Entrepreneurial Skills The Skills You Need to Build a Great Business

I

f you want to start a business, it's essential to learn the specific skills that underpin these qualities. It's also important to develop entrepreneurial skills if you're in a job role where you're expected to develop a business. Here are the 17 Entrepreneur Skills that need to do or become a successful entrepreneur. 1. The ability to manage money. Very simply, if you can’t manage money, you can’t manage a business. Do you know where your money goes each month? Do you live off less than you earn? If the answer to these questions is no, you’ll struggle to manage a business budget as well. 2. The ability to raise money. Once you can manage money, can you get more? In order to get investment, you need to not only understand where to get money, but how to convincingly make a case that your business is a good risk as well. 3. The ability to relieve stress. Stress is no laughing matter. If you allow yourself to get frustrated and upset by setbacks, you’ll struggle as an entrepreneur. Learning how to use stress to your benefit is essential. 4. The ability to be productive. This is a big topic, because there’s no one right way to be productive that works for everyone. Learn about your peak energy times, your routines, and the productivity tools that work for you in order to create your own plan for success. 5. The ability to make entrepreneur friends. According to entrepreneur Jim Rohn, ―You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.‖ So who do you want to be? Improve your odds of success by finding entrepreneur friends who will be able to understand your struggles and give you much needed insight.

6. The ability to identify strengths and weaknesses. As a business owner, you don’t need to be perfect at everything. You do, however, have to understand where you’re strong and where you’re weak. Assessing this will inform everything from the business decisions you make, to the partners you bring on, and to the employees you hire. 7. The ability to hire effective people. Speaking of hiring, this is easily one of the most important skills any entrepreneur could have. Having great people on your team will give you access to new strengths, while also building a company culture that people want to be a part of. Hiring the right people is essential to get where you want to go. 8. The ability to train new staff. When you bring on someone new, a robust on boarding process will ensure that they know what to do and not do. Not only will this help keep your company moving the correct direction, it will increase the commitment level of good employees and give you grounds to follow up on misconduct. 9. The ability to manage staff. Once you have the right people, you need to manage them well. Early on in your business’s growth, you’ll be everyone’s manager, so it pays to be effective. If you don’t already know how to manage, take the time to learn how to motivate, encourage, and develop your staff. 10. The ability to connect via social networking. Along with SEO, social networks represent a key part of any business’s marketing strategy. Not only will you need

ARTICLE 11.The ability to focus on your customers. To be clear, without customers, you have no business. Make sure all of your pitches, products, and services are focused on actual customer needs. If you don’t know what these are, research and ask questions so that you’re able to give great customer service. 12. The ability to close a sale. Letting customers know you understand their pain is important, but asking for the sale is where many entrepreneurs get stuck. If you’re nervous about this step, try enrolling in a sales workshop to learn these much-needed skills. 13. The ability to spot new trends. Business moves fast, so you’ve got to have the ability to see changes coming in your industry. Make it a point to keep up to date on new startups and the advances in technology that could be poised to disrupt your field.

14.The ability to deal with failure. No business venture is a straight line to success; knowing how to deal with ups and downs is essential. Remember that every successful person out there failed dozens of times before getting a win. Failure isn’t the end - it’s just a data point on the way to success. 15.The desire to improve your world. In the end, the best and most enduring motivation is to make a positive change in the world. When you focus your business and your success on that top priority, you’ll find yourself ready to weather any storm to meet the goal. Mr. Tanay Sarker, Dy. Manager, IST

