INTERNATIONAL THEATRE SCHOOL FESTIVAL

21 - 28 JUNE 1

Official Opening ITs 2012 The official opening for this year will be in the hands of Marietje Schaake, the Dutch representative for Education, Culture and Media in the European Parliament. Now that the Netherlands is facing heavy cuts in art and culture, cultural institutions will be increasingly turning to Brussels. As ITs will be receiving financial support from the European Committee over the next three years to set up its international programme and promote young makers’ professional careers internationally, we are very happy to have Marietje Schaake open this year’s festival. Following the opening speech you can enjoy a wonderful dance performance from Verve 12, the graduate dance company of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance from Leeds, UK. See also page 9. Welcome to the 23rd edition of ITs Festival Amsterdam, a festival that is not just an international reference point and the most up - to - date artistic benchmark for upand - coming talented performers, but also a door onto a professional career in the Netherlands or abroad. The great number of ITs performances that move on to the international stages especially, proves the over riding importance of ITs for young performing artists’ progression into international professional careers.

GET NOTICED @ ITs Festival Amsterdam 2012 Once again, Amsterdam will be flooded with young talent. From Thursday 21st - Thursday 28th June fans of the theatre, presenters, casting agencies and critics can come and acquaint themselves with a fresh wave of theatre makers during ITs, International Theatre School Festival Amsterdam. Graduating actors, directors, dancers, choreographers, mime players etc. will be taking over the Amsterdam theatres to present themselves to a wide audience. They will be taking their first steps towards success here. You can be a witness and spot

the new kings and queens of the stage from the Netherlands and abroad. ITs is presenting more than fifty different productions. In addition, there will be an intensive fringe programme with discussions, workshops and lectures. And of course there will be lots of parties! ITs Festival Amsterdam is the biggest festival of its kind in Europe, drawing over 10,000 visitors each year.

theu Boermans

Artistic Director ITs Festival Amsterdam It speaks for itself that the first years after finishing an education are crucial in determining your artistic position and developing your professional skills. These are the years during which you try to find your identity as an artist and to create a place for yourself within the professional field. Over the past

benchmark for up-and-coming talented performers thirty years the Netherlands has created an infrastructure that is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. It forms the very foundation beneath the worldwide renowned Dutch theatre, by setting up production houses, workplaces, and talent development programmes, and with help from a range of funding partners. This infrastructure, unique in the world, is being completely destroyed by the cuts enforced on the Dutch per forming arts and that is minimising the opportunities for new performing artists to get started as professionals. The alternatives

envisioned by the policy makers (such as making talent development a responsibility of the institutions that are part of the national cultural infrastructure, BIS) are in no way sufficient to solve the problems created by the cuts. Let it be clear that the under lying thought of this policy is to restrict the number of incoming new performing artists, on the assumption that this will raise standards. We must be careful not to throw out the proverbial baby with the bath water and draw too heavily on the future of the Dutch performing arts - to disastrous effect. ITs, therefore, considers it its duty to actively strive for the progression and presentation of talented young performing artists in the Netherlands, just as we have been doing for the international stages. ITs works in close collaboration with the performing arts schools, working to the best of our ability to save what we can and to try and secure the future of Dutch theatre talent.

casting day with kemna casting with a renowned actor/actress. But students from the first, second or third years are also welcome, as are other interested viewers. You will be able to pick up all the do’s and don’ts from the sidelines. Your voice is an important instrument when you are an artist. Many well-known actors regularly use their voice only, generating a substantial part of their income. You can do it, too! This is why Stemna, the Kemna Casting branch that focuses exclusively on voice actors, will also be there. So, you have graduated! What’s next? How do you land a part in a play or a movie? Kemna Casting is offering you a unique opportunity. ITs is opening the 23rd edition with a day of live casting. Led by casting director Marc van Bree and film director Job Gosschalk a number of fourth-year theatre students will be given the opportunity to go through a full casting together

Have your headshot taken by the photographer who will be present this afternoon and register with Kemna and Stemna. Oh, and networking is an important part of it, so approach that casting director or that great actor and chat with them.

