Founder’s Message

4

Every day, in our schools, we open young minds to ideas and possibilities. Our students’ achievements speak to our success in helping them unlock their potential. As educators then, we have but one direction to move towards – from great to outstanding…and beyond. Illustrate by example, the qualities we seek to equip our students with, to demonstrate leadership and commitment every step of the way. Empower yourself – own and possess your purpose to be outstanding in every respect. Take calculated risks and push boundaries, knowing that this is how we will grow. You have it in you. There is exceptional leadership and drive in our schools and I believe that we are well on our way to achieve our purpose. Let’s go beyond outstanding…our future awaits us. Sincerely,

Sunny Varkey Founder and Group Chairman, GEMS Education

Message from Dear Students and Parents, Welcome to the 2015/16 Yearbook! Looking through the pages, it is so apparent that everyone has thoroughly enjoyed their year and been involved in some truly outstanding activities and experiences. It has been a joy to see all of this in action as it happened, as well as now being able to take a look back through the photographs and the tremendous achievements of all our students. As CEO, I feel hugely proud of what we have achieved – some of the highest examination results at GCSE and IB, all of which have been higher than UK and world averages; outstanding inspection outcomes across all phases of the Academy; and a level of engagement with parents which has seen the highest numbers attending even more events! We have continued our focus on providing new, innovative and exciting opportunities for every student in the Academy. As a genuine international community, it is always a pleasure to see the level of interaction between our students, how they work so closely together and how they achieve the tremendous outcomes that they do. Our competency approach has really benefitted everyone in preparing them for the next stage in their learning, and was a key highlight within our inspection this year. Coupled with other aspects of innovation, the Academy is considered to be leading the way on so many fronts. 5 Our focus on Performing Arts and Sport has now resulted in a much higher level of performance and accolades. You will have witnessed many of these first hand – outstanding productions for students in all year groups, representation in the World Dance Championships, and a trophy cabinet now full of sporting awards and achievements. To finish in second place overall in the Dubai School Sports rankings is a significant achievement and one which we hope to better next year! I truly believe that we have a very strong sense of community within the Academy. House systems, primary classes, year groups, and tutor groups all combine to make a hugely diverse, exciting and global community. Even though we cater for a large number of students, I get a clear sense from them that they have and enjoy being part of their own smaller family groups, and that they are genuinely cared for as individuals. It is this maturity that has emerged in the Academy that has made the biggest difference. May I take this opportunity to thank all our students, staff and parents for creating such a vibrant, exciting and stimulating environment for learning and a genuine community spirit within the Academy. I also want to wish our IB Graduates all the very best as they embark on their university journeys across all parts of the world - exciting times ahead for all of them. If you are also leaving us this year, I hope that this Yearbook will be a permanent and fond reminder of your time at the Academy and I thank you for your contribution. For everyone else who is returning, I hope that you have a fabulous and well-deserved summer break. Given everything that we have been involved in this year, it is difficult to know what to include in the Yearbook. So, we have turned it over to the experts again – the students themselves and what they wish to share as their own personal highlights of 2015/16. Michael Gernon - CEO and Principal

Messages from The Secondary School has had another remarkable year with much to remember and celebrate. Our GCSE results were simply outstanding and our first set of IB results showed that our students are achieving well above International averages. We know that this year’s cohort will be even better! Of particular note is the impressive array of university destinations for all of our IB students - an amazing testament to the talent and aspirations of our IB Graduates.

