trax brief Identify an opportunity for an Internet of Things product fOR which the industrial design and app interface are dedicated to its purpose.

THE PROPOSAL CHOOSE YOUR SPORT

trax was created through an in depth design development process during which various concepts were designed, modeled and developed . trax contains a range of sensors which can keep track key of statistics related to the sport currently in progress. trax is designed for extreme sports enthusiasts aged between 16-25. trax is designed to be durable yet comfortable, and achieves this through the use of a rubberised polymer strap and full adjustment using anthropometrics.

ideation & DEVELOPMENT initial idea development stages, using extreme sports as the purpose the brand trax was created along with various other concept proposals. This was an opportunity to develop the concepts into a viable product, with manufacture and feasibility considered.

luna design week

brief

7 day project from brief to concept proposal.

design a sustainable domestic product which works in partnership with solar Pv technology.

The proposal

SUSTAINABLE dEHUMIDIFIER WHICH UTALISES THE WATER IT COLLECTS BY POWERING A LIGHT USING ELECTROLYSIS. Luna uses an intellegent system to work in sync with solar panels in order to control the amount of energy they consume relative to solar pv output. a set of high power led’s run on salt water and can last for 8 hours before the salt water is automatically replaced.

dehumidifier electronics water salt water & electrode waste water

description

Sustainability

Luna is a sustainable de-humidifier which makes use of the water it collects by creating a salt water mix, which generates enough electricity to power a series of LED’s when connected in circuit with an electrode.

Luna can control the amount of power it consumes in relation to humidity levels and how much electricity is being generated by solar PV installations.

User

The light can illuminate large rooms through the use of high power LED’s which use no electricity, meaning it can be used as an alternative to conventional lighting in order to reduce the household electricity consumption, thus allowing the home to become more solar reliant.

This is a high end product targetted at middle aged homeowners who are interested in reducing their power consumption due to envornmental conciousness or economical motivation. This consumer has an interest in sustainable products whilst also having a keen eye for aethetics and form.

Technology Electrolysis is used in order to process the salt water into electricity. Salt is made up of charged ions which when dissolved in water are free to attract to the opposingly charged electrode. This creates an electric current capable of powering LED’s. By Using energy efficient radiators and heaters with better insulation, power usage can be reduced.

Manufacturing This product consists of a durable ABS outer shell formed through injection moulding. The waste water unit is formed glass which gives a high quality feel to the product while the user is interacting with it.

limitations The need to replace salt and anodes is an added maintinence process. The waste water also has to be emptired, however this is already a fundamental requirement for dehumidifiers..

storyboard

The water can be emptied by twisting the body of the product allowing it to free from the glass waste water container, This can then be poured down the sink.

Power up by pressing the round button on the face. Luna displays power settings and individual room humidity which allows the user to move the device to the correct location to achieve maximum efficiency.

The light can be adjusted in order to provide direct spot lighting when in the open position, and ambient lighting when closed.

SALT

ANODES

Up to 5 Anodes are stored in the body of the product and are automatically inserted when the existing anode has degraded. These should last for up to 3 years when used 8 hours a day. Luna will control the amount of electricity it consumes relative to the ammount of energy being produced by the solar installation, AND CAN controls its power relative to humiditiy levels .

Salt Capsules are also stored here, and are automatically inserted when the salinity level drops. Salt must be replaced on amonthly basis when used 8 hours a day.

tyre lever brief design a promotional item and a mould tool capable of producing it using injection moulding.

THE PROPOSAL

The proposal is a promitional tyre lever which is based on the branding of wethepeople and, can be given away at events such as competitions. The mould tool is a fully manufacturable and contains 16 inserts which create a complex geometry with features such as ribs and clipping parts. each product weighs roughly 7 grams which has been minimised in order to save on polymer and injection moulding cycle times.

MOULD TOOL DEVELOPMENT sketch development of the mould tool and inserts which are used to generate the desired form. the final proposal features 16 inserts which are used to create a uniform 2mm wall thickness with clipping parts and undercuts. The inserts have been designed in order to be produced using 2.5d cnc machining and other techniques available in the workshops at the design school.

mass production the chosen polymer is abs, which has been selected due to its strength properties which is a fundamental requirement for the products functionality as a tyre lever.

MOULD CLOSES: 1.1 secs

fill time: 1.3 secs

FREEZE TIME: 4.1 secs

PARTS EJECTED: 1.2 secs MOULD OPENS: 0.3 secs

TOTAL CYCLE TIME IS 8 SECONDS, WHICH WOULD ENABLE AROUND 4,000 PARTS TO BE PRODUCED PER DAY, and would use ÂŁ103 and 56Kg of abs per day.

putter brief DESIGN AN INCLUSIVE SPORTS GAME OR EQUIPMENT TO AID CHILDREN WITH PHYSICAL OR COGNITIVE DISSABILITIES.

The proposal

PUTTER WAS DESIGNED IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE INCLUSIVE DESIGN AND THE VARIOUS RESEARCH METHODS IT ENCOMPASES, such as interview techniques and observational research. putter is an inclusive golf game designed for children with physical disabilities between the ages of 4-18 years. during the research process it became clear that wheelchair users were interested in golf, but did not have the ability to play it. putter is designed to take away some of the physical aspects of golf, resulting in a challenging, yet achievable game.

observation

1

In preparation, a site visit was conducted which was an overview of Ash Field School, this visit was an opportunity to see all areas of the school and the range of equipment currently in use.

co-design

3

The Co-Design process lasted roughly 30 minutes per participant and consisted of 3 initial design concepts which were developed during this activity. The concepts were presented to both partici-pants which provided some vital feedback which could be used for development.

interviews using a questionairre semi-structured interview technique, various pupils were interviewed which enabled initial idea development.

2

final concepts

4

The design presentation included 3 finalised CONCEPTS which were developed through co-design. The design presentation was a chance to get honest feedback as to whether the design proposals had met the needs and aspirations expressed by the participants throughout proJECT.
