Zetech University Celebrates Appointment of New Vice Chancellor

he Zetech University fraternity celebrated a milestone this April when the institution welcomed Professor Njenga Munene as the new Vice Chancellor. Appointed by the Zetech University Council, Prof.

Njenga Munene took over from former VC Prof. Edwin Wamukoya who served the institution for six years, overseeing its transition to University status.

Prof. Munene joined the institution from Egerton University where he served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration and Finance. A distinguished strategist, he also served as Chairman of various committees at the varsity and was a member of the Egerton University Management Board.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr. Mohammed Hassan, Chairman, Zetech University Council noted that the timely step is geared towards growing the university’s status and provision of quality education, “It is a great time to welcome a scholar of Prof Munene’s stature, a leader capable of steering Zetech University to greater heights. We are privileged to have him join us and we look forward to benefitting from his rich experience in higher education.”

Mr. Mohammed noted.

A highly regarded scholar, Prof. Munene has a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Studies from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Science in Clinical Studies and a Bachelor of Veterinary Studies from the same University. He also pursued Advanced Studies in Protozoan Diseases at the Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (Japan).

Speaking during his unveiling ceremony at the University main campus, Prof. Munene stated that he aims to promote academic excellence, expand research investment and expertise as well as enhance service delivery during his tenure at Zetech. The Professor of Clinical Veterinary Medicine added that he is enthusi-

astic about working with a vibrant faculty and administrative team to enhance the students’ experience, “It is indeed an honour and privilege to join Zetech University and work with a team eager to reshape the provision of higher education in Kenya. In line with the Varsity’s five year strategic plan, my work will largely involve steering the team in: amplifying the capacity of our faculty, growing our student population, development of infrastructure and increasing our programme offerings, to meet the growing need for quality education in the country.”

Prof Munene said. He added that these engagements are critical in the University’s journey towards attaining a University Charter.

The Professor, who is a registered veterinary surgeon and a member of the Kenya Veterinary Association and the Kenya National Academy of Sciences, is widely travelled and published in refereed journals, with several University awards to his credit.

Indeed, the institution’s fraternity is proud to work with the distinguished and inspirational Professor whose experience will be of great impact to the university as a whole.

n elated Professor sits comfortably in his new office, reflecting on the role a Vice Chancellor plays in impacting the lives of thousands of students seeking quality university education. This is the position we find Prof. Njenga Munene when we visit his office for a one on one on his plans for the university and what he expects from the Zetech student fraternity. A warm smile welcomes us to his office and a firm handshake tells us that he means business.

Once we settle and invite him to speak about his plans, the seasoned academician starts by affirming that quality education is at the heart of Zetech University. According to Prof.

Munene, students should not lose sight of what brought them to Zetech, which is studying. He notes that the learning process at institutions of higher learning is designed to encourage students to pursue excellence in academics, and thereafter, complement this knowledge by participating in leadership, networking and co-curricular forums, “A student’s primary reason for joining University is to study. Other aspects such as building healthy relationships and engaging in holistic life skills engagements, serve to enhance their experience and better prepare them for the world.”

The visionary leader who wants to make Zetech the most attractive brand in education adds that the institution’s core values are sufficient to transform learners into capable and efficient employees, managers and entrepreneurs if they remain focused and committed to their work, “The University’s core values, which include integrity, customer focus and team work, are structured to empower students to effectively serve in different markets across the world.

Once such values are infused successfully, success is inevitable.” Prof. said. He further makes reference to innovation as a key ingredient for success, “Innovation is simply doing things in a different way; it is not necessarily coming up with something that doesn’t exist but rather, making an extra ordinary thing out of an ordinary situation.”

Assuring learners of the commitment by the University Council, Management, Faculty and administration teams, the avid academician also promised to enhance the provision of academic, social, and psychological support to ensure trainees enjoy a balanced and fulfilling Zetech University experience.

Passionate about the Environment

Prof. Munene also called on students and the larger Zetech community to take good care of their environment, reminding them to efficiently utilise the facilities availed to them.

Passionate about environmental conservation, he added that, “A favourable learning environment is important for students to enjoy learning and it is our responsibility as the Zetech family to mind our environs.” He further expressed the Varsity’s commitment to take part in environmental and education driven community service.

Towards the close of the interview, Prof.

Munene touched on the Varsity’s investment in talent and development programmes, especially in the area of sports, arts and culture, lauding the sports and drama teams for performing excellently in national competitions, “Talent development is important and is also an integral part of the campus experience. We have structures in place to support our gifted students and provide for them platforms to gain exposure, while enforcing the policy of balancing academics and extracurricular commitments.” said Prof.

The legacy-driven professor concluded by sharing that his key objective is to leave Zetech University a different and influential place for learners, staff and the country at large. Prof.

