Unique concert for homeless charities Ivybridge is set to host a very special charity concert to raise money for charities working for homeless people. Organised by local up and coming band The Malthusian Trap, with support from local charity The Eddystone Trust, the concert on Saturday, 1st October, at The Clay Factory, Redlake Trading Estate, is part of the national Musicians Against Homelessness programme, set up to raise money for homeless charities while giving a platform for emerging musicians. Goldie Lookin Chain will be headlining a show packed with some of the finest musical talent Devon has to offer, all within a unique setting at community project The Clay Factory. The line-up includes popular local acts such as The Poet Junkies, Steve Strong, Pattern V Pusher, Jamie Yost, Samuel Wulf and Owen Penrice, as well as
The Malthusian Trap. All the acts have given their time for free, and the unique setting of this special concert has set the local music scene alight with excitement. As well as fantastic music, the event will include local artists, making it a festival of local arts and culture. Food will be available from local food producers and there will be a licenced bar. The event starts at 2pm and goes on until 11pm. Ticket are ÂŁ20 and can be obtained online at wegottickets.com All the profits from the event will go to homeless charities, so locals are being urged to show their support for an innovative project that will help make a difference, while also having a great time. NEWS Laura to ‘Brave The Shave’
Woodlands Park Primary School’s specialist music teacher, Debbie Down, presents a cheque for £662.20, raised by the school’s ‘WoodFest’ music festival, to Colin Allum, a co-ordinator of Ivybridge Memory Cafe. Pupils at the school worked alongside members of the Café, for people living with memory difficulties, in workshops, before performing at ‘Woodfest’ together. The workshops will commence again in September with a new group of children who love music and helping others.
NEW SOCIAL GROUP FOR CARERS STARTING A social group for people who care for family, partners or friends is being launched in Ivybridge this month. The group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month, starting on Wednesday, 7th September, between 11am and 12.30pm in Ivybridge Library. The group is for any carers in Ivybridge and the surrounding area who provide unpaid support for family, partners or friends who need help because they are ill, frail or have a disability. The group will be a chance to
meet other carers and have some social time together in a friendly environment. The group is being started by Devon Carers, a charity which supports unpaid carers in the Devon county area. Any carer in Devon can access its helpline, which is open six days a week for information, advice and signposting. There is also a regular newsletter about local events and support groups and a Carer Alert Card to ensure the person they care for gets help if something happens
to the carer. If any carer is struggling to look after themselves, or does not feel they have support from family and friends, or feels that they do not have the support and help that they need, they may wish to have a Carers Assessment, through which they may be able to access more support and help. STUDENTS CELEBRATE ANOTHER EXCELLENT YEAR OF A-LEVEL RESULTS Ivybridge Community College students have produced another year of excellent A-Level results, achieving a 99% pass rate. Over 200 students are university bound, with more than 30% confirmed on courses at Russell Group universities. Twenty five students achieved straight A, A* or Distinction* grades, with three planning to go to medical school and two to veterinary college.
William Battershill is Harvard University bound with a scholarship to study economics and Oliver Tyers is off to Oxford University to study physics. Naomi Keenan, with four A* grades, is going to medical school, as are Adam Tremlett and Mary-Kate Dolley. Chloe Wakeley, with three A* grades, and Jessie Tuckley are both set to study veterinary science. Performing Arts continues to
flourish with students heading for some prestigious colleges, including Danielle Collingwood, who is off to Barcelona with an A* and two Distinctions. In the National Diploma subjects, 15 students achieved Distinction* grades across the board, an exceptional achievement. The college is delighted that the hard work, dedication and commitment of students has been justly rewarded, with such fine results.

