Farmari 2011 Agricultural Exhibition 1–3 July 2011 New experiences for the whole family. The Farmari agricultural exhibition is a national event organised once each summer in different parts of Finland. On 1–3 July 2011, Kirjurinluoto Arena in Pori presents agriculture and the countryside to professionals and consumers alike. The versatile programme and hundreds of exhibitors provide information, new products, and nice activities for agriculture and forestry entrepreneurs as well as city residents. Farmari introduces countryside cuisine, experiences, and feelings as well as various animals, handicrafts, and new and old farm machines. This year’s Farmari exhibition marks ProAgria Satakunta’s 150th anniversary. The three-day exhibition is expected to attract about 70,000 visitors. Additional information: www.farmari.net
Pori Jazz Festival 9–17 July 2011 Pori Jazz, which is now arranged for the 46th time, gathers the superstars of jazz and other rhythm music in Pori. The large outdoor concerts are held at Kirjurinluoto Arena 14–17 July. The smaller concerts take place at the concert venues along the shores of the Kokemäenjoki River on 9–17 July. All in all, there will be about 140 concerts in Pori in July – over half of them free of charge. The summer 2011 schedule will be published in early spring. Pori Jazz is famous for its atmosphere, which attracts about 150,000 listeners to Pori every year. In addition to the atmosphere, the festival visitors appreciate the surroundings, performers, and repertoire. For these reasons, many of them visit the festival year after year. The 2010 Pori Jazz Festival attracted 155,000 visitors.
SUOMIAREENA 11–15 JULY 2011 Come and hear the new sound of discussion in Pori on 11–15 July 2011. In addition to Pori, discussion events will be held in Turku, Kokemäki, Nakkila, and Merikarvia. The subjects in summer 2011 will include voluntary work, taxation, world-class sports, health care, lobbying, and pornography. At SuomiAreena, we will witness a house building project, get to know a man’s room, and see public figures presenting summer fashion trends at Eetunaukio in Pori. Come and meet the ministers in the new government. The citizens’ square will be filled with dozens of tents in which various organisations showcase their operations and products. The week will conclude in a karaoke session with songs by Juha Watt Vainio. You can follow the SuomiAreena week on MTV’s Huomenta Suomi morning show or witness the action in person.

SATAKUNTA – UNICEF COUNTY 2011 Satakunta is the UNICEF county in 2011. The objective of the goodwill theme year is to increase the regional community spirit and support internationalisation education at schools. The charity recipient is the Schools for Africa project, which strives to ensure a quality education for all children. We aim to collect €1.5 per resident of the county. “UNICEF Finland invites every adult and child to join us in building a world in which the child’s right to a dignified and safe life is fulfilled.” The UNICEF year provides people with the opportunity to get to know the county and its residents by means of countless events and campaigns. Children and Youth Photo Festival 13 May to 12 June 2011 Pori Centre for Children’s Culture – The Network of Children’s Culture in the Satakunta Region is hosting the “Vähäx valottaa” children and youth photo festival from 13 May to 12 June 2011. The festival turns the streets of Pori into a photo gallery. During the festival, the streets and public spaces of Pori will feature more than thirty exhibitions, created in workshops organised by the Taikalamppu (Aladdin’s Lamp) network of regional art centres for children and young people, national photography centres, the Finnish Museum of Photography, and art schools for children and young people.
European Windsurfing Championships 8–12 June 2011 Windsurfers will gather in Yyteri for the European Windsurfing Championships in the Raceboard class for the first time. This historic event will prepare the ground for the World Championships in the same class in 2012. The competition will attract almost a hundred participants to the Yyteri Surf Centre. The events will kick off on 8 June with the registration of the competitors and their equipment and familiarisation with the competition area, and the actual competition is to start on 9 June and continue until 12 June. The Raceboard class has divisions for young people, adults (men, women), and seniors.
The theme of the festival is movement and affection. The movement is seen in the photographs as traces of movement or great emotions. We are moved by the photos, both physically and emotionally.
The competition is organised by Finnish Boardsailing Association/Yyteri Surf Centre in co-operation with the local yacht club (BSF) and Reposaaren Pelastusrengas ry (local association).

