The school is in the middle of a forest and there is a small lake not far from it. There is a garden full of flowers in front of the school and a football pitch and a basketball court behind it. C _____

There are over 400 pupils in the school. Most of them are British, but there are also some who come from other countries. However, they all speak English and we all learn at least one foreign language – French, Spanish or Italian. We all wear a school uniform, which consists of a white shirt, grey skirt or trousers, and a blue cardigan or sweatshirt. We are usually quiet in class, but we can sometimes be a bit loud when we play or sing.

12

D _____ The school is actually a 17th century castle. It looks very old from the outside, but inside it’s quite modern with the latest technology. The school is huge and it’s got three floors. The classrooms and the teachers’ offices are on the ground floor. There is also a canteen, a library, a cinema, a theatre, a gym and a swimming pool on the ground floor. E _____ The students’ rooms are on the first and second floors. I share a room with my best friend, Robbie. I’ve got my own bed and desk, but we use the same wardrobe. Each student has got a computer and a very comfortable chair. There aren’t any bookshelves in our room, but there are some interesting pictures on the walls. We don’t know who the children in the pictures are, but they look a bit unusual.

Talk to a partner. What do you like and dislike about your school? What are the advantages and disadvantages of boarding schools?

2 Before you read the text look at the sentences below and try to guess if they are true or false. Discuss in groups. __________ __________ __________ __________ __________

pr om

o

1 Most boarding schools in the UK are state schools. 2 A public school in England is free. Parents don’t have to pay for it. 3 Eton is a single-sex girls’ boarding school. 4 ‘Boarders’ are students who return home at the end of each day. 5 ‘Dormitories’ are big rooms which younger pupils share with others. 3 Read the text and check your guesses.

Boarding Schools in the UK

There are about 500 boarding schools

uk a

A in the UK. Only 38 of them are state

Ed

schools and all the others (about 465 of them) are independent, which means the pupils’ parents pay for their children’s education. Independent schools are also called private schools or sometimes even public schools. However, be careful because a public school in the USA, Scotland and Australia means ‘a state school’. In England a public school is an expensive private school for children aged between 13 and 18 and lots of public schools are actually boarding schools.

B Most boarding schools in the UK are

co-educational (they teach both boys and girls), but there are also some single-sex schools (only boys’ and only girls’ schools). One of the most famous boarding schools in the UK is Eton College near Windsor, a singlesex boys’ school, which was opened in 1440 by King Henry VI. Lots of famous people were students at Eton, including nineteen British Prime Ministers and Princes William and Harry.

20

Pupils who live at the school are called

C ‘boarders’. There are ‘full boarders’

who go home only during school holidays, and ‘weekly boarders’ who return home at weekends. In some boarding schools there are also ‘day pupils’ who live with their families and go home at the end of the school day. Young boarders usually share a room with other students. These large rooms are called ‘dormitories’ and there are several beds in one room.

D Boarding schools have many advantages.

Children can have a lot of fun and make new friends from all around the world. Students who live away from their parents become more independent and they also learn how to be more responsible. However, some of them get homesick and miss their families.

Probably the most famous fictional boarding school is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from Harry Potter books series by J.K. Rowling. It is a school of magic and it is located in Hogwarts Castle, somewhere in Scotland.

Unusual Jobs

Ed

Most people have ordinary jobs that are the same all around the world. However, there is a small number of those with very unusual jobs. Let’s see what they do!

Shakeel Sheikh from Mumbai, India, is a rat catcher. Rats usually hide in holes and other dark places, so it’s not easy to catch them. Rat catchers are young men who always work at night. Each rat catcher must kill 30 rats a night, six times a week. If he doesn’t do it, he doesn’t get any money. There are about 88 million rats in Mumbai and only 44 rat catchers who kill about 400,000 rats a year. In Japan some people work as train pushers. They work from around 7 to 9 in the morning when the trains are crowded. They have to wear uniforms and white gloves.

