Hout Bay fencer gears up to make his point Don’t be fooled by his piercing blue eyes and ready smile, you wouldn’t want to meet Hout Bay fencer Jacques Viljoen on the fencing piste; well, not if he had a sword in his hand, reports JOHN ADAMS

I

t was Saturday morning at the Italian Club in Rugby and it was filled with the sound of metal crashing on metal. Dramatic shouts of the varied age range and skill level of fencers communicated the intensity of the group. They participate in their training regimen because of their love of the sport and the possibility of becoming the next standout fencer in South Africa. O n e s t u d e n t vo l u n t a r i ly helped a junior fencer and calmly coached the prodigy on his technique. This player coach is no novice to coaching or fencing competition. He is 21-year-old senior division fencer, Jacques Viljoen, South Africa's number one fencer in foil.

“For beginners, you have to pass on your knowledge. I want them to be good,” explained Viljoen. “I want them to be able to beat me in a few years because the better they get the better I will get.” Viljoen has used his skills in fencing to take him all over the world for competitions and the opportunities to teach other upand-coming fencers. In 2007, Viljoen spent a year in the UK teaching students fencing techniques and competing on the junior circuit. Upon his return to South Africa, Viljoen decided to continue his fencing career but also to take an active role in giving back to the country's fencing programme by involving himself in administrative roles in organisations such as University Fencing South Africa and the UCT Fencing Club. “There is no point in complaining about what we don't have in fencing in South Africa, rather make it better.” For all he does to increase the popularity of fencing, Viljoen

continues to set his sights on his goals; including bettering his second place finish at last year’s senior nationals. “Last year, I came in second. This year all I want to do is win,” said the determined top-ranked fencer. No matter the outcome this coming weekend, Viljoen’s schedule will keep him busy in the coming weeks. After the senior nationals at UCT, he will compete in the University Sport South Africa Championships next weekend also hosted at UCT. At the end of the month, Viljoen, fellow SA fencer Jay New, from Noordhoek, and coach Misha Galoukin will head to Belgrade, Serbia, to compete in University World Championships, considered by many as the most prestigious competition outside of the Olympic Games. Viljoen loves the opportunities fencing has provided for him, including the ability to see new places and meet new people. “The friends I have made all over the world will be my friends

the rest of my life.” As the students cleared from the practice area and went home, Viljoen tried once again to promote the sport he loves and said, “Anyone can pick up a sword. Go for it. It is so fun. Anyone can do it.” With a big grin he

added, “Sure it is a sport and it is very sophisticated but it is so enjoyable. “There is nothing more exciting than a sword fight, and everyone should do it at least once in their lifetime.” ● For more information about the national champs, call 072 194 1926.

Travelling along the waterways from town to the V&A ORIELLE BERRY

T

here are few better ways to see a city or part of it than by traversing its waterways at a leisurely pace. The waterfront has long been in need of a water taxi where visitors or simply those who want to make their way from the city centre to the V&A Waterfront, or the other way round, can sit back, enjoy the scenery and the sounds of the water lapping at the sides of their boat and simply hop on and off, as is their wont. Last week, a 20-year plan was finally realised when the marina lock and waterway was officially opened and a happy band of journalists and officials became the first group to test drive or rather float on the canal, experiencing the rather dramatic opening and closing of the lock and taking the trip from the waterfront to the final point of disembarkation next to the Convention Centre. The V&A Waterfront and the city centre have been separated, if not by road then by water, even prior to the reclamation of the foreshore in 1940. Planning was actually put into place for the linking of these two vital parts of the city in 1988 when the V&A first opened. But as many projects where such immense technical and financial logistics are involved, it took a lot longer than anticipated. Small wonder then that several contracting teams were hauled on board to map out the lock and design – which included the construction of massive lock gates, floating fenders, hydraulics and two lifting bridges. But the final result of the Marina Lock consists of an impressive engineering feat: the large steel gates of the lock provide the link between the tidal waters of the waterfront and the canal. Once ferries enter the lock it is pumped down to the level of the water in the harbour,

