‘What an Incredible Mark He’s Left for Us’ A tribute to King T’Challa By Ryan Coogler

Before sharing my thoughts on the passing of the great Chadwick Boseman, I first offer my condolences to his family who meant so very much to him. To his wife, Simone, especially. I inherited Marvel and the Russo Brothers' casting choice of T'Challa. It is something that I will forever be grateful for. The first time I saw Chad’s performance as T’Challa, it was in an unfinished cut of Captain America: Civil War. I was deciding whether or not directing Black Panther was the right choice for me. I’ll never forget, sitting in an editorial suite on the Disney Lot and watching his scenes. His first with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, then, with the South African cinema titan, John Kani as T'Challa’s father, King T'Chaka. It was at that moment I knew I wanted to make this movie. After Scarlett’s character leaves them, Chad and John began conversing in a language I had never heard before. It sounded familiar, full of the same clicks and smacks that young black children would make in the States. The same clicks that we would often be chided for being disrespectful or improper. But, it had a musicality to it that felt ancient, powerful, and African. In my meeting after watching the film, I asked Nate Moore, one of the producers of the film, about the language. “Did you guys make it up?” Nate replied, “That’s Xhosa, John Kani’s native language. He and Chad decided to do the scene like that on set, and we rolled with it.” I thought to myself, “He just learned lines in another language, that day?” I couldn’t

“Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler (l) with the late Chadwick Boseman. conceive how difficult that must have been, and even though I hadn’t met Chad, I was already in awe of his capacity as actor. I learned later that there was much conversation over how T’Challa would sound in the film. The decision to have Xhosa be the official language of Wakanda was solidified by Chad, a native of South Carolina, because he was able to learn his lines in Xhosa, there on the spot. He also advocated for his character to speak with an African accent, so that he could present T’Challa to audiences as an African king, whose dialect had not been conquered by the West. I finally met Chad in person in early

2016, once I signed onto the film. He snuck past journalists that were congregated for a press junket I was doing for “Creed,” and met with me in the green room. We talked about our lives, my time playing football in college, and his time at Howard studying to be a director, about our collective vision for T’Challa and Wakanda. We spoke about the irony of how his former Howard classmate TaNehisi Coates was writing T’Challa’s current arc with Marvel Comics. And how Chad knew Howard student Prince Jones, who’s murder by a police officer inspired Coates’ memoir “Between The World and Me”. I noticed then that Chad was an

anomaly. He was calm. Assured. Constantly studying. But also kind, comforting, had the warmest laugh in the world, and eyes that seen much beyond his years, but could still sparkle like a child seeing something for the first time. That was the first of many conversations. He was a special person. We would often speak about heritage and what it means to be African. When preparing for the film, he would ponder every decision, every choice, not just for how it would reflect on himself, but how those choices could reverberate. “They not ready for this, what we are doing…”

Democrats in Va. vow lawsuit to try to block Kanye West from Virginia’s presidential ballot Rapper Kanye West has qualified to appear on Virginia’s presidential ballot in November, according to state election officials, but Democrats are trying to block him because some Virginia voters his paperwork identifies as supporters say they didn’t know what they were signing up for. The Virginia Department of Elections confirmed Friday evening that West was approved to be on the ballot as an independent. The agency verified West submitted more than 5,000 valid petition signatures from Virginia voters and met the requirement to file at least 200 signatures from each of the state’s 11 congressional districts. But the 13 names he submitted as Virginia electors – the people who would cast their votes for West in the Electoral College in the highly unlikely event he wins Virginia – are in dispute because some of those people say they weren’t told they were helping West. Last week, New York Magazine reported that seven of the 13 Virginians identified as West electors were “either unaware that they signed up to cast electoral votes on his behalf, or that they had signed notarized paperwork connected to the rapper’s presidential bid at all.” A spokesman for the Democratic Party of Virginia circulated a news release Saturday from “a group of concerned Virginia voters and citizens” promising litigation to try to block West from appearing on the ballot. “Legitimate candidates for President and Vice President would have no difficulty locating 13 Virginians willing to serve as their electors,” the group said in its release. “Instead, Mr. West or those working on his behalf resorted to deception to falsely represent that he had obtained the support of the

