Fulton said during this time, he was privileged to work with and learn from several remarkable higher education leaders who provided the essential leadership for the campus. “Fred Grohsmeyer organized the community to establish IU East as a regional campus. IU President John Ryan, and Chancellors Alex Schilt, Glenn Goerke, and Charlie Nelms each enriched the campus with their own visions of its future,” Fulton said. Chancellor Emeritus Fulton retired from IU East in June 2007 and remains active in the Richmond community. “Now IU East, under the leadership of Nasser Paydar, continues on this path of remarkable evolution. In the early 70s, when I joined the campus as an instructor in history and political science, IU East was struggling to establish itself as an accredited two-year institution,” Fulton said. “During the ensuing 30 years, the campus developed the programmatic, administrative and policy infrastructure and physical facilities necessary to establish itself as a full-fledged baccalaureate institution.”

Nasser Paydar Nasser Paydar was appointed IU East’s fifth chancellor in January 2009. He was the university’s interim chancellor from July 2007-December 2008. Before coming to IU East, Paydar served as vice chancellor and dean of Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus for three and a half years, where he was credited with overseeing significant growth in enrollment, faculty and programs. Paydar joined Indiana University in 1985 as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI. From 1989 to 2003, he served the School of Engineering and Technology as chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, associate dean for Graduate Programs, associate dean for Academic Programs, and executive associate dean.

as the region’s premier four-year and master’s degree public institution in eastern Indiana and western Ohio. He has also brought a record-breaking enrollment of nearly 4,000 students. Paydar’s innovative leadership and bold vision have brought unprecedented growth and success to the campus. In 2008, IU East became the first – and today remains the only – state university campus to discontinue all associate degree programs and remedial courses. By partnering with Ivy Tech Community College and differentiating missions to complement each other, IU East has created an affordable and accessible higher education system for the region. In the last four years, IU East has added more than 20 new baccalaureate programs. “Today we are being recognized both within Indiana and nationally for creating a new model for higher education that is productive, efficient and of high quality,” Paydar said. “All of this could not happen without the extraordinary team effort of our hard-working faculty and staff.”
