news COMMUNITY CYCLE EVENTS Local sustainability group PL:21 Transition Town Initiative has joined with Sustrans and neighbouring Sustainable South Brent for 12 guided bike rides between March and June. It is the fourth year of community cycle events, which allow people of all abilities to be challenged as well as discover some of the beautiful local landscapes. The rides are led by local volunteers from sustainable transport charity Sustrans and are aimed to encourage people to use their bikes in a safe environment. While some rides will be short, others are longer to give cyclists the opportunities to test their stamina. All rides in 2018 have an added interest and many are micro adventures to discover lesser known lanes and some

beautiful scenery locally. The first ride, on Sunday, 11th March, is a warm-up ride to South Brent starting at 10am from The Watermark. Other rides will vary from short

rides of five miles up to a 50 mile adventure ride over Dartmoor. There are some evening rides, too. i To find out more about any of the

rides visit sustrans.org.uk/events

A CINEMA FOR IVYBRIDGE CROWDFUNDING APPEAL The Watermark is looking to install fully digital cinema equipment and is asking the community to help through a crowdfunding appeal. A Cinema for Ivybridge project will see the cinema facilities upgraded with full digitisation, greatly enhancing the breadth and frequency of what can be screened as well as dramatically improving accessibility. The new installation will have the latest equipment for hard of hearing and audio description for visually impaired, meaning blind, partially-sighted, and hard of hearing audience members Contact us Call/text: 07516 539573 E: editor@theivybridge magazine.co.uk F: @Theivybridgemagazine T: @Ivybridgemag theivybridgemagazine.co.uk The imag is an independent magazine published and produced by Lily design, 6 Claymans Pathway, Woodlands, Ivybridge PL21 9UZ. © Lily design 2018. DIGITAL DONATION

Pupils at The Erme Primary School are well on their way to getting a set of child-friendly digital cameras thanks to a £100 donation from Backline Logistics, a South West-based recruitment and training provider. Sam Hay from Backline said: “We strongly believe in supporting the communities where we work, and were particularly interested by the more practical approach to learning at The Erme. “We’re looking forward to seeing some of the snaps they take with their new equipment!”

POETRY BY HEART Students at Ivybridge Community College took part in the Poetry by Heart competition last month. The evening commenced with students from Key Stage 4 and 5 reading selected pre-1914 poems, followed by readings of Shakespearian sonnets by teaching staff from the English and drama departments. The competing students then read their second reading, post-1914 poems from the Poetry by Heart anthology. The winner was Year 12 student Archie Duke, whose

readings of A Satirical Elegy on the death of the late famous General by Jonathan Swift and Border by Gillian Clarke wowed the judges in terms of understanding, performance and accuracy. The judges were also impressed with the level of challenge and difficulty of the poems chosen by Archie who delivered both readings with aplomb. Sarah Lannin, also in Year 12, came second. Archie Duke’s readings will now be submitted to the Poetry by Heart judging panel for the county contests.

HENRY JOHN FICE LEE Henry John Fice Lee was a prominent member of the community of Ivybridge, serving on the Urban District Council as well as being a successful businessman. Born in 1861 at Yealmpton, he moved to Ivybridge living in Clare Street and later at Greenwood on Western Road. He was a baker by profession and vowed to his wife that he would one day have his own flour mill to supply his business. It seems he was always willing to serve his community in whatever capacity; in 1897-1898 he was president of the Plympton, Ivybridge and District Master Bakers’ Association. Only a year before he had been elected to the Ivybridge Urban District Council. At this time, in the centre of Ivybridge there was a paper mill owned by Francis and Henry Holman which produced wrapping papers, whilst alongside there was the cooperative-run flour mill known as Union Mills. At the turn of the century, the Holman family decided to sell their interests in Ivybridge to concentrate their business activities at their other site in Lee Mill. Henry Lee saw an opportunity and purchased the paper mill. He then went about converting the premises into a corn mill, fulfilling his ambition. He constructed a new façade to the mill, facing Fore Street, which became an iconic feature of Ivybridge. He later purchased the neighbouring Union Mills which had passed into private ownership and eventually bought the old tannery beyond. The complete site was then known as “Lee and Son, Ivybridge Ltd”. Clearly his business was successful as he later extended his