An Ivybridge woman is going to ‘Brave The Shave’ to raise money for Macmillian. Laura Willis is set to have her head shaved on Friday, 9th September, at 9pm at Ivybridge Constitutional Club. As well as raising money, Laura is also going to donate her hair to The Princess Trust, who provide free wigs to children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment. Laura has been moved to be a ‘brave shaver’ after witnessing members of her family battling cancer and seeing first hand the vital service Macmillian provide, not only for the patients but also their families. She also thinks that what The Princess Trust do is incredible by giving a child the chance to feel’normal’ while they go through the toughest challenge that they will face. CARNIVAL TIME FOR BROWNIES 2nd Ivybridge Brownies got in the mood for the Rio Olympics with a mini Rio carnival to end their term. Having each found a fact about Rio to share, so they could all learn about the Olympic host city, the girls made headdresses. Feathers were then flying – and dropping off – everywhere as the
girls headed outside for some games and then everyone enjoyed cooling down eating fruit kebabs. All the Brownies received their Mission Spectacular badge after completing activities throughout the term to celebrate 100 years of Senior Section (the guiding section for 14-25 year olds).
The meeting ended with the pack saying goodbye to its four eldest Brownies, who are moving on to Guides, and young leader Rosie Cantin or ‘Robin’, who, after four years helping, is off to university. î If you are interested in joining Brownies, visit girlguiding.org.uk to register your interest.
GET IT FIXED FOR FREE AT REPAIR IT IVYBRIDGE In a fix with your broken electrical items and gadgets? Then it is time to get them fixed for free at a special event in Ivybridge this month. Recycle Devon’s REPAIR IT event is taking place on Saturday, 10th September, at Ivybridge Methodist Church Hall. Recycle Devon is putting on a series of REPAIR IT events across the county for householders to bring along their broken electrical appliances, including computers, to be fixed by local menders at no cost Organised in conjunction with
local sustainability group PL:21 Transition Initiative, the Ivybridge event will run from 10am-12:30pm and repairs will be carried out on a first come, first served basis, so please be prepared to wait. Menders will include Stephen Evans from Any Fix South West. Tony Barber, chair of PL:21, says: “We’re looking forward to reaping the benefit of the local mending skills that are out there in the community for this event.” Emma Croft, Re-use Project Coordinator, added: “Research shows that more than 75% of the
small electrical items that come into our recycling centres could be back up and running if they were repaired. “These events are designed to help householders waste less and enable them to save money and resources by not having to replace something broken.” CRT TVs or monitors, electric blankets or microwaves will not be able to be fixed at the event for safety reasons.
St John’s Church Vintage Tea Party was a huge success, raising just over £400. People of all ages from the Parish and surrounding area enjoyed lovely homemade cakes served by the ‘nippy’ waitresses! Children had the chance to make sea pictures and spinning tops as well as play ‘hook a duck’ and other classics. There was also
a great raffle and plenty to buy. The church is now looking ahead to the big event in December when it will be holding its second Christmas Tree Festival. An Ivybridge girl has gained fantastic results in her first Irish dancing competition. Summer Collinge is the 911 British National Champion 2016 after winning the 9-11 open prelim championship at a CRDM national championship feis in Hemel Hempstead in July. She has also qualified for the All Irelands World Championship in Dublin next July. Summer, who goes to Stowford School, and dances for The Reel Academy of Irish Dance Devon and Cornwall, is also off to the European championships in November.

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN
T
he Somme Battle raged on. By 3rd September 1916 the 8th and 9th Devons had been fighting continuously since July and were behind the lines resting. They were unexpectedly summoned back to the front, the message interrupting an officers’ football match. On 6th September the 9th Devons – only 400 strong by this point – attacked alongside the Gordon Highlanders just east of Delville Wood near Ginchy, France. They suffered very heavy casualties. The regimental history states that eight officers and 100 men were killed, wounded or missing – 25% casualties. Amongst the dead were John Damerell of Woodlands, aged just 17. He died alongside Corporal Robert John Anstiss, aged 25, of Ivybridge. They are both buried in the Delville Wood cemetery. The fact that they are buried so close to the battle suggests that they were killed in action. One of the survivors, Company Sergeant Major Randell, reported to HQ afterwards that the damage was done by both enemy machine-gun fire and British shells falling short of their target.

