Identity?

How is it possible to take one word and expand its numerous possibilities to define a single person’s characteristics and combine it with contemporary fashion. After many exploratory concepts I identified that throughout most situations that are unfolding around me, I remain shy especially in large groups, I usually find myself mingling at the back of the crowd, attempting to stay hidden. Apply the word shy to fashion and it led me to the possibilities of how individuals use fashion to remain hidden, the obvious being the “hoodie”, most notably the hood and differing styles. Some of the features throughout my collection, are of am individuals face. For the shy individual, often they remain hidden and are simply an unrememberable face in the crowd, however they are often the most observant in any given situation and will notice small details.

This project Is a fusion of classic and future. Little black dress is one such thing that has survived innumerable fashion fads, trends and become timeless classic in fashion world. This collection has a glimpse of regency, Victorian, gothic influences as well as the charm and elegance of little black dress collaborative with new technology as 3D printing, LED lighting and laser cutting. Bringing back the allure of old fashion era with the perk of technological innovation is the purpose of this amalgamation.

The inspir ation for this collection is based upon the situation that is currently taking place in Europe. Armed conflict means not only the destruction of buildings, but additionally the pain and suffering of people living in terror-stricken territories leading to emigration. A deeper understanding of conflict would mean and exploration that extends to the effects and consequences it has on a particular country and neighbouring countries, which is felt by ordinary citizens.

One of such effects of war, which is currently affecting Europe, is inflation and rising prices, especially with regards to the cost of energy and gas. People are no longer able to pay their bills, which is reflected in the standard of living, which in turn is drastically decreasing.

The main motto of my collection is the idiom, “Tighten your belt”, which means that you are forced to temporarily reduce your expenses, reduce your current standard of living. For me, the straps and rope are a symbol of the crisis that Europe is facing. Also, the colours I chose for this collection are not accidental because red reflects courage, independence, and love but also means fire. Green is a symbol of hope, harmony, freedom and happiness and prosperity. Black, the colour of sadness, pink, symbolises a transformation and delicacy.

Throughout my collection, materials belonging to two different price ranges will be used, including jute rope which symbolises the constraints of living and luxurious lace. All the elements reflect the crisis in Europe, but by combining them something unique is created. Seeing bad things in life from a different perspective makes you feel better.
