Constructing Logbook Week 8 Jiawei CHEN

Studio Activities Figure 1 shows the double glaze window in the oval pavilion. The gap between the two glazes of window helps insulate noise and heat.

Studio Activities Figure 3 presents the pop-‐up window in the oval pavilion. The steel hood of the pop-‐up window protects the double glaze window from the damage of water seep into the glass, which will lead to the precipitation of rainwater. Besides, for the sake of installation and maintenance convenience, the joint between the timber floors were butt-‐joint.

Studio Activities Due to some small mistakes in measurements of materials, when the steel hood of the pop-‐up was installing, the brick veneer wall have to be cut for the steel hood to fit in. (Please refer to Figure 4)

Cut Figure 4

Studio Activities According to Figure 5, the water related issues are not fully handled. Since the drainage system is not fully considered, drip line can be observed under the steel hood of the pop-‐up window. The drip line of the water caused the rust in the steel hood of the pop-‐up window.

Glass Property:

Types and manufacture:

Porosity/ Permeability: Non-‐porous/ waterproof Durability/ Life span: typically very durable-‐-‐-‐chemical, rust and rot resistant. Hardness: high; can be scratch with a metallic object Cost: generally expensive to produce and transport Two types of glass: Flat glass (typically sheets of clear or tinted float, laminated tempered, wired, etc) Shaped Glass (curved, blocks ,channels, tubes, fibers) Float glass is now the most common glass production process in the world

Float glass-‐-‐types:

1. CLEAR FLOAT GLASS (annealed glass) Simplest and cheapest glass product; no further treatment beyond the float fabrication Ideal in low risk/ low cost/ small size glazing scenarios; 2. LAMINATED GLASS A tough plastic interlayer (PVB) is bonded together between two glass panes Improves the security and safety of the glass product; sharp fragments tend to adhere to the plastic rather than falling apart 3. TEMPERED GLASS The bending strength is increased by a factor of -‐5 times that of annealed glass; break (shatter) into small, pellet shaped pieces rather than sharp shards. -‐  Ideal to use in highly exposed situations (balustrates, partitions, facades) or when the sizes required are particularly large

Glass—Other types & products:

-‐  Tinted Glass: useful in sun-‐exposed situations to reduce visible light transfer -‐  Wired Glass: a steel wire mesh is boned together between two glass panes; accepted as a low-‐ cost fire glass -‐  Patterned Glass: made with a rolled glass process; typically used when privacy and light are required -‐  Curved Glass: produced in moulds that are created to meet the specific design requirements; expensive -‐  Photovolatic Glass: with integrated solar cells -‐  Glass Channels: used in façade systems -‐  Slumped and formed Glass: used as design features -‐  Glass fibers: hair-‐like strands; used in telecommunictaions

Window Sash: .a glazed window frame.(Please refer to Figure 7). (Collinsdictionary.com, 2014)

Deflection:

“the perpendicular distance a spanning member deviates from a true course under transverse loading, increasing with load and span, and decreasing with and increase in the moment of inertia of the section or the modulus of elasticity of the material.”. (Ching, 2013).

Moment of inertia :

“Sum of the products of each elements of an area and the square of its distance from a coplanar axis of rotation. (Ching, 2013).