operations to Yealmpton, where he founded Lee Bros. With offices located in Highland Street, the Urban District Council met on the first Monday of every month. Henry Lee was a member for 27 years and from 1913 he served as chairman, continuing in this role for the next 10 years. During his time in office, his most notable achievement was perhaps the establishment of a new water supply, which he pursued with great vigour. In 1915, a new impounding reservoir was created by forming a dam across Butter Brook on Harford Moor. Pipes were then laid to bring fresh water to the village. Built at a cost of £17,000, it had a capacity of around four million gallons. The reservoir was officially opened on the 31st May, 1916, by Lord Mildmay of Flete

TWO MOORS WAY FOR PILGRIMAGE The chairman of the Royal British Legion Ivybridge Branch is set to walk the 102-mile Two Moors Way to raise money for the branch’s standard bearer and wreath layer to attend the Royal British Legion recreation of its 1928 pilgrimage to World War I battlefields. Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90) will be the RBL’s biggest membership event in its his-

and was known as Butter Brook Reservoir. This replaced the old reservoir in Longtimber Woods which had become inadequate for the growing population of Ivybridge and the increasing demand for good quality water. Henry John Fice Lee, by virtue of his position on the council, also served as a Justice of the Peace. Petty Sessions, handling the majority of lesser criminal and civil cases, were heard bi-monthly at the London Hotel. Presiding JPs, who were unpaid and often without any formal legal training, were usually prominent members of the community or wealthy landowners. Despite his heavy work commitments, Henry Lee still found a little time for leisure activities and was a founding member and president of Ivybridge Bowling Club. This

tory. A tour of the WWI battlefields and cemeteries will mark 90 years since the Great Pilgrimage (pictured), which saw veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate in Ypres on 8th August, 1928. On 8th August 2018, two representatives from every branch will carry their standards along the same route in Ypres to the Menin Gate, representing an entire generation that served defending their country.

i A more detailed history of Henry Lee’s mill, along with many other topics, can be viewed on the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group website

To ensure the Ivybridge Branch is represented it needs to raise £1,000 (£500 per person) to enable its standard bearer and wreath layer to attend. To raise the money, Dermot Roberts will walk 102 miles across Dartmoor and Exmoor in six days, starting in Lynton on the 2nd April and finishing in Ivybridge on Saturday, 7th April. All monies raised up to £1,000 will go to GP90, and anything over will go to the branch. i To pledge your support, visit gofundme.com/dermotroberts

club was founded in 1923 and later became affiliated to Portals Athletic Club, enjoying a long association with Stowford Paper Mill. It remains a thriving club today. Henry John Fice Lee died on 3rd September, 1931, just eight weeks before his 70th Birthday. His businesses in Ivybridge and Yealmpton closed for the remainder of the day in respect. Outside Lloyds Bank, set into the pavement, the initials H.J.F.L serve as recognition of his significant contribution to Ivybridge.

schools n Stowford CHAMPIONS Stowford School’s year 5/6 athletics team are the new South Hams Indoor Athletics Champions. After winning the Ivybridge Learning Community indoor athletics tournament in January the team travelled to Kingsbridge to compete against five schools from the South Hams – two from the Ivybridge area and three from Kingsbridge. The team, six girls and six boys, performed incredibly well in running, jumping and throwing events to become the champions. As a result, the team travelled to the Life Centre in Plymouth on 23rd February to compete against schools representing all areas of Devon.

n Manor

AQUARIUM TRIP The children in Year 1 and 2 at Manor Primary visited the National Marine Aquarium to kick-start their ‘The Big Blue Planet’ topic. They began the day with a science workshop, where they investigated how salt water allows things

to float. This was followed by a guided tour where they learnt so many weird and wonderful facts. Seeing the starfish and sharks was certainly a highlight of the trip – and being able to get so close to the creatures, particularly in the shark tunnel, was amazing!

n The Erme BIKEABILITY Children in years 3 and 4 undertook their level 1 cycle training at The Erme. This involved starting off, pedalling and stopping, pedalling along using gears, being able to stop and being aware of other users. Children in years 5 and 6 undertook their level 2 training through Pedal Power, which

involved cycling the local streets of Ivybridge. Years 1 and 2 completed the balanceability programme. The children had a great time learning the fundamentals of balance, core stability, gross and fine motor skills and the essential confidence that comes with the process of learning a new life skill.