We have had another fantastic year with many things to celebrate and recognise. Firstly, I would like to recognise and celebrate the academic performance of each and every Primary student. Every individual has made phenomenal progress this year and should be very proud of their achievements. Since introducing Performing Arts into the Primary phase at the beginning of the year, we have enjoyed huge success in this area. Taking part in many performances including ‘Twelfth Night’,

6

‘Story through the Seasons’ and ‘Matilda’, students of all ages have excelled and performed with confidence and creativity. We have continued to participate competitively in many sporting events across Dubai and being recognised as the 2nd Best Sporting School in the UAE is a huge achievement. Our Swimming Squad has also grown in strength and depth, achieving First Place in the Middle East Unity Cup with 132 medals! Throughout the year we have also seen our Key Stage 2 students enhance their learning with our ‘Bring your own Device (BYOD)’ approach and all the Primary students have embraced the ‘GEMS Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)’ with passion

Our students are telling us that they enjoy learning at WSO. I think that there are several reasons for this. Firstly, I believe that they feel valued, safe and supported within the WSO community. Without this, I do not believe that students can learn effectively. Secondly, I believe that our curriculum is designed so that learning is relevant and engaging. Students will not develop lifelong learning attributes, or enjoy learning, if they are not able to find their lessons interesting and relevant to real-life. Finally, I believe that our teachers are fostering a pioneering spirit within our students. This is evident when taking the time to speak to our students; they enjoy being challenged, being asked to come up with new and innovative solutions, and being given opportunities to show what they can do. This requires skillful teaching, and I am proud to say that we have the finest team of teachers that I have ever worked with here at WSO. Our teachers really care for their students and it is clear that our students know it.

enjoy looking through this year’s edition of the Yearbook.

A particular highlight whilst leading the Secondary School is the continuing support that I receive from both students and parents each day. The comments that we receive, including from our many high-profile visitors, often centre on the unique learning atmosphere within the Academy, and the strength of the relationships between our staff and students. It is this collective support for our ethos that brings out the best in the Academy: engaged, productive, innovative and happy learners. I really do hope that you will be able to see this reflected in this Yearbook.

Sarah O’Regan – Primary Principal

Damian Bacchoo – Secondary Principal

and determination. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Primary teachers, as well as our support staff and administration staff, for their invaluable contributions. I hope you

Welcome Message Over 4,100 students spent this year at the Academy. An average academy day is 7 hours long and there were approximately 186 working days this year. That’s 5,388,200 students hours spent in the Academy in total. This yearbook now brings together 5,388,300 hours of effort, perseverance and dedication on behalf of all the students at our Academy, from large events such as World Book Day to small celebrations such as the Unsung Heroes. I am so proud to have been a part of this incredible year and student body. This year, I have worked with Ambassadors from Secondary on several initiatives – redesigning the pastoral system, getting recycling bins installed, distributing food packs to workers – and one thing I can say for sure is that there is so much promise and potential in every student of the Academy. You are brilliant - thank you for everything that we have achieved together this year. I hope that this year has been one where you have come another step closer to realising your dreams and potential. Like anything in life, I am sure that this year has come with its trials and tribulations – but it is okay - learn from them, put them behind you and let us make next year even better! Munira Rajkotwalla - Head Girl I have had the privilege of serving as Head Boy for this year and like President Obama, I am coming to the end of my second term. This year has been a crazy one for me, full of growth, development and learning. The theme I am going to give this year is ‘identity’ because it has been a year of personal development of my own identity, but also witnessing identity on a much larger scale - learning how to lead, learning how to teach and, most importantly, learning how to learn. This year has been host to some of the most memorable events in my academic life that have led to my own personal growth – something I never thought was possible going into the first year at a new school. Through the events of the year, such as International Day, Sports Day and the WSO Talent Show, I have seen students show pride in themselves and their identity through expressing their talents, interests and characteristics. Students who sit quietly in class might just happen to be the greatest singers you have ever heard! So, it is through this journey of developing our identity that we can truly unleash our potential. Unlike President Obama, I have a third term awaiting me after the summer and I can only hope that this final term leads to more development for myself, for our Academy and for you. Enjoy the summer - you have earned it! Muraad Ahmad - Head Boy