requisite number of electors. This undercuts the democratic process to be tricked into doing something you would not do freely.” One of West’s identified electors, Matthan Wilson of Suffolk, is listed as a prospective plaintiff in the litigation. Wilson, a 53-year-old government teacher who works in Newport News, said in an interview that he was riding his bike on Aug. 11 when he was approached by three people who asked him if he wanted to be a Virginia elector. He said they did not mention they were working for West. “No offense to Mr. West, but if they had mentioned him I would not have signed,” Wilson said. “I wouldn’t have stayed there. I would’ve left.” The electors, including Wilson, signed notarized oaths promising to vote for West and his vice presidential running mate Michelle Tidball. The oath itself does not include West’s name, but the accompanying petitions do. Wilson said he only learned he had been identified as a Westsupporting elector when another

reporter called him. Upon finding out what had happened, he said, he felt embarrassed and angry. “How are you going to have a situation where you allow this to happen?,” Wilson said. “This isn’t democracy. I can’t be tricked into giving you a vote or a vote of

confidence. It should be my free will. And it felt like my free will was taken away.” The group threatening a lawsuit did not specify when litigation would be filed or what lawyers would be working on its behalf. Some have speculated that West is trying to draw African-American votes away from Democratic nominee Joe Biden, a claim he did not deny in an interview with Forbes in which he said that, rather than running for president, he was “walking… to win.” The Democratic efforts to keep West off Virginia’s ballot suggests they have at least some concern the celebrity candidate could hurt Biden’s chances in the state, even though Democrats have won every statewide race for the last decade. In 2016, Democrat Hillary Clinton beat President Donald Trump in Virginia by about 212,000 votes. A legal challenge could center on whether a court finds West’s

associates actively misled people or decides it was the signers’ responsibility to read and understand what they were signing. State law Jo Jorgensen requires those who agree to be electors to cast their Electoral College votes for the candidate named in the paperwork they signed. Those votes occur at a little-noticed ceremony at the state Capitol after each presidential election. The dispute will have to be resolved quickly. Election officials have to start printing ballots soon to have them ready in time for the start of absentee voting on Sept. 18. The State Board of Elections, the body that oversees the elections department, is not required to sign off on the final ballot form. The board is not scheduled to meet until Sept. 15, well after the ballots must be prepped and ready to go out to the hundreds of thousands of Virginians who have already asked to vote absentee. It wasn’t immediately apparent what impact West’s presence on the ballot might have in Virginia or whether he has any intention of campaigning in the state. An email and phone call to the address and number listed on West’s paperwork were not returned. Numerous media reports have indicated Republican operatives helped West try to get on the ballot in other states, though it wasn’t immediately clear if that was the case in Virginia. West’s paperwork identifies numerous people who circulated petitions in Virginia on his behalf, many of whom listed out-of-state addresses. On Saturday, a reporter for

New York Magazine noted that an address tied to West in a lawsuit he filed to gain access to the ballot in Wisconsin matches the address of Virginia-based GOP elections law firm Holtzman Vogel Josefiak Torchinsky. State Sen. Jill Vogel,

R-Fauquier, is the firm’s managing partner. West has already been disqualified from the ballot in several other states for inadequate paperwork. His website lists a range of Bible verses and policy positions, starting

with “creating a culture of life.” Libertarian presidential candidate Jo Jorgensen also qualified to appear on Virginia’s ballot. For now, West’s name is on the official candidate list posted on Virginia’s election website.- VM

The LEGACY

A note to the police SEAN CARTER

The fact that “the suspect failed to obey our lawful commands” is not a valid reason to kill them. For one, the death penalty is reserved for serious crimes like murder and not just because someone didn’t “respect my authoritay!” And even when death is warranted, we actually go through the process of a trial, penalty phase and numerous appeals. We don’t just allow one creatine-guzzling idiot (that would be you) to make that determination. Second, and this one is important ... In fact, you might even want to stop slapping your wife for a minute to read it. Ready? The suspect is not supposed to follow your commands. If people always followed the rules, you wouldn’t have a f-----g job (and all the cash and weed you can steal from black people). And I’m being serious. The entire purpose for your existence is that some people don’t follow the rules. So, you don’t have an excuse to kill the

