School ‘outstanding’ say inspectors

Woodlands Park Primary School has been named as one of the best schools in the country after being rated as outstanding across the board. It was judged as outstanding in all five key areas of its work - quality of teaching and the achievement of pupils, leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils, and the Early Years provision - following a two-day visit by three Ofsted inspectors last month. The inspectors’ verdict is a personal tribute to headteacher Heather Hanrott who is retiring at the end of the academic year. She said: “I am absolutely delighted. I feel very proud and privileged to be the headteacher of such a successful school and to work with such a hard-working, committed and enthusiastic team.”

Crisis could close country market Ivybridge Country Market, which has been serving the community on Friday mornings for almost 30 years, is at crisis point and urgently needs more people to join as producers and committee members if it is to survive. Following the retirement of some members, which coincided with others moving away from the area, the popular market needs more people to sell at the market and help run it. Members of the market produce

delicious, high-quality food and well-made craft items and have many happy customers. If you would like to make some pocket money out of your hobby, enjoy meeting people, working together as a team and have a few hours to spare every week, they would love to hear from you.

NEW FACE

LIBRARY OPEN ALL DAY WEDNESDAYS

Ivybridge & District Community Transport Association has welcomed a new co-ordinator to the non-profit making local charity. Alex Thom took up the post at the beginning of April following the retirement of David Bishop. The association’s minibuses provide a weekly door-to-door shopping service for people without access to their own transport, and a team of volunteer drivers take people to doctors, dentists, hospital or just to visit friends. Outgoing co-ordinator David Bishop said it was sad to ‘let go’. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in managing the Association and have met some terrific people.”

î For further information on the service, or to volunteer, call 01752 690444 or go to www.idcta.co.uk.

î For more information, call in at

the Scout Hut next to Leisure Centre on Friday morning, phone 01752 659654 or find the market on Facebook

Following last year’s public consultation, it was clear that there was a demand for Ivybridge Library to open on a Wednesday. As a result, from 27th May, the library will be open all day on a Wednesday. Library staff will be altering their working pattern so that they will be on hand from 9am-1pm to help customers; between 1-5pm there will be a Library Extra service operated by the volunteers. This session will enable people to browse, borrow and return books and other items as well as use the computers. The Information Centre is also moving to the library, which it is hoped will provide a more efficient and streamlined service to all customers.

Ivybridge Flower Club is taking part in the NAFAS National Flower Arranging Day’s campaign, 'The Lonely Bouquet', on 1st May. Small bouquets of flowers will be left around the town with an explanatory tag for people to pick up and take home.

O'yez! O'yez!

Ivybridge has its first Town Crier since 1928 following the appointment of Ian Wintersgill to make some noise about the town. The aim of the Crier is to engage with the public, promote what the town has to offer and attend events. He can be hired for a small fee, which will be split between Ian to cover expenses and Ivybridge Memory Cafe and Riding For The Disabled. î To hire Ian, contact Margaret

Lawsons ladies Race for Life

On 21st June, the Lawsons’ Ladies Team will be joining the Pink Army and running the Plymouth 5k Race for Life for Cancer Research UK. Every pound you donate really does make a difference and will help them reach their £300 fundraising target. î To sponsor the Lawsons’

NEW LAUNDERETTE

A new selfservice launderette and sewing room, together with eco-friendly dry cleaning, is set to open in Ivybridge this month. The services, which will be available from premises at the Archway, Costly Street, marks the return to the town of Amanda Barnes, who previously ran a dry cleaning business in the town, and owns the successful Devon Commercial Cleaning and Barnes The Cleaners in Totnes. The new premises will be a onestop-shop for all your laundry, alteration and cleaning needs. Self-service washing and drying machines will be available, and the dry cleaning will be environmentally-friendly wet cleaning, which washes items in water rather than solvent. The process uses no chemicals, and Amanda is the only cleaner in the South Hams licensed to operate under the Wool mark. A full range of dry cleaning services will be offered, including clothes, leather, suede, duvets and wedding dresses. You will also be able to have garments altered on-site in the sewing room.