OUTDOOR LEARNING The outdoor learning team at Manor Primary has been busy planning and building the Bug Hotel, reports Lily, year 6. It has been filled with leaves, soil, wood chips and flower pots, and a magnifying glass has been attached to get a close up of the visitors! When Mrs Parker left the school,

she kindly gave us a bird box so that we can watch the local bird life. The team found a quiet location in our woodland area overlooking the pond. It is wired to a TV in one of our classrooms. We played a joke on Owls class, when we put a picture of a penguin inside, which surprised everybody!

every child is different, that’s why our nurseries are different... Little Orchard Montessori Nurseries aim to provide a caring, friendly environment where your child is encouraged to follow their own interests, learn at their own pace and have fun whilst doing so. We use the highly-acclaimed Montessori Method to ensure we bring out the very best in every child. Our nurseries are small enough to enable us to deliver a personal and individual approach to your child’s development, but big enough to allow your child to engage with others and learn important social skills. Our nurseries have a variety of outdoor spaces and are in great locations, enabling us to take the children on walks, trips and visits.

wellbeing n Tiffany Armitage Hypnotherapy

STRESS & ILLNESS Tiffany Armitage explains why physical illnesses are affected by stress Western medicine traditionally split the body and the mind apart for research and treatment. However, it is now more widely understood that illnesses are neither 100% in your body nor 100% in your mind. The wellness of one will have a direct impact on the wellness of the other. Research has shown, for example, that if you are anxious, illnesses tend to last longer, and have less good prognosis. Also, if you suffer a long-term illness or pain, you are two- to three-times more likely to suffer from depression. What does this means for us? When we are stressed, the par-

asypmpathetic nervous system (aka the “feed and breed”) will switch off and the sympathetic nervous system (aka the “fight and flight and depression”) will kick in. There will be a strong physical response – for example blood will be re-routed from your stomach into the arms and legs. Your heart will work harder than necessary and your immune system will power down a tad, so as to leave energy for these responses of heightened vigilance. It’s clear that long term, these physical responses may cause difficulties (IBS and high blood pressure for example), and may exacerbate pre-existing conditions (such as tinnitus, fertility issues and asthma). This is why many of my clients are recommended to see me by doctors. Hypnotherapy can help enormously to reduce stress levels, and get your body back into the healing “feed and breed” mode. If you would like to chat through how I may be able to help you, contact me via my website or call. i Call 01752 210 277 or visit

Spring is in the air and many of us are starting to think about summer. We find ourselves searching the internet and thumbing through brochures in search of a destination for our summer break. As the days tick by to our much-anticipated holiday we start making preparations. The essential sun screen is probably high on the list. You might want to treat yourself to some new beachwear and some new san-

dals perhaps. But are your feet beach ready? You might want to consider treating yourself to one of our medi pedi treatments. All the treatments include nail trimming and removal of any patches of hard skin. There are a wide range treats on our medi pedi menu. An exfoliating foot scrub followed by a relaxing foot massage, perhaps. You could add to that an intensely soft mask and finish off your feet with an application of Dr’s Remedy nail polish. Why not spoil yourself with a Prendé Orb© warm wax treatment. The wax moisturises and softens the skin while providing a therapeutic and healing effect to sore and aching feet. So, if you want to put your best foot forward on your holiday this year, give us a call.

n RICHARDSONS LEGAL SERVICES By Monica Salvioni Reeder – Operations & Client Services at Richardsons Legal Services

