Lesson 23: Demonstrative pronouns

Do you remember the underlined words in the sentences below? 1. Are you sure you want this? 2. We agreed about that. 3. I’m not sure I like these. 4. Those look delicious. In Lesson 13 we talked about the use of demonstratives before a noun, for example: this dog, that idea, these songs, those curtains. That is, we talked about demonstratives used as determiners. But demonstratives can also be used without a noun following them, as you can see from sentences 1^4. In these cases, because the demonstrative replaces a noun (or noun phrase), it is called a demonstrative pronoun. For example, in sentence 1, the demonstrative pronoun this can be replacing a noun such as spaghetti or magazines. It’s easy to remember demonstrative pronouns, because there are only four of them; they are listed in Quick tip 23.1. Quick tip 23.1

There are only four demonstrative pronouns: this, that, these, and those. It might help you remember the word ‘‘demonstrative’’ if you think of these words as ‘‘demonstrating’’something, in a way, pointing to something.