Ivybridge during

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

by tony rea

RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

Colin Harris, manager of Stowford Mill from 1979-1995, has written another fascinating book called ‘Random Writings’. It is just that, and mentions many snippets of mill life and is printed on some of the last paper to be made at the mill. The book is available for a donation of £10 which will go to Shelter Box, Hospice Care and Devon Air Ambulance. The Ivybridge Mill Archive Group is hosting a book signing at Ivybridge Library on 14th May between 2-4pm where, by popular request, many of the mill photo’s will be on display, plus other points of Ivybridge Heritage. For further information please telephone 895875.

t

wo months of relative quiet for the 2nd Devons followed the battle of Neuve Chappelle (see March). Throughout April reinforcements arrived to replace casualties, but by the beginning of May the battalion was still understrength and was particularly short of officers. William Northcott of Ivybridge was with the battalion by then; he was aged 21. From the evidence I have been able to look at, it is not clear where and how William died, but here are some thoughts. First, a list of what is known. • The 2nd Devons were involved in the attack on Aubers Ridge on 9th May and suffered tremendous casualties: 67 soldiers were killed or missing and 167 – including the CO, Colonel Ingles - were wounded. • Private 9639 Northcott, W. died on 25th May and was buried in

Rue-Petillon, Fleurbaix, northern France (above). • Fleurbaix is about 4 kilometers north of Aubers. One possibility is that William Northcott may have been wounded during the attack on Aubers and then died whilst being treated and buried (or, more likely, re-buried as after the war many graves in the area were concentrated on the RuePetillon cemetery). However, I think this is unlikely for two reasons. First, there were 16 days between the attack on Aubers Ridge and William’s death, which is more than enough time to

Deli

Ivybridge

move a wounded soldier to a hospital. Second, dressing stations, field hospitals and larger hospitals were behind the front line – which would put them west of Aubers, not north of it. It is more likely, I believe, that William Northcott was killed or died of wounds received after the battle. Soldiers could be killed in many diverse ways. Snipers were always active; William may have been selected – or volunteered – to take part in a night time raid; the size and shape of a British army latrine was almost exactly the same as a trench mortar emplacement, making it the target of enemy artillery. Yes, many soldiers were killed whilst on the toilet. It is more than likely that Private William Alfred Northcott (2nd Devons) - may simply have been unlucky, in the wrong place at the wrong time..

Two thirds of those with dementia live in the community Locally, there is a committee working towards the aim of making Ivybridge a dementia-friendly community. A dementia-friendly community is one in which people with dementia are empowered to have high aspirations and feel confident, knowing they can contribute and participate in activities that are meaningful to them. If you are interested in finding out more about what you, your community group or business could do to help support Ivybridge as a Dementia-friendly community, or even in joining the committee yourself, email Ivybridgedementiafriends@hotmail.com

MEET THE JOLLY DOLLIES

Saturday, 23 May: Widows, why not come and meet the Ivybridge JDs at The Riverbank Cafe, Glanvilles Mill, at 11am with a view to joining us? Our aim is to connect, and support, widows locally and nationally so that the JD’s network can reach all those widows who want and deserve to have a full, happy and supportive social life. The JDs understand that the period of bereavement is handled differently and unique for everyone, however, the time comes for most of us when we feel confident enough to want to pick up our social lives. FUN WITH FLOWERS Jane Wonnacott, a florist and demonstrator from Beaworthy, visited Ivybridge Flower Club for its April meeting and used as her title “Fun with flowers”. Jane had members laughing fit to burst as she regaled them with tales of her family and the ups and downs of life living as a farmer’s wife on a farm through the foot and mouth disaster, her children and now grandchildren, with her arrangements all linked to different aspects of her journey. The club’s next meeting is on Monday, 11th May, at the Library, starting at 7.30pm. The demonstrator is Margaret Heal, whose title is “Hearts and flowers”. Visitors are welcome to club meetings, £5. 40TH ANNIVERSARY VISIT Twenty-eight members of the Ivybridge German Society visited Beverungen at the beginning of April to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the unofficial link between the two towns. The exchange started in 1975 as a school venture from the community college after one of the teachers relocated to Beverungen, but quickly developed as an adult exchange, and has taken place annually since. Guests stay with German families, with a programme of visits through the week, escorted by the hosts.

This year we were greeted by the Press and Town Mayor (Burgermeister), who spoke warmly of the value of such exchanges and his speech marked the start of a wonderful week. Our hosts surprised us further with a presentation book of photographs for each guest and a superb farewell party. It was a thoroughly enjoyable trip - now we must put on our thinking caps to see how we can reciprocate in a suitable manner when our guests come to visit us in October and give them a real West Country welcome.

