rwin won its first nine varsity football games for the first time ever, in 2014, behind Coach Mike Sexton and thensophomore Damien Ferguson (6-0, 165 jr.) behind center. The all-WAC QB passed for nearly 2,600 yards (second most among WNC returnees) and a three-toone ratio of 24 touchdowns (also second most in WNC) versus eight interceptions. He topped 250 passing yards in three clashes with fellow Mountain Athletic Conference powers Asheville High and Reynolds. He

ran for five more scores, and 310 yards (3.8 ypc.). Ferguson is now stronger and faster. Sexton also sees even greater arm strength and accuracy, to go with good balance and passing release. “He’s made strides, also in decision-making skills. He’s very poised.” Ferguson is the latest star Erwin QB. Robbie Nallenweg was QB in Sexton’s first year in Leicester, 2008. Then came the Browns — Garrett for two years, then Austin for three seasons and 7,779 career passing yards.
He came within 116 yards of Tuscola alum Tyler Brosius’ WNC top mark. The Warriors have six winning seasons in a row, under Sexton. Erwin won a MAC 3-A title for the first time in a dozen years, in 2012. They shined again in ’14, with many new starters. Now they return seven starters on defense, six on offense. WR Chase Austin (6-2, 195 sr.) is a returning go-to receiver. He caught 51 passes for 807 yards (15.8 ypc.) and seven TDs in 2014. “He has great (4.4) speed,” Sexton said. “He’s strong