News of these deaths reached home soon afterwards. John Damerell’s family still has the postcard sent to them showing John’s grave in Delville Wood Cemetery marked by a wooden cross.
Group celebrates successful year Erme Valley Riding for Disabled’s end of term barbecue and presentation evening marked the close of a very busy time for the south Devon based group. Riders, directors, volunteers, parents and friends came together to celebrate another successful year for the group and to commend the achievements and efforts of riders and volunteers alike. Junior rider Kirsty Mabin was recognised for her achievements in dressage and for her win at the 2016 National Championships on board pony Tilly. Meagan Mawson was presented with the ‘Young Helper of the year’ award to commend her efforts and commitment to the group, while Sophie Turriff was congratulated for her recent qualification as an RDA assistant coach. The group took five horses and 10 qualified riders to the annual Riding for Disabled National Championships, held at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire. The weekend saw success for many of the group’s riders in varying disciplines, from Imogen Darke’s win in the newly-established 6

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council LONGTIMBER WOODS Regular walkers in Longtimber Woods will have already seen the work to drain the former swimming pool area and put an earth ramp into the space to make it an accessible place to meet and enjoy barbecues. To celebrate the completion of the work and to increase understanding of this important area of ancient woodland, which is part of Dartmoor National Park, we are hosting an event on Sunday, 11th September, from 1pm until 4pm. Rupert Lane will provide a guided walk at 2pm through the area explaining the trees and how the area has evolved over centuries, as well as looking ahead to how people can get more involved by being part of a Friends group to support the activities, as well as understanding the management of this small part of Dartmoor National Park. The Ivybridge Heritage Group will have a small display about the history of the area and would welcome any local knowledge to add to their understanding, including any old photographs. The Guides will be on hand in the swimming pool area to prepare some food and drink using the new barbecues, but also to show off their camping skills too. Do come along and learn more about this fascinating area on our doorstep.

Fantastic results were also achieved in the dressage and show-jumping classes. The RDA National Championships is an event much anticipated by riders and volunteers of the group and a major highlight for all those involved. There is a substantial cost involved, however, so the group would like to
whole-heartedly thank players of the People’s Postcode Lottery for supporting the Riding for Disabled association, and for kindly donating funding to the Erme Valley group to help cover travel costs for the event. Entirely dependent on donations, the group would not be able to attend such events as the National Championships without the kind support of all those who donate and , as a group, are incredibly grateful.
Young Devon has appointed Oliver Bowers to be the Ivybridge youth worker on duty on Friday evenings in Ivybridge from 9th September, mostly based at the Leisure Centre as part of the Youth Leisure Nights. We are delighted that funding has been found and hope that if successful, the youth support in Ivybridge can be increased. Ivybridge Youth Leisure Nights recommence on the 9th with gymnastics, swimming, badminton and Xbox, so come along and join in the programme of activities; maybe you could be the next Max Whitlock or Adam Peaty?

