A new record in success

College of Business graduate students competed in the 57th annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition (ICBSC), taking home five trophies - a new record for the College of Business. This year was the first time two Idaho State teams have competed in different “worlds” and, due to COVID restrictions, the competition took place entirely via Zoom.

The teams ran under the guidance of co-advisors Dawn Konicek and Alex Bolinger, professors of accounting and management respectively. The first team (pictured on the left from top to bottom, left to right), with Gary Rendek, Kelsey Breer, Nikole Layton, Patricia Schmidt, Sierra Ambrosek and Sophia Perry, created a furniture company called Metamorphic Interiors and won a trophy for Best Written Documents. Kelsey Breer, Chief Financial Officer, said that, “Early on, we struggled finding the best process to make quarterly decisions efficiently. As time went on, we found a flow that worked for us to make predictions more exact and decisions much faster.”
The second team (pictured on the right from top to bottom, left to right), with Jeff Morgan, Chase Downs, Marcus Peterson, Marisa Palermo and Courtney Ohr, created a game company named Gem Games that provided digitized cornhole boards. They won a total of three trophies for Best Written Documents, Best Presentation and RunnerUp in Overall Performance. “We faced a number of challenges such as losing a team member early on in the competition, as well as decisions that we had to adapt and learn from,” said Jeff Morgan, Chief Executive Officer. “However, in the end I think we realized these obstacles were only setbacks that ended up creating a stronger, more cohesive group by the end of the competition.”
Both teams also won a trophy for Overall Winner of the Stock Market Competition.
“I am so impressed by how well both of our teams navigated those challenges and how adept they have become at collaborating via web conferencing software,” Bolinger commented.
