Preaching unity at the scene of an insurrection FROM WIRE REPORTS WASHINGTON — Joe Biden, who ran on a message of unity and healing, is being sworn in as the country’s 46th president Jan. 20 at the literal scene of a crime. One hand on the Bible, the other in the air, Biden will stand in front of the U.S. Capitol just two weeks after angry supporters of President Donald Trump, including white supremacists, breached and then ransacked the building, leading to five deaths. The tanks, razor-wirecovered fences, and thousands of National Guard troops surrounding the stage will only further emphasize the precariousness of the peaceful transfer of power this year in a dystopian scene that clashes loudly with the inauguration’s official theme: “America United.” It’s a theme that also clashes with the mood of many Democrats after watching Trump, aided by many members of his party, attempt to steal an election and disenfranchise millions of voters. “Why do we think we can have unity and no justice?” asked LaTosha Brown, cofounder of the Black Voters Matter grass-roots organization that helped mobilize Black voters in Georgia and other swing states. “What’s very frustrating to me is usually ‘unity’ is reduced to meaning white comfort.” At a time when the political system has been rocked to its core, it’s fitting, in a sense, that Biden’s unwavering message of uniting, returning to “normalcy,” and righting the ship of U.S. democracy will take center stage this week. The outbreak of political violence underscores Biden’s campaign message that Trump, in encouraging extremism and racism, is a danger to the country. But this moment also presents a formidable challenge to Biden’s hopeful vision of a postTrump America, a place where Republicans would experience an “epiphany” about bipartisanship and join with magnanimous Democrats in a narrowly divided Congress to

The Capitol is seen behind a razor wire fence. prove his mantra that “there’s nothing we can’t do if we do it together.” Democratic lawmakers, many of whom feared for their lives as the mob overran the Capitol, are arguing that justice must come before healing. The House impeached Trump for the second time on Wednesday, and a Senate trial to convict him could begin shortly after Biden is sworn in. If Trump is convicted, senators could move to bar him from holding future office or take a separate vote to strip him from receiving postpresidential perks. There’s also a movement to expel any lawmakers who were found to have encouraged the riot. “We need accountability in order to achieve unity,” said Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts. “We can’t turn a blind eye.” The thirst for justice mirrors the attitude of voters overall. A slim majority of voters in a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll said they believe Trump should be barred from holding future office; while nearly 90 percent of

Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said the same. A similar share of Democrats believe Trump should be charged with a crime for inciting the attack. Biden has named those who attacked the Capitol “thugs” and called for their prosecution, as well as for a thorough investigation into the events of Jan. 6. But he’s stayed far away from the question of consequences for Trump himself, or for Republican lawmakers. “I’m not going to tell the Justice Department who they should prosecute and who they should not,” Biden told reporters on Jan. 8. He also said he didn’t believe Senators Ted Cruz or Josh Hawley should be expelled from the Senate for pumping up the false claims of fraud and leading the congressional movement to contest the election results. Biden’s chief of staff, Ron Klain, declined to say if Trump should be barred from holding office again in an interview with The Washington Post on Friday. “The president is going to be on trial before the Senate — that’s going to be their business to sort out,” Klain said. “Our focus is on trying to get things done for the country.” The reticence reflects both Biden’s reluctance to give a partisan sheen to any future consequences for the raid, as well as his desire to quickly move on from the Trump years when he takes office. Biden and his team have emphasized that they don’t want a Senate trial to overshadow his agenda, which is topped by battling the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. He introduced a $1.9 trillion relief package last week and outlined his vaccine distribution plan. Markey said he believes the trial can be brief so that senators can also focus on approving Biden’s legislative priorities and nominations. “We don’t need a long-winded investigation or multiple-weeks-long trial to determine that Donald Trump committed high crimes and

Ayala, Guzman champion equality, representation in lieutenant governor bids CNS - Recently, two different Latina members of the General Assembly, Hala Ayala and Elizabeth Guzmán, have announced their candidacies for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia; if either is elected, they would be the first Latina woman to hold the office. Hala Ayala and Elizabeth Guzmán, two delegates who represent Prince William County, have formally announced a run for lieutenant governor. If either is successful, Ayala or Guzmán would become the first Latina to serve in the role. The delegates were among the first Latina representatives elected to the state legislature during the wave of Democratic victories in 2017. Ayala and Guzmán ran for office to provide diversity in state government in order to more accurately represent the population in Prince William County, where a quarter of residents are Latino; almost 25 percent are Black and nearly 10 percent are Asian, according to the U.S. Census. ‘A bridge builder’ Ayala was born in Alexandria to a Salvadoran father and Irish-Lebanese mother. Before becoming a state delegate, she volunteered for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and founded the Prince William chapter of the National Organization for Women. She also was vice president of the organization at the state level. Ayala defeated eightyear incumbent Republican Rich Anderson to represent District 51 in Virginia’s House of Delegates. Ayala said she first considered running for lieutenant governor in 2019 to be a bridge builder. She said she has seen the societal divide in America grow this year because of COVID-19, and knew she could do more. Before becoming involved in

politics, Ayala worked in national security, where she said settling disagreements and being a bridge builder is part of the job. A self-described politician and activist, Ayala said she has always championed for equality. “My work with Prince William NOW was about bringing people together, which I’ve always tried to do,” Ayala said. “You may not like what I say, but at least you know you are seen, you are heard and you are welcomed.” Ayala is also an advocate for improving Medicaid, which she credits with saving her son, who has autism. “We need a healthcare system that is inclusive of our economy and works for every family, especially now, as Virginia deals with the pandemic,” she said. In the upcoming General Assembly session, Ayala said she plans to introduce legislation providing hazard pay for essential workers, defining broadband as critical infrastructure, and improving schools.

