Hi everyone, my name is Isabella Salazar and I am the author and creator of this zine, The Tender Truth. I am currently a sophomore at Carlmont High School and have always had a love for chicken tenders and nuggets. They were always a staple meal for my brother and I. It was what we would always order as little kids ordering off the kids menu. I hope that everyone readign this will have a similar mindset about this nostalgic dish.

Nuggets vs. Tenders:

Many of us think of chicken tenders and chicken nuggets to be synonymous but the truth is that they aren’t. Some people who do think there is a difference always think of the wrong characteristic. Many think it might have to do with the texture but in reality it’s actually the shape. The shape of chicken nuggets is rounder, shorter and is typically more socailly acceptable to eat with your hands. They are also more likely to be sold at a store while tenders are more served at resturants. Tenders are much more slender and most resturants will serve it to you with a fork and knife.

On the right there is a photo of chicken tenders. Notice the difference? These are slender and have a section of breading at the tips of each piece.

On the left is a photo of chicken nuggets and you are able to see that these are much more stubby and more of a uniform shape

Tender Talks:

I was able to talk to a few others who also shared a love for friend chicken goodness. Ethan was one of the people I interviewed and he says he prefers chicken tenders because, “they tend to have a crispier coating which pairs well for [his] love of ketchup becuase it compliments its smoothness“. I also asked if he had any other chicken prefrences and he made it clear that his all time favorite was chicken wings. I also talked to Ryan and he disagreed with Ethan and said, “chicken nuggets are the best because they’re the perfect bite-size“. He says that it’s important to only eat them with Chick-fil-a sauce because “it’s just so perfect“. While Ethan and Ryan disagree on a few things they can both agree that chicken wings are the best.

I’m sure many of us remeber the distinct and colorful menus waiters would hand out to us as kids. We would take the crayons, circle the food we wanted and hand it to our parents so they would order for us. The brave ones would take their sheet and read it to the waiter with the confidence and cuteness they had. Waiters would smile and take our menus.

Sometimes we had these meals and weren’t at a resturants Sometimes our parents would make it and other times we would get a quick meal from some fast food chain. Either way the crispy outside was always an appeal to kids around the country. It has such a simple taste that every kid has had it. In every form (chicken tenders, nuggets, dinosaur nuggets). The options of sauces and spices were limitless.

Often times, the chicken tenders you get vary in crunchiness. Some may be softer and some may be softer while some may be crunchier. This is because the breading on these are different. Heres the difference with just a few of them.