DO IT NOW! The new year is well under way (we are in March already!). We have left behind the Christmas lights and carnival and it is now time to sit down, nice and quiet, and ask ourselves one question: “Have we done everything to protect our loved ones after we are gone?”. Some people put this paramount question to the back of their minds. After all, they say, there is time... and, by saying that, they postpone taking the steps to protect their assets and, consequently, their children. Take a Will, for example. A Will is the first bastion of protection – it stipulates who we want to benefit and in what proportion. It also appoints guardians for our children, who could otherwise end up in foster care. A Will is a start, but it is in no way enough in a society such as ours, where people re-marry or cohabit and have children from different

relationships. So what more can we do? The best option is to consider the ultimate defence, the assets’ safety deposit box, a Home Protection Trust. Not only does it make sure that the assets in it do not need Probate and the payment of Probate fees, thus making them immediately available to those left behind, it also makes sure that your children (from a previous marriage perhaps?) will benefit from your inheritance. It will protect you against claims under the Inheritance Act 1975, for example, if your ex-spouse has not re-married, he/she can have claims on your estate, but your assets are safe in a Home Protection Trust, which is really the ultimate fortress and it also protects you from all unforeseen circumstances when you are alive. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives you a voice when you can’t speak for yourself and provides the at-

torneys with the authority to act on your behalf and fight your battles. We must bear in mind that losing mental capacity is not only a question of “marbles”. When you are having a surgery, you don’t have mental capacity and you might need attorneys to speak on your behalf should a quick decision needed to be taken.

No more procrastinating. Now is the time to do all in your power to protect yourselves and your loved ones. For further information on any of our services please contact Richardsons Legal Services on 0800 014 8031. RLS is fully regulated and insured and approved by Trading Standards

lifetime take account of the future relief that may be available upon your death. In respect of farm houses, the property must be used for agricultural purposes but, most importantly, must be of a ‘character appropriate’ to the holding. This

will take account of the size of the property and acreage of the farm. When owning land and/or a farming business it is therefore fundamental that advice is sought on estate planning to ensure that the maximum estate can pass fairly to your chosen beneficiaries.

n HOWARD & OVER By Katherine Millman – Private Client Solicitor at Howard & Over Solicitors

ESTATE PLANNING Coming from a farming family myself, I know all too well the problems that can arise in estate planning for farmers. It is such a common problem for agricultural families to find that their main, or sometimes only, asset is fundamental to the continuation of the family business and more often than not it is just one child that is undertaking all of the work in running the business. With the ever-increasing price of land and decreasing milk prices only accentuating this problem, it is no wonder that so many find succession and estate planning such a headache that they dismiss making any provision for the future at all. Of course, this is never a wise idea and there are a number of ways in which an often vast difference in division of assets can be 22

resolved. Trusts, leases, division and further legacies can all be used to mitigate the variance in gifts to your children. Another priority is to ensure that the family farm is not lost to the revenue in taxation. With Inheritance Tax being charged at a rate of 40% over the current individual threshold of £425,000 (if you own a home and are leaving to direct descendants) or £850,000 if an unused threshold can be claimed from a spouse, it is paramount to consider how Agricultural Property Relief (APR) may be claimed upon your death to relieve the tax burden. The relief considers how the farming business has been run in your lifetime and therefore it is vital to ensure your farming activities and the occupation of any properties on the farm during your

RIVER RUBBISH CLEARED

WILLS, TRUSTS & PROBATE

At the end of January, more than 60 volunteers met on the banks of the River Erme for Plastic Free Ivybridge’s first event, a river clean up. Armed with gloves, bin liners, litter pickers and plenty of energy, the volunteers, aged from 11 to ‘retired’, represented all sections of the community, united in a willingness to prevent rubbish making its way into the water ways and ultimately the beautiful South Hams’ coastline. Over 25 bin bags were filled and a host of unusual waste was removed from the river bank including a kid’s scooter, a Playstation, traffic cones and a wooden pallet. Over the coming months, PFI will be working with local schools and the community college to see how they can take steps to reduce their plastic use. The campaign is looking to engage with business leaders, too, to help promote more sustainable options compared with single-use plastics. PFI wants Ivybridge to lead the way in the South Hams in the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Coastlines campaign. i To get involved, contact Tim at plasticfreeivybridge@gmail.com or go to facebook.com/plasticfreeivybridge to find out more

TAX RETURN FACTS Apologies for not supplying an article in the last two months. We’ve been very busy with 2017 tax returns, but now that the 31st January filing deadline has passed we are able to breathe again. Hopefully, by now you have submitted your 2017 tax return and you are looking forward to preparing 2018! All joking aside, I would encourage anyone who needs to prepare a tax return to think about it as soon as the tax year is over. That way you can plan for any tax liabilities in advance, as tax isn’t due any sooner if you submit your return sooner. In fact, if you are due a refund, then that will be issued once the return is submitted. Doing things earlier also saves stress for your accountant. If you are unsure if you should be preparing a tax return, then drop me a line and we can chat about your situation.