Simulation Software Solar Pro Simulation Software Today simulation is the most widely used and accepted tool in the system analysis, research and development. That is the reason market has specific simulation software for specific task, if one has to design grid connected PV system, then there will be specific or separate simulation software for corresponding task. Solar Pro is one of the sophisticated simulation software for photovoltaic system; it is able to simulate electricity generation under different conditions that is varied by each system, so that it allows system design based on precise data, since the calculated data come out with persuasive and graphical look. Solar Pro contains many features basically; it has 3D CAD which is used to simulate shadow influence by the surrounding building and objects, so the user can set optimal setting before the installation of panel. IV cure that is calculated based on module electrical characteristics of each manufactures accurately and quickly. It also calculate the amount of power generated from the system based on the latitude, longitude and the weather conditions of the installation site, this provide precise simulation results. Four basic functions are the major parts of Solar Pro; these are shade, I-V curve, Power and Financial Analysis. Solar Pro is suitable nearly for all type of simulations for solar electric power system. Solar Pro allows figuring out solar power over arrays, to which can be employed geophysics and location of array. It also figures out various shadows on arrays precisely. Other functional characteristic are defining inverters and analysis of low coefficient, a persuasive way to get more essential data, and create graphs and reports. The program has a novel self-regulating stand tool for precise stand placement and multiple layers for electrical schematics. Solar Pro's other significant feature is the presentation, a simple use for working with animation (such as animated shadow, activated calculations etc).

Highlights of Solar Pro Import able Data - Actual measured data (CSV format) meteonorm annual data (Over 8,000 places) ,SolarGIS (TMY data), NSRDB (SUNY 10-km gridded data), TMY 3 data (1,020 places) ,METPV-11 (2012) Built-in Data - More than 30 manufacturers and 580 models ,Photon Module Data (Over 30,000 models) *Module data collected by Laplace Systems Co., Ltd. and Photon Module Data are both contained Cell Type - Mono-crystalline, Polycrystalline, Amorphous, Hybrid, HIT, CIS, CIGS Inverter - Up to 400 inverters Number of Modules - Up to 160,000 modules Max. Series-Parallel Module Number - Limitless within number of modules Creatable Objects - PV Array (Up to 400 modules for each array), House, Building, Array Area, Pyramid, Prism, Truncated Pyramid, Free Form, Tree, Polyhedron, Skyline Current version 4.3 (Version 4.4 will be released soon with few more updates ). Training Partner - Institute of Solar Technology (IST) IST is an leading institute in India for training Skilled Professionals in the field of Solar PV System . The primary aim of this Technology Partnership with M/s Laplace Systems, Japan via M/s Rogress Techno Private Limited is to aid IST, Kolkata in establishing a high quality software training on PV system design and remote monitoring software.

ARTICLE Low Solar Tariff in India

Solar power tariffs in India have plunged to a new low of Rs 2.44 per unit, continuing the free fall in the cost of green energy . The joint venture of SoftBank, Foxconn and Bharti Enterprises, won the latest auction for 500 megawatt of projects in Rajasthan. Acme Solar won 200 mw with the record low bid, while SBG Cleantech bagged 300 mw quoting one paisa higher in the latest auction in which many Indian and international firms competed intensely. Power minister Piyush Goyal, who has set very ambitious renewable energy targets and is championing the use of electric cars, said the record low bids signalled a ―green future‖ for India. Earlier February 2017, lower capital expenditure and cheaper credit had pulled down solar tariff to a new low of Rs 2.97 per unit in an auction conducted for 750 MW capacity in Rewa Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh. NTPC's lowest cost of generation from one of its old plant is around Rs 1.80 per unit, but on an average solar power prices are expected to become significantly lower than thermal power as solar generation prices fall further. A total of 5 states (Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) have around 1 GW each of solar capacity, whereas Madhya Pradesh has 840 MW. These six states put together account for about 6.9 GW of capacity and contribute to more than 75% of the total installed capacity. India’s cumulative solar capacity stands at 12,288.83 MW as of March 2017. The country installed an impressive 5,525.98 MW in 2016-17 according to MNRE. According to the list, Rajasthan and Gujarat held the top positions in the country in the last year, with solar installations crossing the 1 GW mark. Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra followed next with Andhra Pradesh ranking sixth on the list. The current year top five positions are also held by the same states; however, the order of their rankings has changed. According to the current year’s list, the top performing solar states in India are Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Why have solar tariffs in India declined so rapidly? Factors effect to rapid decline in solar tariffs: 1. Policy Factors leading to hyper-competitive market and 2. cheaper modules & low-cost debt BJP govt. (Mr. Modi) came into power in 2014, Solar has been one of the core focus area. 100 GW Solar capacity installation target by 2022. It encouraged competition which later created hyper-competitive market and lot of developers especially domestic ones, have taken the risk of quoting low tariffs with a probable intention of negotiation later on. Two factors that in all likelihood have contributed to rapid decline in solar tariffs:  Policy/Political Factors leading to hyper-competitive market  Industry-related Factors, primarily cheaper modules & low-cost debt Sources: http://www.greenworldinvestor.com, www.quora.com