‘A matter of representation’

Guzmán immigrated to the United States from Peru and settled in Northern Virginia. She worked three jobs to afford a one-bedroom apartment before earning a master’s degree in public administration and social work and becoming a social worker. Guzmán defeated eight-term Republican incumbent Del. Scott Lingamfelter in 2017 for the 31st District seat. She ran on a platform of improving public education, raising the minimum wage, and expanding Medicaid. Guzmán said her decision to run for state legislature was a matter of representation, and that Lingamfelter was not a good representation of the diverse

Del. Ayala during her first session after clinching a victory in 2017. constituents in Eastern Prince William. Guzman said that because of her background she was able to champion historic legislation this year. “It was because of the communities that I represent,” Guzmán said. “It was about the struggles that I had as a first generation immigrant.” Guzmán was tapped to co-chair Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign in Virginia with fellow Prince William Del. Lee Carter. Guzmán said she’s passionate about investing more into the state’s public education, including more counselors in schools and more resources for special education and remote learning. Guzmán said she was surprised to discover education issues and legislation that would improve “quality of life” were seen as partisan in the chamber. “It didn’t matter how well I could make my case or how prepared I would be with data and facts, it was all about party,” Guzmán said. “My intention was to serve all Virginians, not only those who voted for me.” As a member of the Prince

William-Manassas Regional Jail Board, Guzmán had a hand in getting Prince William County to end its agreement to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to pursue and detain immigrants who entered the country without legal permission. Guzmán said that Prince William was no safer statistically while they had the program than nearby localities without it, and ICE made the county’s immigrant community feel less safe and more hesitant to report a crime they were the victim of, such as a robbery or domestic violence, for fear of being deported. “The vision for Virginia should be a place where diversity is embraced and not disrespected,” Guzmán said. “It should be a place where people feel safe, and feeling safe means that you should be comfortable calling the police when there is a crime, regardless of your immigration status.” Guzmán said she has heard from constituents that health care and access to higher education are

Many area residents receive link for COVID vaccine event by mistake; registrations cancelled Several thousand registrations for an upcoming COVID-19 vaccination event at Richmond Raceway have been cancelled after individuals not eligible for the event received an online signup link in error and used it to register. The signup link was intended for use only by public school and public safety employees from Goochland, Hanover and Henrico counties and the city of Richmond — employees who are in the top three front-facing worker groups designated by the Virginia Department of Health for vaccination in Phase 1B. Although the Virginia Department of Health is sponsoring numerous public vaccination clinics, this event was not intended for the general public. More than 55 percent of the registrations — about 6,000 — came from individuals who were not part of these priority groups but had received the signup link in error. The number of inadvertent registrations exceeded the amount of available vaccine and would

have excluded many public school and public safety employees from receiving their priority vaccinations, said Tony McDowell, (pictured) Henrico’s deputy county manager for public safety. “Unfortunately, many residents in central Virginia who are not part of these priority vaccination groups received the registration link by mistake,” McDowell said. “We regret this error and any inconvenience or confusion it has caused for our residents. “We are working to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine to our

community as safely and quickly as possible, in accordance with the Phase 1B priority-group protocols established by the Virginia Department of Health and the CDC,” he said. “We are grateful for everyone’s patience as we continue to work to protect the health and well-being of our community.” Public school and public safety agencies from Goochland, Hanover, Henrico and Richmond will confirm and be in contact with their employees who registered through the signup link. Chesterfield public school and public safety employees should continue with existing plans to vaccinate through specific Chesterfield events. Other individuals in Phase 1B, such as older residents and those with certain pre-existing health conditions, are also a high priority,

McDowell said. Information on registration for additional vaccination events for other individuals included in Phase 1B will be provided by local health departments; see below for contacts. Va. leaders respond to bridge closures for Biden inauguration Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, U.S. senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and U.S. representatives Don Beyer, Gerry Connolly, and Jennifer Wexton (all D-VA) today issued the following statement on the agreement between the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States Secret Service (USSS) authorizing the use of Virginia State Police assets, resources, and personnel, to assist with the closure of bridges spanning the Potomac River during the 2021 Presidential Inauguration Ceremony: “The 2021 Presidential Inauguration Ceremony will see the strongest Capital-area security response in history. We worked together to push for a response that balances protecting public safety in a manner commensurate with

available intelligence about threats without going too far. It is very important now that the U.S. Secret Service and its partner agencies communicate road and bridge closures swiftly and clearly in order to keep disruptions to a minimum. All of us want the transfer of power to be as peaceful as possible, and we thank all of the men and women in uniform helping to make this historic occasion safe.” As a result of the Virginia-USSS agreement, Virginia State Police will facilitate the closure of bridges and pedestrian thoroughfares including Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, Arlington Memorial Bridge, Interstate 395 Bridge, and 14th St. Bridge, beginning at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, and ending at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 6 a.m.