KIRJURINLUOTO SUMMER THEATRE 10 JUNE TO 9 JULY “Täydelliset häät” – a Finnish adaptation of the internationally successful play “Perfect Wedding”. After his stag night, Bill wakes up in the bridal suite on the wedding morning. His terrible headache is not made any better by the scantily clad, unknown cutie popping up from under the covers. Every trick in the book must now be tried immediately, for the bride is already knocking on the door. And just wait until the mother-in-law shows up, played by Ritva Oksanen. The doors start swinging and the wedding party is caught in such a whirlwind that it is hard to guess who will eventually end up on the altar. Or whether anybody will be wed at all – someone already had the wedding cake smashed in their face. This is a radiantly funny play with the right summer feeling. Step into the carousel of love and enjoy the pace of the farce. The play is directed by Mikko Viherjuuri, who is the director in residence at the Tampere Theatre and highly experienced in farce. With skilled actors and singers, he will stage a summer wedding that you will not easily forget.

12th-time Pori Folk 18–21 August 2011 This unique, ever-developing city festival will fill Pori with culture for four days. The programme includes music, dance, and handicrafts, presented by Finnish and international artists. Traditional folk feelings are conveyed by folk musicians and the handicraft market at Korsman House. Modern winds are blown from the outdoor stage at Eetunaukio and from new, surprising cultural directions. Special music and dance themes are expressed in the atmospheric concerts during the weekend.

Pori Jazz Kids Festival 9–13 July 2011 Pori Jazz Kids Festival is being held for the seventh time in the Kirjurinluoto Park 9–13 July. The Kids Festival will kick-start Pori Jazz on the opening weekend. For five days, holidaymakers and townsfolk can see popular performers at several venues. Every year, nearly 2,000 children and young people attend community singing events, musical playschools, music workshops, rhythm circles as well as concerts by young talents and music workshop attendees. YYTERI BEACH VOLLEY 27–31 JULY 2011 Yyteri will also be the venue for Finland’s all-time biggest beach volley event, now organised for the second time. This tournament will gather nearly all beach volley fans from juniors to veterans on the same sandy fields for almost a week. All the junior divisions from the E division upward as well as adults from amateurs to Finland’s best competitors are expected to show up. This event is organised by Yyteri Beach Volley together with the Finnish Volleyball Association and its South-Western division. Additional information: www.yyteribeachvolley.fi

LAIN§UOJATTOMAT THEATRE FESTIVAL 7–11 SEPTEMBER 2011 Lain§uojattomat (Outlaws) will take Pori by storm for the 12th time on 7–11 September. Wonderful performances will be available for all age groups – theatre, opera, musical theatre, performances, children’s theatre, improvisation, street theatre, stand-up comedy, circus, mime, clowns, club nights, and much more. Pori region is full of life
The centre of the region, Pori, offers a wellbalanced mixture of modern city landscape, fun-filled beach life as well as diverse cultural events and recreational activities. Those travelling to the region will do well to extend their expeditions outside the city centre. Local villages and municipalities offer excellent opportunities for hiking, fishing, canoeing, farmhouse accommodation, and many
other fun experiences. The local archipelago, such as Oura in Merikarvia, is rugged, yet beautiful maritime landscape at its best. You can experience the peaceful nature, for example, on the ridge route of “little Lapland” in Huittinen and at the Isoneva swamp conservation area in Pomarkku as well as the untamed Lake Joutsijärvi in Ulvila. Experi-
ence invigorating moments at the scenic Hiittenharju ridge area in Harjavalta or hike in the surroundings of Lake Pitkäjärvi in Kokemäki. In addition, acquaint yourself with the fascinating cultural history of the Pori Region, for example, at Kullaa’s Leineperi Ironworks area in Ulvila, the shipyard of the Ihana sailing ship in Luvia or the Tappuritapahtuma folklore event in Nakkila.