Onyx We are proud to lead Onyx House across the Academy. It has been an absolute privilege this year to see the students grow personally, emotionally and physically, whilst consistently demonstrating the WSO core values. Onyx students are resilient and persistent learners, but are always courteous and considerate members of the community. Together, we support and encourage one another, raising self-confidence so we can all strive to achieve our best. Our students demonstrate courage in the face of challenge and wisdom in decision-making. These qualities have ensured that Onyx House is a guiding force for all our students! 8

Being a member of Onyx House is about individual commitment to a group-effort. That is what makes the team work and is the strength of our House. Through this unity and understanding of collaboration, wonderful things can and have been achieved. Each student is committed to giving their best. We are very thankful for the contribution of each and every member of our House! Peter Stoddart - Secondary Head of House & Danielle Garvey - Primary Head of House “Being in Onyx is amazing. It represents strength. We work together like a team. When I earn a house token, I share it with everybody in Onyx from FS to Year 6. I love being part of the Onyx team.” – Uno Dikturk, 3K ‘’I love Onyx because everyone is kind to each other.’’ - Moustafa Fouda, 1L

9

Emerald What an amazing year for Emerald House! As Heads of Emerald House, we are extremely privileged to have experienced our students flourish in all aspects of Academy life. Emerald students have a strong sense of identity and thrive on healthy competition, embody the WSO competences, and are truly appreciative of the culture in which we live. In Emerald House, we teach our students to love and respect each other. They strive to show great determination and resilience in times of challenge, which enables them to always try their best. Our students are nurturing, and are always willing to help and guide others. This creates the family ethos and atmosphere within the House.

10

We pride ourselves on our team spirit. We recognise that every individual is an important part of our House, and that the happiness and wellbeing of all creates a learning environment where everyone can achieve. Our students have truly worked together in harmony this year and have created precious memories that will remain forever in our hearts. We know that collectively all Emerald students will achieve their full potential and become genuine global citizens. We have been on an amazing journey this year and are very proud to have been there every step of the way. Hayley Snee - Secondary Head of House & Alana Gaffney - Primary Head of House “I love being in Emerald house because we are so competitive yet supportive, if we lose we cheer for the other house and if we win we cheer for ourselves and the others.” Lola Martinez - 4B “Emerald is the best and we always care for each other like a family. We stick together!” Daisy Hopkinson - 3A

11

Diamond As the leaders of Diamond House, we are so proud of the achievements of our students this year. We have had the honour of spending time with such amazing young people, and this makes our role an absolute pleasure! Watching the Diamond Family grow and develop is a source of enormous pride for both of us. Diamond students pride themselves on their contribution to the WSO learning community. Our students work hard each day to improve educationally, socially and personally. The sense of pride and belonging associated with Diamond House binds the students together with a community spirit that enhances their learning experiences. All of our students bring something unique to WSO but there is something very special about the students in Diamond House. Our students have proved time and time again that they are determined, resilient and brilliant. They thrive under pressure and always do their best, even in the face of adversity. It is truly our pleasure to serve as Heads of Diamond House and we are so proud of the students and their amazing achievements. We look forward to another year full of fun, progression and learning. “GO DIAMONDS!” 12

Victoria Tranter - Secondary Head of House & Gary Rowan - Primary Head of House “I enjoyed the cultural breakfast because we got to try all the traditional foods of the UAE and they were delicious!” Fatima Palacios - 4D “I loved seeing how all of the organic vegetables were grown at the farm and tasting how ripe and delicious they were” Kayla Medagoda - 2E

13

Ruby What a year this has been in Ruby House! As leaders of Ruby House, it has been a pleasure to see our students develop their thirst for knowledge, grow as individuals and achieve great things. Ruby students embody the WSO competences and have regularly demonstrated this both within WSO and throughout their local community. Every single Ruby student has played a part in this year’s success. We treat one another with respect and Ruby students develop a strong devotion to learning. The students in Ruby House have been guided and supported by a fantastic team of teachers, teaching assistants and support staff. It has been a pleasure for all of us to build relationships with the students and to see them growing into responsible, confident, and well-rounded global citizens.