2012, Ivybridge Theatre Company thought it would be great to stage another Christie play and particularly appropriate in this, the 125th anniversary year of her birth. The members have chosen Cards on the Table, adapted for the stage by Leslie Darbon, which will be performed at The Watermark on Friday, 14th and 15th August, at 7.30pm. The play

is a typical ‘whodunnit’: the scene is set with Mr Shaitana, a rather strange and wealthy collector of objets d’art, hosting a dinner party for six people. A murder is committed of course but there are many red herrings and skeletons in the cupboard before the Superintendent can lay his “cards on the table”! Look out for more details nearer the time. Murder mysteries ITC has a number of Murder Mystery events for private groups in the coming months, and due to popular demand, plans are also in hand to perform one very soon in Ivybridge which will be open to the general public. New term for Ivybridge Town Council – councillors needed This year we have the new Wards for Ivybridge – East and West Wards rather than Filham, Central and Woodlands Wards. The elections for South Hams District Council and one of the Ivybridge Town Council wards (East) will be held on 7th May. However, we only have six Councillors for Ivybridge West (so they have been elected unopposed) and need to co-opt two more to join the Council. Please consider joining the team and being involved at a very exciting time for Ivybridge. Over the next four year Electoral term we can anticipate the building of up to 700 new homes; Stowford Mill redevelopment; leisure centre area redevelopment; enhanced health facilities and plan documents looking further ahead for the town to 2031. Added to which there are the sports and open spaces and The Watermark which are part of the direct responsibility of the Town Council. These continue to evolve and offer improved services for

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council the community, alongside the support for services such as CAB, young people, local history and caring groups. We hope to hear from people who live or work in Ivybridge and who wish to make a contribution to the town and be part of its future. Please contact the Town Clerk, Lesley Hughes, for more information. LOCAL HISTORY The Ivybridge Museums and Archives Group (IMAG) has been working hard to ensure that the town doesn’t lose the history of

Stowford Mill and their Facebook page has regular requests for information. Later this year they have been invited by Dartmoor National Park Authority to contribute to an exhibition at Princetown regarding the role of Stowford Mill and surrounding area in the First World War. In May, when the changes to the front area at The Watermark are introduced, they will be having displays about Stowford Mill and the town, so would welcome feedback and comments – but most especially more people to join the group and help as Trustees, as they are keen to

fundraise and eventually have a permanent space (hopefully at the Mill) to display the material, much in fact in digital form. Other ideas like a Heritage Dandy Roll walk as well as a project officer to bring together all our local history are being explored. Fairport Convention

The Watermark welcomes back Fairport Convention on Wednesday 20th May. Fairport Convention are an English folk rock and electric folk band. Formed in 1967, they are widely regarded as the most important group in the English folk rock movement. Their seminal album Liege & Lief is considered to have launched the electric folk or English folk rock movement, which provided a distinctively English identity to rock music and helped awaken much wider interest in traditional music in general. The large number of personnel who have been part of the band are among the most highly regarded and influential musicians of their era and have gone on to participate in a large number of significant bands, or enjoyed important solo careers. Since 1979, they have hosted the Cropredy Festival, which is the largest such annual event in England. Individually and collectively the members of Fairport Convention have received numerous awards recognizing their contribution to music and culture. Tickets: £23/£22 concessions call the box office on 01752 892220.

Paul Foot Eurovision Party

Celebrate the 60th anniversary of everyone’s guilty pleasure with The Watermark’s Eurovision Party on Saturday, 23 May. Pre-order a Viennese Sausage and French Fries, Euro themed cocktail and flag to wave on the United Kingdom for just £10. Available online, by calling 01752 892220 or in person from the Box Office. Watch all the proceedings from Vienna on the big screen, be part of The Watermark jury to decide who we think will be the winner, see how it compares with the final result. Come dressed in the national costume of your choice or a past or present contestant, a prize will be given to the best dressed.

Paul Foot commands a significant cult following called The Guild of Connoisseurs. Heralded by critics, Paul’s previous tours have been showered with 5 star reviews and nominations, credited as “masterful” (Scotsman) and “ingenious” (The Australian Herald Sun). His subversive, insightful absurdity constantly challenges and delights his faithful connoisseurs, leaving “your sides sore and your face wet with tears” (Edinburgh Evening News). His most recent TV credits include BBC1’s “Would I Lie To You”, BBC2’s “Never Mind The Buzzcocks”, C4’s “8 Out Of 10 Cats” and Comedy Central’s “The Alternative Comedy Experience”. Don’t miss your chance to see “a cult classic, a relic from the past, a rare exotic bird, he’s special” (The Daily Express)."It's baffling to me that Paul is not a household name in this country. His routines are like jazz clusters, loose hammocks, choked to the brim with jokes and ideas" (Noel Fielding). See him at The Watermark on Friday 22 May Tickets: £12.50

Coming up:

Something for all the family at The Watermark in the coming months... including Simon & Garfunkel Through the Years performed by Bookends, the legendary Dr. John Cooper Clarke, The Pantaloons are back with their rendition of Treasure Island, entertain the children in the summer holidays with 2 matinee performances of Animal Alphabet with Nicky Kemp, Mused a tribute to Muse, the return of Ben Waters with Dave Lee, Richard Digance with his Art Exhibition, meet and greet and concert. And much much more...