IVYBRIDGE WALKING CLUB CELEBRATES 10 YEARS
TRADITIONAL PANTO Following the success of its summer comedy production, Ivybridge Theatre Company is by no means resting on its laurels. Indeed, plans are well advanced in preparation for their annual pantomime. The experienced production team have returned to a traditional family favourite in choosing Cinderella and the cast is already in place. Albeit a traditional panto, it’s been given a modern facelift, embracing topical themes and modern personalities. But don’t fret, there will still be the things children (old and young alike) love – the messy slapstick, the jokes about famous people, songs we know and the opportunity for everyone to participate. So, it is probably best that you book the February half-term 2017 dates in your diary now as you don’t want to miss it, do you? Oh no you don’t! DAY OFF TO A TEE The postponed Ivybridge Probus Club golf day finally took place at Wrangaton GC on 22nd July. The group, comprising both golfers and walkers, enjoyed the traditional bacon bap and coffee before teeing off in glorious weather. About two hours later, the party assembled at the final hole to welcome in the final three players. Although the whole event is played ‘for fun’, scores were kept and the best three were: 1st Peter Fielding; 2nd - Steve Woodcock; and 3rd Clive Hunter. At the club’s monthly lunch, officiated by Vice President Mike Fletcher in the absence of the President, business included the organisation of a quiz evening and the possible visit to the World War II Museum at Davidstow in Cornwall. You will need: • A low container/box/basket • 1 oasis block • 3 proteas/ large headed flowers, cut short • Conifer or foliage from garden • Sprigs of heather or similar • Any filler flowers or garden flowers. Cut the oasis block to fit the container and soak the block for 5-10 mins. Place in the container. Starting at the left side of the

arrangement, arrange the conifer at about 45 degree angle to graduate downwards towards the right side. Arrange the heather upright at the left side. Children at Woodlands Park Primary School who made beautiful cards during their lunch time to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday were delighted to receive a thank you letter from Buckingham Palace. The pupils were all very excited to hear that The Queen appreciated their thoughtfulness in sending the cards.
Year 3 children at Stowford School rounded off their Roman topic by treating the Year 5 classes to a trip to the theatre. As part of their topic they had investigated what the Romans liked to do for entertainment. They then worked in groups to adapt a Roman myth and create a play based on it. From preparing the script and casting, to stage directions and props, the children worked on their performances
before presenting a one-off performance in their specially-constructed Roman Theatre. “It was a lovely way to end the year,” said Year 3 teacher Brad Farnham. “They prepared their own dramatic performances without any help from the teachers, although they did support each other with advice. Despite some nerves, the final performances were a real success and much enjoyed by their older peers!”

Community Champion at Tesco Lee Mill Extra Kim TaylorLewis reports on how Tesco has been supporting the local community recently.
Tesco went along to its annual football tournament with fruit kebabs, which were sold for donations and raised another £108.00 for the club.

Food for feline friends We donated nine boxes of cat food to Gables Cats and Dogs Home after seeing a Facebook post asking for cat treats.
Woodlands Park Primary School held a design and technology project and teacher Kerry Pantoll approached Tesco about donating prizes. Each year group was given the task of making a toy with a moving part for a reception aged child. The children took part in action research, exploring existing toys before designing and creating their own toy over four days. It was incredibly hard to choose winners as all the projects were fantastic. Kim is pictured above with the winners (l-r): Sophie Haymes (foundation stage), Finley Manton (Year 4), Aaron Gabbey (Year 6), Robert Gabbey (year 1/2), Daniel Gibson (Year 5), Jayden Osbourne (Year 3/4), and Millie Lowe (Foundation stage). Abby Woodford is not in the picture but she also won for year 1/2. Fruity for football After Ivybridge Town FC raised £688.60 bag packing in store,
Customer community project St Luke’s Hospice was the winner of our customer community project last month. We raised £325.80, which we will be presenting to them soon. Food bank Thank you for helping us provide food for people in need this summer. At the end of June, we had collected 147 trays for the local food bank and Tesco will top up all collections by 20%. Nationwide, our June collection provided 2.8 million meals . Free fruit Tesco Lee Mill Extra is one of 800 Tesco stores across the UK offering free fruit to children while their parents shop.

National charity partnership Tesco partnered with Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation for our national charity partnership. Half of the money raised goes to support the vital work these charities do, with the remaining 50% will be used to inspire people to make better choices. Find out more at lets-dothis.org.uk
Our latest fundraiser had Rio de Tesco as the theme, with beach fancy dress. There was a great Rio bake off, with lots of yummy cakes to sell, we sold fruit pots for donations and managers spent the day in the stocks; ice buckets proved more popular than sponges! In total, the day raised £366.11.