Policy/Political Factors leading to hyper-competitive market Since BJP govt. (Mr. Modi) came into power in 2014, Solar has been one of the core focus area of GoI in both national and international arena alike. 100 GW Solar capacity installation target by 2022 in place of 20 GW by 2022 is prime example. In order to acheive that, competitive solar reverse auctions just like coal block auctions was thought to be the best solution to later avoid any public resistance/CAG inquires. Additionally, competitive reverse auction was thought to be friendly to retail consumers, encourage foreign investments and would bring grid parity sooner than estimated. Accordingly, as with any auction, it encouraged competition which later created hypercompetitive market (with its intrinsic nature of dark side) and with markets such as India, led to rapid decline in tariffs. Nonethless, not withstanding the dark side of auctions, lot of developers especially domestic ones, have taken the risk of quoting low tariffs with a probable intention of negotiation later on. At the same time, besides the above policy factor, variety of industryrelated factors came into picture which further justified decrease in tariffs. Industry-related Factors Cheaper Modules - YoY basis, module cost is decreasing (which itself constitute 60% of total capital cost of project). Access to cheap debt-financing/low interest rates - Term loan interest rates (10% –11% p.a.) of domestic banks/FIs are historically low being linked with the inflation. Given the world economy is at downward trend, interest rates are expected to reduce further, leading to lower capital costs and lower tariffs. Entry of large financially-strong conglomerates - Strong balance sheets, international experience and close tie-up with module supplier leading to hard negotiations on capital cost have also encouraged lower tariffs. Plug and Play models such as Solar Parks - Facilities such as transmission infrastructure, land availabiltiy and clearances which used to be the major bottlenecks. With these available upfront, Solar Park model have worked wonders in terms of attracting investments and can explain reduction in solar tariff. Strong Offtakers - NTPC, SECI etc. - Since financials of state discoms leading to payment delays have always been a cause of concern for investors, entry of NTPC/SECI as offtakers have also encouraged developers to quote lower tariffs in line with lower anticipated risks. As per Bridge to India, a solar energy consulting firm, NTPC strong credit rating have led to 13.5% tariff discount in terms of other state-level bids. Power tariffs from solar plants located in Bhadla have traditionally been low, since the region – in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district – gets the highest solar radiation in the country, thereby increasing the capacity utilisation factor of the plants. Hi, Mr. Sagaresh Samal. Why did you choose to train with Institute of Solar Technology to achieve the Galileo PV Business Management Certificate? I developed a special interest in Renewable Energy about 8 years ago after I attended a conference on Solar Energy at Hyderabad. I realized how important and crucial this topic is and wanted to educate myself in order to make a positive contribution in the sector. Through further reading and “These courses gave courses I expanded my knowledge; however, I me detail knowledge knew I still needed to learn in depth knowledge of the subject. Hydrophobic Solutions