Last year, Theaterzaken Via Rudolphi and ITs Festival Amsterdam introduced a new award: The Best of ITs on Tour Award. Vertreksvergunning by George Tobal and Gaan by Fleur van den Berg were selected for a tour through the Netherlands. This year we will be adding one or two performances to the list. Together, they will form a travelling festival that will be visiting no fewer than 20 theatres across the Netherlands in September and October of this year. The thea tres will include Theater Bellevue (Amsterdam), De Toneelschuur (Haarlem), LUX (Nijmegen) and Theater aan het Spui (The Hague). What a great way to start a career! Judging Panel for The Best of ITs on Tour Award: Marie-Anne Rudolphi (founder of Theaterzaken Via Rudolphi) and Maarten van der Cammen (programmer at Theater zaken Via Rudolphi).

ITs in context ACT acteursbelangen.nl ACT promotes interests. Your interests. As the trade association and pressure group for actors, ACT wants to unite all actors; in theatre, in film, and in TV. This is the only way they can improve work conditions, make a difference in terms of content, and help actors effectively with a wide range of issues. But ACT also aims to be an inspiration by organising get-togethers and setting up exchanges. Every night you will find ACT people walking around the Compagnietheater (you can recognize them by their already notorious t-shirts!). They will be able to tell you all you need to know about the benefits of joining ACT. Think discounts for theatre visits and free persona lised websites. So don’t be shy and come up and talk to them. The ACT viral will be shown in the Compagnietheater foyer. And visit www.acteursbelangen.nl.

Monday June 25th, Compagnietheater, brunch: 10.30 - 12.30, pitch: 12.30 - 14.30

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMERS BRUNCH & PITCH ITs wants to support young performing artists in their struggle to find a place for themselves within the profession. This is why ITs annually invites a wide-ranging selection of (inter)national dance and theatre presenters to come and discover talented young makers. Last year this initiative helped over 120 performances to get booked at venues in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Serbia, Iran and Turkey. And this year ITs is organising another get-together for programmers from the Netherlands and abroad. During a lovely brunch you will be able to meet your fellow programmers. And, more importantly, after the brunch you will be meeting twenty young theatre and dance makers. In five minutes they will be pitching their work to you, guaranteeing you the first pick, and allowing you to help lay the foundations for these young people’s careers. To register, professionals only, contact Jasminka Beganovic, jbeganovic@itsfestivalamsterdam.com

The dinner will be centred around networking opportunities between funding institutions and sponsors on the one hand and the latest generation of artists on the other. Entrepreneurship forms a vital part of an artist’s education these days; in addition to the financial aspects of this element, specific attention will also be focused on ways of embedding the performing arts within society. Amongst others, VSBfonds, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, SNS REAAL Fonds, ING Bank and Cultuur-Ondernemen will be present. Register now with Jetske Nolte, through productie03@itsfestivalamsterdam.com, stating your name and the school you attend. Participation for students is free, but seats are limited so be on time.

“It is important to have a transparent link from art education to professional practice. A regular confrontation with the real world during your school years helps you keep your dreams real. ITs is a link on this chain. Future and tradition, talent and experience, famous and as yet unknown; these are things that should go hand in hand. I am looking forward to introducing the audience at Theater aan het Spui to new makers such as De Hollanders, Schwalbe and the Best of ITs On Tour during the first week of October. Against the unfavourable political climate we are presenting a future - talk about realistic dreaming.” Cees Debets, general director, Theater aan het Spui, the hague, the netherlands

Wednesday June 27th, De Theaterschool, 11.00 - 12.30 warming-up, 13.30 - 16.00 workshop Gumboot & Pantsula dance

The gumboot dance (or Isicathamiya) is performed by dancers wearing Wellington boots. In South Africa these are more commonly called gumboots. The boots may be decorated with bells, shoe polish tins and rattles so that they create percussion sounds as the dancers stamp on the ground. The Pantsula became a very popular form of dance among young men and women in the townships of South Africa in the 1980s. The Pantsula dance is described as a flat footed African tapand-glide style of dance (similar to break dancing) and today is associated with the South African kwaito music. Students from the UCT School of Dance, Cape Town will share their knowledge and enthusiasm of these popular dance techniques.