14

They have the courage and commitment to strive for success in their learning journey. We know that this hard work and success will continue next year, and in the words of the great Dr Seuss, ‘you have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose.’ Paul Lewis - Secondary Head of House & Bryan McAuley - Primary Head of House

“I have truly enjoyed having an important role in the school as a Pastoral Ambassador. I have learned so much and developed so many qualities, becoming a more responsible individual as a result.” Soha Mulla - 6G “Being a mini TA was a great experience, it showed me how teachers have a big responsibility in helping to shape the future of children. Not many people get this opportunity and it is one of my highlights.” Jasmine Sebah - 6G

15

Enrichment Enrichment is one of the unique features of our Academy. No other school offers such a wide variety of deeper and wider learning experiences as part of its normal curriculum. Our students tell us that this is one of the most exciting parts of their week and that they learn so many new skills throughout all their enrichment choices. “The ‘Horsing Around’ Enrichment was really fun and helped me to be confident getting closer to animals and I am proud of my new skill. I overcame my fears and was a risk taker!” - Sara Al Farsi “I learnt how to do a front flip in the ‘Jumpboxx’ Enrichment!” Ben Smith “I learnt how to cooperate with teammates in trampoline dodgeball and I put new trampolining skills together to form my own routine.” - Karim Mounir 16

17

Nasa 80 students from WSO travelled halfway across the world to the United States, visiting Washington DC, New York City, Orlando and Hunstsville, Alabama. Students enjoyed a whistle-stop tour of famous landmarks in the Capital, followed by a few days in the Big Apple; taking in the sights at Wall Street, Rockefeller Centre, Madame Tussauds and the Museum of Natural History.

18

After a stopover in Orlando to visit the Kennedy Space Centre and Universal Studios Florida, our budding scientists attended a week-long course at NASA Space Camp in Huntsville. Here, they mastered the skills and learned of the extreme conditions astronauts must endure - tackling underwater training simulations and team-based spacewalk operations. An incredible experience that none of them will ever forget! Mr. Erbes

Ecoventure “Ecoventure was a fantastic experience which included fun activities that were engaging. For us, it was good to leave our families for a night so that we could become more independent.” Aliyah Ashraf - 4B “During Ecoventure, you feel like you are out in the wild! You get to choose the activities you want to do, sleep in a tent with your friends and do fun activities all day. I especially liked the water games!” Alex Wiseman - 4B

WSO WSO’s Got Talent Students from Emerald, Onyx, Diamond and Ruby wowed the audience in the Academy’s Auditorium on May 4th 2016. The competition began during tutor time with over 50 acts auditioning in front of their tutor groups. Following this, there was a week of Semi-Finals, which saw just three acts from each House chosen for the final by the House Ambassadors. The standard of the final acts was breathtaking; there were any number of worthy winners. Parents and students had their favourites, however the final decision fell to our four esteemed judges – Miss Lewis, Mrs Bouwer, ‘Magic Phil’ and Dubai 92’s Radio Personality ‘Catboy’. The atmosphere was electric throughout. We also had Mr Adnane from the Islamic Department sing for the WSO Community and before the final verdict, Miss Moxley and Mr Revell also took to the stage to sing together. Diamond stole the show with Millie Page winning the First Prize and Mahin Karani finishing Runner-Up. A magical night for WSO, bring on the next Talent Show! Mr. Patrick - Performing Arts

21

Matilda Year 3 & 4 WSO Theatre Company “Matilda” - May 2016 This year has seen WSO’s Theatre Company expand rapidly across the Academy, reaching down from Secondary to Years 3 and 4. “Matilda,” the Roald Dahl story about a little girl with a BIG imagination, created a lively buzz in Years 3 and 4 with over 300 children plucking up the courage to audition in January. Once weekly rehearsals began, the talent and exuberance from the children oozed out of every session, with each child confidently applying the skills that they had been learning in their Performing Arts lessons with such passion and maturity. Look out for the photos and DVD of the final show…

