news KYLE BE THERE ON WEST END STAGE A former Ivybridge Community College student is “living his dream” after landing a part in a hit West End musical. Kyle Turner, who is in the third year of a degree in drama, dance and singing at Urdang Academy, London, is joining the cast of Motown: The Musical playing at the Shaftesbury Theatre. Tipped as a rising star of the future, the college is excited to hear that Kyle intends to visit soon to say a personal ‘thank you’ and hopefully inspire others to follow their dreams, too.

TOWN MEETING

Ivybridge Town Council is holding its annual meeting on Monday, 16th April, at 7pm at The Watermark. The meeting is a chance for local residents to hear about the work of the council and to raise any issues or ask questions relating to the community. MILL DEVELOPMENT STARTS Work has begun at Stowford Mill to transform the historic Grade II listed paper mill into a dynamic, mixed-use development. The eight-acre mill site is being developed to provide new shops, commercial premises, houses and apartments. The work is being carried out by Burrington Estates, who have a proven track record in taking on the sensitive redevelopment of listed buildings and repurposing them for modern life, with thoughtful designs and high-quality builds. Examples of the company’s work include Dean Clarke

House in Exeter and The Ship in Plymouth. Stowford Mill closed in 2013, bringing to an end more than 200 years of paper manufacturing in Ivybridge. The new developments will see a total of 27 apartments, 36 houses, and a ‘later living complex’ of 34 apartments for the over 55s, alongside various commercial units, including a boutique hotel, restaurants, bars, cafés and retail units, interspersed with public open spaces for everyone to enjoy. HORTICULTURE FOR HOSPICE A host of local gardens will be open to the public this spring and summer to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice. They are among 25 gardens across Devon and Cornwall who are inviting you to explore beautiful gardens that will inspire and delight. With new gardens, old favourites and fascinating village walkabouts, the diverse selection of gardens, many not normally open to the public, offers a unique insight into garden planning and planting schemes.

Among the local gardens open are Gnaton Hall in Yealmpton, Lukesland in Harford, Sommerswood Lakes Garden in South Brent and the hidden garden trail in Sparkwell. news CHARITY BOWLERS Ivybridge Short Mat Bowls Club raised £800 for the Ashburton Dartmoor Search and Rescue team at its annual charity tournament. Twenty-eight teams from west Devon and east Cornwall took part in the event. Short mat bowls is popular with players of green bowls during the winter months. The Ivybridge club meets Monday and Tuesday evenings at the community college. New members are always welcome and training and equipment is available. LAW FIRMS SUPPORT WILLS WEEK Two law firms in Ivybridge will be waiving their fees for writing a Will in return for a donation to charity for a week. SW Law, at Kingsley Close, Lee Mill Industrial Estate, and Howard and Over, 61 Fore Street, Ivybridge, will write a simple Will free of charge between 16th-20th April on condition that clients make a donation to Citizens Advice South Hams. Janie Moor, CEO of Citizens Advice South Hams, says “Everyone should make sure they have a legally-valid and witnessed Will. If you die without making one,

money, property and possessions will be allocated in a way defined by law and possibly not how you would have wished. Chris Hall, a trustee at Citizens Advice South Hams, says: “We are incredibly grateful to all of the solicitors who are supporting us during Wills Week. “In England and Wales, Citizens Advice is made up of 300 small local charities that rely on grants and donations to survive. Without help like this and the trained volunteers who give so much of their time, we wouldn’t be able to continue with our vital work.”