Ouraluoto – sea adventure on the island of maritime pilots
Pori is famous for its enormous summer events. In July, Pori Jazz will once again gather thousands of music lovers in the city. The social debate forum SuomiAreena, which is arranged at the same time, brings major Finnish and other European politicians to Pori. Those travelling to Pori should also explore Ahlainen, Reposaari, and Noormarkku.
Yyteri – Finland’s own Riviera
One of Pori’s main attractions is the six kilometre long Yyteri beach, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Finland. The lively area has many activities for people of all ages.
Kirjurinluoto is fun for the whole family
The magnificent river Kokemäenjoki runs through the city centre lending it its unique atmosphere. The beautiful river banks of Pori with its picturesque stone houses create a central-European feel. Kirjurinluoto is a delightful setting for a picnic or for more active pastimes. The pastures, flowers, peacocks, donkeys, billy goats, the kid’s playground and Viksu the Rook as well as the pretty beach and excellent services make for an unforgettable day.

There are two beautiful churches in the centre of Pomarkku. The old wooden church from the year 1802 with its restored wall paintings and unique pulpit is a sight worth seeing. The beautiful stone church dates back to year 1921.
Handcar travel expands your horizons
View the beautiful scenery in a truly unique way. The only handcar track open to tourists enables you to travel from Kankaanpää to Pori through Pomarkku and Noormarkku. The total length of the track is 48 km. The handcars seat two persons, and you can rent them at the old railway station in Pomarkku.
Treasures of nature
In Pomarkku, you can also enjoy the calm and peaceful nature. The Isoneva swamp conservation area is about 800 hectares of beautiful and easily accessible swamp, located alongside highway 23. You can easily explore the picturesque landscape using the convenient 3.3-km-long duckboard trails. There is also a bird observation tower along the route and excellent information boards as well as campfire and rest areas. Another destination worth exploring is Lake Isojärvi, which is the largest lake in Northern Satakunta. Its lovely nature and many islands are ideal for swimming and recreation. You should also visit Plootuluoto island.

Transportation to the Oura island by the open sea leaves from Merikarvia’s Krookka harbour. The archipelago is the epitome of rugged beauty and charming maritime landscape.
Merikarvianjoki river – fisherman’s dream
Thousands of rod fishers have been delighted by the generous catches available in the Merikarvianjoki River where all salmon and trout species found in Finland spawn. Sea trout, salmon, and powan have direct access from the sea to this 24-kilometre-long fishing area. In addition to fishing and recreation, you can also enjoy the sea in the winter. The fourstar holiday village Mericamping, with its highquality cottages, welcomes guests year-round.
Fascinating culture of Krookka
Those interested in culture should head to the Krookka port. The cultural summer of Merikarvia has a lot to offer. The seaside stage has many exhibitions and events during the summer. This coming summer marks the tenth anniversary of Ouraooppera, a musical play written by Professor Arvo Salo. This well-loved play, known to all locals and full of local colours, again acquires the stage it deserves by the sea.

You can enjoy the sea in the summer and winter. At Laitakari, you can admire the soft waves on a beautiful summer day or the foamy breakers in high winds. The outer archipelago of Luvia represents the versatile nature in the archipelago of Satakunta. The area has over 300 islands and islets.
Luvia’s big dream
The people of Luvia are realising their big dream. They are building a sailing ship called Ihana at Laitakari with respect paid to the traditional shipbuilding art. Luvia’s centuries-old tradition of building sailing ships is still blooming. Ihana will begin its maiden voyage in 2011. Come and see for yourself how the old shipbuilding tradition is still alive.
Culture and idyllic rural living
When you visit Luvia along the beautifully preserved village road, you can also see the handsome sandstone church as well as possibly the most modern library that the rural municipalities have ever seen. Luvia is active year-round. In the wintertime, you can enjoy high-quality musicals or an exciting ringette match courtesy of Luvian Kiekko -82, a team that has achieved both national and international success. The summertime is livened up by summer theatre, dances, and many other delightful summer events.

