North Iceland Highlights Discover the incredible volcanic landscape of North Iceland on this short winter break. Visit the waterfall of the Gods, see calderas and craters, explore the fumarole fields of Namaskard, and relax in the geothermal waters of Mývatn Nature Baths. Just south of the Arctic Circle, Mývatn is the ideal place to search for the northern lights dancing over the moon-like landscape.

Itinerary Speak to a Regent Iceland Specialist for more information Day 1 Reykjavík to Akureyri | Take a 45 minute flight to Akureyri from Reykjavík domestic airport and enjoy a guided tour of the North Iceland capital. Drive through the Old Town with its impressive church, head into the valleys to visit a traditional Icelandic farm and travel into the hills for superb views over the city and fjord. Spend the evening at leisure in Akureyri. If conditions are optimal, consider an optional northern lights tour after dark. Day 2 Akureyri to Lake Mývatn | Travel across volcanic North Iceland, stopping at Goðafoss – the waterfall of the Gods. Visit Dimmuborgir, a lava labyrinth formed around 2,300 years ago, and travel over the Namaskard mountain pass to Krafla caldera. Visit the explosion crater of Viti and explore the fumarole fields of Namaskard where ground water is heated by an underground magma intrusion. End the tour with a relaxing soak at Mývatn Nature Baths. After dark take a stroll to search for the aurora reflecting over the icy lake. (B)

(B) Day 4 Lake Mývatn to Akureyri | Make use of a free morning to take an optional excursion in the Mývatn area. Perhaps take a Superjeep tour to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, or if conditions permit, try cross-country skiing, snowshoe hiking or snowmobiling. Return to Akureyri by bus and spend the evening at leisure in the northern capital. (B) Day 5 Akureyri to Reykjavík | Fly back to Reykjavík or ask a Regent Iceland Specialist about adding extra time in Akureyri. The nearby ski slopes of Mt.Hliðarfjall offer good possibilities for snowboarding or alpine and cross-country skiing from December to April. (B)

Day 3 Husavik | Enjoy a day tour to the picturesque fishing village of Húsavik. En route discover the hydroelectric power station on beautiful Laxá River and visit the old turf farm and folk museum at Grenjaðarstaður. Continue to Húsavik and visit the fascinating Whale Museum which houses impressive skeletons of the giants found in local waters. Return to Mývatn and perhaps consider a