enabling a smooth transition into and out of the docking point at the Two Oceans Aquarium. The boat passes exclusive apartments that most cannot afford but can now ogle at, past the One & Only Hotel and its adjacent apartments, set right on the canal amid a plethora of greenery and finally, one catches a glimpse of the city centre’s skyscrapers as the boat chugs into the city centre dock, next to the Westin Grand Hotel. Starting last week, two water taxis now operate daily from 8am to 4pm – leaving the city docking point every hour and the V&A docking point every half hour. If you’re taking the trip from town, the ferries pass under the foreshore freeway bridges and pass the Roggebaai canal. There will be a ferry stop at the City Lodge Hotel after which the ferries continue along the Gateway Canal where you can view the imposing Amsterdam Ramparts. They then continue their gentle pace into the Marina Canal, proceed under the two lifting bridges and finally dock at the aquarium. Steven Bentley, the harbour master of the V&A, commented prior to boarding the taxis that the canals surrounding the waterfront can be regarded as a great green lung. To this end the change of water volume that occurs every three days will allow sea life and vegetation to continue thriving below sea level. The 1 985 metre canal will take approximately 15 minutes to traverse, taking into consideration the closing of the gates, the flooding of the lock and the docking and subsequent disembarkation. Prior to the introduction of the taxis, the canal was used for dragon boat racing, (two brightly coloured boats passed us as we were chugging along). With the introduction of the taxis, at a cost of R20 a trip for an adult and R10 for a child under 12, the canal will now be able to

enjoyed by more Capetonians. As David Green, the CEO of the V&A Waterfront commented about the City’s first navigable canal lock: “It’s a canal to be used and to be used by all. If it’s not being enjoyed there’s something wrong with my team.”

And as if those who had been privy to the first trip did not already know, he pointed out: “This is not only an operational taxi, this is entertainment – and this is exactly what the V&A is all about – providing world class entertainment.”

Presentation on the life of Janusz Korczak Champion of the Child: Janusz Korczak, the inspiring story of the Polish-Jewish doctor, writer and educator who devoted his life to the needs and plight of children, regardless of nationality or religion, will be presented by the leading authority on his life and works, Dr Avi Tsur, at the Cape Town Holocaust Centre, Albow Centre, Gardens, on Wednesday June 17, at 8pm. Dr Tsur will be accompanied by artist and Holocaust survivor, Itzchak Belfer, who was raised in Dr Korczak’s Jewish Orphanage. This lecture is part of a series of events dealing with the rights of the child, including an art exhibition, at the SA National Gallery’s annexe on Youth Day.

Kgomotso receives her R10 000 cheque from our Metropolitan Cover2go Promoter and Shoprite Mokopane’s Store Manager.

Kgomotso Makgalwa is the deserving winner of our April Metropolitan Cover2go Cashback Funeral Policy “Lucky Draw” and she takes home R10 000 in cash! “I can’t believe it - I’ve never had so much money before,” says this 29-year old educator from Mahwelereng in Limpopo. How will she spend her prize? “ I’m going to invest it for my daughter,” she says. “She’s only 18 months old but it will make a big difference to her future.” Spoken with the wisdom of a true teacher! But Kgomotso has already made a big difference to her child’s future! By taking out a Cashback Funeral Policy, she gets R10 000 cover for the next 5 years, in case

of her death, and R2 000 free cover for her child. All for only R49.99 a month! And there’s more! If Kgomotso pays all her monthly premiums and is still living after 5 years, she gets ALL of her premiums back in cash - an amount of R3 000 to spend as she likes! You don’t have to be as smart as a teacher to start a Cashback Funeral Policy. Just visit a Shoprite store and buy a Starter Pack, which has a Policy Card inside. Take this (and your ID) to any Shoprite Money Market counter and pay the first monthly premium to start your policy. Everything you need to know is inside the Starter Pack. ”It’s very easy to understand,” says our teacher!

It’s also easy to win R10 000! Don’t forget to enter the SMS competition when you buy your Starter Pack. There’s another R10 000 up for grabs! It could be yours! For more information, call the Metropolitan Cover2go Call Centre at Sharecall 0860 2683 7246 or look out for a Cover2go Promoter in selected Shoprite stores.

■ A photograph of Julie Frost when she was younger. She was found dead in a flat in Green Point.

■ Mourning the loss of Julie Frost of Green Point, are, from back, left, brother-in-law Durell Ahir, father Premchand Durgapersadh with mother Reena Durgapersad, sister Vanita Ahir and son Emilio Frost.