HELP WITH ACCESSING COUNCIL SERVICES ONLINE People wishing to access South Hams District Council’s online self-serve services will be able to get help using the council’s system at a series of drop-in sessions in local towns and villages. Council tax and housing benefit have been online for some years, and the council is keen to encourage people to use all of the self-serve options that are available. “We really would encourage everyone to use our online systems,” said Cllr Simon Wright, executive member for customer first at SHDC. “We know not everyone is comfortable using online systems, so we are providing these drop-

feature THE LONDON HOTEL Around 1780, with the improvements to the road between Exeter and Plymouth, a new inn called the ‘London Inn’ was established in Ivybridge, located conveniently on the coach road at the bridge. The owner was Henry Rivers, an inn-keeper from Modbury. He was a shrewd businessman owning land and property in Ivybridge until bankruptcy in 1816 curtailed his activities. Inns at the time provided stabling, with trained hostlers or “ostlers” employed to tend to the horses. Often, fresh teams of horses would replace tired ones to enable the journey to continue. Inns also provided refreshments for passengers as well as overnight accommodation. Over time, the inns improved with the emergence of dining rooms, or “coffee rooms” as they were called, making for a more pleasurable stay. The term hotel (taken from French) was rare in England before 1800. The earliest mention can be traced to an advertisement for The Royal Clarence Hotel in Exeter in 1770. The London Inn was described as “an excellent good house... cool and pleasant with a romantic walk on the other side of the river above the bridge”, whilst the proprietor in 1830 describes his establishment as “being replete with every comfort for families... good stabling and lock-up coach houses”. During the mid-19th century the proprietor was William Mallett. He ran the business with his family

and the inn was often referred to as simply Mallett’s Hotel. When the hotel was sold in 1903, it was described as having “coffee and commercial rooms, five sitting rooms, 15 bedrooms, spacious hall and assembly rooms and a well-accustomed public bar known as the London Tap”. The latter will no doubt be remembered by locals today! In more recent times, the London Hotel was a very popular venue for all manner of social gatherings.

The ballroom was the venue for the 1st Ivybridge Scout Gang Shows in the 1940s to 50s and was also used by the Ivybridge Garden & Allotment Association for their Autumn Shows. Stowford Paper Mill patronised the hotel for company events, whilst the Dartmoor Hunt regularly met outside and used the ballroom facilities for their Hunt Ball. The Ivybridge Young Farmers used it for meetings and social events and it even served as a sports venue for Ivybridge

ANTICIPATION Members were highly entertained by area demonstrator Vivienne Thompson at the March meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club. Vivienne used a variety of unusual containers, including a basque and denim jeans, to display her beautiful, colourful flower arrangements inspired by her title ‘anticipation’. Vivienne is retiring from demonstrating later this year, and her imaginative designs and talent, as well the stories that accompany each demonstration, will certainly be missed. n Ivybridge Theatre Company SHOWTIME With only a few weeks until its Easter show, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll adapted by Suzanne Danbury, Ivybridge Theatre Company is urging people to hurry and buy their tickets for the performances on 13th-15th April at The Watermark. A show for all the family, it is a retelling of the story of Alice as she steps into a very unusual land with a mixture of lively, strange and funny characters. Tickets are £7.50 and £5 (under 15s). On Easter Sunday, 1st April, take a trip to Abbot Court Co-op in Ivybridge, where the White Rabbit and Alice will be helping the Easter Bunny hand out the Easter eggs. n Ivybridge Probus Club SPIN The club met at Wrangaton Golf Club for its monthly lunch meeting. After grace, and an excellent lunch, and best wishes to secretary Bob Mailing on his recent 80th birthday, Keith Kiddell gave details of the up-coming ladies’ lunches. The spring lunch at Hope Cove is on Wednesday, 18th April, while the Christmas lunch will be at The Moorland Garden Hotel on 11th December. The club’s annual outing to Newton Abbott races is currently being organised – details to follow. Mike Fletcher then introduced the speaker, Dr David Taylor, who talked about the art of spin, demonstrating, with great clarity and amusement, how the spinners manipulate their message. Quotations can be incomplete or taken out of context, statistics are skewed, headlines carefully distorted. Graphs and percentages can be produced which clearly distort the truth. He concluded by showing some photographs which had been ‘doctored’, often using a number of different images. This was one of the best talks the club has had in a long time and Dr Taylor received a very heartfelt round of applause.