ANNIVERSARY ISSUE : Vol. 2, No: 2

Make any Solar Panel Easy Clean Solar Panel – Amit Joshi (Shrija International, Solar Panel Cleaning solutions Provider) INDIA is on the verge of a big leap towards adopting solar as increasingly popular energy source. With close to 300 days of availability of sunlight per year, INDIA is one of the best fertile grounds for extracting the solar energy. This has opened huge opportunity for solar energy entrepreneurs and we saw quite a few big projects becoming a reality in recent years. This indeed is a good start for the solar projects and the future looks promising. Every new opportunity comes with concealed challenges. We realize the same as we move on the solar pathway. As the solar plants grow older, the owners or O&M team face a new challenge. Cleaning the solar panels was one of the major routine activities for plant owners and those O&M Teams who maintained it. The task is manageable as long as the plant is cleanable and generating rated output. Challenges and Super Hydrophobic Solutions: For plants in Megawatts, it has become a mammoth challenge in terms of time and labour required for the cleaning activity. Time is the essence of cleaning. Experts will also agree to the fact that dirty solar panels don’t produce as much power as clean panels with the loss as high as 25% to 30%. Approximately every 5% drop in generation increases the payback period by 1 year (This figure may vary depending upon the Financing structure). You should clean the panels with a stipulated interval. Super-Hydrophobic phenomenon Increase in that interval could immediately reflect into reduction in the power output and the subsequent financial pinch for the enterprise. This created concern all across. Dirty solar panels cost the enterprise money and can increase the payback time by 3 to 5 years. This concern was enough to impede the pace of solar adaptation to some extent. This was certainly a stumbling block. We at Shrija International observed the factors that were critical in getting the best output from the solar plants. We realized that urgent need of effective solution to the problem was need of the hour. Making solutions available for easy maintenance of the solar plants is our prime motto. Nanotechnology has boomed over past few years. Our focus was on developing a sustainable solution for maintaining the solar plants. After a prolonged research and experimenting, we have been able to come up with a Nanotechnology based solution, Solar Glass Shield. We have developed it in INDIA. This is tried and tested on fields and we have found that it is best suited for the varying climatic conditions all over Tropical countries. How does Solar Glass Shield work? The solution imparts Super-Hydrophobic properties to the solar panels. It forms a superthin layer of 100 to 150 nanometers of thickness on the surface of the panels (1 Micron = 1000 Nanometers). This layer is invisible to the naked eye. However, the effects can be felt immediately. The coat protects the surface from the elements and from the material which form bonding with the solar panels.

Hydrophobic Solutions

ANNIVERSARY ISSUE : Vol. 2, No: 2

Make any Solar Panel Easy Clean Solar Panel – Amit Joshi (Shrija International, Solar Panel Cleaning solutions Provider) If analyzed carefully, the bonding between the surface of the solar panels and materials is the root cause of the problems faced by all the solar plants. The material forming bonding includes soil particles, hard water marks, construction or industrial dust, metallic dust, oil particles, bird droppings, etc. Solar Glass Shield will not allow any material form bonding with the glass and settle on the solar panels. Thus as the root cause for the declining output is curbed, the panel performs to optimum level and the yield from the solar panels is consistent. The application time is less than 3 minutes. The approximate cost per Watt is less than 1 Rupee. The cleaning time is considerably reduced by 70% per panel. Added advantage is that the cleaning cycle is pushed by 30 to 40% (The field study shown the cleaning cycle pushed from 8 days to 1 to 2 months in some cases). This is added benefit and significant savings are obtained on account of reduced cleaning frequency , saving of labour cost and cleaning material also.

ANNIVERSARY ISSUE : Vol. 2, No: 2 Networking for Entrepreneurs Like it or loathe it, effective networking is one of the keys to building a successful, sustainable business. Likewise networking and influencing skills are often the difference between those who really excel, innovate and create opportunities in their chosen field, and those who are left behind.

