Kokemäenjoki River, cutting through the centre of Pori, creates its own atmosphere in the city. The beautiful stone houses on the southern beach promenade of Kokemäenjoki River date from the end of the 19th century and breathe the fancy atmosphere of the past times. Together with the green Kirjurinluoto, the north and south shores of Pori nowadays form a unique entity. Kirjurinluoto, having functioned as a recreational park for a century, is easily accessible by car or footbridge.

This is where children want to come and play!

Kirjurinluoto is Kokemäenjoki River's lush island right by the city centre. Many different play parks, such as Pelle Hermanni's park with its pirate ships, the Angry Birds play park and children's traffic park provide the young ones with activities for the whole day. Nature walks and frisbee golf are suitable for the whole family. Viksu Mustavaris (Viksu the Rook) and the nice animals of the park welcome everyone. The sandy beach tempts for a swim and the beautiful grass areas invite sunbathers for picnics on summer days.

Kirjurinluoto Arena The unique Kirjurinluoto Arena is located within a walking distance from the city centre, by the Kokemäenjoki shore. The open air event venue is an ideal location for concerts, fairs and exhibitions, having space for tens of thousands of people. Kirjurinluoto Arena offers an incredible setting for many kinds of events, the most familiar of which is the annual Pori Jazz Festival. Top artists and record audiences have taken to Kirjurinluoto Arena.

A meeting place for stars and fans

Kirjurinluoto is a large, verdant park area. Satakunta Garden Information Centre provides guidance on gardening. Tightly connected to the Garden Information Centre, the 9-hectare Hanhipuisto is an exhibition park for the species of trees, bushes and flora that flourish in Satakunta. Additionally, there is a wonderful rocky garden, an art garden, a peony garden and a square with roses. There is a bridge and a ferry from Hanhipuisto to Polsanluoto, where you can find a nature trail meant for exhibiting plants in their natural habitat.

Nature trails

The nature trails in Kirjurinluoto, Hanhiluoto and Polsanluoto have gained huge popularity among outdoor exercisers. The area has 3.4 kilometres of paths that are lit and maintained throughout the year. In the summer time, there are also duckboards and a ferry boat in Polsanluoto. In the winter time, there is an area for skiing, ski tracks and an ice skating rink.

Pori Jazz Festival 13–21 July Pori Jazz is a major international event with top-notch performers from around the world. The unique atmosphere, the highquality and diverse program, good services and the beautiful framework attract approximately 150,000 visitors to over 100 concerts every year. In the Pori region, unique summer events such as Pori Jazz and SuomiAreena debate forum await travellers. There are also many other events, such as summer theatres and parties, fairs, concerts, exhibitions and sport events.

Enjoy also the Pori Jazz Kids Festival which is aimed at children and families and will be organised for the ninth time this year. There will be 70 events consisting of music workshops, instrument construction and concerts. There will be five days of events on three stages and the best of all is that all events are free of charge! Monday, July 15th, is the bilingual Svenska Dagen.

Finland's largest societal summer event SuomiAreena will be organised for the eighth time in Pori. There will be 111 events, in which over 500 people discuss politics, economy, culture and sports. The main collaboration partners of the summer are the Parliament, Finnish Red Cross and Sonera. The Parliament has about twenty events, and Finnish Red Cross will build a refugee camp on Pori's Liisantori which can accommodate approximately 400 people. All events are free of charge. SuomiAreena's main organisers are the City of Pori and MTV3. Angry Birds will participate this year as well.

On the first weekend of August, the Middle Ages will arrive in Ulvila's Hansa harbour, on the Kokemäenjoki River shore! Ulvila's international Hanseatic fair will offer medieval music, food, street theatre, workmanship of crafters and fishers, medieval products, experiences with knights in battle, children's workshops and competitions as well as camp sites depicting medieval life. Performers, knights and Hanseatic tradesmen will arrive from e.g. Estonia, France and Portugal. Satasoitto is a chamber and wind music festival, organised annually in Kokemäki and Harjavalta. The current form of the festival was born in 2008 when the chamber music event Satasoitto, organised in Kokemäki, and the wind music festival Vasket Vallassa, organised in Harjavalta in 2000-2007, joined forces.

Culture

Juselius mausoleum is one of Pori's most well known sights. Mining counsellor F.A. Juselius had it built as the last resting place for his daughter Sigrid who died at the age of 11. Originally, the mausoleum was adorned by frescos by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, but they were later destroyed. The current frescos were created by artist Jorma Gallen-Kallela as per his father's sketches.

The old wooden church of Harjavalta The oldest church in the Harjavalta parish was renovated into the current-style wooden church in 1870. The church is open in the summer time, for example for weddings and concerts.

Luvia's sandstone church Luvia's stone church was designed by Josef Stenbäck and it was meant to replace the old demolished wooden church. There is a villa for 5-11 people a couple of kilometres from the Pori market place, on the Huvilajuova shore. There are 2 bedrooms and a summer room on the top floor of the main building. There is a kitchen, living room and dining room downstairs. The wood-fired sauna on the yard has a dressing room and a bedroom.

Pori's Tuulipuisto and Information Centre The centre provides current information on the wind power production by Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy as well as wind power in general. On the yard of the Information Centre, there is also a bird observation tower that visitors can utilise. Come to the Bothnian Sea National Park and familiarise yourself with the unique and constantly changing insular nature, caused by land uplift. If you are taking a trip for a day or two, it is recommended to depart from any harbour on the coast and head for the lovely lighthouse islands or the rugged outer archipelago. The landscape can also be enjoyed by canoeing on the more sheltered areas of the archipelago. The avifauna of the area is also plentiful.