Mum found dead in flat T

he 20-hour drive from KwaZulu Natal to Cape Town was agonising, yet hopeful, as the Durgapersad family had only one thought lingering in their minds – “Please, let it not be our daughter”. But Reena Durgapersad and her husband Premchand Durgapersadh’s visit to the mortuary confirmed their greatest fear. Their daughter, Julie Frost, 34, was found dead in a flat in Fawlty Towers in Portswood Road, Green Point on Monday May 25 after 11pm. The family said it appears that their daughter was strangled with a pink scarf. According to a statement, submitted to Sea Point police, a neighbour apparently heard Ms Frost scream, said Inspector Bheki Xulu. Minutes later, her 38-year-old Scottish boyfriend (whose name is known to the Atlantic Sun) came running in search of assistance because he said Ms Frost was not breathing, after he found her hanging in the bathroom. The neighbour called the police

and ambulance who came to the scene. Ms Durgapersad said other neighbours said they had heard Ms Frost and her boyfriend arguing. She screamed and later gasped for breath. Inspector Xulu said when police arrived, Ms Frost’s body was on the bed. Ms Frost was living with her boyfriend of 15 months for about 10 months at the Fawlty Towers, where he worked as a receptionist, said Nicholas Zoghby, the owner of the holiday self-catering apartments. “We gave him a flat because he worked here,” said Mr Zoghby, who lives on the premises. Mr Zoghby said he gave the boyfriend a written notice two weeks prior to the incident to vacate the property because his work was “not satisfactory”. Ms Frost’s family, who last saw her 10 years ago but communicated telephonically, did not know that she was dating. Vanita Ahir heard her sister was dead when she called Ms Frost’s former boyfriend to find her sister. He told Ms Ahir that he heard

from friends that Ms Frost was dead and gave her Sea Point police station’s contact details. The family left KZN for Cape Town on Wednesday (May 27) evening to identify Ms Frost’s body. “As a mother, you don’t expect it. No mother ever wants to know that her child is dead. It breaks my heart to pieces. It’s not easy,” said Ms Durgapersad, with tears welling in her eyes. Bursting into tears, Ms Ahir said: “I will miss everything about my sister. She always cared for me.” Ms Frost’s son Emilio, 15, said: “I didn’t know what to feel. I was very confused.” A stern Mr Durgapersadh said he will miss his lively, outgoing daughter. “Justice must prevail,” said Mr Durgapersadh. Inspector Xulu said after investigation by Captain Raymond Talmakkies and Superintendent Tonny Roux, Ms Frost’s current boyfriend was arrested for murder. He appeared at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday June 1 when bail was opposed. He is expected to appear this morning, Thursday June 4.

■ Mayor Dan Plato,Table Mountain area manager Paddy Gordon and comedian Marc Lottering cast their votes.

Help make Table Mountain one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature LAUREN MENDOZA A group of Capetonians gathered atop Table Mountain on Tuesday morning to continue their efforts to help the icon of Cape Town be recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. “All of us need to rally together,” said Mayor Dan Plato. “We need to spread the news across the world that Table Mountain is definitely one of these wonders in the world.” The nearly 50 people in attendance voted at various computers set up in the mountaintop café and were entertained by comedian Marc Lottering. “I know that anything is possible,” explained Mr Lottering. “And I know that Table Mountain can be one of the wonders of the world. We just need to vote.” Abigail Mpotina, from Khayelitsha, said this selection would give outsiders a different perspective of the country. “Let’s face it, South Africa is a developing country so for Table

Mountain to be considered, it would really put South Africa at a higher level.” Sabine Lehmann, CEO of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, explained that the current process for voting is done exclusively on the internet at www.votefortablemountain.com For those without access to the internet, Ms Lehmann recommends voting at a friend’s house although voters must have a valid email address to take part. She recommends that everyone take time to vote for Table Mountain before the Tuesday July 7 deadline. Whether Table Mountain receives worldwide recognition or not, Ms Lehmann believes the icon will remain the crowning jewel of the city. “I think Table Mountain is an anchor for Cape Town,” she said, “it has so many different meanings to different people, and Cape Town wouldn’t be the city it is without it.”

The 18 paddlers row in unison as they glide their “dragons” through the choppy waters in hopes of crossing the finish line first. Retired teachers’ association launched Nazeema Omar, Retired Teachers’ Association The Western Cape Retired Teachers’ Association was launched on Saturday March 28, at Oude Molen Technical High School in Pinelands. The wonderful turnout was encouraging as was the support by the former MEC for education, Yousuf Gabru. Our respected guests of honour, the retired teachers, were heartened by the fact that Mr Gabru certainly understood and acknowledged the crisis in education as expressed by most present. The Retired Teachers’ Association also values the support of Ann Schlebush and her team from the WCED. Help make Table Mountain one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature LAUREN MENDOZA A group of Capetonians gathered atop Table Mountain last Tuesday morning to continue their efforts to help the icon of Cape Town be recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