Even before Trump’s supporters sacked the Capitol, Biden’s promise to unite the country and work with Republicans seemed like a daunting undertaking, and garnered plenty of skepticism from progressive Democrats who believed he was naïve about the GOP’s intent to obstruct him. Since then, a global pandemic, economic woes, and Trump and many Republicans lying to their base about the election being “stolen” from them has created more division and anger than ever. legally cast votes in the hours after the mob attack, displaying a harrowing problem for Biden and the country: a party that continues to embrace an antidemocratic lie that delegitimizes his administration. Meanwhile, many congressional Democrats are furious at their GOP colleagues for stoking the lies, their anger intensified by a recent COVID-19 outbreak they trace to sharing a hiding space during the insurrection with some Republicans who refused to wear masks. “There will be no reset button. No return to normal,” Representative Ayanna Pressley of Boston tweeted on Thursday, in what appears to be a veiled warning to Biden not to embrace a nostalgic message that ignores the systemic injustices plaguing the nation. “The status The LEGACY welcomes all signed letters and all respectful opinions. quo was unjust in the first place.” Biden’s team knows that not everyone is buying into the inauguration’s unity message. “This whole ‘America United’ theme ... I know there are folks who are skeptical of that theme,” Maju Varghese, executive director of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, said at a Georgetown Institute of Politics event on Thursday. “I don’t blame them.” But Varghese added that coming together is the only way for the country to function. “I don’t know another way,” he said. Biden himself referenced the skepticism in a speech on Friday about his vaccine plan. “Unity is not some pie-in-the-sky dream,” he said. “It is a practical step to getting things done.” While the contents of Biden’s inaugural address are a closely guarded secret, Varghese said he would expect Biden to channel hope and optimism in his remarks, as well as being blunt about the challenges the country faces. One Biden ally said the president-elect realizes that unity is impossible without Americans operating from the same set of facts. But that, too, seems optimistic given how many rioters parroted the dark and fantastical claims of the “Q” conspiracy theory, which the FBI has labeled a terrorist threat. “I think Joe Biden understands

that we have to be united in truth,” said Representative Stephen Lynch of South Boston. “We can’t proceed in a way that is united and strong if we’re chasing a fiction, if we’re entertaining some alternative reality.” Chuck Hagel, the former GOP senator from Nebraska who served as defense secretary in the Obama administration, said he believes Biden may, counter-intuitively, actually be helped by the violent events of January. Many Americans, including Republicans, were repulsed by what they saw, and even Senator Mitch McConnell, who will be the GOP minority leader in the Senate, has broken with Trump over the attack, leaving open the possibility of convicting Trump in an impeachment trial. That bodes well for the possibility of Republicans helping Biden pass pieces of his agenda in the future, Hagel said. “In a way, President-elect Biden is going to have some wind at his back,” said Hagel. “With all the problems he’s got to deal with — COVID, the economy, and a divided country. I think most people in this country are sick and tired of what they’ve seen in our country over the past few years.” Reaching across the aisle and unifying is a message Biden has been preaching for decades. “He’s lived that,” Hagel said. “That’s who he is.”

Black conservative leaders condemn assault on democracy Many of us became Republicans because of our belief in the power of faith, human dignity, self-governance, and the rule of law. The violent storming of the U.S. Capitol was a repulsive display of evil, not a peaceful demonstration that is emblematic of America, and we condemn it in the strongest terms possible. Equally disturbing are the conspiracy theories related to the election that led to it, which are being fueled by some politicians in our Party. We must examine reports of voting irregularities to build trust in our democracy, but the results of the election are clear - there was no widespread fraud on a large enough scale to overturn the election. Joe Biden will be president, and while we may disagree with him on many policy issues, we wish him well and stand ready to work with him where we can. Now is a time for the Republican Party to examine itself after losing the White House and Congress. Unless we get serious about debunking conspiracies, refocusing on solutions, and winning more minority votes, we will continue to be a minority Party. During this divisive time in America, we also urge conservatives to join us in recommitting ourselves to the words of the prophet Micah to ‘act justly and love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. The Family is a network of Black conservatives. We have always existed in American politics although our numbers are vastly undercounted. The Family spans the center-right landscape consisting of conservatives, Republicans, “Forever Trumpers” and “Never Trumpers,” Reagan Republicans, supply-siders, neocons and more. Actress, advocate, lends voice to domestic violence STACY M. BROWN NNPA - Samantina Zenon is a mental health care advocate, educator, and actress.