VIOLET PINWILL Guided tours exploring the wood carvings of Violet Pinwill are being held at St Peter & St Paul Church in Ermington, on Saturday 14th April. The free tours start at 10.30am, 11.30am and 12.30pm. Violet Pinwill was a major force in woodcarving in Victorian Devon. Based in Ermington, Violet and her sisters produced beautiful work across Devon and Cornwall. St Peter & St Paul has an unrivalled body of Violet’s work, and this guided 30 minute tour, led by local architect Grant Elliott, will celebrate her career, tell her unique story and explain her beautiful woodcarvings.

VINTAGE CARS Devon Vintage Car Club is holding a display of classic and interesting cars on Sunday, 22nd April, at Endsleigh Garden Centre, 10am-1pm. People are invited to come along and walk round the beautiful, historic vehicles. Last year there was almost 100 vehicles, and the club, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, is hoping for an even greater number this time. There is no charge, but donations appreciated – monies will be shared between Ivybridge Ring and Ride and local Blood Bikes, with a contribution to Marie Curie, Endsleigh GC’s chosen charity.

POPPY PAINTING AT IVYDENE Ivydene – Painting Poppies By Abby and Jess Oldaport class at the Erme Primary School visited Ivydene to paint some clay poppies with some of the residents. It was lovely to chat to them while we painted the poppies. After we had finished painting the poppies, we had some juice and a choice of cookies. Then we went into the lounge and sat with the residents. We were particularly fond off Margaret, who chatted with us. After having about 10 minutes of Rory J Jackson is a professional laughter with Margaret it was MiB chael tribute artist who has sadly Jackson time to leave.

schools n Cornwood Primary ZOO TRIP Class 1 at Cornwood Primary School enjoyed an amazing time at Dartmoor Zoo. The children learned about different animals from around the world and got to hold a giant snail and stroked a snake. They were lucky enough to see Haylie the bear, as well as the lynx that escaped last year and terrorised Mrs Williams’ sheep.

n Erme Primary School ART DAYS Children at The Erme Primary School created a natural art form interwoven with clay during a two-day art programme. The children researched natural materials and then used them to create a mythical creature in 3D. The children used Victoria Park to inspire their creations and collect natural materials.

On the second day, the children designed their own patterns after investigating plants and animals from across the world. They then created their own tiles which they printed on a range of fabrics and paper. Parents were able to come and see their child’s work an art exhibition within each classroom.

n Yealmpton Primary ANGLO-SAXONS International storyteller and author Clive Pig (below) visited Yealmpton Primary School to inspire Year 3 and 4 children about the Anglo-Saxons! The children watched his Anglo-Saxon show, in which he shares with the children his knowledge and engaging wit on all things Anglo-Saxon! The classes then had practical workshops with Mr Pig to further develop their interest and understanding.

n Manor Primary BEACH TRIP Dormice and Robins classes at Manor Primary School took at trip to Wembury Beach. They made pebble art and forts, compared the beach and the school environments and of course made dams and paddled in the sea. It truly was a super day which inspired our learning for many days afterwards. 16

schools n Primary gym and dance PERFORMING Dancers and gymnasts from local primary schools were among 219 children from 13 schools which took part in the Ivybridge Learning Community Gym and Dance Show at Ivybridge CC. Parents, friends and family packed the community college performance hall and were enthralled by two separate performances, full of variety, colourful costumes and amazing talent in both gymnastics and dance. Twenty-one upper Key Stage 2 children from Stowford School performed their dance based on The Jungle Book and set to the music ‘I Wanna be Like You!’. The Y3 and Y4 dance club at Manor School brought jungle rhythms to the show when they performed their Tribal Dance. Twenty-six children took part in the dance, which was choreographed by Mrs Loveday. n Woodlands Park REACH FOR THE STARS Pupils from Woodlands Park Primary School spent a day building and launching rockets with the help of Mike Grocott of Space Education Adventures as the culmination of year 5/6’s space module. The children also learned how they could be involved with the space crafts of the future, with Mike emphasising the fantastic opportunities that they have in being part of the future of space exploration.

n Holbeton Primary ENVIRONMENT Children at Holbeton School are continuing their study of the natural environment in their school with the help of Gemma from the RSPB. Mothecombe class had a session focused on the habitats the school is able to offer wildlife, and head teacher Mrs Rundle’s husband came in to talk about the sort of birds the children might expect to see in our grounds.