very people whom you have been employed to deal with. It would be like a doctor saying, “I’m tired of all these damn sick people. The next person to come in here with diabetes is getting a syringe full of bleach, because these fat fuckers don’t follow my advice to stay away from sweets!” That would be stupid, right? And even if you don't see it now, just

nod your head up and down. And why would it be stupid? (Keep nodding) Because a doctor’s entire purpose is to heal the sick. And speaking of which, you do know that sick people can be quite uncooperative themselves, don’t you? So guess how many "noncompliant” patients were choked to death last year by doctors and nurses in hospitals? Here’s a hint for you: It’s a round number. And it rhymes with f-----g zero! So, let’s review for the slow members of the club (i.e., all of you). Doctors don’t hurt and kill people for being sick because they’ve been trained to deal with the sick. In fact, without sick people, there would be no need for doctors. Make sense? So why are you jugheads killing people for being “non-compliant” when you’ve been trained to deal with the non-compliant? In fact, you’ve only been trained to deal with the non-compliant. Because it doesn’t take six weeks of police academy training to pull me over for DWB and then make up some

lie to justify the intrusion (e.g., “You failed to signal that you were going straight,” “You fit the description of someone who looks nothing like you,” etc.). And, with a lawful command follower like me, I’m going to show you my license and registration immediately (and hopefully without making any “sudden moves”) and only curse out your punk ass after I am safely in my home. Instead, you were given that training to deal with the occasional person who (justifiably) is sick of your bull----t. So the fact that “suspect failed to obey a lawful command” is NOT a reason for you to act as judge, jury and executioner. It’s why you were hired in the first place: to deal with those who don’t obey lawful commands (and to keep them alive for trial). Because without these very people, we would need you even less than we already do. Carter is an Arizona-based Harvard educated lawyer and social commentator.

Call it “socialism”

When Social Security was enacted under a Democratic president in 1935, many Republicans vehemently opposed it as “socialism”. In that same legislation, state unemployment compensation programs were mandated; again, Republican opponents called that socialism. A few years before Medicare was enacted in 1965 under a Democratic administration, then-actor Ronald Reagan made a recording in which he warned the nation of the horrors of socialism that would befall us under Medicare. Listen to that scary recording on YouTube; it seems laughable today. Social Security has become the most popular social program in U.S. history. Unemployment compensation has been a lifesaver for many working families. And millions of Americans who don’t have adequate health care wish they could be on Medicare. Republicans have been quick to label many other programs designed to help working families as “socialism”. But they didn’t seem nearly as troubled by massive bailouts of big banks and other large corporations, where they effectively socialized the losses, but usually not the profits. Now Donald Trump and Republicans try to scare us. Supposedly, electing even moderate Democrats like Joe Biden would turn us into a failed socialist country like Venezuela. So, it’s worth considering how much better Americans’ lives have been as a result of programs that many Republicans have opposed as “socialism”. David J. Roberts Chicago, IL

(from page 1) “This is Star Wars, this is Lord of the Rings, but for us… and bigger!” He would say this to me while we were struggling to finish a dramatic scene, stretching into double overtime. Or while he was covered in body paint, doing his own stunts. Or crashing into frigid water, and foam landing pads. I would nod and smile, but I didn’t believe him. I had no idea if the film would work. I wasn’t sure I knew what I was doing. But I look back and realize that Chad knew something we all didn’t. He was playing the long game. All while putting in the work. And work he did. He would come to auditions for supporting roles, which is not common for lead actors in big budget movies. He was there for several M’Baku auditions. In Winston Duke’s, he turned a chemistry read into a wrestling match. Winston broke his bracelet. In Letitia Wright’s audition for Shuri, she pierced his royal poise with her signature humour, and would bring about a smile to T’Challa’s face that was 100 percent Chad. While filming the movie, we would meet at the office or at my rental home in Atlanta, to discuss lines and different ways to add depth to each scene. We talked costumes, military practices. He said to me “Wakandans have to dance during the coronations. If they just stand there with spears, what separates them from Romans?” In early drafts of the script. Eric Killmonger’s character would ask T’Challa to be buried in Wakanda. Chad challenged that and