“Let’s face it, South Africa is a developing country so for Table Mountain to be considered, it would really put South Africa at a higher level.” Sabine Lehmann, CEO of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, explained that the current process for voting is done exclusively on the internet at www.votefortablemountain.com

ALIWAL GARDENS/ RIVERTON MEWS

For those without access to the internet, Ms Lehmann recommends voting at a friend’s house although voters must have a valid email address to take part. She recommends that everyone take time to vote for Table Mountain before the Tuesday July 7 deadline. Whether Table Mountain receives worldwide recognition or not, Ms Lehmann believes the icon will remain the crowning jewel of the city. “I think Table Mountain is an anchor for Cape Town,” she said, “it has so many different meanings to different people, and Cape Town wouldn’t be the city it is without it,” she said.

■ Old Mutual Academy’s Keeno Shellar in action during a Mr Price fixture in Mitchell’s Plain.

Opportunity knocks as Old Mutual player signs with Supersport United JOHN ADAMS Old Mutual Academy’s Keeno Shellar could bring unprecedented success to the national team in future. That is according to his high school soccer coach, Dawood Tregonning. Shellar has turned heads and denied opponents access to goal since he was a little boy. When he’s not turning out for the Academy’s under-19 squad, Sheller stars for Beacon Hill High, who are second on the Mr Price senior schools log. In 2008, he was Old Mutual Academy’s Vodacom league player of the year. Now he has taken another step in the maturation process and signed a contract with PSL outfit Super Sport.

“I want to take my soccer as far as possible. I’m going to have to train hard to get there and I am prepared to work for my goal,” said Shellar. Coaches who have had the opportunity to train the young star have marvelled at his abilities, leadership and work ethic. “He is very quiet off the field, but on the field he is a different person,” said Neil Pain, who coached him for the past three years in the Vodacom league. “When he talks, the other players listen because they know it is going to be beneficial. He is outstanding in class and on the field. He is magnificent academically and is well-disciplined,” Tregonning added.

Despite the accolades, Shellar remains well-grounded and very close to his family. With the confidence and excitement of a new adventure knocking at his door, Keeno is still listening to the instructions of his coaches and his parents’ advice. “He will just need the right guidance. When youngsters leave Cape Town, especially to go to Johannesburg, they struggle because it is tough out there. But I think he could go all the way because on just football abilities, he has all the credentials, said Pain. The highest praise for Shellar came from Tregonning. “If we want to make Bafana Bafana a success, then they need Keeno on the team,” he said

Athlone fencers get to the point point for championships The clang of metal rattles in the background as the buzzer signifies the winners and losers on the fencing piste, but the team coached by Christel House teacher Randall Daniels are already winners just by donning their fencing kit, writes JOHN ADAMS

S

outh Africa is not strong in fencing by world standards, says the 2008 South African Olympic fencing coach, Randall Daniels, who now spends his time teaching pupils at the Christel House, and coaching the school’s fencing team. “The product and pride of bringing fencing to these children is that we are able to give them a chance.” Daniels grew up in Athlone during the early 70s and was introduced to fencing while walking home one day and seeing a group of children “sword fighting.” As he looked into the practice area, he was approached by the club coach, Gwen Logan. “I was asked if I wanted to give it a try, and I really enjoyed it,” recalled Daniels. “Fencing started something that changed my whole life. I had to determine the path I was on, and I had to achieve education. “And I did because of the discipline I learned in fencing.” For the past three years , Daniels has dedicated his time to teaching the children at Christel House and now he has more than 20 fencers on his club team. Last year two of his fencers, Sandisiwe Dingane and Wanda Mat-

shaya, were selected to represent South Africa against top international competition in Catalonia. However, Daniels does not measure success with wins and losses, but with how the sport changes the character of those who walked the same neighborhoods he did as a child.”If we can involve our kids in sport, the chances of them going down the road of negativity like drugs or any other thing is lessened,” said Daniels. “Those who participate tend to stay in school and even carry on studying further.”

