from swelling. Dr. Emily Iker of the Lymphedema Center in Santa Monica, has been treating me regularly. I also need to wear compression sleeves on airplanes, and sometimes I wear them while driving long distances. How has being a two-time cancer survivor affected your career? You know, it doesn’t come up a lot. On American Horror Story, we were doing a trick shot through my right arm and my waist, focusing on my hands. There was a shadow on the side of the frame, and it turned out to be my “breast.” I said to the director, “Look, I can take this out. It isn’t real.” He was a bit embarrassed, but I assured him it wasn’t a problem. I went to a corner, pulled out the prosthesis, and we got the shot. On the red carpet recently, some­one asked me if I could have any magical power, what would it be. When I said I wanted to have the power to cure cancer, the interviewer’s mike dropped about a foot, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw the camera sag on the camera­ man’s shoulder. It just made me laugh. Nobody likes to talk about cancer.

What one good thing has come from your cancer experience? I recently had an opportunity to have breast reconstruction, but at the last minute I decided I was feeling so good that I didn’t want to go back to surgery, to bed rest, to being on pain medication. I realized that I already had what I wanted most, which was to be happy, have energy, work, be with friends, and live life. What advice would you give to people recently diagnosed with cancer? It’s no picnic, but it’s not necessarily a death sentence either. Go through the initial panic, and when that dies down, focus. Listen to your doctors, and ask questions; the more you know, the better. But stay off the Internet at night worrying. Rest instead. Be good to yourself. Use your chemo time to visualize yourself becoming healthy, no matter how silly the fantasy may seem. The rest of the time, try not to dwell on cancer. You are not your cancer. It doesn’t define you. You can decide who you want to be. On the positive side, cancer can be a wake-up call. Take the opportunity to enjoy life and be a kinder person. You’re still at the party, so have a good time until last call.

Some foods actually increase your risk of cancer, while others support your body and strengthen your immune system. By making smart food choices, you can protect your health, feel better, and boost your ability fight off all sorts of disease.

FOCUS ON PLANT-BASED FOODS Plant-based diet includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A plant-based diet means eating mostly foods that come from plants like vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and beans. The less processed these foods are—the less they’ve been cooked, peeled, mixed with other ingredients, stripped of their nutrients, or otherwise altered from the way they came out of the ground—the better. Keep in mind that you don’t need to go completely vegetarian. Instead, focus on adding “whole” foods, which are foods close to their original form. Just as important, try to minimize or reduce the amount of processed foods you eat. Eat an apple instead of drinking a glass of apple juice, for example.

BULK UP ON FIBER

CUT DOWN ON MEAT Research shows that vegetarians are about fifty percent less likely to develop cancer than those who eat meat. So what’s the link between meat and cancer risk? First, meat lacks fiber and other nutrients that have been shown to have cancer-protective properties. What it does have in abundance, however, is fat—often very high levels of saturated fat. High-fat diets have been linked to higher rates of cancer. And saturated fat is particularly dangerous. Finally, depending on how it is prepared, meat can develop carcinogenic compounds.

Your immune system keeps you healthy by fighting off unwanted invaders in your system, including cancer cells. There are many things you can eat to maximize the strength of your immune system, as well as many cancer-fighting foods. But keep in mind that there is no single miracle food or ingredient that will protect you against cancer. Eating a colorful variety gives you the best protection. •

Boost your antioxidants. Antioxidants are powerful vitamins that protect against cancer and help the cells in your body function optimally. Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium.

Eat a wide range of brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Colorful fruits and vegetables are rich in phytochemicals, a potent disease– fighting and immune–boosting nutrient. The greater the variety of colors that you include, the more you will benefit, since different colors are rich in different phytochemicals.

Flavor with immune-boosting spices and foods. Garlic, ginger, and curry powder not only add flavor, but they add a cancer-fighting punch of valuable nutrients. Other good choices include turmeric, basil, rosemary, and coriander. Use them in soups, salads, casseroles, or any other dish.

CHOOSE YOUR FATS WISELY A major benefit of cutting down on the amount of meat you eat is that you will automatically cut out a lot of unhealthy fat. Eating a diet high in fat increases your risk for many types of cancer. But cutting out fat entirely isn’t the answer, either. In fact, some types of fat may actually protect against cancer. The trick is to choose your fats wisely and eat them in moderation.

Another benefit of eating plant-based foods is that it will also increase your fiber intake. Fiber, also called roughage or bulk, is the part of plants (grains, fruits, and vegetables) that your body can’t digest. Fiber plays a key role in keeping your digestive system clean and healthy. It helps keep food moving through your digestive tract, and it also moves cancer-causing compounds out before they can create harm.