A proven key to business success is networking – simply put, it’s just meeting other people and developing relationships with them. They may be potential leads or prospects. They may be possible vendors or providers of services. They may become friends who know someone who knows someone. Here are few benefits for business owners of getting involved in networking. Generation of referrals/Increased business This is probably the most obvious benefit and the reason most business owners decide to participate in networking activities and join networking groups. The great news is that the referrals that you get through networking are normally high quality and most of the time are even pre-qualified for you. You can then follow up on these referrals/leads and turn them into clients. So you are getting much higher quality leads from networking than other forms of marketing. The increase in business from networking is the major advantage, but there are many others as well. Opportunities With a motivated group of business owners comes an abundance of opportunities! There are always lots of opportunities that come from networking and in fact this is where the benefits of business networking are huge! Opportunities like joint ventures, client leads, partnerships, speaking and writing opportunities, business or asset sales… the list goes on, and the opportunities within networking are really endless. Just make sure you are jumping on board with the right opportunities and don’t go jumping into every opportunity that comes your way. The opportunities that you get involved in should align with your business goals/vision, otherwise you might find that you are spinning your wheels chasing after opportunity after opportunity and getting nowhere. Raising your profile Being visible and getting noticed is a big benefit of networking. Make sure you regularly attend business and social events that will help to get your face known. You can then help to build your reputation as a knowledgeable, reliable and supportive person by offering useful information or tips to people who need it. You are also more likely to get more leads and referrals as you will be the one that pops into their head when they need what you offer. Positive Influence The people that you hang around with and talk to do influence who you are and what you do, so it is important to be surrounding yourself with positive, uplifting people that help you to grow and thrive as a business owner. Networking is great for this, as business owners that are using networking are usually people that are really going for it, positive and uplifting. We can draw our Vision, Education, Objectives

Increased confidence By regularly networking, and pushing yourself to talk to people you don’t know, you will get increased confidence the more you do this. This is really important as a business owner, because your business growth is very dependent on talking to people and making connections. Networking is great for people that aren’t confident as it really pushes them to grow and learn how to make conversations and lasting connections with people they don’t know. I was certainly not confident when I started networking, in fact it completely petrified me! But as I do it more, the more confident I get and the easier it becomes, and the more benefit I get from it. Connections ―It’s not WHAT you know, but WHO you know‖. This is so true in business. If you want a really successful business, then you need to have a great source of relevant connections in your network that you can call on when you need them. Networking provides you with a great source of connections, and really opens the door to talk to highly influential people that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to easily talk to or find. It’s not just about who you are networking with directly either – that person will already have a network you can tap into as well. So ask the right questions to find out if the person you are networking with knows who you want to know Advice Having like-minded business owners to talk to also gives you the opportunity to get advice from them on all sorts of things related to your business or even your personal life and obtaining that important work-life balance. Networking is a great way to tap into advice and expertise that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to get hold of. Just make sure you are getting solid advice from the right person – someone that actually knows about what you need to know and is not just giving you their opinion on something that they have no or very little experience in. Create new avenues for your business Business models can expire. Has yours been altered to match today’s ever changing economy and technology? Networking allows you to create new avenues for your business that your original model might not have considered or allowed for. Utilizing social media to introduce your business and products can expand your client base. If you aren’t utilizing free services like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook or others, you are a step behind your competition. Create new avenues for your business Business models can expire. HYDROPONICS

HYDROPONICS FOR RURAL AND URBAN FARMING DEVELOPMENT Author: Shashank Agarwal Student of IST Howrah