One student who typifies what Daniels expects is team leader, Kristen Matthews. Matthews was given the opportunity to learn fencing and travel South Africa because of assistance from Christel House and the financial support from Western Province Fencing. But the most valuable opportunity could be the confidence she has gained through the sport. “When I fence it is not about winning,” said the Grade 11 student from Manenberg. “It is about how I fence, and if I lose I know I don't have to lose the

same way the next time.” Daniels continues to challenge all his pupils beyond just fencing, and Matthews could be well on her way to a successful life on and off the fencing strip. “It was up to me to decide if I want this or if I want that in life, and I knew I didn’t want to end up walking around in circles,” said Matthews. “Many want to first go down the wrong road and then go down the right road, and I just chose the road that would give me a better future.” Matthews is another example of

what Daniels said started the day his childhood coach offered him an alternative to disadvantaged living. “Giving back is the passion we were given on the day my coach decided to give her time to us,” said Daniels. In turn we are doing very much the same to our new learners in the hope that they would inspire others.” ● The fencing senior national championship takes place at UCT on Saturday and Sunday June 13 and 14. ■ Fans make themselves heard during a Confederations Cup game.

SPORT

PICTURE: RICHARD DUCHON

The ‘buzzzzz’is here to stay T

he buzz of the Confederations Cup is gently fading into the South African night and there are questions if the “buzz makers” will be present when the World Cup returns to South African soil in 2010. The vuvuzela, possibly originating from Zulu meaning “making noise” or from every other language meaning “death to your ears and sanity”, is a long plastic trumpet used in South Africa to create a buzz at soccer matches. The noise is often described as the sound of an elephant although many have described it as the sound of a swarm of bees. Nonetheless, the South African spirit horn is causing quite a stir among the international community, some even calling for its ban from the 2010 World Cup. FIFA has received thousands of calls from angry fans complaining that the sound of the vuvuzela is not only distracting when watching the matches on television but it also drowns out the commentators. Coaches and players have joined in with the disapproving fans and have voiced their displeasure.

Dutch soccer coach, Bert Van Marwijk told reporters that the sound of the vuvuzela interferes with his ability to coach his players on the field. Spanish midfielder, Xabi Alonso, added that the noise makes it nearly impossible to communicate between teammates on the pitch, and that it doesn’t add any atmosphere into the stadium. He also admitted that the noise makes it difficult to concentrate while playing. Some fans at the stadium who came to sit and enjoy a quite afternoon or evening of soccer, complained that the decibel level of the vuvuzela causes permanent ear damage. They claim the damage is magnified when a die-hard Bafana Bafana fan, sitting directly behind them, blasts the vuvuzela right into their eardrum. However, the only concern FIFA has voiced over the vuvuzela came out of a meeting in 2008 in which they conditionally approved the noisemaker for the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup as long as they remain free from logos and advertisements and as long as “hooligans don’t use the vuvuzela as a weapon.”

John Adams Reports

Entrepreneurs have pointed to the financial gains as the best reason to keep the instrument in the stadiums. Upon the FIFA’s announcement in 2008 allowing the vuvuzelas, there were more than 20 000 plastic instruments sold in a 24-hour period. Economists project more than 50 000 additional instruments sold during the World Cup next year. FIFA President Sepp Blatter remains in support of the vuvuzela as a traditional African sound, but many object to its African heritage claiming that the instrument’s prototype was developed in America. However, South Africans are quick to point out that life began at the Cradle of Humanity located in Maropeng in Gauteng, and thus everything comes from Africa including the vuvuzela. No doubt, the debate will rage until the completion of the 2010 World Cup, and the opinions will be as diverse as the countries participating in the most watched sporting event; but as for now, keep practising because the vuvuzela is here to stay. ● John Adams is a journalism intern from the University of Southern California who is currently working at Cape Community Newspapers which publishes the Athlone News and 13 other titles.

Women feature in bumper racing programme ADRIAN PFEIFER It’s going to be Women’s Day at Killarney on Saturday July 4, featuring a full programme of championship racing to which all women will be admitted free of charge. Another feature of the bumper 15event programme is that it’s strictly a cars-only meeting. And with Danica Patrick having established herself as one of the best drivers in America after finishing third in the Indy 500 last month, the progress of women drivers like Andrea Bate, Reinette van Rensburg, Jo Humble and Stephanie Makelberger, will be followed with interest. The first South African appearance of Egmont Baumgartner in the Formula Libre events should be another absorbing feature of the meeting. Baumgartner is here from Europe, where he has been racing with considerable success. He has two cars, a Formula 3 Martini Renault and a Formula BMW and plans to test them both before making his final choice. The Nashua Porsche Cup Challenge events are going to give Porsche GT-2R driver Laurent Gross a chance to be first across the line again. He was surprisingly beaten by Neil Hawkins in the NA Carrera Sports and GT events at the most recent meeting. The Indy Oil Clubman races have

And although the battle up front is likely to be BMW against Volksie, the weather could still play a decisive role, with racing in the rain often more exciting than in the dry. Although Datsun 140Z driver Martin Richards has been in great form in the CAR Magazine Classic events, big guys like Keith Rose