The children then went outside to see what birds they could spot as part of the RSPB Schools Big Bird Watch, and the information will now be uploaded to help create a picture of bird life in the country. The Forest School in Holbeton woods continues to teach the children a variety of skills which would normally form lessons such as ‘woodworking’, ‘cookery’, ‘art and craft’, and ‘PE’.

Megan, the book fairy, at Stowford School Pupils and staff celebrated World Book Day at The Erme Primary School

n World Book Day FOR THE LOVE OF READING Children and staff at the area’s primary schools dressed up as their favourite character from a book as part of celebrations of World Book Day. At The Erme Primary School, the school held a giant book quiz, with older children supporting younger children in family groups across the whole school. The children also had the opportunity to share picture books across key stages, with older children reading to younger children. The children in the early years played a game of ‘guess the mystery character’ from given clues and they talked about their favourite story. Yealmpton School welcomed local author David Lawrence Jones to share their World Book Day 2018. He launched the day with a special showcase assembly for the children. He explained where his ideas come from and about his journey to becoming an author! The whole school then enjoyed creating their own stories and artwork inspired 20

This month, Abbey Road Podiatry receptionist Steve reveals his running challenge, plus shoe lacing tips for runners When I was at school I used to run a lot. Everyone must remember the cross country runs during games, but, while I used to take part and enjoy the runs, competitively I preferred sprinting. In junior school it started with the 100m and when I was in senior school 400m became my preferred distance. When I was just 14, I broke the school record during a training session. I continued running after leaving school but not competitively, just for fun. In my early 20s I was challenged by some friends to run a sub four-minute mile. Fuelled by bravado, and possibly a little alcohol, I accepted. I had to settle for a treadmill at the local gym, but I did it, just. When I finished, I collapsed in heap on the floor.

I vowed never to do anything so foolish again. They say wisdom comes with age, but I think I have missed out as I have accepted another challenge – to run a half marathon in September. This time the aim is to raise money for a good cause. I will be starting a blog to record my progress while training, which, as soon as I have set it up, I will put a link on our Facebook page. Comments of encouragement would be welcome. I’m going to need them. TIP: Tying your laces correctly can save you from blisters or callus and damaged nails. TAX YEAR ENDS WORLD BOOK DAY Fiction and non-fiction, classical and modern, fantasy and reality came together at Ivybridge Community College as students and staff celebrated World Book Day at the start of March. This year’s theme was ‘share a story’ and the celebrations started early when on 27th February, staff from all departments were ‘popping up’ to share a story at lunchtime. Like something from a CS Lewis novel, World Book Day was frozen as the Beast from the East took hold, however, the fun resumed on 9th March, ‘Ivybridge’ Book Day. It began with a celebration assembly for Year 7 highlighting the value of reading, and Miss Paton’s tutor group, dressed as the full crew from Peter Pan (above), were judged the winners of the ‘dress like a book’ fancy dress competition. Students and staff also enjoyed ‘drop everything and read’ half hour, students raced around the college finding out which characters the staff were dressed as, or which books they were reading, and there were several more ‘staff reading pop-ups’ and a ’caught reading’ competition. The extended celebrations provided both students and staff with the chance to talk about books and share their stories for no other reason than because they want to – encouraging a college-wide culture of reading for pleasure.