Munene aspires to leave the university chartered, with an increase in student numbers and most importantly having created a specific niche’ that Zetech University identifies itself with. “I want everyone in the world to know Zetech University and what it stands for; a place where students from all walks of life invent their future.” he said. The Father of four closed with an invitation to students to engage with him at his office, located on the third floor of the University’s Thika Road Campus.

undreds of inmates and prison officers celebrated a milestone this past April when they graduated with fundamental skills in Information Technology through an education programme run

by Zetech University and the Kenya Prisons Service.

The excitement was palpable at the colourful graduation ceremony held at the Nairobi Remand and Allocation Maximum security prison as a total of 123 graduates from five prisons in the country were awarded certificates by the University Vice Chancellor and the Kenya Prisons Service leadership.

The initiative, which has made huge impact and seen over 600 inmates benefit from the programme, saw 106 inmates and 17 staff members from the Kamiti Maximum, Nairobi West, Kamae Borstal, Langata Women Maximum and the Nairobi Remand and Allocation Security prisons form the graduating class of 2017 after successfully undertaking the training.

Speaking at the graduation, Zetech University Vice Chancellor Prof. John Njenga Munene noted that access to quality education is a fundamental right for all in the society and a significant contributor to the rehabilitation process, “Today’s ceremony demonstrates the increasing demand for higher education by Kenyans, includ-

ing our brothers and sisters in correctional centres. Indeed, intellectual endeavor is not a preserve of the rich, the free, but of all citizens, including the less fortunate, marginalised and those in prisons,” he said, adding, “At Zetech, we believe in the future of this country and trust that the beneficiaries will use skills gained to contribute to the development of the country.”

He further noted that given the notable success of the programme, the University is keen on introducing progressive courses to enable beneficiaries to study other courses relevant for different markets.

Representing the Kenya Prisons Service, Nairobi Deputy Regional Com-

mander of Prisons Madam Olivia Obell observed that the initiative has greatly impacted the lives of inmates and staff because of the practicability of the course, “We appreciate the commitment shown by Zetech University in ensuring our community is well trained in matters education.

The training in IT serves to adequately equip a significant population of learners with skills that are useful for any professional setting and we are eager to see the institution offer courses in Diploma and even Degree levels.” she said.

Corporal David Onjera who has benefited from the programme and now tutors other trainees shared that the training is transformational and has enabled officers to work more efficiently, “The course has upgraded our skills and enabled us to work more efficiently. It has truly had a positive impact on the prison community as a whole.” Said Corporal David.

On his part, an excited Boniface Omuhunya appreciated the University and Prisons administration for the opportunity he believes has empowered him and his fellow inmates to learn and understand concepts in IT.

Celebrating Innovation: Computer Engineering Student Invents Intelligent Cane for the Visually Impaired

A

nthony Muthungu is not your average student. At the age of 25; he has over fifteen innovation accolades in his name among them 1st prize Aspiring Inter-Varsity Innovator Award 2018 as well as 2018 finalist of American Society for Mechanical Engineering Innovation Showcase.

The Social innovator, who is a Computer Engineering student at Zetech University, is passionate about using technology to transform lives and believes he was created to make a difference in the world.

His latest innovation is an invention he aptly names the “Intelligent Smart Cane”, an electronic walking cane that assists the

low vision impaired and the blind to walk freely, protecting them from colliding with objects.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report titled “Facts on Blindness and Visual Impairment Report” published in October 2017 on its website, the organization said an estimated 253 million people live with vision impairment, 36 million are blind and 217 million have moderate to severe vision impairment.

The report further said 81 per cent of people who are blind or have moderate or severe vision impairment are aged 50 years and above.

“Research is in my blood. I started doing small innovations back in 2006 when

I created electric power from bio-gas of a pit latrine in standard seven. Since then, I have been coming up with innovations that can address the needs of today’s world.” says Anthony, who has also been nominated for the 2018 Advancing Healthcare Innovations Africa (AHIA) workshop in South Africa.

Commercialising an innovation and getting it known is a big challenge most innovators face. Muthungu has been getting the support to fund his innovation from Zetech University; the varsity has been offering grants to his latest innovation to help him market it to institutions and non-governmental organisations.

The Smart cane uses five voltage power to run the control unit which is connected to the number of sensors that detect obstacles for the low vision impaired. Once the object is detected at a distance, a message is passed to the user through a set of earphones describing the object and the distance between the user and the object.

Anthony notes that the audio message is accompanied by a set of vibrations in the grip with each vibration giving its meaning using a universal language called ‘Anthony’s universal language for the blind.’ ‘’The innovation can effectively be used by the low vision impaired and blind people to boost the safety of their movement and reduce cases of dependability and misdirection,” explains Muthungu.