34

Maybe you like chewing gum, but you mustn’t drop it in the street or stick it under your desk! If you do that, someone has to clean it. Gum busters remove chewing gum and the name ‘gum buster’ comes from the machine they use. You can often see scarecrows in fields, but they are never human. Well, almost never. Jamie Fox, a music student from England, has a job as a human scarecrow. He has to sit in the field all day, but he says he enjoys being outside and anyway, the job lasts only two weeks. He plays musical instruments to scare the birds away.

Starter Unit UNIT 2 If you want to eat, but don’t want to pay for it, then you can become a barbecue critic like Daniel Vaughn from Texas, USA. He eats in different restaurants and gets paid for that. It sounds like a dream job, but he has to eat lots of steaks and sausages.

There is a job even for those who don’t like working. A hotel in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is looking for ‘professional sleepers’. They have to sleep in the hotel for 35 nights and check how comfortable the rooms are. How cool is that?!

Last week Oliver and Robbie found a hole in the wardrobe in their room. They looked through it,

but the only thing they could see was a staircase. Together they went up the stairs and saw a big door. It looked quite unusual – it was blue and it had a yellow moon in the middle. There were a lot of stars around it. They tried to open the door, but it was locked. There was a big keyhole and they realized the key was huge. They knew it had to be somewhere, but they didn’t know where to look for it. The next day the boys told Lucy and Amber about their discovery. They showed them the door and Lucy suddenly remembered that Mr. Burns often carried an enormous key on his key ring. They decided to borrow it from him and find out what was there in the attic. They immediately ran down to Mr. Burns’s office and knocked on the door. He wasn’t there, but the keys were on his desk. Amber took the big key and hid it in her pocket. When they reached the secret door, Amber took out the key and gave it to Oliver. He put it in the keyhole and the door opened. They came in. There was almost nothing in the room. There weren’t any windows and there wasn’t any furniture either, except for a desk and an old projector. A few seconds later, they heard something. Everybody stopped. At first they thought there was somebody behind them. For a moment, nobody moved or said anything. However, when they turned around, there wasn’t anybody at the door. The projector started showing scenes from different films on the wall. The children sat on the floor and watched. They recognized most of the films: from old black and white movies to the latest action and science-fiction ones. However, they didn’t recognize the last scene. In it somebody read a message from a piece of paper which said: ‘Two brothers whose name was Light, look in the book – the envelope is white!’

Nowadays people all over the world can watch films on their flat-screen high-definition TVs, computers or DVDs, but things used to be quite different in the past. The history of film began in the 1890s when Thomas Edison invented the kinetoscope. However, only one person at a time could watch a film using Edison’s kinetoscope. That changed in 1895 when the Lumière brothers patented a motion picture camera-projector called the cinematograph. In the same year they showed the first public film in a café in Paris. The first films were black and white and without sound. This era was called ‘the silent film era’. However, silent films were not always silent. There was often music in them, but there wasn’t any dialogue. The first talking movie, ‘The Jazz Singer’, came out in 1927 and soon ‘the talkies’ became very popular. The first colour films appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, but it wasn’t until the mid-1960s that black-and-white films almost completely disappeared. The period between the late 1920s and the early 1960s was called ‘the Golden age of Hollywood’. Hollywood is the name of the American film industry and it is certainly the most famous film industry in the world. However, the country that produces most films today is not the USA, but India, and its film industry is called ‘Bollywood’. In the first half of the 20th century people used to watch films only at the cinema. Cinemas (or ‘movie theaters’, as they call them in the US) became very popular after World War I. When television appeared, more and more people watched movies and through them people learned about different cultures. Today the film industry is still changing. 3D technology is improving and digital projectors are replacing film projectors in cinemas across the world. And not only can we now watch better quality movies, but we can also create them! In 2015 a new smartphone app was launched which can help you make and share a short movie. And who knows what’s next? 3 Write true or false. 1 The Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph in 1895. ___________ 2 There wasn’t any sound in silent films. ___________ 3 Colour films quickly replaced black-and-white films. ___________ 4 India has the largest film industry in the world. ___________ th 5 Most people didn’t have TVs in the first half of the 20 century. ___________