Twelfth WSO Junior Theatre Company ‘Twelfth Night’ Year 5 & 6 December 2015

24

The WSO Junior Theatre Company enrichment programme achieved a highly successful production for the Year5/6 students. The students demonstrated a creative and expressive interpretation of the Shakespearean language and characters. The progress and professionalism the students developed throughout the process was outstanding. The production attracted an audience of 1,000 over the two evening shows and this was made up of parents, teachers, families and the local community; the production was sponsored by “UDO” (a Street Dance Qualification).

My Life Changing experience in Twelfth Night Shakespeare4Kidz by Jake Wade - Year 6C “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them, Malvolio your time has come...” Over the holidays, we were asked to learn a song and a few lines spoken by the Jester. After the summer holidays had passed rapidly, we went and auditioned for the play in front of the Performing Arts crew. Waiting anxiously and patiently, I finally found out I had one of the main parts. It was so exciting! This was one of my first plays I have acted in, and after that experience, I am sure I will audition next year since it was so entertaining but at the same time nerve-wracking. I love the fact that everyone, especially the teachers, were so enthusiastic and determined. They encouraged me to make the performance work and for everything to fit together. My favorite moments from the play were the embarrassing parts; the part where Olivia thinks she loves me and getting locked up. It’s fun to watch the audience react to everything. Playing Malvolio was fun because the character is silly and not so bright, he makes you chuckle sometimes. In the play it was nice for the other characters to react to me whether it was their actions or expressions it made it professional. It took a lot of patience and it took a lot of work too. It took my week and my weekends up but it was worth the while as its one of the best experiences I’ve had. At the end of the play we had a big celebration to remember our time together. After Twelfth Night we auditioned for three different categories of Dancing, Singing & Acting (Junior Adrenaline, Resonance & Illuminate). I am now in Junior Resonance!

Little Shop of

25

WSO Theatre Company “Little Shop of Horrors” Year 7-12 – February 2016 Following the success of West Side Story, this year WSO’s Theatre Company performed the musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. The production was outstanding and all cast members were praised for their commitment, creativity and professionalism throughout rehearsals and at each performance. This was the first time the cast had worked with a live band, the show also involved complex puppetry to bring ‘The Plant’ to life. Over 1,000 families, staff members and students attended the show over 3 evenings, who absolutely blown away by the energy, enthusiasm and passion the performers displayed. “Hi, my name is Annabelle and I played Crystal in Little Shop of Horrors. I really loved playing my part as she was a sassy, loud and confident character which I have never done before. Playing the part has really helped build my confidence and has transformed my school year. None of this would have been possible without the amazing WSO drama team”

FS2-Year 2 FS2-Year 2 “Story of the Seasons” Show March 2016 “Story of the Seasons” was the Academy’s first ever FS2Year 2 Performing Arts showcase and it proved to be a huge success. Every student, in every class, in every house, performed in the auditorium, with a variety of poems, songs and dance pieces to represent each of the four seasons. Each performance showcased the array of skills that the children had been learning in their Performing Arts lessons and engaged the parents further into WSO’s brand new Primary Performing Arts curriculum. Each year, FS2-Year 2 will have a “Story of…” show and we look forward to seeing what story 2017 brings…

26

Student Quotes: “I liked the Spring Dance because I like to dance and use facial expressions. My favourite season is spring, so I was happy we could dance to this. I liked to perform on stage because my Mum and Dad could come and watch it. I love Performing Arts, especially dancing with Miss Hodge.” Adam Elkabany - Year 2F ”The Story of the Seasons show was amazing. I really enjoyed learning the songs in class, especially the dance moves to the “Seasons song”! I liked being able to perform on stage. I was a little nervous before the show but then I was very happy when I got up on stage. My Mum and Dad came to see the show and they enjoyed it; their favourite part was when we all sang ‘Over the Rainbow’. Piper Pownall - Year 2H “I was so proud to read the poem that I wrote, on stage, by myself. And I wasn’t even scared.“ Norah Emarsdotter - Year 2N

