Alpine Strawberry ‘Mara Des Bois’

Alpine Strawberry 'Mara Des Bois' )New PP#8,517. (Fragaria hybrid.) The intense fragrance and rich succulent flavor of an alpine strawberry combined with the heavy production of a garden strawberry! 'Mara des Bois' is a gourmet treat. This day-neutral everbearer sends out runners in the garden, establishing daughter plants to replenish itself. It bears in cycles from late spring all through summer, setting masses of bright red fruit about the size of an unshelled hazelnut. The flavor combines the musky bite of wild strawberries with a tart yet sweet component — absolutely delectable! Introduced in France in 1991 as a hybrid of 4 varieties selected for their complexity of flavor and texture, it is ideal for strawberry jars and hanging baskets as well as the garden. Gooseberry 'Jahns Prairie' )New (Ribes oxyacanthoides.) Highly disease-resistant and productive, this selection of a species native to the prairies bears dessert-quality fruit in great numbers. Developed jointly by American and Canadian agricultural organizations, it is an upright, somewhat sprawling shrub with small pinkish-white spring blooms followed by masses of green to reddish-pink berries in midsummer. Mespilus germanica 'Royal' — Medlar

)New Gooseberry 'Jahns Prairie'

Mespilus ‘Royal’

Strangely impossible to find in this country, this beautiful tree is tailor-made for the American garden. Structure is picturesque—low and wide-spreading, with lovely crooked brances, rarely exceeding 20 feet in as many years. Masses of heavenly white to light pink flowers in early summer are followed by unusual 1½ inch fruits that are a favorite in Europe for jelly. Fruits can be eaten out-of-hand when soft; flavor is somewhat like applesauce. Bareroot. Z 5-8 | early summer | sun | H: 8-10', W: 8-10'

Pomegranate Favorite™ )New (Punica granatum.) The hardiest Pomegranate we have ever grown is also one of the most delicious, with small, exceedingly sweet pale red fruit beginning just a season or two after planting. But its primary value may be ornamental, for its bright orange-scarlet blooms are abundant and lovely, continuing for several months on this compact, well- branched shrub. Untroubled by pests and diseases, this selffertile shrub has survived temperatures below 10 degrees F without damage, and is worthy of a place of honor in the garden. 1-gallon container.
