SLIDING ROCK Indulge in nature’s very own waterslide in Brevard, NC — a place where rushing water and a smooth slab of river rock come together in perfect harmony. Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest is a 60 foot natural rock slide with an 8 foot deep pool at the base — perfect for folks looking for a fun waterfall to slide down! The slide is a Forest Service recreation area with lifeguards and staff on duty from late May 27th through September 4th from 10am - 6pm, but visitors may slide any time during daylight hours. With a low fee of $2 per person when staff members are on duty and free during “off” hours (restrooms will be closed and donations are still encouraged even when admission is waived), it’s affordable and will foster memories that last a lifetime! Children 6 and under may slide for free. The warm weather does bring the crowds, but you’ll have fun waiting your turn as you watch each slider’s expression as they go down! There are also two observation areas for those who would rather watch the excitement. Located along US 276, about 7.5 miles south of the Blue Ridge Parkway (or a little over 7 miles north off US 280 in Brevard). Parking is somewhat limited, so if you can, try and arrive early in the day. For more info, call the US Forest Service at 828-877-3265. Photo via Transylvania County Tourism 6

BLUE RIDGE ESCARPMENT The Blue Ridge Escarpment, aptly called the Blue Wall by the Cherokee Indians, is a unique segment of the Blue Ridge Mountains that rises dramatically from rolling hills to nearly 4,000 feet above sea level. Spanning three states (North Carolina, South Carolina & Georgia) and encompassing 859,000 acres, the Southern Blue Ridge Escarpment contains some of the greatest natural diversity of rare plants and animals found anywhere in the world. The Escarpment is home to more than 300 rare species and natural communities and features more waterfalls than anywhere else in the East. Moist air traveling inland from the Gulf of Mexico gives the region the highest rainfall east of the Pacific Cascades, making it a refuge for ferns, mosses and other moisture-loving species. Table Rock Mountain is one good place to take in the views. The 11,000-acre Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area encompasses the escarpment, as well as Jones Gap and Caesars Head state parks. Hardwood forests, mountain streams, lakes and diverse animal and plant habitats number among its treasures. 18

PARIS MOUNTAIN STATE PARK Located just north of Greenville, Paris Mountain State Park is a wilderness gem of over 1700 acres. Paris Mountain State Park is one of 16 South Carolina parks that were built in the 1930s by the Depression era Civilian Conservation Corps. GHS SWAMP RABBIT TRAIL The Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 21-mile multi-use greenway connecting Travelers Rest with Greenville and beyond. The Swamp Rabbit Trail traverses along the Reedy River, an old railroad corridor, and several city parks making for a fun and safe place to walk, bicycle, birdwatch, and explore nature as well as browse through the many local businesses just off the trail from Travelers Rest to Greenville. The rails-to-trail Swamp Rabbit idea was born in 1999 when Greenville County bought 13 miles of abandoned railroad track for the trail for $1.3 million. The trail got its quirky name from the defunct G&NR train, locally called the Swamp Rabbit. It is believed the name came from the wetlands along the Reedy River that the line traversed and the bouncy nature of the ride. The greenway officially opened for public use in May of 2009. This flat, traffic-free trail is perfect for a family bike ride and visitors can rent bicycles at either end of the trail. If you cannot reach the trail by bicycle, there are many spots to park vehicles along the way as well as Greenlink bus stops. All Greenlink buses are equipped with bicycle racks. For interactive maps and to find out what’s “hoppening” along the trail, visit greenvillerec.com/swamprabbit.

WALHALLA STATE FISH HATCHERY Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Walhalla State Fish Hatchery is the only trout hatchery in South Carolina. The Walhalla State Fish Hatchery is unique in that it is the only state hatchery involved in the culture of trout, a coldwater species. Trout are produced here in support of recreational fishing. When they reach an appropriate size, the trout are stocked wherever suitable coldwater habitat occurs in South Carolina. The streams of the Appalachian Mountains are generally pristine and of good water quality. However, they are frequently not very fertile and are not as productive as streams in other areas of the country. This is due to the type of bedrock from where they originate which produces low alkalinity in the water. Therefore, streams in South Carolina do not typically support high fish populations on their own. This fact, combined with heavy fishing pressure, creates the need for supplemental stocking with trout from the hatchery to sustain a viable fishery. In a typical year, the Hatchery produces approximately 500,000 trout for stocking the public waters of South Carolina. They also provide 26