Tuesday June 26th, Compagnietheater, Zuilenfoyer, 13.30 - 16.30 Salon: from ITs to Festival d’Avignon

How to develop your work within an international context? Where to start when you would like to show your performances abroad after school? Where do you get the funding? INTERNATIONAL YOUNG MAKERS IN TRANSIT The International Young Makers in Transit (IYMT), the new project of the International Young Makers’ Exchange (IYME), sends young theatre makers out into the world. IYMT is a collaboration between fifteen European theatre festivals that are keen to allow young talents and their performances to tour. Now you are performing at ITs, and the next thing you know, you might be on a stage in Bilbao, Paris, Kosovo, or Rome. In this way many talented young artists have already benefited from a unique experience at the start of their careers and built an in-

ternational network. IYMT will receive support from the European Union until at least 2013, so we are able to offer many more performances such an international tour. Would you like to take your show on tour? Apply with Jasminka Beganovic, jbeganovic@itsfestivalamsterdam.com or check out www.iyme.eu for further info.

Led by Min Hee Bervoets and Thom Stuart from The Ultimate Dance Battle

Of course you can also see international performances by young artists at ITs! They can be recognised by the IYMT logo.

MANIFESTO POETICO The Manifesto Poetico is an international theatre laboratory, directed by Carlos Garcia Estevez, and dedicated to researching new vocabularies for theatrical expression. Its starting point is the body of the actor and its impact on the space. Theatre practitioners generally regard the actor as an individual producer of signs. The spectator ‘reads’ the actors’ words

CJP Dance workshop

and actions to get an understanding of the play. We believe this view is too limited. We are searching for a theatre in which the space is the most prominent element. The space is not merely a surrounding for the actor to appear in. The exact opposite is true: the actor places himself in the service of the space. We do not want to offer the spectator a bunch of individuals attracting attention with their private actions; we want to enthrall him with a joint creation. The actors form a chorus: one ‘assembled body’ which functions as the living source from which a dynamic space emerges. In our presentation for ITs Festival Amsterdam, we will present some samples of a tragedy based on a poem by Federico Garcia Lorca. The mise-en-scène will be created by framing these fragments in the space.

Special dance workshops for owners of a CJP pass! Min Hee Bervoets and Thom Stuart, whom you will know from The Ultimate Dance Battle 2012, will be giving a modern and a classical dance workshop, respectively, on 27 June. The workshops will take two hours, after which you will be visiting the performance Dance Double Date #2 -which offers both classical ballet and modern dance- at the Doelenzaal. A background in dance is not required, just make sure you bring a good dose of enthusiasm. The fee for the workshop including a ticket to the performance amounts to € 27,50.

AFTER SHOW TALKS During the after show talks you will be allowed a look behind the scenes. Makers and performers will be discussing their fascinations, methods and dreams. Join the dialogue and find out what moves these young stars. The discussions will last about 15 minutes. You can attend them after the performances in the category Graduates in DANCE. They will be hosted by BIT-dance dramaturgy.

The revolution in Bavaria has been a great victory! The socialist republic is a fact. Anarchists are declaring Bavaria a free state and are taking the lead. But the people have no idea what to do with the renewed status. The freedom is overwhelming, the responsibility too much. The desire for a return to the old structures fires up. To quote the Rolling Stones: ‘You can’t always get what you want’. A piece of political ‘science fiction’ from 1969. Almost cut my hair DE THEATERSCHOOL, AMSTERDAMSE TONEELSCHOOL&KLEINKUNSTACADEMIE, FOURTH YEAR, AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

It’s the early seventies. The Beatles have split up, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix have died. Frank Zappa declares himself a candidate for the presidency and calls upon his generation to don a suit and tie and infiltrate the system. Growing your hair is no longer a statement, but in a world where populism is big, the media are everywhere, and cynicism is rife, we are still searching for something hidden deep inside our human souls. And that is very moving. Begin jaren zeventig. Simon is feeling useless. Then he decides to commit suicide. His suicide plans make him the ideal martyr. The intellectual, the artist and the believer all ask him to dedicate his self-sacrifice to their ideal. Simon begins to have his doubts about whether he really wants to die, but he is tempted by the idol status his dramatic choice brings with it. With singer-songwriter Eefje de Visser, director Sarah Moeremans has created a plug-and-play piece of music theatre that is full of caricature promises and absurdly twisted trains of thought.