The Leineperi Ironworks is one of the best conserved and most complete ironworks areas in Finland. It delights the visitors with its cultural history, artisans’ workshops, many events, and natural beauty. The furnace, museums, blacksmith’s forge, mill, cafés, restaurants, and numerous shops selling handicrafts and art tell their story about the past and present of the area.

The Friitala House provides high-quality shopping opportunities in an old tannery. Decorations and giftware can be found. You can also learn more about the tannery days in the leather museum.

At Lake Joutsijärvi, you can experience the quiet lakeside wilderness at its best. In addition to the 27-km route around the lake, there are also shorter hiking trails, canoeing, traditional church boat rowing, relaxing heat in the sauna, and versatile accommodation options. Furthermore, Kylmälahti provides excellent surroundings for arranging parties and camps by the lake. You can admire the Kokemäenjoki River landscape by taking a boat trip or visiting the Hansa Port playgrond.

The Kokemäenjoki River flows through Nakkila in a deep channel, and its banks are covered by verdant groves. Canoeing and boating take you close to nature. The river flows rapidly towards the Pori delta; you can experience the power of the river and the peace of nature at the same time. The river’s several rapids attract fly fishers from all over Finland.
Villilä’s blooming manor culture The charming manor milieu now serves the modern movie and TV industry and media education. The main building also hosts banquets. The garden has been restored to its former glory by planting oldbreed perennials, bushes, and fruit trees. The park benches invite you to sit and enjoy the trickle of the fountain.
Salomonkallio is an outdoor person’s paradise
Salomonkallio offers versatile recreational opportunities year–round, including ice swimming, crosscountry and downhill skiing in the winter as well as golf, sauna, swimming, and hiking in the summer. Emil Cedercreutz Museum, history and culture In the heart of Satakunta, by the Kokemäenjoki River, you will find the museum based on the life work of the sculptor Emil Cedercreutz (1879–1949). Born in Köyliö, this famous sculptor, silhouette artist, author, and collector had his artist home, Harjula, built in the beautiful landscape by Kilukanlahti bay in 1914. Nowadays, the area around Harjula with its unique buildings and exhibitions is a large and versatile museum area.
Home of the cultural artisans Vanha Juustola, Kokemäki’s old cheese-making house is worth visiting. It operates as an idyllic art gallery throughout the year. There you can also purchase home textiles, carpet rags, handicrafts, jewellery made by a blacksmith, and much more. Taidekäytävä (Art Passage) is the coolest art exhibition in Satakunta.
Culture and history The versatile cultural offerings of Huittinen are centred in the Educational and Cultural Centre Kuninkainen. In the Risto Ryti Hall, you can see remarkable musical performances, sporting events, movies, and plays. At the museum of Huittinen, you can explore the Risto Ryti department and the art collection of the sculptor Lauri Leppänen. You should also visit the medieval St Catherine’s Church, which is a famous cultural sight, dating back to the 14th century.
Hiking in the picturesque landscape of Hiittenharju It is a real experience to go hiking on the Hiittenharju ridge throughout the year. You can admire the old banks of the ancient Litorina Sea and be active and feel refreshed in many ways. Traditional farm life of Uotila Explore the old family farm in the cultural landscape of the Kokemäenjoki River. Here, you can see a traditional closed yard of the Satakunta region and a 160-year-old renovated hall, which is used as a dining hall and café. The attic of the barn features a collection of more than 700 artefacts from the period of self-sufficiency. Groups can reserve a farm tour, conference and banquet premises as well as dining services.

Adventures in nature, on water and on horseback Huittinen has excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation on your own – in both winter and summer. Explore the picturesque landscape of the Virttaanharju, Vampula, Kännönvuori, Ripovuori, and Puurijärvi national park. The ridge route of “little Lapland” is part of the only uniform ridge area in South-Western Finland. Horseback riding and riding camps are provided by numerous horse ranches. For children, there are unforgettable experiences in the traffic park and farm animal yard. The river Punkalaitumenjoki, the river Loimijoki and the river Kokemäenjoki make it possible to go rowing, canoeing, and fishing.