27

Sports Day Primary: There were two weeks of Sports Days at the beginning of the year with all students from FS1 to Year 6 taking part. The students had so much fun throughout the two weeks and put their athletic skills, abilities and flair into action. All Sports Days were supported by our amazing Year 4 & Year 6 Sports Leaders who were outstanding throughout and who ran each station with so much confidence and maturity. This year, the success of our squads has been phenomenal and we have continued to progress and make an impact on the competitors we have faced. Our Primary Sports Awards Evening was a fitting celebration of this success. Faye Rogerson, Head of Primary PE “I enjoyed having responsibility and completing the training we did. In the end my House won!’’ - Sean MacKenzie - 6F

28

“It was a good experience teaching smaller children. It has made me more confident coaching children different sports.’’- Seb Handley - 4F “I thought it was very good helping children to win their Sports Day. I learnt that I am able to help younger children and take care of them.’’- Lorenzo Lemos - 4C

29

Secondary: The annual Academy Sports Days are always eagerly anticipated. Students across the Academy are enthusiastic participants and are avid supporters of their Houses. Secondary Sports Day was held at Sports City and all students competed in a number of events in the hope of being crowned House Champions. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 earned points for their houses in traditional track and field events as well as taking part in the ‘Active Zone’ events. The ‘Active Zone’ was designed and facilitated by Year 12 and 13 Sports Academy students, and ensured that all younger students enjoyed these activities between the other events. The students demonstrated fantastic enthusiasm and sporting prowess. Final events were held at WSO, where the WSO awards ceremony recognised the top three athletes of each event. Diamond House won this year’s overall Sports Day event. - Nathan Holliday - Secondary PE Teacher ‘’Sports Day was a really good event, because everybody was able to compete in a safe environment.’’ - Frederik Solbo - Year 12 ‘’Sports Day was really fun and enjoyable, especially the ‘Active Zone’. I wish we had more time for it.’’ - Isra El Haddad - Year 9

World Book World Book Day is a highlight of our year and this year’s event was no different. Students across the Academy were engaged in exciting activities, including visits from a local author, Julia Johnson, watching the mesmerising Courtyard Theatre production of The Gruffalo, and honing their writing skills with visiting authors from the Emirates Airlines Literature Festival. Parents and older students were guest readers in the Foundation Stage and the week culminated in a fantastic array of costumes as students dressed as their favourite book characters and brought the stories to life. “We loved being authors and making our own book.” – Jenna Watts - Year 4 “We enjoyed meeting authors and hearing their stories. Did you know that Julia Johnson helps animals?” – Emmanuel Ragasa - 2M 30

“I liked reading my favourite book, Handa’s Surprise, with my friends.” – Claire Ward - 1K “I dressed up as the Tiger Who Came to Tea because it’s my favourite book.” – Alfie Muchmore - 1L “I was so proud when I reached 100 books on the readathon.” – Willow Mulder - 2H “I enjoyed reading to my class in Russian, it made me feel proud of my country!” – Anastasia Butler - 4L “We enjoyed making Mr Men stories to read to the FS children.” - Tabitha Monk - 4K “I liked reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff.” – Oscar Copeland - FS2M “I have taken part in the Arabic Reading Challenge and I have to read 50 different Arabic books. Having read so many books, my Arabic reading skills have improved! I can read better and faster. I know more vocabulary and new words” Qassim Saleh, 2J