1 What genre is ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’? 2 Who directed the film? Who played in it? 3 Who are the main characters? 4 What is the film about? 5 What did Oliver like and dislike about the film?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ is a fantasy film. It came out in 2001 and it was the first movie in the Harry Potter series. It is based on a novel by J.K. Rowling. Chris Columbus directed the film and Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson played the main roles. The main character is Harry Potter, a boy who finds out on his eleventh birthday that he has special powers. When he was a baby, the evil wizard Voldermort killed his parents, but Harry survived the attack. He becomes a student at Hogwarts, a boarding school for witchcraft and wizardry. Harry makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and together they try to solve a mystery of a huge three-headed dog which is guarding a secret trapdoor. I really enjoyed this film. There were a lot of exciting scenes and some of them were even frightening. The special effects were amazing and my favourite part was when Harry played Quidditch. It’s simply a fantastic film!

At 8 o’clock on Sunday Oliver and Robbie were still sleeping when a loud knock on the door woke them up. Lucy and Amber were waiting for them in front of their room. They were ready to go down to the library. The boys quickly got dressed and at 8.30 they were already looking for a book about the Lumière brothers. An hour later they were still trying to find it when suddenly a white envelope fell from one of the books that Amber was holding. She picked it up and opened it. There was a piece of paper in the envelope and it looked like a page from a diary. There was a name Peter Hitchens written on the back.

Ed

12th October 1966

I got up very early this morning. It was raining, so I decided to drive to work. While I was driving across the bridge, I saw a strange-looking man by the river. He was wearing a long black coat and a black hat. He was walking slowly and looking down at the ground. A moment later I noticed that he was carrying something in his hand. He turned around and looked up at me as I drove past. It was 3 p.m. when I left the office. It wasn’t raining any more. It was warm and the sun was shining. As I was approaching the bridge, I saw the old man in the river. He was drowning and shouting for help. I got out of the car and ran down as fast as I could. I jumped into the river and swam towards him. I caught him and pulled him out of the water. Later, when he was feeling better, he smiled at me and said: ‘I can’t swim very well. Thank you for saving my life.’ While we were talking, I saw something lying in the grass. ‘What were you doing here? And what’s this metal thing?’ I asked him. ‘It’s a metal detector,’ he explained. ‘I was looking for the lost treasure.’ ‘The lost treasure?’ I asked. He could see I didn’t understand what he was talking about, so he continued: ‘Yes, it happened here exactly 750 years ago

King Arthur

Ed

The stories of King Arthur began in the 12th century. According to legend, Arthur was the son of King Uther. However, his parents died when he was young and Merlin, a wise magician, sent Arthur to live with Sir Ector and his son Kay. At the age of fifteen Arthur became king when he managed to pull the sword out of the stone. Later, the Lady of the Lake gave him a magic sword called ‘Excalibur’. He fought in many battles and he always won because he had Excalibur. Arthur married princess Guinevere and they lived in a castle at Camelot. The best warriors of his kingdom sat at a large round table and they were known as the ‘Knights of the Round Table’. They had a lot of adventures together. One day, when King Arthur was away in France, his son Mordred took over his throne. Arthur found out what was going on and returned to Britain. While he was fighting with Mordred, Arthur dropped his sword. In the end he killed him, but he was also badly hurt. As he was dying, he told Sir Bedevere to return Excalibur to the magical lake.

Robin Hood

The stories about Robin Hood appeared in the 14th century. According to legend, he lived in Sherwood Forest with his wife Marion and his followers, the Merry Men. He wore green and carried a bow and arrow. Robin Hood was an outlaw, but he stole only from the rich and gave to the poor. Robin’s main enemies were Prince John, who was on the throne because his brother, Richard the Lionheart, was fighting in the Crusades, and the Sheriff of Nottingham, who used his power to take money from poor people. The Sheriff was always trying to catch Robin, but he never managed to do it. One day, the Sheriff held an archery competition because he knew that Robin would come. However, Robin pulled his hood over his eyes and the Sheriff didn’t recognize him. He won the first prize and escaped back into the forest. When he grew old, Robin Hood got ill and a woman who was taking care of him gave him poison instead of medicine. His best friend, Little John, tried to rescue him, but it was too late. As he was dying, Robin asked Little John to carry him to a window. He shot an arrow from the window and told Little John to bury him where the arrow fell.

