HUS ART SPRING EXHIBITION

MARK EVANS Master-carver Mark Evans has captured some of the world’s most famous faces by scraping impressions of them into his large-scale leather hides. Calling the unique technique micro-sculpture his only tools are knives and scalpels. The life-like etchings on tan leather have now made the artist a target of celebrity A-listers, premiership footballers and Saudi royals. The detail and effort that go into each of Evans’ works mean that they have a rarity rarely seen among his contemporaries. Very much in demand, the value of his works is increasing rapidly. HUS recently sold an Evans piece for £95k demonstrating the demand for this fine craftsmanaship.

DAVID BEGBIE

MARK DEMSTEADER Credited with almost singlehandedly sparking the renaissance of interest in traditional life drawing amongst the contemporary art collecting fraternity, Mark Demsteader’s works are of undeniably exceptional quality. It is almost impossible not to fall in love with his sensitive handling of the human form and this has made him one of the most popular figurative artists of today.

David Begbie emerged from the Slade School of Sculpture in 1982 with a unique sculptural technique and the beginnings of a new visual language using steelmesh. Since then he has exhibited worldwide and his extensive list of public commissions includes the Natural History Museum and the Faith Zone of the Millennium Dome. Begbie’s work is based exclusively on the human form with the mesh creating a curious liveliness and sense of movement that makes the sculptures appear as if they have no solid surface at all.

Belgian Damien Gard is a relatively new personality on the London fine art scene but is already tipped as one to watch. Originally trained as a photographer, he now combines his technical skills with painting and mixed media. His works have a distinctive artifactual quality, as if they have captured a moment in time, which appeals to both traditionalists and contemporary collectors alike. For example, a black and white street scene transposed onto a section of a dilapidated door, complete with brackets and hinges, evokes thoughts of past memories and visited places. Still relatively inexpensive, a Gard is a definite investment piece.
