Replication vs. Duplication When choosing between disc replication and duplication, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to identify the objectives of your project, as well as the differences between the two processes. Duplication is a copying method where recordable discs are placed inside a CD or DVD writer and the master data is etched into a recordable layer of the disc using a laser. This is the same process used in the disc drive of a home computer. While duplicated discs are a great way to get a small number of discs in a short amount of time, they are not always compatible with all CD and DVD players. Replication is the copying method that involves the creation of the disc itself. Polycarbonate pellets are melted onto a metal stamper containing the master data. Additional reflective and protective layers are added to ensure that each disc can be played on any CD or DVD player. While replicated discs have a higher minimum to run and take a few days longer to make, they arrive at a fraction of the cost and with 100% playability.

Bulk-delivered CD & DVD projects over 500 pieces are replicated using the same glass-mastering and stamping process as you might find with discs in your local consumer electronics store. Plus, 5-color offset printing results in the highest printing resolution available on the surface of a disc. For smaller quantities, discs are duplicated using only the highest quality CD-R’s & DVD-Rs made by Taiyo Yuden. Top that with hub-printable hi-resolution print and you’ve got a waterproof, smudgeproof CD or DVD masterpiece.

CD or DVD Master Pre-printed CD-R or DVD-R orders that do not have content will not require a master. All other masters should be submitted on a playable CD-R or DVDR. DO NOT send your only copy of a master. Send a duplicated copy. We will not be held liable for damage or loss due to fire, casualty, or negligence while the client’s materials are in our care. Test your master disc in a CD or DVD player prior to sending it. Be sure that it functions exactly the way you want the copies to function. Replication and Duplication will result in exact copies of the master. If additional features such as menus, noise reduction, or other interactive items are needed, the disc will require re-mastering and will incur additional fees and turn-times. Contact your distributor for details. WE DO NOT DUPLICATE EXPLICIT MATERIALS. If your CD or DVD has content that we feel is explicit, it will be returned to you. We accept no liability for lost time or damages incurred by our refusal of service to any client who submits explicit or questionable material. Graphic Files Graphics for each order can be submitted on CD-R, DVD-R, flash drives, or can be uploaded to our website under the FTP heading. Intellectual Property Rights Form We respect the intellectual property rights of composers, musicians, and lyricists, which is why we require every replication order be accompanied by an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) form. This form can be downloaded as a PDF at www.BuyPrintedDiscs.com. If you do not own the rights to duplicate a song, you may, in some cases, be able to obtain licensure through the Harry Fox Agency (www.HarryFox.com), ASCAP (www.ASCAP.com), or BMI (www.BMI.com). By submitting your order, you are affirming that either you are the copyright owner or you have received written permission from the copyright holder on any materials we will be copying. Distributor Purchase Order Every order to www.BuyPrintedDiscs.com must be submitted through a registered distributor. Distributors must, at a minimum, include their ASI, PPAI, SAGE, or other distributor qualifier number on the purchase order. Orders submitted without a valid distributor number will be redirected to the closest geographical distributor in that client’s area.

Tips for Creating GREAT Artwork Color and Resolution

Supporting Images

Your graphics need to be saved in “cmyk” mode. Your images should be 300dpi (dots per inch) in at least the size they are going to be reproduced. Example: If you would like a photo to cover the area of a 4.75” cd-book cover, then the photo must be at least that size at 300dpi. Images can be accepted as low as 225dpi before any pixellation is noticed. The resolution and size you originally scan or photograph your image will determine the quality of the final output of your image. Images can always be downsized in Photoshop, but images should never be upsized in Photoshop. When an images is increased from 72dpi to 300dpi in Photoshop, the quality of the image is not improved. The only noticeable change is the image now has a false reading of 300dpi. Why? When Photoshop adds resolution to an image, it tries to add false information by “guessing” from the pixels that are already there.

Be sure to include any images you may have used in constructing your design such as photos, logos, or clipart. Photos are accepted in tif, jpg, or eps. Logos should be in an eps format, or they can be in an Adobe Illustrator or Freehand format. Jpg is acceptable for photos, but the image compression must be set very low or the image will lose some of its detail. If you are not sure about your jpg settings, usually the setting that results in a much larger file is the appropriate one.

Correct Software Be sure your design is presented in an acceptable software format. Our acceptable software formats are: Mac InDesign CS3 & lower PhotoShop CS3 & lower Illustrator CS3 & lower Quark 6.0 Freehand MX Adobe PDF PC InDesign CS3 & lower PhotoShop CS3 & lower Illustrator CS3 & lower Adobe PDF We highly suggest you avoid constructing your entire layout in Photoshop. Photoshop is great with images but poor when rendering text smoothly. It is best to do your basic background or layout in Photoshop and then import that image into a program more suited for final layout to do your typesetting, such as Quark or InDesign.

CD/DVD Face Do not include the center knockout in your artwork. Bleeds are not necessary for the CD/DVD face. Please be aware that the CD or DVD face goes through a different printing process, and the colors may differ from the corresponding printed material. If you require a physical work sample of your disc, please indicate it on your PO at $125(n) for each round of proofing required.

Correct Bleeds Be sure to include at least a 1/8th inch bleed on your artwork. This simply means to extend any backgrounds or images 1/8th inch beyond the boundaries of the cut line. This will insure when you project is cut that no white edges will appear where your artwork touches the edge of the printed piece.

Type You should place your type in a margin at least 1/8th inch from the edge of your piece. Be sure to include the fonts that are used in your project. Postscript fonts have 2 files - one printer version and one screen version. True Type and Open Type fonts have only one file.