TedEx Youth

TEDxYouth

32

TEDx is an event held with the spirit of ideas worth sharing. This year, TEDxYouth at WSO brought together some of WSO and Dubai’s most intelligent minds on one stage where they explored in topics ranging from the importance of making mistakes to the possibility of time travel. In a world of constant turbulence, events such as TEDxYouth give young minds the platform and exposure to information that is capable of changing not only themselves, but also the world, for the better. As one of our TEDx speakers, Zoha Naser from Year 11 discussed “The point of this was to get you to see that nothing is truly impossible, with a bit of creativity and scientific innovation. Who knows, the next Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking may be able to create sense out of chaos and use something as trivial as the Flux Capacitor or the DeLorean to get us to the stars.” Munira Rajkatwalla - Year 12

UAE UDO

In April 2016, WSO hosted its first ever ‘UDO Schools Dance Championships’ in collaboration with UDO UAE – the UDO strives to provide dancers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, a platform to positively display their creativity and love for Street Dance. The day started with a series of Dance Workshops, hosted by Nader Musharbash, a professional Commercial Dancer and Choreographer who trained at the prestigious Northern School of Contemporary Dance and Lana Fahmi, a Principal Dancer and Dance Teacher from Sima Dance Company. In the afternoon, the Dance Championships took place with a Primary and Secondary category. In the Primary Competition, Junior Adrenaline were awarded First Place and in the Secondary Competition, Senior Adrenaline were awarded First Place, with Dazzle gaining Second Place. Overall, a fantastic achievement from all Dance Teams at WSO. Check out the photos on Facebook! We can’t wait for the UDO UAE Schools Dance Championships in 2017!

33

Primary Students had a fantastic time celebrating Primary French Day. They dressed up in a French theme; we had lots of stripy t-shirts and berets, but also some inventive students who came as la Tour Eiffel. We all enjoyed taking part in the café role-play, which meant we got to eat some real French goodies for our breakfast… as long as we knew how to ask for them in French, bien sûr! Students spent the day on a virtual tour of France, and took part in lots of engaging cross-curricular activities along the way. They wrote a letter home from a Parisian café, and were able to use their art skills to create some imaginative pieces with a French theme. 34

“I really enjoyed French Day because we learned a lot of new words and tried lots of French food” Mieke - 2C

Social Innovation UAE ‘Week of Innovation’ & Global Entrepreneurship Week January 2016 Students from Year 9 to 11 were invited to employ design thinking and innovation strategies in this one-day ‘social innovation hack-a-thon’. Regional and international businesses based in Silicon Oasis posed challenges linked to the UAE priority areas for innovation. Students were led through a series of exercises and coached by mentors while they developed, refined and pitched their ideas!

World Scholar’s Cup On 11th and 12th March 2016, WSO hosted the largest ever Dubai regional round of the World Scholar’s Cup stepping in at the last minute, following rain damage to GEMS World Academy. This prestigious international academic competition saw Junior and Senior teams compete with more than 500 other students from across the UAE. The event included a visiting delegation from Lebanon for the very first time. The competition featured four exciting events, with students competing in the Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, the Scholar’s Challenge (a 120 question multiple choice exam!) and the always raucous Scholar’s Bowl. Our students achieved some outstanding team successes, achieving silver medals in the Scholar’s Bowl, the Collaborative Essay and the Scholar’s Challenge. 36

There were also a number outstanding individual performances, with students from WSO achieving gold medals in the Team Debate and the Collaborative Essay. The weekend was a fantastic success for all students involved and was ably supported by a number of teacher volunteers from across the History and English Departments. One of the undoubted highlights of the competition was the opportunity for all students to adopt a Jerry, the cuddly and colourful mascot of the World Scholar’s Cup. The next steps for our successful team is the opportunity to represent WSO at the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round in Bangkok, Thailand 26th-30th June 2016. We wish them all the best. I am sure it will be pwaaa-some!* Mr Anthony Loxston-Baker Teacher of History and WSO Team Coach (*Pwaaa is apparently the sound that a happy alpaca makes, as discovered this weekend.)