The French Jack-of-all-trades Roland Topor created bizarre, sinister, absurd, banal and confusing worlds. These fourth-year students are flying to the farthest corners of his vast body of work to try and capture the essence of his work and life using drawings, texts and films. In this surrealist search, with its many asides and its coarse humour, they provide some insight into his struggle with identity, his panic, and the fear of being watched by another person.

DE THEATERSCHOOL, AMSTERDAMSE TONEELSCHOOL&KLEINKUNSTACADEMIE, FOURTH YEAR, AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

The School for Drama and Contemporary Music Theatre in Amsterdam provides students with knowledge, professional expertise, an understanding of their art, and personal involvement. When the main act in an ailing circus is found dead in the ring under suspicious circumstances, the circus appears to be lost forever. The remaining clowns try to solve the murder, save the circus, and come to terms with the death of their ‘family member’. Who will be able to fill the giant shoes of the alpha-clown? A tragicomedy written by the class themselves about the façade in the lives of circus artists.

Slachtoffers vallen. Een schaakspel vol macht en cynische humor.

ARTEZ HOGESCHOOL VOOR DE KUNSTEN, ARTEZ TONEELSCHOOL, FOURTH YEAR, ARNHEM, THE NETHERLANDS

Somewhere in some godforsaken corner of America, Beth and Jake’s failing marriage is bringing together two broken families. What follows is a shameless explosion of suppressed emotions and buried tensions. In A Lie of the Mind, the eight graduates are unravelling the myth of the American Dream and attacking its greatest ideal: the family. A black comedy on the barefaced surrender to violence, drink, and love.

Waiting for Godot is a classic, but the Serbian directors have drawn the absurdist drama into the here and now. A performance about friendship and loneliness, dominance and oppression, boredom and entertainment. The characters are waiting and we wait with them, while they attempt to entertain us and themselves. Surreal, daring and with a great sense of humour as the rules of the game are revealed along the way.

Damiët is in love with Esmoreit. But she believes that Esmoreit is her brother. An impossible, courtly love. In the medieval play Esmoreit everything turns out alright in the end, but in Joke Emmers’ performance it is not at all evident that they will. Emmers has taken the Esmoreit as a starting point for sharing her personal view on love and desire. A solo about faith, hope and love, but mostly about loneliness, perversity, and downfall. We are following forty people in a hotel. They have all arrived at a deciding moment in their lives. In VOOR/NA (BEFORE/AFTER), the celebrated German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig offers a compassionate description of modern man as he waits for his umpteenth business dinner, has an affair, or a bath, or disappears into a painting. The young director Lowie van Oers has zoomed in on these modest events and their overwhelming effects.

Ophelia, the main female character in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is all alone on the stage this time. Ethereal and flowing, running. At the same she holds up a mirror to the world and confuses us. She is Ophelia, but she is also the actress Lucie Koncokova, and she plays the game of credibility. Is it real, the thing we are watching, or is it just a reflection of reality? ‘One need only one look at a woman’s shape to discover that she is not intended for either too much mental or too much physical work. She pays the debt of life not by what she does but by what she suffers-by the pains of childbearing, care for the child, and by subjection to man, to whom she should be a patient and cheerful companion.’ - Arthur Schopenhauer. This is why women only have entrances. ‘Alleen al de aanblik van de vrouwelijke gestalte leert ons dat de vrouw niet geschikt is voor geestelijke of lichamelijke arbeid. De schuld van het leven lost ze niet in door handelen maar door duldzaamheid, door de weeën bij de geboorte, de zorg voor de kinderen en de onderworpenheid aan de man, voor wie ze een geduldige en opmonterende gezellin moet zijn.’ - Arthur Schopenhauer. ‘They are sitting on my sofa. They are drinking from my glasses. They are laughing really loudly. Because they themselves are the starting point of their performances. Rosa Braber and Rosalie Wammes have created DORST together: a symbiotic mix of language and images that will stir all senses. ‘Ze zitten op mijn bank. Ze drinken uit mijn glazen. Ze lachen heel hard. En ik heb koppijn.’ De opleiding tot theatraal performer daagt studenten uit buiten de lijntjes te kleuren, lef te tonen, door te zetten, kwetsbaar te