(Porsche 911) and Chris Carolin (Mazda Capella rotary) will be out to knock him over this time. Spine Road High stake their claim on senior schools crown T

he first half of the Mr Price league ended with Spine Road High as log leaders after a 2-0 victory over Hangover Park’s Mount View, at the Rocklands sports fields, on Saturday. The 16-team secondary school league plays every Saturday morning and is funded by local businesspeople in the area, who have a passion to bring learners back to school and give them a chance to excel in life, school and soccer. “The plan was to put together a league that was well run, organised and had the best talent in Mitchell’s

‘Sabre is fast, explosive and aggressive. You have to have seven different scenarios in your head before your start, and then you have to execute them in a second or two.’

■ Kommetjie Fencer Ashley Marais is focused on winning the national championships, which will be held at UCT on Saturday and Sunday June 13 and 14.

Fencers gear up for national championships From page 24 Marais, who practises at the Italian Club in Rugby, loved those early times as a kid which included a lot of laughing and a ton of games. “My first coach would have us play Cavaliers and Musketeers and we would run around with swords in our hands stabbing people,” smiled the young Marais. “That was fun for me as a kid. And you have to be able to have fun when you begin and then later you

will be able to find the discipline.” Marais found that discipline when he began training with his current coach, Misha Galoukin, an ex-Olympian and former Olympic coach for Russia. Marais’ technical abilities in foil and epee were sharpened, but he quickly became enamoured with sabre, a type of fencing that uses a smaller sword and allows scoring from the blade and not just the point of the sword. “Sabre is fast, explosive and

aggressive, and that is what I enjoy about it,” explained the intense Marais. “It is how fast you have to work your mind and body together. You are constantly thinking. You have to have seven different scenarios in your head before you start, and then you have to be able to execute them in a second or two.” For now, Marais continues to practice two to three times a week with Galoukin and often has to drive more than 60 kilometres from

his home in Kommetjie just to have a 45-minute lesson with the coach. “Lessons with Misha are very aggressive, intense and vigorous,” said the fencer. “I will push myself through it and by the end I just fall down. If I am lying on the ground soaking in my own sweat, I feel that it was a fantastic lesson.” Under the teaching of Galoukin, Marais has represented South Africa in fencing in 16 countries and in numerous competitions.

Despite the often lengthy travel required to compete, Marais continues to work hard and live out his dream. “It is any person’s dream to represent their country in some form or another,” said Marais with pride. “And I am living out that dream.” ● The fencing senior national championship takes place at UCT on Saturday and Sunday June 13 and 14. s Cape Town’s central city received recognition for its renovation and rejuvenation, part of the city centre remains vacant, incomplete and dangerous behind the shadow of this acclaim. Last week the International Downtown’s Association (IDA), comprising more than 650 member organisations on four continents, chose Cape Town as Downtown of the Month after years of renovation and rejuvenation. “This recognition is crucial for the future sustainability of the central city,” said Theodore Yach, chairman of the Central City Improvement District (CCID). “The central city is the major economic driver in the Metropole as well as being the heart of [major activities] in the Metropole.” The Cape Town Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry paid tribute to the recognition of the central city’s advocates, such as the Cape Town Partnership. “The City Partnership is a model of co-operation between the public and private sectors,” said Jeremy Wiley, president of the chamber, in a statement. “It shows what can be achieved by working together.” The Partnership and the CCID have spent 10 years developing and revitalising the city centre. P r i d e o f C h r i s te l H o u s e Fencers get to the point for championships The clang of metal rattles in the background as the buzzer signifies the winners and losers on the fencing piste, but the team coached by Christel House teacher Randall Daniels are already winners just by donning their fencing kit, writes JOHN ADAMS South Africa is not strong in fencing by world standards, says the 2008 South African Olympic fencing coach, Randall Daniels, who now spends his time teaching pupils at Christel House, in Ottery, and coaching the school’s fencing team. “The product and pride of bringing fencing to these children is that we are able to give them a chance.” Daniels grew up in Athlone during the early 70s and was introduced to fencing while walking home one day and seeing a group of children “sword fighting.” As he looked into the practice area, he was approached by the club coach, Gwen Logan.“I was asked if I wanted to give it a try, and I really enjoyed it,” recalled Daniels. “Fencing started something that changed my whole life. I had to determine the path I was on, and I had to achieve education. “And I did because of the discipline I learned in fencing.” For the past three years , Daniels has dedicated his time to teaching the children at Christel House and now he has more than 20 fencers on his club team.