Hi! I’m Jack and I’m from the United States. It’s a huge country, although it is not as big as China. There are now over 327 million people living in 50 different states of the USA. My country is a republic, which means that we have a President who lives in the White House. The currency in the US is the dollar ($). I’m an elementary school student, but my brother goes to a high school. We live in an apartment, but one day I’d like to live in a house with a big yard where I can play soccer. In my free time I go to the movies with my friends or play games on my cell phone. We sometimes go to a shopping mall. I usually wear a sweater, pants and sneakers.

Unusual Pets

Ed

Cats and dogs are the usual choices when it comes to pets. However, there are people who prefer more exotic animals. Let’s read about some very unusual pets! A ____

The capybara is a rodent, but it isn’t similar to a guinea pig or a hamster. This native South American is actually the world’s largest rodent and it is usually 1.2 metres long and weighs more than 45 kilograms. Capybaras need lots of space and they like to swim, so you need to have some kind of a swimming pool. Most people probably shouldn’t have capybaras as they need a lot of time and attention, they can be aggressive and they are quite expensive to keep.

90

B ____ Pot-bellied pigs are native to Vietnam. You can easily train them and they are quite clean. However, you should be careful as they like to eat a lot and they can grow to be quite large. Potbellies are very intelligent animals, but they aren’t for everyone. They like to be the centre of attention, and they can be aggressive, so it’s not a good pet for a family with small children. Actor George Clooney had a potbellied pig named Max for over 18 years and he was very sad when his pet died.

Starter Unit UNIT 6 C ____ Miniature donkeys aren’t tiny. They are about 90 centimetres tall and weigh between 100 and 160 kg. They are kind and lovable animals and they are great with children. Mini donkeys like company, so if you want to have this animal, you should buy at least two. They live for 25 to 35 years.

Pygmy goats are popular as pets because they are small and friendly. Like miniature donkeys, they can’t stand loneliness, so it’s best to get more than one. If you want to have a pygmy goat then make sure you have a strong fence because it can easily escape. You should also have a lot of land where pygmies can eat grass and leaves.

Gliders are probably not ideal for families with young children as they have sharp teeth and claws.

I have known my friend Stacey since we were 5 years old and we have been best friends ever since we met on the first day of school. She’s going to a different school now, so we don’t see each other every day although she says we are still best friends. We still talk on the phone and text each other a lot, but I think she’s changed. She is always talking about her new classmates and the things they do together. She keeps telling me how cool they are and about the latest phones and gadgets they’ve bought. I’m afraid that she finds me boring now and that she’ll soon find another best friend. What should I do? Read and say whose advice you agree with. Hi, Jenny! I think you should try to understand your friend. Her parents got divorced and it must be really hard for her. It’s also normal to make new friends when you start a new school, but that doesn’t mean that she finds you boring now or that the two of you can’t stay best friends. You can visit each other at weekends and maybe you can also meet her new classmates. You shouldn’t worry about it too much! Lucy, 13 Post

Hello, Jenny! I don’t think there’s anything you can do about this. When your best friend moves away they just stop being your best friend. That’s how I see it. 1 1.30 Look at the pictures below. What is happening? What are the children going to find? Read, listen and check.