Improvements at The Watermark

During May, The Watermark will be moving the Information Centre into the Library space and expanding the coffee shop seating area. It will provide a new spacious and colourful environment with more room between the tables to make it much more accessible to get around. They will still be delivering the same service during this time but please bear with them whilst they make these exciting improvements.

well Acupuncture for sporting injuries BY FIONA MATTHEWS Acupuncture South Devon

With summer approaching, more people will be encouraged to get physical. Athletes at all levels are susceptible to injury. Poor training practices, failure to warm up, accidents, lack of fitness and improper equipment can cause significant sports injuries. Acupuncture is routinely used in the treatment of sporting injuries and effectively treats tired limbs, strained muscles and other musculoskeletal complaints, preventing prevent further injury. Acupuncture can promote the body’s own healing abilities and research shows that treatment can help recovery by: • Providing pain relief

• Reduce swelling and bruising • Speeding up the healing of wounds • Breaking down scar tissue • Relaxing muscles and relieve spasms • Promoting faster recovery after training sessions • Increasing range of movement

BY DEBBIE BAKEWELL Side By Side Counselling

Acupuncture not only aids recovery and enables athletes to return to training more quickly, but with regular treatments, can also enhance performance. The treatment can be directed to the muscle groups required for the particular sport, which improves their blood circulation, energy and strength. If you would like more information or to find out if traditional acupuncture could help you, contact Fiona Matthews. Mental wellbeing is equally as important as physical wellbeing. The difference is that it can’t be bandaged like a broken limb. Nonetheless, it still deserves the same quality of support without the stigma and embarrassment that we, as a society, place on mental health issues. The Duchess of Cambridge is Royal Patron for the children’s charity ‘Place2Be’, and has recently made it her mission to breakdown the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging parents not to be embarrassed in seeking help. I firmly believe that with early intervention, and by working through those difficult thoughts and feelings that are causing you pain, in a safe, confidential space, you can take back control. I work with all ages, including children and young adults, involving a wide range of issues. Counselling should be available to all, which is reflected in my fees – with concessions available for young people. I offer an initial one-hour session free of charge, so that we can meet, you get an idea of how counselling may work for you and to see whether you are ready to embark on your journey. ARE THINGS NOT AS THEY SEEM? BY YVONNE AND DIANE Ivy Counselling

{|

“Maybe they are, maybe they’re not!” How can your world feel so dark when outside there is light? People around you believe you are coping, you continue with your everyday life, no one is aware of the struggles within. The times you want to break down and cry but something prevents you

FEAR NOT FLYING

from doing so, the times you want to express your frustration or anger but choose not to, the difficulties of holding back emotionally and physically is absorbing all your strength and taking its toll. Perhaps you have no one you can trust to share your thoughts and feelings for fear of being judged or simply finding it almost impossible to allow yourself to open up. Maybe your confusion is starting or already impacting on those you care about and love but because you are lost in your own world, you are unaware of how it is affecting others? It becomes like throwing a pebble into a pond and watching the ripples becoming wider, unable to stop them spreading and the sense of losing control coupled with feelings of guilt?

Many of us are looking forward to that summer holiday and jetting off somewhere nice – and many start to get nervous at the thought of getting on a plane. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you overcome the “fear response” which can make so many people feel tense and uneasy as they approach an airport or as they board a plane. “For some people, the idea of flying can make them uncomfortable,” says Tiffany Armitage, a Solution Focused Hypnotherapy practitioner based in Ivybridge and Plymouth. “I work with a client, normally over a period of four sessions, to help them approach flying in a calm,

Further sessions use hypnosis to ease the client’s mind into a relaxed and calm state, and help them overcome their fear and look forward to the flight itself. “Following the sessions, I have found people can go off on holiday and actually enjoy the experience of being on a plane!” Tiffany Armitage Hypnotherapy 01752 710277 / tiff@tiffanyarmitage. co.uk / hypnotherapist-plymouth.co.uk

home&garden May Gardening Tips What to do in your garden this month Weed out... weeds

Hoe your borders to get rid of weeds before they take hold - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. Dandelions are a monstrous nuisance at this time of year – if you don’t have time to deal with them terminally, at least chop their heads off before they set seed.