Perhaps it’s just me, but HMRC has issued some statistics I found interesting which I thought I would share. 10.7 million people managed to submit their tax returns on time this year, but approximately 745,588 didn’t. With a £100 penalty for each of these, we can all do the maths as to what that means for the government coffers! Also, some 30,348 taxpayers left it until the last hour before submitting their tax return, a little close for my liking! If you still haven’t quite found the time to look at your 2017 tax return, you will now have a £100 automatic penalty, which can be appealed on genuine grounds (my dog ate it doesn’t count, sorry). After three months, daily penalties are levied at £10, which soon add up. Also, if any tax was due for 2016/17 that, too, should have been paid by 31st January 2018.

Then we went into the lounge and sat with the residents. We were particularly fond off Margaret, who chatted with us. After having about 10 minutes of laughter with Margaret it was B sadly time to leave.

PROMOTING IVYBRIDGE Inspired by the famous long-distance walks The Devon Coast to Coast and The Two Moors Way, which start/end in Ivybridge, the town’s council is supporting a new tourism promotion for the town. This will include a new website and town guide for Ivybridge which will go live on 1th April 2018. Printed copies of the guide will also be available from The Watermark. The aims of the new initiative include promoting Ivybridge as a destination for visitors, targeting (but not exclusive to) the outdoor and walking market, and giving Ivybridge a one-stop community website and guide which will include events, accommodation, places to eat and drink, and more. A Ivybridge rail poster in the Art Deco style (pictured) is already on display at selected stations along the Great Western train line. It was commissioned by the

We mentioned in last month’s edition of The Clay Factory Diaries that we had lots to look forward to in 2018. One of the things we touched upon was the upcoming launch of the Cinema For All scheme in the South West. It all started late last year with a phone call to see whether the scheme had any provision in the local area as we were looking for cinema equipment at the time. Usually when you hear a ‘no’ when enquiring about something you tend to leave the conversation where it is, but on this particular occasion, we decided to explain about the local area and how there might be a need for the Cinema For All scheme. A conversation started, one thing led to another and here we are. For those that don’t know, Cinema For All is the national support and development organisation for community-led cinema: community cinemas, film clubs and societies. Since 1946 they have been helping communities across the country to develop and sustain the type of film screenings they want.

It’s a great scheme that is about helping communities come together and we are pleased to officially partner with them. From 24th March their cinema equipment will be available to hire from The Clay Factory. To celebrate, we are hosting a special launch screening of The Florida Project. It is free of charge and will be a great opportunity for people to not only engage with the scheme but to see a critically-acclaimed film in a truly unique environment. As ever with a Clay Factory event, there will be drinks and nibbles provided by RedPod Food and Cinema For All will be there to answer questions on the day. Although free, it is a ticketed event so make sure you book well in advance! The Florida Project is showing on 24th March 24th, 3-6pm. To book a ticket email damon@theclayfactory.co.uk or visit theclayfactory.co.uk To find out more about Cinema For All go to cinemaforall.org.uk i theclayfactory.co.uk

news JASMYN’S CLOSE SHAVE An Ivybridge CC student has had her head shaved to support a childhood friend who was diagnosed with cancer. Year 13 student Jasmyn Lowe got rid of her hair for friend, Charlotte Barriball, who was diagnosed two years ago with precursor B lymphoblastic lymphoma – a cancer which mostly affects children and teenagers and is similar to lymphoblastic leukemia – a week after her 15th birthday. Jasmyn was adamant that ever since Charlotte chose to get rid of her hair before she started losing it through chemotherapy, she would do the same. Jasmyn underwent a “completely shaved” look at Saltash Rugby Club, all to raise money for the charity which helped Charlotte, who is now in remission, through her cancer journey, the Clic Sargent charity. To date, Jasmyn has raised an amazing £1,776.34. Jasmyn said: “Although Charlotte is well now, I know that for her, losing her hair was a big thing. So even though I shaved my hair for Charlotte, I also shaved it for all of the other people who might have felt the same way as her.