On Friday after classes Oliver and Robbie went to the girls’ room. They all looked at the picture of the boy on a horse, but they couldn’t see anything unusual. Then Robbie took the picture down and they found a colourful envelope behind it. There was a letter inside the envelope. Oliver took the letter and read it out loud. Dear Mr Hitchens,

We are leaving Crescent School tomorrow and we are very sorry that we have to say goodbye to you. I would like you to know that I have been very happy in this beautiful place where I met my best friend Stephen. We were very lucky that you chose us and gave us all those puzzles and clues which we had to solve. We know that we could sometimes be too noisy and that our room was a little messy, but you were never angry with us. Everything we learned from you was useful. You encouraged us to think and discover things and it all looked like a great adventure. I will never forget the day when we found out about the secret room or that foggy winter morning when we came across this colourful envelope in the forest. I have to admit that it wasn’t easy, but we never gave up. As you already know, Stephen and I get on very well and we are going to stay friends in the future. We are taking our exams in two weeks and we are starting university in September. I’m going to study medicine and become a doctor, and Stephen is going to be a writer. I know we are going to be successful. I am looking forward to living in London, but I’m certainly going to miss this school. I am travelling to France on 21st July, but I promise I’ll visit you when I return from my holiday. Thank you for everything. Yours sincerely, William Ludlam

Common Superstitions Around the World Superstitions exist everywhere in the world and some of them are common to many different countries. For example, the number 13 is normally associated with bad luck and a lot of people believe that Friday 13th is a very unlucky day. One of the explanations for this is that Judas was 13th guest at the Last Supper and Christ was crucified on a Friday. However, for Spaniards Tuesday 13th is unlucky and for Italians it is Friday 17th. The Chinese think that the number four brings bad luck because in their language the number four sounds like the word for ‘death’. One of the most common superstitions is that you will have seven years of bad luck if you break a mirror. This belief goes back to the Romans, who thought that a person’s reflection in the mirror represented their soul and that the soul renewed itself every seven years. According to superstitions, walking under a ladder and opening an umbrella inside the house will also bring bad fortune. There are quite a few superstitions about cats. Ancient Egyptians loved them, but in the Middle Ages people started believing that black cats were associated with witches. Most Americans and Europeans think the black cat is a symbol of bad luck, but in the UK and Japan it is good luck if a black cat crosses your path.

104

Starter Unit UNIT 7 There are some objects that are supposed to bring good luck, such as a horseshoe, which you should hang over the door to keep evil away. Finding a clover with four leaves will also bring you good fortune and if you want something good to happen, cross your fingers or touch wood. The Romans believed that good spirits lived in trees and that touching anything made of wood would protect them from bad luck. 4 Read the text again and answer the questions. 1 Which days are unlucky in Italy and Spain? 2 Which number is unlucky in China? 3 According to superstition, what will happen if you break a mirror? 4 When did people start associating black cats with bad luck? 5 What should you do with a horseshoe?

Every year Crescent School organizes a traditional food festival, which takes place on the first Sunday in June. The most interesting part of the festival is a cooking competition and there are a few rules that students have to follow. First of all, only those older than 12 can cook and the younger ones vote for the best meal and decide who the winner is. 1______ Another important rule is that students must prepare only healthy food, which means they should use a lot of fruit and vegetables. They can put a little sugar in their cakes, but they mustn’t buy any sweets or fizzy drinks. Last year Oliver, Robbie, Amber and Lucy couldn’t compete because they weren’t old enough, but this year they’ve decided to take part and make a special meal. 2______ They’ve just finished the starter and they’re preparing to make the main course. Lucy:

Ok, let’s see if we’ve got everything! 3 ______ Robbie: Half a kilo. We’ve also got enough olive oil and flour, but I’m not sure about the vegetables. How many carrots are there? Oliver: About ten and we need only a few, so that’s fine. There are a lot of mushrooms and peas, but there are no onions! Amber: I’ve bought some, but they’re still in the bag. I’ll chop the onions and the garlic now. Lucy: 4______ Robbie: I’ll boil some water then!

110

Lucy: We don’t need any water, Robbie! Oliver: First we have to fry the lamb and then add the vegetables and the spices. Amber: Guys, you know this recipe is only for the main course, but we don’t know what to make for dessert. You know we mustn’t put too much sugar! What are we going to do? Lucy: I know! We’ll make a tart! Robbie: What’s a tart? Amber: 5______ Lucy: Actually, it’s a kind of a pie, and it’s usually filled with fruit or vegetables. Oliver: Let’s make the lamb stew first and we’ll think of the dessert later.
