Letter from the President

Dear Friends,

During the 2010-2011 school year, we celebrated the 140th anniversary of the presence of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament in Corpus Christi, Texas as well as the founding of our school. So many years later, the Sisters’ dedication, presence, and partnership with the clergy and lay faithful serve as a leaven throughout the Diocese and school community. While this has been a year of celebration and unparalleled achievement for our students, we are conscious of rapid changes in education and in the new educational “normal” that challenges our students. Young people must be ready academically, socially, and emotionally to handle the educational expectations of the future while, at the same time, honoring the timeless traditions of both home life and faith life that provide a solid foundation not just for school but for life. This type of educational excellence is a communal project and a communal investment. As you page through this annual report of philanthropy and the school’s financial report, we hope you will be inspired by the number of foundations and individuals who believe in the mission of our school to invest in its future, providing a viable Incarnate Word Academy for many years to come. Thank you to all. As we embrace the challenge to understand the dramatic changes in primary and secondary education, the need for a global understanding of community and solidarity, the responsibility of responding to the needs of others, and the role of faith in life and eternity, we hope that you will continue your support or perhaps be inspired for the first time to support our school’s annual giving program. With regard to the school’s finances, we are continuing to develop strategies for innovative cost controls and efficiencies that allow us to continue to be mission-driven and that provide resources to reinvest in the school’s academic programs and facility needs. Evidenced by reducing the cost of printing and mailing for publications such as this annual report; Angel News, our school newsletter; and various other administrative expense reallocations, we recognize the need for even greater stewardship at a time when economic security is a source of anxiety for many. With regard to facilities and their impact on the school’s academic programs, in August we opened the Elementary Library Media Resource Center adjacent to the existing library. This center will allow for the full orchestration of the Angel eBrary, the school’s virtual library resource platform, aligned with the program that is already in place for the middle school and high school. Also in August, we inaugurated the High School College and Career Guidance Center and Dual Credit Lab. This innovative facility renovation will allow students to continue to earn college credit through the school’s dual credit program with Del Mar College as we provide a center for students and parents to enhance the quality of the college and career guidance offered by the Academy. Both of these renovations are being made possible through the partnership of an anonymous foundation and are examples of the level of communal investment for which our students are the beneficiaries. In addition to Incarnate Word Academy’s annual report and financial statements, you will find the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation list of donors, provided by the Foundation Trustees. While tuition and fees comprised approximately eighty percent of our operational revenue in 2010-2011, the IWA Foundation contributed over $640,000.00 in operational support for financial assistance and scholarships. This level of commitment by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word must not go unnoticed as it provides for a more affordable Incarnate Word Academy for all students. Certainly, there remains much to do now and in the future to advance the mission of Incarnate Word Academy. And while surely there are challenges that lie ahead, it is our responsibility – as partners in the mission of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word—to meet these challenges for the continued benefit of our students. Over these many years there have been countless reasons to pause and give thanks to God for the immeasurable blessings received and made possible by the presence of Incarnate Word Academy. Acknowledging the certainty of God’s continued goodness through the eyes of faith, we look ahead to the future. By working together I am confident that we will continue to build on the accomplishments of the past, embracing the future with audacity and hope. Praised be the Incarnate Word! Sincerely,

Charles D. Imbergamo

Letter from the School Board Chair

President

Dear Friends,

Reflecting on my experience as the 2010-2011 Chair of the IWA School Board, I realize that the history of Incarnate Word Academy has been written by students, parents, faculty, staff and Sisters. It has been a unique experience to have served next to those, who long ago, educated me along with the dedicated men and women who share their knowledge and expertise in promoting the mission of Incarnate Word Academy. This year’s School Board of Directors were: Patricia Bell, Brent Bottom, Sr. Colette Brehony, Tom Carlisle, Barry Clark, Joe Coco, Sr. Juliane Kuntscher, Sr. Michelle Marie Kuntscher, Dr. Paxton Longwell, Rod Martin, Ralph Meyer, Frances Mir, Kim Seger and Dave Thomas. The transition to a lay president went smoothly with effective communication and interaction among administration, staff and board. Together we collaborated in maintaining a balanced budget, promoting campus growth, and supporting quality faith formation. I am grateful for the Catholic education I received and proud that my parents chose and sacrificed to provide this education for me. The opportunity helped to form the man, husband, father, businessman and Catholic I am today. This educational experience has been an aid in the formation of every thought, decision and action of my daily life. These are the returns of the investment in a Catholic education. I am proud to have played a part in the history of IWA as Chair of the School Board for the 2010-2011 term during the 140th Anniversary of the school. I pray that future historians will reflect with pride and thanksgiving on this year’s accomplishments and view them as a part of the foundation for future growth and opportunities at Incarnate Word Academy. Sincerely,

Living Stones Building the Mission Recognition Society In gratitude for and recognition of loyal and generous major donors who have contributed significant financial support for the advancement of the school’s mission, IWA has established the Incarnate Word Academy Recognition Society, Living Stones Building the Mission. Based on the scripture from 1 Peter 2:5 “Like living stones let ourselves be built into a spiritual house,” the society, through its annual induction ceremony, acknowledges those who have contributed cumulative gifts of $50,000 or more or who have remembered IWA in a bequest.

Annual Giving Program 2010-2011

Incarnate Word Academy’s mission statement reiterates our commitment to educating the whole child, not only academically, but also socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically. The ability to provide our unique combination of superior academics and spiritual development is enhanced through the strong support we receive from our many parents, alumni, grandparents, past parents, and friends. Your financial gifts are an indication of solidarity in the Incarnate Word Academy community. It indicates to potential families, foundations, corporations, and friends of the school that those most closely connected to IWA are committed to our present and future well-being.

Connie F. Cadena Executive Director of Advancement

Annual Fund

Special Gifts

Incarnate Word Academy’s Annual Fund is the basis of our comprehensive advancement program and provides unrestricted gifts to support the highest current priorities of the school. These gifts directly support our students, faculty, and educational program. Gifts to the 2010-2011 Annual Fund helped us to: l Provide valuable tuition assistance to qualifying students l Continue to enhance the educational program with: • Completion of SmartBoard acquisition at all levels • Creation of Elementary Level Library Media Resource Center • Establishment of College and Career Guidance Center and Dual Credit Lab at the High School • Enhancement of technology with purchase of additional document cameras • End-of-year bonuses for faculty and staff

While unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund provide the greatest flexibility to allow us to continue to adapt to changing and unforeseen needs, there are also areas of specific need. Gifts, including matching gifts to special programs or projects provide an opportunity for our benefactors to perpetuate the values and interests they hold dear. This year, the following programs have been supported: l Athletics Program l Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium Program l Music Department l Missions Program l Science Department l Charitable Schools Program (Service Projects) l Middle Level History Trip l Student Meals

Incarnate Word Academy Foundation Precious Stones Supporting the Mission Scholarship Recognition Society The IWA Scholarship Program began in 1978. Since its inception, approximately 695 students have been awarded scholarships, 58 of whom were scholarship recipients during the 2010-2011 school year. Scholarships are a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of others and help keep IWA accessible to as many students as possible. A permanent scholarship is established with a minimum gift of $10,000 as an endowed fund within the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation. The principal of the fund is invested and a portion of the earned interest is distributed to qualifying students, preserving the principal to generate future awards. In gratitude for the significant contributions of scholarship funds, the Precious Stones Supporting the Mission Scholarship Recognition Society was created. This recognition society acknowledges donors whose lifetime giving to the scholarship program totals $10,000 or more. An induction ceremony takes place during the Annual Scholarship Donor Appreciation Luncheon.
