About Me My name is Jacqueline Chan, a graduate from UTS with a Bachelor Degree in Product Design. I enjoy industrial design based on my background from conceptual illustrations, I find the ability to produce otherworldly products and bringing them into todays space as a worthwhile profession to have the potential to change the way people interact with the world. I’m looking for a 6 month internship.

Feeder Designing with function
Design Proposal
The idea originated from my own pet dog who had eating disorders from the previous owner, which made me focus my attention on eating habbits.
To design a product that focuses on pets with eating disorders due to unhealthy feeding habits, providing correction methods to create a healthy eating schedule with dry food only. (Wet food product are not recommended to be daily consumed)
Inspiration
Initial Research Existing Products
Medical Advice / Guideline 1. Stick to a schedule 2. Don’t leave food available all daydevalues food, attracts unwanted pests, difficulty in monitoring change in appetite, and more. 3. Control portions - less is more
Features
Problem Space
- WIFI APP control
- Only focus on ‘automatic’ function, target groups tend to be leaning towards people who are busy and out of the house.
- Remote - Auto Feeding - Food Level Sensor - HD Camera
- It hasn’t really been considered with providing correction methods when dogs start to or already have eating disorders.
Getting to know our furry clients Interviews & Surveys
Free Choice Feeding 80 % of the owner’s leave the dog food there and letting them eat whenever they want.
Picky Eater Most of them don’t finish eating dry dog food after being given can food.
Manners Training meal manners before meal. ie. ‘Wait’
Likings Round shapes / Sound of tearing up plastics / Sound of treat bag shaking
Dislikes Sudden noises / Sharp noises
Ideations
Function How it works 1. Calculates the amount of food per meal through the amount given in the storage. (No need for any manual information to be provided from the users) 2. Feeds the desired amount when it's time. (Default 7am 1pm 7pm) 3. Removes any leftover after 10 mins. 4. Calculates if the dog has ate enough with the amount of leftover food. (Weight sensorLoad Cells) 5. Reschedules the feeding plan, the next meal will shift to an earlier time with calculated amount of food.(First meal of the day does not change preventing the time chasing back) 6. Repeats.

Design Brief
Designing within a brand
What makes Dewalt ‘DEWALT’ The design brief for the product engineering course in 2nd year was to design a handheld mixer for the brand Dewalt. First by establishing the target demographic to people who are Dewalt customers and would use a handheld mixer rather frequently( who do use the kitchen), it narrows the aesthetic down to suiting the kitchen more than the iconic Dewalt design, still including the same branding features such as the iconic black and yellow duo which allows the design to expand towards the market who aren’t familiarise with Dewalt. Dewalt has the reputation of having good quality, symbolising powerful and reliable. By borrowing this idea, it portrays that sense of lifestyle into the kitchen, translating into a sleek, elegant and futuristic design proposal.

‘The handle for cups without handles. The tea for cups without tea.’
Design Proposal Inspired by the rich culture of Teaism (Tea Ceremony) from Asia, which is the spirit of using tea as a medium to communicate, trying to bring people together within a subculture. This product is for people who appreciate artistic sculptural pieces to express their interest and taste, creating a topic of conversation for their visitors. For the product itself, I specifically took the elements from nature. In this case, the sky and earth. They compliment each other as a pair, like the yin and the yang, a natural pair of opposites.
A Design Augmentation on enhancing a working product (Mug) , using a more sculptural attempt that connects with nature to make the product allow a longer emotional sustainability, with complex geometry that requires 3D printing technology using scanning and reverse engineering. who is it for, what I have done and why

User Testing The models are made out of monster clay, an ideal material to thoroughly understand ergonomics with the hand. Since it is an oil-based clay, which means it doesn’t dry out, it can be reformed after user testing.
Refine Refining the clay model to its best form in order to scan.
The main process I used in this project was scanning and reverse engineering, the access to 3D scanning technology was what really made this digital handmade project achievable.
3D Printing on the Hp Jet Fusion, allows it to reassemble a plaster sculptural texture, giving the piece a more handmade finish.
It could be customizable for different hand sizes since there is a jurassic difference in hand sizes. The client will need to measure their hands and send the information in to pre- order a customized piece.

consumerism and its impact on changing the behaviour of overconsumption. Which is basically the practicality of this research - based design project.
Constant Consumerism Overconsumption is caused by a combination of factors in today’s global economy, such as consumerism, planned obsolescence, and other unsustainable business practices that juxtaposed against sustainable consumption. Many solutions for overconsumption tend to lean towards providing quick solutions to reduce the consequence, trying to solve the problem through materialistic approaches; whereas, this projects significance lies in the in-depth exploration of the actual cause and effect behind overconsumption.
COPING RESPONSE My angle of observation was on the actual need behind constant consumerism, research shown that it was a coping response, A short-term relief to stress and depression, whilst this act itself is entertaining, distracting, and could defiantly aid procrastination.
ONLINE SHOPPING & SOCIAL MEDIA Leading to the research on the medium that aid this act, the rising of online shopping and the influence of social media , which could be accessed easily with any electronic devices, especially the phone.
VICIOUS CYCLE OF STRESS AND UNDERLYING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES Proven by the interview from the primary research. I tried to find the common ground of products that people interacted with relating to stress, and there was one thing that stood out. They all had a hard time going to sleep, due to social media and distractions on the phone. Whereas the research had explained why: The underlying mental health issues from stress and anxiety
Statement of Design Intent To develop a new product ritual for a night lamp that helps with self-actualisation, from a therapeutic approach with multifunctional features. Encouraging people to disconnect from their phones before bed by designing a sensational product.

Design Features Shape was inspired by the form of a wave, so that ties in with the aesthetic of the underwater pattern. act as a visual barrier, a shelter its like trying to protect the phone from the user
Ergonomics Affordance: There is only one way to put the phone down. Reducing the chances to reach the phone. Having a place for the phone to be there by utilising the Zeigarnik Effect.

Final Concept This project aims to remind people to distance themselves from social media, leaving more time to reflect on themselves, and help people as individuals who will contribute to society by influencing how they approach life. With its sculptural aesthetics, This design takes advantage of people’s nature to be attracted to beauty due to its ability to mend negative emotions and bring light to what the world has to offer, giving hope to what there is to come.

Additional Skills
I’m interested in designing futuristic and otherworldly products because I believe that they are speculative in nature and have the ability to encourage people to reflect on the underlying problems, inspiring alternative ways of being. One of my strong suits is being able to generate quick ideation and sketches. I enjoy the sketching conceptualisation part of the design process probably the most. I draw as a hobby, worked as a freelancer and have been a contracted designer for companies, which allows me to familiarise and gain rich experiences in the field. Utilising new and emerging technologies like 3D scanning also provides the ability to digitalise handmade works, since I work with modelling clay the most in the early stages of prototyping, which allows me to gain a strong connection of the scaling and what the product actually feels like to interact with. I’m also starting to explore digital sculpting tools like ZBrush and Blender to open new territories for modelling.