“Zetech has been very supportive since my admission to date. They have been giving me grants for research and exhibition purposes” says the innovator who is also an incubatee at Kenya ICT Authority. Already, Mr. Muthungu has other innovations under his name including a smart flooding system that would alert the residents about the nature of the rains and the floods. His other innovation is a GSM water level monitor that can give exact volume of water in the storage tanks through a short message alert instead of using manual ways to detect water level.

He adds that another merit of this innovation is that it detects both static and moving objects, facilitates easier communication in case of emergency as it has an emergency alert button. “The intelligent cane also provides direction and location information since it is linked to GSM and GPRS and enables the users to move with the same ease and confidence as sighted people.’’ he said

Library Department Educates Students on Information Literacy

etech University students benefitted from an interactive and insightful Information Literacy Day in the second quarter of the year, an event designed to enhance lifelong learning in the university fraternity.

Information literacy is a knowledge-based skill that university students and staff require for competitive teaching and learning processes; it involves recognising when information is needed and the ability to efficiently locate, accurately evaluate, effectively use, and interact with information in various formats, to accomplish a specific purpose.

During the two day event, students and staff were engaged on efficient use of the library and key aspects including use of electronic resources such as E-Books, E-Journals, online past papers, information searching and retrieval as well as reference systems.

Commenting on the exercise, Zetech University Registrar Academics Moses Maina highlighted the significance of capacity building at the institution, “Such initiatives task our students and faculty to make full use of the library as a key partner in their education journey,” Moses said, adding that, “Information literacy is an important

tool for academic success and professional development.”

DVC, Academics, Research and Extension Dr. Alice Njuguna, on her part, praised the library team for a fruitful exercise, noting that information literacy is a crucial skill in the pursuit of knowledge, “At Zetech, we focus on empowering learners in all aspects of their academic journey to ensure they are effectively equipped to excel.”

She said.

Themed “Redefining Literacy for Information Society”, the initiative saw student knowledge ambassadors train their fellow students in the skill, and educated them on this important tool for learning.

Through the initiative, this team of students will undergo regular training as well as enjoy opportunities to interact with other ambassadors from different universities

across the country.

Appreciating the management, facilitators and participants of the event, University Librarian Moses Kijugu, said, “We appreciate the opportunity to educate students and staff on information literacy and we believe the insights will empower users to apply information literacy in growing their academic and professional lives.” Moses shared.

Learning Begins for Government Sponsored Students

etech University admitted government sponsored students placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), in the recent placement of 2017 KCSE candidates and those from previous years who successfully applied for placement in public and private universities under Government sponsorship.

This year, Cabinet Secretary for Education Ms. Amina Mohammed noted that of the 69,151 candidates who scored C+ and above, the minimum mean grade required to join university, 62,851 were successfully placed to pursue degree courses of their choice.

The University received students from all Counties covering Rift Valley, Nyanza, Western, Eastern and Coastal regions as well as candidates from North Eastern; this ensures parity in the institution and promotes national cohesion and coexistence within the school. Moreover, it aligns with the Varsity’s intention to admit students from dynamic backgrounds and different countries, to create a diverse and rewarding learning environment.

Commenting on the development, the Varsity’s new Vice Chancellor Prof.

Njenga Munene appreciated the government for the continued efforts to enhance varsity education, adding that the new learners have settled well, “We are excited to welcome our newest students. Zetech University gives trainees

an edge in the market through provision of a unique and fulfilling experience that challenges learners to think critically and create solutions that can change the world.” Prof. Munene said, adding, “We laud the Government and KUCCPS for the continued efforts in supporting the education sector through such programmes that benefit students and the institutions.”

The students were treated to a memorable orientation session to prepare them for campus life and give them an opportunity to interact with students, Faculty and the management team.

This year, the number of placed students across the Country dropped in comparison with numbers recorded in previous years as a result of challenges such as qualifying students not applying for their courses of choice hence missing placement opportunities as well as students opting for Diploma courses even when they qualify for Degree programmes.

However, for the over 100,000 students who did not manage to be admitted in universities for Degree programmes, there are numerous opportunities to join an institution of higher learning.

“These learners should not give up on their dreams as the education sector has expanded to accommodate students who got a grade below C+,” said Dr. Alice Njuguna, DVC in charge of Academics, Research and Extension at the University. She added that Zetech has established the Zetech Career Centre which offers

KNEC courses from artisan Level with a mean grade of D- as advised by the Kenya National Qualification Framework, to Diploma courses that can accommodate students from this group.

Nairobi County Hosts Timely Varsity Career Expo

etech University held a thrilling career exhibition in the heart of Nairobi County geared towards educating Kenyans on what it takes to join university. The exhibition followed the recent placement of students by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) that saw thousands of Kenyans miss out on placement as they did not attain the C+ qualification needed to undertake a Degree course.

