Hanok City Masterplan UP 631 PHYSICAL PLANNING + URBAN DESIGN CAPSTONE Final publication work; Pedestrian Mall highlight Site location: Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea 100,000 people living in working per square-kilometer; provisions for a rapidly aging population; no greater than 50% residential land use These were the contest rules for the Vertical Cities Asia 2012 International Design Competition. Our studio’s plan uses an arching park system to connect the site with the future Yongsan Park to the site’s east and the Han River to the sout and west. At the site’s center, the park intersects with Yongsan station, one of Seoul’s busiest transit and commercial hubs. Additional transit systems and a highly-calculated provision of services also help make this a sustainable nexus of live/work/play opportunities for all ages. Precedent Study: Songdo IBD UP 631 PHYSICAL PLANNING + URBAN DESIGN CAPSTONE Precedent Study of Songdo International Business District Site location: Songdo, South Korea In preparation for Vertical Cities Asia competition each student in the planning capstone was assigned a recent new town or similar development around the world. The exploration of Songdo was critical to the groundwork of the competition proposal because of its proximity to the site and its designation as one of South Korea’s new international business districts.

Songdo Orientation Map Medium: Esri ArcGIS, Illustrator Cisco Systems is wiring everything from private homes to the traffic lights with new tech and much of the IBD is aiming for LEED certification. This project demonstrates South Korea’s bold vision for its future and encouraged us to think big with our proposal for the Yongsan site.

Lower Town Revitalization UP 518 PHYSICAL PLANNING WORKSHOP Final project Site location: Lower town, Ann Arbor, Michigan Ann Arbor is known for being a bustling college town with a vibrant downtown scene. Lower Town however is one area that continually vexes developers and planners alike and remains a under-utilized part of the city’s urban fabric. As part of a semester-long investigation of the area we split into teams to explore design solutions for smaller parts of Lower Town. Another student and myself focused on part Lower Town Riverfront Blocks and Park of the riverfront that runs through the area. Medium: Sketchup, Photoshop Curently much of the space is occupied by an uninspiring park, storage facility and parking lot for a power company. We sought to reinvigorate the area with a mixed-use residential development and an interactive learning-park. As Lower Town is also known for an abudance of drab student housing, this would seek to attract more families and working professionals to the area, which is in close proximity to the University of Michigan Health System and local Amtrak station.

Chevron Thailand Aviation Base DYNAMIC ENGINEERING CONSULTANTS Front-End Engineering Design Report for Additional Works Site location: Nakorn sri Thammarat, Thailand As part of the Aviation Consolidation Project, Chevron requested the design of additional facilities to better support its operations. The additions included interior work, such as: new officies, a rennovation of the counter check-in facilities, new hangar workshops; and new external facilities such as: a covered walkway, shaded van parking, a new waiting lounge, a new ramp office, and a shaded smoking area. In addition to writing and revising written portions of the report, I worked with DEC engineers and Fenn architects (DEC partners) to draft 3d models in Sketchup from 2d plans. Specifically, I modeled the hangar workshops, waiting lounge, shaded van parking, ramp office, shaded smoking area and edited portions of the facade.

Detroit Neighborhood Prox imity to Shopping Created by Jonathan Moore, 4/ 26/ 11

UP 406 INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS Final Project Site Location: Wayne County, MI This project tasked us with using ArcMap to explore spatial relationships in the Wayne County and Detroit Areas. The fist part of the project investigated the proximity of Detroit neighborhoods to shopping opportunities vs the proximity of all Wayne County communities to shopping opportunities.

Legend Tracts more than 1.5 mi Aw ay f rom Shopping

The second part required each student to explore a topic of their own interest within a given data set. I wanted to see if the recorded building permits suggested a concentration of multi-family housing or cultural/educational opportunities along a proposed light-rail corridor in Detroit. While the limited data and small scale of my project make concrete projections impossible, the result did suggest that the light-rail route would support a variety of families, schools, museums and other institutions.

Waterfront Cottage PERSONAL DESIGN PROJECT future getaway house site location: to be imagined... Growing up along the Maine and Massachusetts coasts and visiting their many lakes I have long desired to one day design and build my own small waterfront home. This desire was further stoked while landscaping during undergrad summers. While this effort is modest and decidedly amateur, I feel I still capture the essential elements I want in a future design: a yin-yang layout combining an intimate bedroom and library opposite an open kitchen and living room, along with a water view and ample deck space. The landscaping also uses thie contrast between intimate and open spaces with a flower garden and sitting area offsetting a flexible lawn area. I used dimensions from Sarah Susanka’s The Not So Big House as a starting point and chose lots of wood and stone materials to give it an old and naturalistic feel.