■ All for one...From left,Tarryn Lasker,Wanda Matshaya, Kristen Matthews, Sheena McNab will take part in the SA national championships, at the University of Cape Town, this weekend. Last year two of his fencers, Sandisiwe Dingane and Wanda Matshaya, were selected to represent South Africa against top international competition in Catalonia. However, Daniels does not measure success with wins and losses, but with how the sport changes the character of those who walked the same neighborhoods he did as a child.”If we

can involve our kids in sport, the chances of them going down the road of negativity like drugs or any other thing is lessened,” said Daniels. Continued on page 19 “Those who participate tend to stay in school and even carry on studying further.”

■ Old Mutual Academy’’s Keeno Shellar in action during a Mr Price fixture at Rocklands on Saturday.

Old Mutual Academy’s star under-19 defender signs for Super Sport United JOHN ADAMS

T

he Pinelands-based Old Mutual Academy’s Keeno Shellar could someday bring unprecented success to the national team. That is according to his high school soccer coach, Dawood Tregonning. Shellar has turned heads and denied opponents access to goal since he was a little boy. When he’s not turning out for the Academy’s under-19

squad, Sheller stars for Beacon Hill High, who are second on the Mr Price senior schools log.

Coaches who have had the opportunity to coach the young star have marvelled at his abilities, leadership and work ethic. “He is very quiet off the field, but on the field is a different person,” said Neil Pain, who coached him for the past three years in the Vodocom league. “When he talks, the other players listen because they know it is going to be beneficial. He is outstanding in class and

on the field. He is magnificent academically and is well-disciplined,” Tregonning added. Despite all the accolades, Shellar remains well-grounded and very close to his family. With the confidence and excitement of a new adventure knocking at his door, Keano is still listening to the instructions of his coaches and his parents’ advice. “He will just need the right

guidance. When youngsters leave Cape Town, especially to go to Johannesburg, they struggle because it is tough out there. But I think he could go all the way because on just football abilities, he has all the credentials, said Pain. The highest praise for Shellar came from coach Tregonning. “If we want to make Bafana Bafana a success, then they need Keeno on the team,” he said.

Mitchell’s Plain dragonboat racers shine at Youth Day paddling Regatta From page 24 Rocklands High School and the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum also took part in the Youth Day Regatta. The team from Ethel’s Place, a shelter from the destitute in Eastridge, won the novice section. “People race for many reasons but I think it is the discipline, the challenge, the team work and just being out on the water that keeps people doing it,” said Jacobs. “Since the first Youth day Regatta last year, more black youngsters are taking part in the sport,” said Jacobs. One student has been involved in racing for more than seven years now, and has moved from drummer boy to a club manager. Ismail Smit started in Grade 10 under the tutelage of Jacobs and now runs the Drachen Hari-yoshi club. “I began as a boy because I liked to socialise and communicate with groups. I didn't really like individual sports and this was an easy way for me to express myself. And I really enjoyed the racing aspect of the sport,” said Smit. “Take it from me, when you involve yourself in this sport you surround yourself with good people, positive people,” said Smit. “It is the individual's choice if they want to become a success or if they want to fail. I chose to go into dragonboat racing and be positive, and I brought my friends with me.” Smit attends False Bay College where he is studying boat building. He is designing a competitive dragonboat racing oar that can be produced in South Africa and sold throughout the world. Upon completion, the oar will be sent to the International Dragonboat Federation for approval for competition. There are more than 450 people involved in dragonboat racing in Cape Town with 12 participating club teams. Once a month, the clubs participate in a competition held down at the V&A Waterfront, and most teams practise once or twice a week to prepare. Each boat has 20 participants that make up its crew; 18 paddlers, one drummer facing the paddlers, usually the beginner or youngest on the team, and one sweep who stands at the rear of the boat and is in charge of guiding it and keeping it from harm.

“If you just want to watch or are thinking about getting involved, you can come to the V&A Waterfront on a Saturday morning and there are a host of dragon boaters there and we

will welcome you with open arms,” says Smit. ● For more information call Moegsien Jacobs on 078 368 7536 or Ismail Smit on 074 222 9885.