Fats that increase cancer risk – The two most damaging fats are saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats are found mainly in animal products such as red meat, whole milk dairy products, and eggs. Trans fats, also called partially hydrogenated oils, are created by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid and less likely to spoil—which is very good for food manufacturers, and very bad for you.

Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In general, the more natural and unprocessed the food, the higher it is in fiber. There is no fiber in meat, dairy, sugar, or “white” foods like white bread, white rice, and pastries.

Fats that decrease cancer risk – The best fats are unsaturated fats, which come from plant sources and are liquid at room temperature. Primary sources include olive oil, canola oil, nuts, and avocados. Also focus on omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation and support brain and heart health. Good sources include salmon, tuna, and flaxseeds.

Until a man can master what she’s not saying, he will never master women.

She goes on a drastic vocabulary fast… Women are talkers by nature—whereas the average man uses 7,000 words per day, the average woman goes 13,000 words further, for a whopping 20,000 by bedtime. That’s almost 3 times more than men. Part of this is thought to be due to a physiological factor—Foxp2, a protein in the brain that is higher in female humans than in male humans, though in the study was found higher in male rats than their female counterparts. So when she suddenly cuts down her words by a third, Houston, you have a major problem. Of course, the male’s instinctive reaction is to ask, ‘is something wrong?’

If she starts to speak, but the only thing she says is ‘nothing’, then uh-oh… If her reply is ‘nothing’, KNOW it is a BIG BIG SOMETHING, and you are the cause— not only are you the cause, you most likely caused it on purpose to tick her off (at least in her mind, and if it is the truth in her mind, forget about it—now, it’s your truth too). In such a scenario, your best bet is to apologize and then find out what it is that you did on purpose to tick her off. A simple, ‘you know, I really didn’t know you were that bothered from me, and just so you know, getting you upset is the last thing I’d want to do.’

Following that, if she breaks out in a rapid spitfire of sentences, you can sit back and relax, as her wrath is no longer wrapped in a nuclear missile headed straight for your coordinates. However, if she still sticks to, ‘that’s fine’ or ‘it’s okay’ or ‘whatever’, only one of two possibilities exist: 1. You got caught where you shouldn’t have been or with someone you shouldn’t have been with, or, 2. She has proof of you cheating or having an affair with a specific woman and is about to bait you in a surprise confrontation involving that woman. Either way, you best use your time commuting to the confrontation to confess before your shirt hits the fan. However, if she repeats back the statement you just made in the form of a question… Women don’t repeat what men say in general—that’s because men don’t say much. Women have an innate ability to filter out most of a man’s conversation— from the mundane technical issues he’s having at work to the play by play details of a football game to the pseudo-romantic blurbs he guises as foreplay when he’s really aiming for sex, microwave style— under 2 minutes on defrost at most. So when she does actually look at you and repeat the last statement you made—or worse, repeat your last statement three times in a row in the form of a question, you have just tripped the bomb timer’s countdown.

For instance, you say, ‘I really like your friend Leila.’ Your woman’s head then turns towards you, and she replies, ‘You really like my friend Leila?’

Tick, tock. Tick. Tock. You have 30 seconds… what do you do? What DO YOU DO? You must jump in exactly at the end of her question and take your statement back. You do not pass Go, you do not collect $200 and you do not even pause to breathe. Reflexively, you just say, ‘I didn’t mean it like that’ or ‘you misheard me’ or laugh like you’re being tickled by the Care Bears and end it with ‘I was just kidding, come on!’

Patience is a virtue, unless you’re a woman… then it’s a plan being put in action… Communication and verbal expression is a woman’s way to attempt to relay what she’s feeling and thinking to her partner. His response in return gives her a sense of validation and assuredness that he understands her. So when she stops talking, she’s doing so because the stew’s been cooked—i.e., her plan for you has been set into motion. And it isn’t necessarily an evil, hurtful or terminal plan in any way, but at its least, it is one that will force you into a corner you most likely hadn’t seen yourself getting caught in— and the only escape is her willingness to let you off the hook. The new BMW X4 is based on the technical blueprint of the BMW X3, but displays an extroverted sporting character, taking dynamics to a whole new level. Development project Leaves Digital Mark The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) – an innovative way of working which allows architects and engineers to generate and exchange collaborative digital models – provided the backbone for the complex execution of London-based architects Zaha Hadid and longterm collaborator Patrik Schumacher’s newly completed project in the historically charged Jung District in Seoul, South Korea.