If you run your business through a limited company, or are considering forming a company, then you need to know about recent changes to taxation of dividends. A very common route for extracting tax efficient money from your company is to draw a small salary, attracting no tax, and pay any further remuneration by dividend. As long as your salary plus dividends remained below £43,000 then the dividends
would not attract any further tax, meaning up to £43,000 extracted from the company tax free! This has been very standard tax planning for many years and has proved very popular. As such, it was only a matter of time before changes were made by government. Changes, with effect from 6th April 2016, now mean that any dividends above £5,000 per year attract tax at 7.5% and if you go over £43,000 of total income then they are taxed at 32.5%, so not quite as appealing as it once was. The effect of these changes means that company owners may lose any tax advantages over a similar-sized sole trade

Mediterranean diet A 2013 study showed the Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by 20

30% and prevents weight gain which puts pressure on your heart. The diet also helps to prevent further worsening of existing heart disease, so it’s NEVER too late to start eating healthily.
Reduce salt Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Check the salt content of any pre-packaged food you buy.
No processed foods There are lots of hidden saturated fats, sugars and salts in processed food, fast food, and ready meals. I would strongly advise you to check the content of the ingredients of any food you buy and start cooking from scratch together.
Quit smoking Smokers are twice as likely as nonsmokers to have heart disease. With all the health issues it causes, stopping smoking is the most important thing you can do for your heart.
Join a Fit Camp! The heart is the most important muscle and just a small amount of intense exercise will keep it functioning properly. While there are people that thrive on conflict, most people do not enjoy falling out with others. However, disputes are a part of life. Whether in relation to defective goods or poorly performed services, a physical injury which has been caused by negligence, or a falling out with one’s partner, potential conflict situations arise in life. Disputes can be expensive in terms of financial cost and emotional capital. Here are a few suggestions for limiting the damage from disputes:

THE LEVELS OF CARE OUTLINED The Care Act 2014, in setting out the rights of those requiring assessment for care and support and their carers, has led many to believe after discharge from hospital all care becomes the responsibility of local authorities, not the NHS. Whether or not it was the intention of Parliament to create that confusion is debatable, but, just as the cradle to grave concept of health care free at the point of delivery has been allowed to persist since 1948, so now is the belief that local authorities are responsible for all health care outside of hospital. That belief is not true! There are three basic levels of health care available. One, provided by or funded by the NHS, is called “continuing health care” [CHC] which can be delivered in a hospital, nursing home, care home or an individual’s own home. This care is free. The second is social care, which is arranged or provided by social services. This is means tested and if a person has assets (savR and property) in excess of ings £23,250 in England that care must
be paid for from those assets, but only in certain circumstances. Slightly different amounts apply in Scotland and Wales. The third is an integrated “package of care” provided by the NHS, social services and individual contributions. This package of care happens when the NHS refuse to provide free continuing health care, but agree an element of nursing care beyond the legal

As you may already know, Rangers spend a large proportion of their time managing public rights of way and access on Dartmoor. Currently, works are underway to renew the way marker posts that denote the linear bridleway that runs over Hanger Down. When looking at the Ordnance Survey map, this route is marked with a dashed green line – whereas a footpath would be a dotted green line. You will also notice that the area is covered in a ‘yellow wash’ that denotes public area access – but what type? We are very fortunate on Dartmoor to have over 47,000 hectares of public area access. There are different types of area access with different rights that apply to them. Firstly, Common land was originally designated in 1985 and illustrated the historic rights that local farms had, including stock grazing and the right to local resources from the nearby common. Under the Commons Act, the provision of open access on foot and on horseback also meant that the public had access over these commons, subject to the associated byelaws, creating 35,200 hectares of open access. Byelaws include lots of information and common sense restrictions concerning items such as vehicles, parking, camping, water, fires, dogs and protection of wildlife. Secondly, in addition to common land, other areas that were not designated as common may have access agreements over them – between the National Park Authority and the landowner to secure public access. Hanger Down is one such example where the yellow wash shows the access, but it is not common land. This means that on Hanger Down you have area access to the down on foot, but if you were on a horse or bike you need to follow the Bridleway – hence the importance of the way-marking. Our byelaws also apply to most access agreement areas. Thirdly, there was a national act passed in 2000, The Countryside and Rights of Way Act, which designated mountain, moor, heath and down as ‘open country’ (commonly described as the right to roam or CRoW Act) with additional parcels of land becoming open access by 2005. This act did not have a huge impact on Dartmoor as much of the moor was already common land. It did, however, add to open area access in certain places – which are marked with the open country logo. Within this open country you are able to access the land on foot – and again on the OS map it is covered in a yellow wash. As you can now appreciate, access rights are not always the same, so please take the time to acknowledge and adhere to local signs and the National Park byelaws. AEGEAN WINS OPEN WATER TITLES