The ‘buzzzzz’of a million vuvuzelas is here to stay T

he buzz of the Confederations Cup is gently fading into the night and there are questions if the “buzz makers” will be present when the World Cup returns to South African soil in 2010. The vuvuzela, possibly originating from Zulu meaning “making noise” or from every other language meaning “death to your ears and sanity”, is a long plastic trumpet used in locally to create a buzz at soccer matches. The noise is often described as the sound of an elephant although many have described it as the sound of a swarm of bees. Nonetheless, the spirit horn is causing quite a stir among the international community, some even calling for its ban from the 2010 World Cup. FIFA has received thousands of calls from angry fans complaining that the sound of the vuvuzela is not only distracting when watching the matches on television but it also drowns out the commentators. Coaches and players have joined in with the disapproving fans and have voiced their displeasure. Dutch soccer coach, Bert Van Marwijk told reporters that the sound of the vuvuzela interferes with his ability to

coach his players on the field. Spanish midfielder, Xabi Alonso, added that the noise makes it nearly impossible to communicate between teammates on the pitch, and that it doesn’t add any atmosphere into the stadium. He also admitted that the noise makes it difficult to concentrate while playing. Some fans at the stadium who came to sit and enjoy a quiet afternoon or evening of soccer, complained that the decibel level of the vuvuzela causes permanent ear damage. They claim the damage is magnified when a die-hard Bafana Bafana fan, sitting directly behind them, blasts the vuvuzela right into their eardrum. The only concern FIFA has voiced over the vuvuzela came out of a meeting in 2008 in which they conditionally approved the noisemaker for the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup as long as they remain free from logos and advertisements and as long as “hooligans don’t use the vuvuzela as a weapon.” Entrepreneurs have pointed to the financial gains as the best reason to keep the instrument in the stadiums. Upon the FIFA’s announcement in 2008 allowing the vuvuzelas, there

Economists project more than 50 000 additional instruments will be sold during the World Cup next year. FIFA President Sepp Blatter remains in support of the vuvuzela as a traditional African sound, but many object to its African heritage claiming that the

instrument’s prototype was developed in America. However, South Africans are quick to point out that life began at the Cradle of Humanity located in Maropeng in Gauteng, and thus everything comes from Africa including the vuvuzela. No doubt, the debate will rage until the completion of the 2010 World Cup, and the opinions will

be as diverse as the countries participating in the most watched sporting event; but as for now, keep practising because the vuvuzela is here to stay. ● John Adams is a journalism intern from the University of Southern California who is currently working at Cape Community Newspapers, which publishes Sentinel and 13 other titles.

Suzuki’s quirky Swift will win lots of fans seats too have plenty of support. The instrument panel reflects Suzuki’s sporting genes: the rev counter is based on the design of the GSX-R superbike, with the zero mark at six o’clock – where your eye falls naturally. The trim quality is high and the centrally located dash-mounted display shows time, fuel consumption (which is switchable between instantaneous and average consumption) and outside temperature. In the GLS, the test car, the satellite controls for the audio system are on the leather trim steering wheel. Storage space is plentiful, there are useful binnacles for small, personal items, a compartment in the instrument panel, front and rear cup holders, large front door and seatback pockets, as well as an oddments tray under the front passenger seat. The Swift is powered by a perky 1.5-litre four-cylinder multi-point fuelinjected engine employing variable valve timing (VVT) and because it weighs just 980kg it can go from 0 to 100km/h in 10 sec, Suzuki said. The engine is fully Euro 4 emissions standard compliant, with a CO2 emissions rating of 151 g/km for the manual version. The GLS is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox (a four-speed automatic is available) that even me, an automatic man, found sharp and slick. Steering is light and responsive, the ride is good but if you push it round the curves, watch for the under-steer. It is also surprisingly quiet. Suzuki says the Swift has a top speed of 175km/h. I didn’t put it to the test but at times on my usual route, which does include some deserted stretches of road, the needle hovered around the 150 mark and the Swift held the line well. It has a 43-litre tank and in a combined cycle uses just over 6litres/100km, Suzuki said. But my figures were nearer the 7litres /100km mark. However, if you have a light foot the tank could take

you a bit more than 600 kilometres. The GL is the entry level model, though also with a high spec level. The GLS boasts a CD and MP3-compatible CD tuner, front fog lamps, side and curtain airbags, in addition to the dual front airbags. Other safety features include ABS brakes with both electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assist. A factory-fitted alarm/immobiliser is part of the standard specification on all models, as is central locking operated by a remote control that boasts hazard lamp confirmation as well as a panic function and tamper-resistant door locks. The Swift is a good all-rounder with no airs or graces. It’s fun to drive and its quirky character will win a lot of fans.

and a three-year roadside assistance package with medical rescue services. ● Prices correct at the time of going to press.