Quran Competition Reading and understanding the Holy Quran is fundamental to Muslims and therefore it constitutes an integral part of the WSO Islamic Studies Curriculum. WSO hosts educational activities that encourage students to focus on learning the Holy Quran. The Primary Islamic Department hosts an annual Quran Competition for each year group.

WSO WSO Parent Council is an elected representative body of parents from across the Academy. Working in Partnership with parents and Academy staff, we represent the parent body; help shape policies and guidelines; promote progress and positive change across the Academy; continuously seeking improvements in the high standards of education and welfare WSO provides to our children.

38

WSO Parent Ambassadors are a group of volunteer parents working in partnership with the Academy staff and Student Ambassadors to enrich the WSO community in areas of events, eco, Charity, Sports, Pastoral and Performing Arts. We collaborate in organising events and activities as well as supporting students in achieving their goals. The work your children do is worthy of our attention. Here at WSO, we are no different.

International International Day took place on Wednesday 9th December 2015 and was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the diversity of the 100+ nationalities within the Academy. Our amazing Parent Ambassadors in Primary and Secondary worked incredibly hard to organise this. Thank you!

Year 6 19th May 2016 My five years at WSO were some of the best years of my life. I was at the school since it opened and it’s amazing seeing how far it has come. When WSO started up in 2011 it was just a small school with only 1 phase. Since then it has expanded into 4 phases, teaching over 3,000 students. WSO started to stand out in 2012 when our team came Second place in the World Scholars’ Cup. We also brought home sporting trophies in rugby and football after we competed against schools from all over the UAE.

42

During my time here I was part of the Swim Squad and Netball Squad. I had never played netball before so after I had learnt the rules, I tried out for the squad in Year 4. I stayed in the Netball Squad until Year 6. This year, we won the league and tournament. In Year 5, I was the Class Ambassador so I improved my communicating skills by debating and discussing ideas with other teachers. This year, I was a Charity Ambassador so I helped raise money for different charities. We helped people in Kenya and delivered supplies to countries that had suffered from earthquakes and other disasters. There are over 100 nationalities of students in this international school – I met and got to know people from all over the world. I learnt and understood different traditions. One of the best parts of being in an international school is when you learn the cultures of other people. Remember, in the wise words of Albus Dumbledore, “While we all may come from different places and speak in different tongues, our hearts beat as one.” WSO has made a huge impact in my life and I will treasure it forever. I will never forget the people I have met, the friendships I have made and most importantly, WSO itself. I will always remember this. Always. Samah Tabba

Year 13 26th May 2016 Within the last two years, we have achieved so much as a year group. The IBCP and IBDP courses have challenged us academically through the subjects we have studied as well as the core elements. It has by no means been easy: we have spent several hours attempting to perfect our coursework, spent more time thinking of titles for our essays than writing the essays themselves, left critical thinking lessons with more questions than answers, cried a little, and stayed back after school in an attempt to meet never-ending deadlines.

44

Still, our achievements have not been solely academic. Our cohort is full of talented individuals and this can be seen in our success in sports, the arts, theatre, film and so on. The Sports Academy has done us proud with their achievements in football, rugby, basketball, and netball tournaments - you name it. The West Side Story production was one of our best and wouldn’t have been as spectacular a show without the countless hours of hard work our Theatre students contributed towards it. Let us not forget the stunning art pieces our Visual Arts students have exhibited and the fact that our BTEC Film students won an award from the prestigious Children’s International Film Festival this year. In addition to these outstanding accomplishments, I am proud to be a part of the Class of 2016 because of our contributions to our school and community as a whole. Yes, we did do this for service hours most of the time, but that does not mean that the things we have done have not had a significant impact: We have all volunteered our time generously, whether it was during parent consultation meetings, at marathons and races, coaching, during school events such as maker day or by mentoring younger students in the vertical tutor system. And so today we sit here more resilient, determined and accomplished than we began, prepared to take on the world in our respective ways. Rumana Fazel – Valedictorian Speech