A 14-year-old Ivybridge swimmer is celebrating after winning the Devon Junior Female Open Water title at Torquay. Aegean Bramley (right), who swims for Dinnaton SC, won the title at the event held at Oddicombe Beach. As an ASA open water event, participants compete without a wet suit and have to adapt to the changeable conditions of the venue. Under the guidance of head coach Matthew Henry, Aegean’s open water swimming has gone from strength-to-strength since competing at the ASA South West Open Water Championships at Weymouth in June. Aegean won Silver in the girls 15 Year Old Category in the choppy waters of Weymouth bay, and in doing so, the Ivybridge Community College student gained qualification for the ASA National Open Water ChampiB onships in Sheffield.
Erme Valley Harriers’ athletes have travelled ‘far and wide’ in recent weeks and enjoyed considerable success. Neil Holmes again excelled at the Haytor Heller on Dartmoor, one of his favourite races, finishing 8th overall and 1st mv50. Emma Lake also did well, coming home 1st fv40. Sarah Hirons and Jo Edwards tackled the ‘Race to the Stones’, a 100km race along the Ridgeway in the Chilterns, finishing next to the stone circles at Avebury. Hirons (10 hrs 59 mins) was 3rd lady, whilst Edwards (11 hrs 10 mins) was 4th lady. Hirons was 26th overall and Edwards 30th overall in a race where there were some 950 finishers. A club trip to Frome saw Harriers compete in all three races, the 5k, 10k and half marathon. In the 5k, Owen Parkin (16.55) had a great run to win the race, while Joe Perry was 7th (18.30).
At the Nationals, over a three kilometre course, Aegean found herself moving up through the field on each of the laps, finishing 15th in one of the largest and most competitive fields of the day. She was also the best of the South West girls. In the week following Nationals, Aegean won Dinnaton SC’s first Junior Girls Open Water title. Competing against girls up to the age of 16, Aegean distanced herself from her rivals to win by over a minute.

Most athletes ran in the 10k, with Andrew Perry the first Harrier home and 2nd mv40. Alison Thorn and Cleo Perry, who both represented Devon, did well – Thorn was 3rd and Perry 4th female. Steve Watson set a new vet 65-69 age record with a time of 49.30. Andy Trigg was 6th overall and 1st mv50 in the half. Trigg was also 1st mv50 in the ‘King of the Hill’ challenge. Also in the half, Ken Summers set a new vet 65-69 age record with a time of 1.45.25. At the Exeter 10K, Mike Miners (38.09) was the first Harrier home. Tony Doonan (55.30) was 3rd mv70. The Harriers’ had a good turnout at the Cornwood 10k, with Matt Brown the first Harrier home in 6th place and closely followed by Andrew Perry who was 7th. Perry was also 1st mv45. Young athlete Sam Yearling won the Fun Run. Yearling also did well at the Run Exe Summer 5k Series finishing 1st U15, with Jo Edwards 1st fv50. î ermevalleyharriers.co.uk