Precious liquid

Water is a precious commodity instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. The trick with watering is to water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and W often (containers etc. do need watering every day).

Pest control

Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum – they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them, such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae.

The ‘war’ continues

Unless you are a Buddhist or a pacifist, now is the time to wage

Lawn care

The perfect lawn needs love and attention, and of course the right equipment to help with its maintenance. MOWING It's best to stick to the ‘third off’ rule; if your grass is 3 inches tall set your lawnmower to 2 inches. Never taking more than this off will ensure that your lawn retains its bounce. Try to mow your lawn as frequently as possible; mow when it's relatively dry as mowing a wet lawn will give you bald patches. TRIMMING If you’re after perfectly manicured edges, a trimmer with an edger attachment is an invaluable piece of lawn equipment – you simply wheel it along the edge of your lawn to create a perfectly straight line. If you don't have a trimmer, then unfortunately you'll have to use shears. WATERING It's best to water well and infrequently. Even during a drought you should only water your lawn around once a week. Watering too often will make your grass disease prone. A sprinkler is ideal, but if you're not lucky enough to own one, use a hose pipe with a fine attachment.

war on slugs and snails. They love tulips and delicacies such as the delicious young shoots of delphiniums and the like, so use pet-friendly slug pellets, drench the ground around hostas with liquid slug killer to exterminate slugs below the surface or invest in a biological control (this employs nematodes to deliver a slug-lethal bacterial infection) – all are available from the garden centre. Keep an eye out for snails and pick them off... Other unwelcome visitors on the move are lily beetles (bright red little darlings with black heads and their yellow larvae), blackspotted green caterpillars or the gooseberry sawfly. m e fro advic at g in n s t e Gard he exper t

ADVERTORIAL

Protecting your assets There are so many ways that assets, including your home, never reach your children or the people you want them to after your death. Here are just a few of the things that can happen, resulting in someone else receiving your assets, such as someone else’s children or an aggrieved relative, even a divorced spouse that has not re-married, or the local authority or your spouse’s creditors. Frightening isn’t it? Here are just a few examples: Mr & Mrs P have children from previous marriages and leave everything to each other on first death and then to be shared equally between

both their children. Mrs P dies first and Mr P receives all the assets, however several years later he falls out with one of his own children and one of his step-children and cuts them out of his will and Mrs P’s child is not entitled to anything. Worse than that, he would not have us oversee the signing of the Will and let us take it for safe storage. After his death the Will could not be found and none of her children got anything. There are many other cases where, after 1st death the surviving partner meets someone else and one day makes a new Will leaving everything to the new

Children in Years 1 and 2 at Manor Primary School enjoyed a day’s activities centred on the Great Fire of London thanks to Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum. The experiences of a visitor to London on that fateful day were related to the children by an actor, and they were able to question him about what had happened. Hands-on experiences then included dressing up in authentic costumes, learning about money, shopping and food during the period and investigating models of houses from that time. They even had a go at using quills for writ-

as people going into care and the property goes to pay for care fees, or after 1st death the remaining partner goes into business then bankruptcy follows meaning the children or other beneficiaries get nothing. Come to one of our seminars (see our advert on page 17) to find out how most situations can be avoided by different types of Wills and a variety of Trusts. A BUSY TIME FOR THE HARRIERS

Charity cricket in league of its own

Sport

l 20/20 cricket

Two years ago, cricket-loving regulars of the Old Smithy pub decided to help the fundraising of the landlord, Rob, for Guide Dogs for the Blind by forming a cricket team. The idea was to play a few friendly games to raise money, and have a bit of fun, too. The friendlies were a great success, raising over £850. This year the team has decided to take the next step and has joined the P&D midweek cricket league. Although the P&D league does not have the razzmatazz of Twenty 20 cricket, it is the same format and the team is encouraging locals to come and support the guys for a fun evening of cricket and a little fundraising at the same time. Home games are at Ivybridge CC’s Filham Park pitch, starting around 6pm; the bar will be open for refreshments. The team face an intriguing first match on 18th May... versus Ivybridge CC! î A list of fixtures can be found at the Devon cricket website or on the Old Smithy’s notice board