“As well as knowing that I have raised money to be able to fund CLIC for their family work, it is well... a great feeling. And let’s be honest, I don’t think I would have raised the same amount with a cake sale! “It wasn’t until I was sat in the chair that I felt the nerves myself. I was still excited though and to

have everyone there, even my brother who lives half way across the world was on FaceTime, I will admit was overwhelming and quite emotional. “I have always had long hair and so I knew that the change would be drastic, but I was so prepared and excited about it that it wasn’t all that daunting when I looked in

A large-scale study suggests that at least one in ten British adults feel stressed all the time, but a growing body of research, from

neuroscience and modern psychotherapies, is finding effective ways to manage stress. There are various techniques that can be learnt by anyone to improve how well they respond to stressful situations, and Lara and Tiffany will be introducing some of these concepts at their weekly classes. “We believe people could benefit

HARRIERS SURVIVE MUDDY CENTRAL PARK Erme Valley Harriers’ athletes turned out in force at the Westward League Cross Country fixture in Central Park, Plymouth. It had rained heavily the day before the event and conditions were very muddy. On the day, it was cold with occasional hail and slight snow. April Oakshott finished 2nd in the Under 15 girls, while Ella Isaias was 6th in the Under 13 girls’ race. Becky Lee achieved the best senior ladies result, finishing 69th. Neil Holmes, who revels in such tough conditions, had a good run in the senior men’s race to finish 33rd and 3rd vet 50. Russ Mogridge was 3rd vet in 55th place, while Ken Summers continues his dominance of the vet 65 category by obtaining maximum points again. The final cross country fixture is at Redruth on Sunday 4th March. Several athletes are in contention for a number of vet category medals and possibly a vet team award. On the road running scene, Mike Hoskin had his usual busy weekend completing two Plym Valley marathons. The first on the Saturday took him 3.18.18 and gave him 2nd place and then the following day he was a bit slower (but not by much) with a time of 3.34.48. Sarah Salt also did the double marathon, recording times of 4.35.05 and 4.55.52 respectively. Husband Dan joined her on the Sunday and recorded a time of 4.16.37. Becky Lee had a terrific run at the Newquay 10K, where she achieved a personal best time of 49.22 to come home in 273rd place, out of over 700 finishers. Paddy Trinder was 24th at the Fulfords 5 in a time of 30.40. In the Exeter Half, Alison McEwing made a return to racing after the birth of her baby and took second place in a time of 1.25.31. Just behind McEwing was Alison Thorn in 1.25.45. Dan Francis (1.39.30) and Jenny Langham (2.17.54) achieved personal best times. Arrangements are well in hand for the Harriers popular Ivybridge 10K on Saturday, 12th May. The race starts at 6.30 pm at the station car

park and finishes at Ivybridge Rugby Club. The course is relatively quick, despite the steep hill from Bittaford to Moorhaven. The last 6km of the route is almost all downhill, making for a fast second half of the race. The race has a limit of 825 and nearly 300 entries have already been received. Athletes are encouraged to enter the race early as the limit will be reached. a Plymouth-based organisation that encourages children of all abilities to get involved in sport, is organised by Dynamic Adventures who are based at Dartington and have years of experience in outdoor pursuits. Barbara King, Managing Director of The Shops at Dartington said: ‘The Mud Larks Fun Run doesn’t have to be competitive and families can complete the course at their own pace – navigating, jumping, climbing and laughing their way around.

“Each muddy warrior who embarks on the challenge will help support countless children of all abilities to get active through sport, which is not just important for health and well-being, but will put a huge smile on their faces too.” Entry for Mud Larks Fun Run starts at £20. Children must be eight years old or over. Starting times, at half hour intervals, start from 10am to 2.30pm with a maximum of 20 participants for each start time. Booking is essential. i Visit dartington.org/whats-on/event/ ?id=306598 to reserve your place
