Do we actually learn in a virtual way? In this ITLA news one of the topics that we have dedicated this edition is the type of education that uses electronic resources, which we give the name of ELECTRONIC LEARNING. First of all, we can define as electronic learning to a type of education (already mentioned before) that no in-person interaction is taken place. It is known also as a teaching-learning experience that involves or uses a wide spectrum of technologies mainly Internet (nowadays) to reach learners at a distance. Lately, in many universities around the world, e-learning is used to define a specific mode to attend a course or programmes of study where the students rarely, if ever, attend face-toface or for on-campus access to educational facilities, because they study on-line.
Other ways of learning It’s very interesting the beginnings and development of this kind of learning. We are refering that initially, we had what we can call Distance education and/or open learning, which began approximately in the middle of the 1800’s. The reason was to provide education in places that was somewhat inaccessible for people to get. It used to be more for adults to finish somehow basic studies, again, by this way adults had the chance not only to complete their studies, but also, upgrade skills and deepen training in a diversity of areas. Bigger reason that it had those times, was to study the bible, and it was in the United States where it had it’s greater impact. E-learning comes from these systems (Distance, Open Learning), because it works the same way: The teacher - student takes place in areas outside of traditional education or the common one that we still know and majorly have. A huge reason that basically involves with the importance of these types of learning is that there is a geographical distance that sometimes is even more significant than a distancing language. It establishes a new reality, which is still teaching but includes new methods and ways to reach the objectives that the student has to actually achieve learning. This means that it is bringing up new professionals that go beyond of the teachers that we commonly know. It is a goal that developed parallel to traditional education, but reaching up to a certain extent is different, but with a very important educational change. A new method that we can say it is independent, creative, paused, thoughtful, enriching, etc. There is an immense use of techniques and tools that have been used and include and keeps changing and changing....for good! It started with physical mail, then the use of radios with tapes, TV with Videos and DVD’s, jumping then in the use of Computer programs and now basically INTERNET... At this point, we have what we call and have been talking: E-LEARNING. To be honest, this has grown worldwide reaching places you don’t imagine, more and more universities and academic institutions offering this, and in the present time, it is a great way to learn; for different people to acquire the knowledge they want, having different types of necesities that particularly having to go to a classroom, conference, semanair, master with no time or maybe wanting to participate, but unable to travel, makes this a total and innovative DIFFERENCE! 9 Itla News