asked, “What if Killmonger asked to be buried somewhere else?” Chad deeply valued his privacy, and I wasn’t privy to the details of his illness. After his family released their statement, I realised that he was living with his illness the entire time I knew him. Because he was a caretaker, a leader, and a man of faith, dignity and pride, he shielded his collaborators from his suffering. He lived a beautiful life. And he made great art. Day after day, year after year. That was who he was. He was an epic firework display. I will tell stories about being there for some of the brilliant sparks ‘till the end of my days. What an incredible mark he’s left for us. I haven’t grieved a loss this acute before. I spent the last year preparing, imagining and writing words for him to say, that we weren’t destined to see. It leaves me broken knowing that I won’t be able to watch another close-up of him in the monitor again or walk up to him and ask for another take. It hurts more to know that we can’t have another conversation, or Facetime, or text message exchange. He would send vegetarian recipes and eating regimens for my family and me to follow during the pandemic. He would check in on me and my loved ones, even as he dealt with the scourge of cancer. In African cultures, we often refer to loved ones that have passed on as ancestors. Sometimes you are genetically related. Sometimes you are not. I had the privilege of directing scenes of Chad’s character, T’Challa,

communicating with the ancestors of Wakanda. We were in Atlanta, in an abandoned warehouse, with bluescreens, and massive movie lights, but Chad’s performance made it feel real. I think it was because from the time that I met him, the ancestors spoke through him. It’s no secret to me now how he was able to skilfully portray some of our most notable ones. I had no doubt that he would live on and continue to bless us with more. But it is with a heavy heart and a sense of deep gratitude to have ever been in his presence, that I have to reckon with the fact that Chad is an ancestor now. And I know that he will watch over us, until we meet again. Chadwick Boseman died at the age of 43 on Friday, Aug. 28, following a private battle with colon cancer. “It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman,” a statement shared to his official social media accounts read. The statement revealed Boseman was diagnosed with stage III cancer in 2016 and that he battled with it for the past four years as it progressed to stage IV. “A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” the statement continued. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.” Boseman is survived by his wife, Taylor Simone Ledward and a parent.

State lab begins antibody testing for COVID-19 Virginia’s state public health lab in Richmond began antibody testing for COVID-19, according to a recent news release from the Department of General Services, the agency that oversees it. The Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services has offered polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, testing since Feb. 29, when it first validated the COVID-19 test distributed to states by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. PCR is a molecular test that can diagnose active cases of the virus by amplifying its genetic sequence in patient samples — usually taken from the nose or throat. Antibody testing uses blood samples to search for proteins that develop in response to an infection. The tests can’t diagnose active cases of the disease, but can determine if a patient has been infected with it in the past. For the first six months of the pandemic, DCLS has relied solely on PCR testing to diagnose COVID-19 on a limited basis. The state’s testing protocol was originally limited only to patients with close contact to a labconfirmed case or symptomatic individuals who tested negative for other respiratory diseases. That criteria has loosened as testing has become more widely available, but testing through the state lab is still limited to patients vetted by the Virginia Department of Health. Much of the lab’s capacity has been used for widespread screening at congregate care facilities such as nursing homes and prisons. The lab’s newly-established antibody testing will serve a different purpose, according to the release. DCLS will use the tests to assess the spread of COVID-19 across Virginia and how many residents have been exposed to the disease. “PCR tells who is infected now but doesn’t show everyone who has been infected,” DCLS Deputy

Director Marilyn Freeman said in a statement. “The antibody test fills that gap. It can’t be used for diagnosis but it can be used for surveillance to see how many people have been exposed.” Antibody testing has been commercially available since at least May, but DCLS initially kept

its focus on PCR testing to support other diagnostic labs and “mak[e] sure public health officials had the information they needed about active infections,” DGS spokeswoman, Dena Potter, wrote in an email. “Now molecular tests are more widely available across Virginia, so we are adding the antibody testing

to help with that broader picture of current and past infection to help public health officials better understand how the virus is circulating in the state.” The state lab is using the Siemens Atellica IM COV2G — one of the first serology tests that display an estimate of the antibody levels. -VM