Summertime GUIDE 05.23.17

eggs and small fingerlings to other State agencies. Visitors are welcome to tour the hatchery, to fish in the East Fork which runs through hatchery grounds, or to picnic in areas provided for the public. Special group tours can be arranged. Visits by individuals and families are generally on a walk-through basis. Adjacent to the hatchery is the Chattooga Picnic Area which offers a barrier-free fishing pier and access to the hiking trails of the Ellicott Rock Wilderness. Hikers may take a trail that goes along side the East Fork for 2.5 miles to the main Chattooga River. From there you can go upstream to Ellicott’s Rock (1.7 miles) or downstream to the Burrell’s Ford campground and parking lot (2.1 miles). To get to the hatchery from Walhalla, take SC 28 N to SC 107. Continue on SC 107 approximately 13 miles. Look for the Walhalla Hatchery sign and turn left on the Hatchery road. The Hatchery is approximately 1.8 miles at the end of the road. RIVER ARTS DISTRICT Above: Painting by Jeff Pittman (jeffpittman.com), via riverartsdistrict.com

The River Arts District consists of a vast array of artists and working studios spread out along the French Broad River. This eclectic area presents an exciting spectrum of artistic and cultural creativity. Plan on spending a day or more visiting artists working in their studios, grabbing a bite of local cuisine or beer and taking time to find art that’s perfect for your world. The RAD district is made up of local artists who open their studios to visitors and the public throughout the year. The studios, all in revitalized old factories and warehouses, hold classes, special demonstrations, events, and their very successful Studio Strolls for

visitors and locals alike. It’s like being in an outdoor gallery, where you can shop and observe countless artists at work in their comfort zone. With over 200 artists, you can find fiber art, textiles, jewelry, paintings, pottery, sculptures, photography, and more as you stroll through the district. There are no official “Open Hours”, but at any given time throughout the year, you will find a plethora of open studios and galleries. For directions and Studio Guide, go to riverartsdistrict.com

LAUNCH Trampoline Park Encouraging Family Wellness Through Entertaining Fitness Childhood friends. School friends. Neighborhood friends.College friends. Work friends. Best friends. Boyfriends. Girlfriends. We work our entire lives building friendships, surrounding ourselves with friends that “just get us.” Ten years ago Kristie Bivins & Jennifer Pacheco started a friendship while living in the same neighborhood. It was a busy time with small children but they talked in the neighborhood streets & chatted about life as the kids played. They never imagined one day being in business together. As friends & moms they desired a place to go with their children that was fun for all ages. Two years ago Ryan (Kristie’s husband) presented Kristie & Jennifer with the idea of opening a trampoline park. A family entertainment business that families of all ages could enjoy together. That’s when the idea of LAUNCH TRAMPOLINE PARK-Asheville was first born. One piece at a time they watched as concrete was poured, framing was put up, flooring put down, signs hung & finally trampolines strapped into place. Kristie & Jennifer love to watch families & friends at LAUNCH Trampoline Park laughing, smiling, and celebrating life with excitement. Rick & his 2008 Harley Davidson Electraglide Classic

Who’s Ready to Ride? by RICK JENKINS, IWANNA Sales Manager

I AM! Actually I ride year round. I enjoy it. Not a care in the world, wind in my face, bugs in my teeth, and my stereo blasting. I have owned a Harley Davidson for 45 years. To me, there is no other brand of motorcycle to ride. It is my slice of Americana. But to all the other motorcycle enthusiasts out there, whatever your pick of bikes are to get you down the highway, we all long for the hot days of summer, and the great riding in our beautiful mountains and the upstate. I was spending time the other day with Steve Brown, riding enthusiast and owner of Blue Ridge Riders on Tunnel Road, and he asked a great question. “What was the main reason for you choosing your Electraglide Classic?” I thought a minute and gave 3 answers, “I have owned one in the past. Elvis Presley owned 17 of them, if it’s good enough for the King, it’s good enough for me. And I love the color of my bike - Pacific Blue & Black.” He smiled at my answers and replied, “Although you had your reasons, I think there are 10 things to consider before you make your motorcycle purchase. Things that give you real peace of mind when you hop on and go for that long trip on a hot summer day. When you purchased your motorcycle did you consider: 52

Summertime GUIDE 05.23.17

1. How many owners has this bike had? 2. Is the mileage accurate on the odometer? 3. Does the bike have a “clean title” or is it a “salvage title” or are there any negative brands on the title? 4. Have any on-staff mechanics serviced and inspected the bike? 5. Where did this bike come from? 6. How much tread is left on the tires? 7. What has been serviced or replaced? (Ex: oil, oil filter, air filter, brakes, brake fluid, tires) 8. Is there any existing warranty? If not, can I purchase one? 9. What, if any, accessories come with the bike? 10. Will this dealer charge any additional fees such as document fees, prep charges or delivery/destination fees in addition to the negotiated price? I thought, “Hmmmm... these are good, logical questions that could really have saved me money short term AND long term. So in short, on my next purchase, cause this ain’t my last Harley, I will consider these 10 things and worry less about the color. I wish everyone good riding, and as the Sergeant on Hill Street Blues always said, “And for God sake... be safe out there!” IWANNA.COM
