The FENNEC FOX, one of the most adorable/smallest foxes in the whole world. Known for its big ears and for it’s harsh life in the deserts, the Vulpes zerda is possibly the most fascinating of the Canidae family. To start off, the Fennec fox mainly lives near Northern Africa and throughout the Sahara Desert. Its habitat is mainly inhabited deserts and semi deserts which it lives through by taking its cream colored fur to its advantage. It’s also known to survive extreme ranges of temperature from 18 °C to 47 °C. It has a diet of insects, snails, lizards, rodents, birds, eggs, and even plant matter such as fruits and berries. One of the most useful parts of the Fennec fox survival would be its ears. Since humans as well as horses are one of the few animals that have sweat glands throughout their bodies, the Fennec fox conduct heat by allowing their ears to radiate or break up the heat from their faces. Their ears also allows them to easily hear small insects through the sand, as well as hear predators. A similar thing can be said about its fur, which allows them to survive the warmth of hot days as well as keep a well made temperature in the cold nights. The fur also allows their feet to be somewhat like snowshoes and let them walk easy on the hot sand. They also have claws which allows them to dig and catch prey. Like wolf, dogs, and other canidae, they are social creatures, only consisting of ten per pack. They also mate between January through March and stay with their partner for life. Like all animals, the taxonomy of the Fennec fox is quite complex, and can be organized into several different parts. The first being the Kingdom, in which it is it has the category of Animalia. Animalia is one of the five parts of Kingdom, and consist of having multicellular organisms, unlike Protista. Next is Chordata, which is part of Phylum. Chordata means it has either an a notochord, a hollow dorsal nerve cord, a post-anal tail, and other accessories for at least some period of their life cycle. Then comes Mammalia, which is categorized in Class. Mammalias are different mainly because they are warm blooded, usually produce milk, and have an external reproductive system. It also usually has hair or fur over parts of their body. Then there lies Carnivora, which is in Order area. The animals here are know to have specifically sharp teeth, as well as having to adapt to eating flesh. We then go to Canidae, which is being housed by Family. These types of mammals that have a highly complex social structure, similar teeth, and a similar to almost same body structure, and are usually nocturnal. Finally, we have the Vulpes zerda, or the Fennec fox in latin for a Genus. Then the Species, which is the Fennec Fox itself. After looking at the Fennec fox, I decided that it would be best to compare it to two animals of Carnivora. Mainly, the American grizzly bear and the Snowy owl. As you can see, they have many differences such as different environments, size, and abilities. There are also
multiple traits that is shared between two animals, one of them being good hearing. But there has been no trait that is universally shared. We can also be able to connect and see what the three organisms have more in common from a scientific point or in set theory. Several examples would be;
∩ Bear =(omnivores, fur, claws)
a. Fox
(The intersection of Fox traits and Bear traits are that they both have claws, fur, and are omnivores )
∈ Fox
b. social
(social is an element of Fox traits) c. Fox U B ear= (Omnivores, Fur, Claws, Desert, Forest, Bear, Fox) (The union between the Fox traits and Bear traits) d. Forest - desert (Forest is the opposite of the Desert)
∉
e. forest Fox
(Forest is not an element of Fox traits) In conclusion, the Fennec Fox is an interesting animal by multiple standards. It is extremely resilient when it comes to the desert, and has amazing survival skills. It also interesting with its social order, as well as its dietary habits. I hope you learned a lot about one of the greatest fox out there.