PROTECTIVE TRUST v WHY YOU SHOULD PROTECTION TRUST CONSIDER A WILL You will often hear solicitors praising Protective Property Trusts as a way of protecting the family home against care fees, and sometimes this is the only practical form of protection for some people. But for a more complete form of protection, particularly for retired people, a Home Protection Trust is the ultimate protection. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of trust you may ask? A Protective Property Trust is a trust in a Will and only come into effect when a person dies. It can only be used if the home is owned by two people as tenants in common, and when one dies the protection starts, but only for half the value of the home A Home Protection Trust, on the other hand, protects the whole of the home from all unforeseen eventualities and, most importantly, it protects it right away, not just after someone dies. It can also protect other assets, such as cash savings, shares and properties rented out. A Protective Property Trust can only be taken out by a couple owning their own home, but a Home Protection Trust can

be taken out by either a single person or a couple; frequently this is the case when someone is widowed and they suddenly realise that the family home is vulnerable. A Protective Property Trust in a Will usually means Probate has to be obtained twice, once on first death of a couple, and again on second death, whereas property in a Home Protection Trust does not require Probate at all, meaning it is easier and less stressful and less costly for those left behind. Property in a Home Protection Trust is protected against claims after someone dies by people who are entitled to an inheritance under the 1975 Inheritance Act, but property in a Protective Property Trust has no such protection, meaning someone, such as a child who has been left out of the Will or even an ex-spouse who has not remarried, can make a claim on the estate. According to a recent survey, almost two thirds of adults in Britain do not have a Will. The younger the age group, the less likely a person is to have a Will. Only two-in-five 45- to 55-year-wolds have one, while nearly three quarters of those over 55s have a Will. It doesn’t matter whether you’re 25 or 85, don’t own much yet, or own many assets – if you die without a Will, then the law imposes one for you by a set of rules called the ‘rules of intestacy’. These rules dictate who can deal with your possessions, property, money, and so on after you die. More importantly, they dictate who your estate will pass to. The rules lay out a strict hierarchy, starting with married and civil partners, and then blood relatives, to whom the estate will

Friends and Families of Special Children, set up in 2002 by a small group of parents who identified a gap in service provision for children with disabilities and their families in the area, is looking for people who can help spread the word about their work, as well as raise vital funds. There are a variety of volunteering opportunities, such as office-based tasks, sourcing raffle prizes, distribution of collection pots and representing the charity at events. No previous experience is required. The charity is unique in that it helps the whole family, providing activities not only for the disabled children, but also for their siblings. An educational roadshow to help inform both dog and non-dog owners about some of the dog-related issues faced by the district council is coming to Ivybridge. South Hams District Council has teamed up with Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, for a series of educational roadshows, following up their campaign to overcome dog-related issues within the district. The roadshow will be at Ivybridge Market on Thursday, 25th August, and everyone is welcome to the

SPRING IS IN THE AIR We are not going to mention snow, that would be the obvious way to start this article. Instead, we’ll start by commenting on how lovely the spring air is and how we’ve got an action-packed summer of events at The Clay Factory to get you all excited. Our events for 2018 kicked-off with our special screening of The Florida Project in conjunction with the Cinema For All launch in the South West. As part of our involvement with Cinema For All, from this month we are launching monthly film events at The Clay Factory. The events will be open to the public, but we will, in the not too distant future, also be offering a membership option, which will give people the chance to shape our community cinema programme as well as receive discounts on our activities. With spring finally with us, our attention is naturally focussing on summer and we’re pleased to announce that our first art event will be taking place from 19th May to 3rd June when we host the annual Devon Printmakers Ex-

This is the third year the exhibition has been running (after two years previously with SealeHayne) and we’ll also be hosting RedPod Arts Open Studios during this time, so this is a must for all you art enthusiasts out there. RedPod Food is also going from strength-to-strength and will be present at both the events mentioned above, meaning that you can get some top quality food when you visit us. Those of you who came to our RedPod Food Stir Up Sunday workshop will know that our chef William is a keen teacher of culinary practices, so you will be pleased to hear that he’s running his second food masterclass as RedPod Food host an ‘Ottolenghi inspired’ cooking workshop on May 20th here at The Clay Factory. For only £25 you get not only the cooking demonstration but also a two-course ‘Ottolenghi inspired’ pop up lunch. What a bargain! Ensuring everyone can enjoy Dartmoor is one of the key roles of the DNPA rangers, as Ella Briens, explains The national park authority has been working with local farmers and landowners to look at what we call our ‘key messages’. These are all highlighted issues where we offer simple and clear advice to members of the public about how best everyone can enjoy Dartmoor together and ‘love moor life’. This includes advice on litter, camping, controlling dogs and fires. As part of this campaign, we have now renewed our lambing and ground nesting bird signs that you will see across Dartmoor (below). As spring is now here this is a timely reminder to keep your dogs on leads to avoid disturbing wildlife and stock. Remember, if you do happen to come across an injured sheep, pony or cow on Dartmoor please call the livestock protection officer on 07873 587561 with a good location (including grid reference if possible) and any

