Franklin Crawford’s images documents recent local history By Ar thur W hit m an

ormal portraiture, scenic nature, macro shots, artsy abstraction, alternative processes—Ithaca photography has much to offer. But one thing largely lacking in galleries is photojournalism and documentary photography with a consistent and compelling local focus. Long-time Ithacan and veteran journalist Franklin Crawford took up photography back in 2006 after receiving a simple digital camera. Since then, he has become a unique fixture of our visual culture. His work as a whole is most fully appreciated online. Between 2009 and 2016, he ran Tiny Town Times (www.tinytowntimes.com), a collaborative blog that featured his photos alongside illustration, crosswords, humor and reportage. (TTT persists on Facebook as a mainly photo affair.) His work can also be seen on Flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/frankie14850). Up through the end of the month, Crawford’s current show at Moosewood Restaurant may be his last traditional

physical exhibition. (Or it may not—consistency is rarely among his virtues.) The presentation is less make-do than in the past, with work hung throughout the eatery printed on either metal plates or stretched canvases. While this writer has a marked bias against “giclée” canvas prints, these are relatively effective—at least his more painterly images. An early series, shot in 2008 and 2009, memorializes the final years of the former Ithaca Gun factory: since its 1986 closing, a counterculture refuge and graffiti Mecca. His technically primitive shots memorably capture its mix of grime and grandeur. Following the show’s sampler approach, alas, we only get one shot. “Ithaca Gun Factory No 2: The Cake is a Lie” is a large, wide-format image, beautifully printed on metal. The composition is wonderful. Framed left and right by tall openings and a supporting pillar, continued on page 16