Reference is made to the use of the BIM method several times in the press material released by the architects: ‘Parametric modeling techniques enabled to continually test and adapt the design to an ever-evolving client’s brief as well as to accommodate unforeseen site conditions and local legal and regulatory requirements. Such technologies also participate in reassessing the architectural design process and streamlining the coordination among consultants.’ Though the Dongdaemun Design Plaza bears the architects’ signature sensuous formal vocabulary and futuristic monumentality, it lays out intricate spatial and organizational structures, engaging in the staging of social interactions both within and around its perimeter. The building, as it deftly handles numerous functional and configuration considerations, comes together in a powerful and expressive way, shaping a framework for a dynamic system to grow and to adequately express the crosscurrents of Seoul’s notoriously fast-paced urban life. This large-scale urban development project covers a centrally-located 65,000sq-m area and is totaling as much as 87,000-sq-m of useful floor space. Hadid’s DDP is designed to accommodate a diverse programme, comprising a convention and an exhibition hall, a conference room, a museum, educational facilities, lounge areas, office and retail spaces as well as a 350-space parking lot, all distributed across eight levels, four of which are underground. The creative team claims the mixed-use complex building has an honest contemporary twist and provides a respectful architectural response. It tackles interventions of varying scales and scopes, leading to the creation of attractive

urban green spaces with lasting values. Putting aside the architect’s keenly contested provocative agenda – often regarded with incomprehension by her exasperated peers – the Dongdaemun Design Plaza is especially striking for its exterior envelope, clad with over 45,000 mosaic-like perforated metal panels. The density and overall logic of the perforation patterns are precisely defined by parametric controls, creating visual effects depending on the lighting conditions and seasonal changes. Regardless, the building – which falls in with other Korean projects at the forefront of technological innovations – seems to embody a pragmatic application of diversified skills and certainly reflects the practice’s unique passion for outstanding designs.

The Jane

DIVINE DINING EXPERIENCE! Housed in a red brick structure that used to be a chapel for a military hospital in the Groen Kwartier in Antwerp, ‘The Jane’ is the brainchild of Michelin Star Chef Sergio Herman and Nick Bril conceived with the collaboration of Piet Boon architects. With Piet Boon’s intent on investing in the artisanal feel of the existing historic chapel, propelling it forward with a contemporary underground atmosphere, .PSLAB was a natural choice as a collaborator. Headquartered in Beirut with ateliers in Stuttgart, Bologna, Helsinki and Singapore, .PSLAB is a site-specific design house and manufactory that is invested in the production of sensory experiences. The process and outcome of ‘The Jane’ project is a testimony to its approach to design as a full-rounded service.

Art-Itecture PSLAB worked closely with Piet Boon, Sergio Herman and Nick Bril, in every step of the design, conceptually and technically, producing life-sized prototypes to sculpt bespoke lighting that compliments the existing space and devises the desired setting precisely. The renovation of the chapel was not charged with the idea of a makeover, but was focused on bringing out the existing qualities and materials of the space. For the interior, the designers selected rich high quality materials such as natural stone, leather and oak, prompting a specific palette for the lighting objects. Upon entering the heavy chapel doors, guests are greeted with a series of white corrugated cylindrical lighting objects. The lit brass interior of these cylinders gives each a rich deep yellow glow that contrasts the white, stone and black interior. Moving inward to the center of the ground floor dining area, the use of brass continues in a set of table lamps that rise above the level of the seating, adding definition to the spatial layout. At this point, the focal point of the space also starts to appear: a massive 12x9m radius chandelier suspended over the dining area that contributes to the ambient divinity of the chapel interior. Weighing 800 kilograms and suspended from one point in the ceiling, the chandelier dips to 2.75m above the ground, communicating a very human scale, and then disperses back up to fill the vaulted space above the dining area with tubular tentacles each ending with a glass bulb. The chandelier fills the space with more than 150 glass bulbs visible from the ground and the upper bar level. Over the bar on the upper level, a set of projector lights are mounted on steel beams installed across the width of the chapel. The sharp, black finish of this setup adds a layer contrasting with the rough material of the chapel interior without conflicting visually with the focal chandelier. Similarly, not all the lighting installations were made to pop out. On the contrary, projectors laid out to accentuate specific instances in the original form of the chapel interior and its newly acquired function are designed to hide next to its massive columns. These projectors, painted in white to blend with their white background, provide the technical supplement to the sculptural interventions. The result is a scenic experience seamlessly combining artistry and engineering expertise.

Mary Sarkissian is a metal artist born and raised in Kuwait, currently residing in Lebanon. She took her love of metal from the background of her family business. Interior designer by education, she uses laser technology, to create stainless steel wall sculptures, which she then forms & shapes by hand. A combination of factors such as Mary’s passion for metal, her background in interior design & the talent of her crafty hands, created an unplanned collection which turned from a hobby to an actual business. The first Iron Lady collection was a unique, one-off yet simple art pieces that provoked the attention. These marvelous pieces were exhibited at several renowned exhibitions, such as the international design exhibition, INDEX, in Dubai.