markings on the animal. Most importantly, if you happen to come across a lamb which may appear to be on its own please do not pick it up. Normally, the mother isn’t too far away and will return, but again if you have any concerns call the number above. Locally, we are currently looking at erosion issues with the landowners on the open moor, together with starting to log all of the swales and uncontrolled burns that have taken place over the winter months. Moor-wide we are continuing our joint patrols with the police, assisting in the fight against rural crime. SUCCESSFUL END TO CROSS COUNTRY SEASON

The cross country season came to a conclusion at Redruth with two athletes from Erme Valley Harriers picking up awards. The series consists of six races, at Newquay, Stover (Newton Abbot), Exeter, Westward Ho!, Plymouth and Redruth. Ken Summers was 1st over 65 and Derek Green 3rd over 60, despite running only three races. In the Redruth race, Nathan Brown running in the senior men’s section was 7th overall. There was a smaller turnout than usual at the Armada Athletics Winter 3K series at Central Park, Plymouth, due to the poor weather. However, Liam Hallows (11.24) did well and was 6th overall. Ella Isaias and Carol Hansen also braved the conditions. Neil Holmes did extremely well to finish 10th in a time of 1.31.16 at the Bodmin half marathon, which includes some 2,000m of climbing. Sarah Hirons (1.48.30) was 3rd lady, while Rose Bralsford (2.09.11) and Phil Adderley (2.09.51) also ran well. There was a very good turnout at the Hameldown Hammer half marathon, a tough off-road race on Dartmoor. Several Harriers finished very close together with Anna King (2.09.28) the first Harrier home. Close behind were Rob Barnett (2.10.46), Patrick Wakeley (2.10.54), Neil Moffatt (2.10.58), Dave Church (2.16.58) and Donnicha Scollard (2.27.11). Entries for the Harriers’ popular Ivybridge 10K on Saturday, 12th May, are accumulating quickly as another 200 have been received in the last month and over 500 entries have already been received. The race limit of 825

is bound to be reached and anyone wishing to run is encouraged to enter as soon as possible. The race starts at 6.30 pm at the station car park and finishes at Ivybridge Rugby Club. The course is relatively quick, despite the steep hill from Bittaford to Moorhaven. n tennis A former Davis Cup tennis player has applauded the high standard of tennis at South Devon Tennis Centre. Danny Sapsford gave the centre a resounding thumbs-up at a special Davis Cup day held recently. During the tennis-filled day, Danny and another former Davis Cup player, Luke Milligan, were on hand to give top tips and advice to players of all standards who came from across Devon. Danny, who has competed in four grand slams, reaching the third round of Wimble-

don in 1999 before losing to Pete Sampras, said: “The competence and the technique and the overall standard of play at the club, I thought was fantastic.” Paul Butcher, director of tennis at South Devon Tennis Centre, said: “It has been a brilliant day, I cannot thank Danny and Luke enough. We have had over 100 people come to the club to take part in tennis sessions, from the juniors, the mini tennis players, our academy players and our adult club and team players. It really has been a great day.”

Luke Milligan reached the third round of Wimbledon in 1996 where he lost to Tim Henman and he played Davis Cup in the same year away to Ghana. Since retiring, Luke worked for seven years as a national coach at the LTA, working with many of the up-and-coming professionals on tour including Laura Robson and Johanna Konta. Paul Butcher added: “Every penny we raise for the club we plough back into providing and supporting the facilities here. Look out for more great events and improved programme for our juniors coming soon.”