Student Leaders urged to Promote Peace in Colleges, Universities Parliamentary Youth Representative Hon. niversity and College Student leaders have been challenged to take up the role of peace ambassadors in higher institutions of learning, in the wake of unrest experienced in several leading varsities in the country. This was the central message of the 2018 National Student Leaders Dialogue Conference organised by The Universities and Colleges Student Leaders Peace Association of Kenya (UCSPAK).

UCSPAK, a national student leaders’ organisation that aims to promote peace, brought together student leaders from public and private universities nationally and distinguished leaders in the education sector, to deliberate on proper channels that should be utilised to handle students’ grievances.

The forum that was held in Nairobi was attended by distinguished guests led by Prof. Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha, Chairman for Commission for University Education (CUE), Prof.

Mwendwa Thuranira, CEO, CUE, CEO, National Youth Council Mr. Raymond Ochieng and Nominated MP Hon. Gideon Keter who is a youth representative in Parliament.

Addressing the student leaders, CUE Chairman Prof. Chacha urged students to take the role of leadership by using proper channels such as dialogue to address grievances. He further requested the leaders to be accountable in what they do through clear documentation as this is useful during audits and for accountability purposes.

“Student leaders play a critical role in the development of our education sector. You are our watch dogs and

we encourage you to communicate to us when something requires our attention,” said Prof Chacha, adding, “other than destroying property and going to the streets, let us use more efficient and effective channels to reach out to University administration departments and the CUE.” The forum also involved conversations around tribalism and nepotism in institutions of learning, with leaders agreeing that these vices hinder the progress of the Kenyan education sector. The students were encouraged to fight tribalism in universities and colleges to avoid divisions along ethnic lines in leadership and in learning.

On his part, Raymond Ochieng, CEO National Youth Council, spoke to the leaders about acquiring employment and creating businesses, encouraging them to use the leadership experience to boost their CVs. “I urge you to always be a solution to a problem and not a part of it. As youth, utilise your potential to ensure you get something out of it, this will play a role in securing a good job anywhere in the world.” Ochieng said.

Kelvin Kirimi, Secretary General, Zetech University Students Association (ZUSA) appreciated the role of UCSPAK in organising the conference that challenged student leaders to serve with diligence and honour, “The forum was educative and helped us better define and understand our role as student leaders in promoting peace in universities, as well as enlightening us on matters affecting us such as unemployment and the law.” Kelvin said.

The new Zetech University Student Association (ZUSA) took an oath to serve and represent the varsity students following a successful student election, during a celebratory ceremony held at the institution’s Thika Road Campus.

The students exercised their democratic right, successfully electing a reputable team of qualified students to represent them, following an intense process headed by the Student Affairs department. A well able electoral team presided over the election which was a welcome development for learners, who had eagerly anticipated a fresh team of student leaders.

During the election that followed the Electoral College system, Eugene Odhiambo and his running mate Faith Khakasa executed a successful campaign that led to a victory in the hotly contested election. The Bachelor of Purchasing and Supply Chain Management student beat his competitor Samuel Adama to win the coveted ZUSA Chairperson post.

The new council vowed to execute their manifesto during the ceremony graced by the University leadership, led by Dr. Alice Njuguna, DVC-Aca-

demics, Research and Development.

The Council was advised to use the right channels to vocalise the needs of the student fraternity with a commitment from the Management to listen and implement their ideas.

The incoming Chairperson noted his desire and plans to fulfill promises he made in his manifesto. “I am grateful to the Zetech students for trusting me with such an honourable post and I am excited to represent my comrades. I will diligently serve them and ensure they enjoy their student life, in line with the ZUSA constitution.” Eugene said.

Commenting on the election, Elizabeth Muhia, Dean of Student Affairs said, “The voting process went on smoothly at our main and town campuses. The tallying of the votes was done by the electoral body under tight security and the results announced the same night, amid cheers and excitement.”

he Zetech University sports fraternity continues to claim bragging rights in national tournaments, giving opponents a run for their money in the competitive games. The University’s Football team locked down a deserved win against University of Nairobi’s Tandaza side in a heated clash during the start of the 2018 SportPesa Shield FKF tournament. The Varsity side, fresh from a brilliant performance in the KUSA final championship held in Taita Taveta silenced their opponents 1-0 with a 91st minute goal scored by Aron Omar during extra time.

In the men’s quarters, the gents are maintaining form in the KBF games, training well and doing their best to stay on top of their game.

Meanwhile, in martial arts, the Zetech Karate team claimed position one in the Kenya Karate Federation National Inter-Schools, Colleges and University championships.