Five women are trying to cherish the present, in the hopes of retrieving eternal happiness. The young director Anna Verduin has drawn inspiration from Symbolism for this performance. This results in a confrontation between visual art and theatre.‘They appeared to lift themselves up to beckon love, and my eyes grown soft were following their every move.... I turned around and all I found was their shadows there.’ Maurice Maeterlinck

Seven people living in isolation meet each other by chance. Inevitably, they begin to form a group. Together they determine where their boundaries lie, and slowly the collective consciousness begins to take over from their individual freedom of choice. Suze Milius is fascinated with the responsibility people will take for the group they belong to. What remains of their own identity? With a keen eye for detail, she presents a physical and slow-motion miniature of society.

Based on the play Miss Julie by August Strindberg

Strindberg meets Human Planet. If Bram Jansen had not gone to drama school, he would have become a biologist. He would have studied life. With his theatre he has opted for behavioural biology. The young noblewoman Julie falls in love with one of her servants one midsummer’s night. After the scandalous adventure she commits suicide. Jansen has moulded this classic story about a dying civilisation in the shape of a nature documentary. Strindberg meets Human Planet.

A trade fair. Four days. Sleeping is taboo. The longer you go on working, the harder it is to stop. Tatiana Pratley has created a performance about how people become their jobs. About the wonders of the world of the grey suit, Powerpoint, and efficient networking. How subservient are you? When do you lose yourself? Is there a line you will not cross? An ultra-realistic musical story told with great visual power on the intimate relationship between people and their jobs. Een vakbeurs. Vier dagen. Slapen is taboe. Conceived and directed by:

An old man is sitting at a table in his room, waiting for the end. A group of men takes him outside and together they lose their way in a serene and silent location by the IJ. In a landscape of water and sky the man starts to speak. His words reach us through a headset. As his thoughts begin to disintegrate, death seems closer than ever. A poetic and intimate performance on the human battle against mortality. “The relationship between ACT festival Bilbao and ITs goes back nine years. We aim to help students develop their work within an international context, creating possibilities for them to travel around. The collaboration has opened up new doors to the contemporary European scene for all our participants, which is not just enriching to our profession; it is a necessity in these times.” Fernando Montoya, artistic director ACT Festival, Bilbao, Spain

“ITs gives us the chance to get to know a great number of interesting young artists from all over the world in only a short amount of time: it is a perfect opportunity to take a closer look at the emerging international scene, a source of inspiration for our own young programme, and a wonderful occasion to enjoy Amsterdam in summer!” Carlotta Garlanda, international programme coordinator, Short Theatre, Rome, Italy

world. All I can do is experience it; it manages to get through my filtering brain and heart and just gets inside me. “Most experiences are unsayable, they happen in a space that no word has ever entered, and more unsayable than all other things are works of art, those mysterious existences, whose life endures beside our own small, transitory life.” (Rilke, Letters to a young poet).

I’ve been here a quarter of a century, living and dancing in the Netherlands. Back in 1987, it seemed so simple: be well-trained, learn steps and go on stage. I saw dance in black and white, based firmly on physical techniques. As time passed these certainties have been challenged and even the very meaning of dance has been questioned. I have been introduced to release, impro, Alexander technique, interdisciplinarity, location theatre, text. Edges have been blurred: no longer are we sitting safely in a theatre. We’re out in the community, needing to justify our existence. And we reach out to other cultures, longing to be fed with new experiences. For me, the best dance in the last 25 years has managed to combine physicality with a rich interior

I have been fortunate enough to be able to practice dance and to continue to develop. Will this be possible in the future? Will ITs still be able to support future artists? Is the world going to be patient with these graduates? Will we still be open to new, confusing, sometimes offensive and challenging experiences? Can we let the unsayable touch us? I really hope so.

The seeking (of) F e l i x DE THEATERSCHOOL, OPLEIDING MODERNE THEATERDANS, FOURTH YEAR, AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

Attachment and detachment, two themes that gained an even deeper meaning for choreographer Liat Waysbort after her twins were born. The dancers, poised for the leap into their professional careers, are dropping their guard. With their bodies they are denoting the suggestible effects of lifelong relationships on our perception, emotions and thoughts. A powerful, fragile and very physical performance about the two poles of connectedness.