I

ndia is an agricultural country and most business revolves around agricultural production. However, India also has the highest population in the world and also accounts for high rates of employment. Both in rural and urban areas there are people who struggle for work opportunities and adequate means of livelihood. Agriculture through traditional means is becoming inadequate for the people in both sectors due to conflict over land needed for agriculture and development, lack of government subsidy and training, proliferation of droughts, floods, famine, spoilage or contamination of crops by pests and microbes such as maize weevils, aphids, white flies, fungus gnats etc. People out of desperation resort to adulteration of crop yield through use of chemical dyes, silicon sprays, hormone injections such as oxytocin etc to produce cheaper food crops for market. Hence traditional agricultural practices becomes a moral issue as people who are unable to provide sufficient crop yield resort to selling contaminated food crops regardless of health issues they pose to consumers. Traditional farming also involves the use of harmful chemical pesticides such DDT and PCB, which contaminates the local environment and effects native flora and fauna through biomagnifications through contamination of the food sources at the primary level. Harmful fertilizers such as urea, when used in excess amount can leach into water bodies and lead to the development of harmful algae blooms which lead to eutrophication, which leads to the death of various aquatic organisms present. Various chemical fertilizers and pesticides leach into underground aquifers and contaminate the water present in tube wells and bore wells. The Traditional agricultural industry is also facing a lot of problems such as untrained man power, inadequate infrastructure like proper warehousing, access to shops which provide various products such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides etc. As the rate unemployment increases, the need for cheaper food crops and more productive means of agriculture increases. The demand for seeds, fertilizers and pesticides are not entirely met by farmers especially during miseries such as famine, droughts and floods as they are situated at a far distance from rural communities. New large and advance machinery such as tractors, harvesters etc are technologically advance and not repairable at local rural areas and farmers are faced with problems to obtain necessary agricultural inputs. To resolve high rates of unemployment in rural and urban sectors, conflict over land and contamination of terrestrial and aquatic environment, a new type or farming practice is required, which requires little or no land, recovers, reuses water used and can be implemented in urban and rural environment. Vertical drip hydroponics provides the cheapest and most efficient means to obtain bumper harvest, reduce foods mileage and generate employment at rural and urban sectors. This space age type of system will benefit local communities at rural and urban areas by meeting their desperate requirement for employment and adequate means of livelihood. Moreover the system uses less land, no chemical pesticides are used and it reuses the water used for irrigation, it becomes more cost

effective to implement. It also enables local entrepreneurs and agricultural graduates to prioritize and implement a cost effective means of agriculture without damaging and depleting urban and rural environment. OBJECTIVES 1. Provide local employment at rural and urban areas. 2. Reduce food mileage by implementing terrace farms and setting up of poly farms close to urban sectors. 3. Provide required inputs of seeds, fertilizers and other criteria’s. 4. Provide consultancy services regarding new agro- technologies to the farmers belonging to the rural areas and people in urban areas who want to adopt terrace garden for production of vegetable, fruits or flowers. 5. Provide services and guidance to rural and urban communities about significance of environment conservation through utilisation of soil less farming. 6. Undertake regular field visits, arrange demonstration programs and provide technical guidance regarding hydroponics to people in rural and urban communities. 7. Provide custom hired services to farmers in rural areas and rooftop farmers in urban areas. 8. Improve production and productivity of Indian agriculture without damaging the local environment and prevents the use of harmful chemicals used to produce adulterated crops. 9. Generate employment for local agricultural graduates at urban and rural areas through pH, nutritional content testing and production of liquid nutrient solution. 10. Facilitate pH testing, nutritional content analysis and NPK tests in the tank rather than the soil. 11. Enhance crop production through more superior practices than soil based crops. Due to the fact that maximum levels of nutrients which the plants requires for their growth cycle becomes available. 12. Provide precise control of nutrient uptake, which makes it possible to reap higher yields faster. 13. Reduce urbanisation by providing cost effective means employment at rural sectors 14. Reduce dependence on land for farming by providing landless multi-storey farm facilities. Thereby reducing damages done on remaining ecosystems. 15. Provide controlled environment for the production of temperate crops such as broccoli, strawberry, blue berry, black berry asparagus etc. 16. Reduce requirement of expensive tools needed for farming such as trackers, bulldozers, etc. 17. Increase production of food crops and flowering plants which have a high value in Indian market. 18. Produce medicinal crops essential for pharmaceutical companies in urban areas. 19. Prevent leaching of harmful fertilizers into the environment. 20. Reduce traffic congestion through introduction of urban farms. 21. Provide temperate food supplies immediately to local grocery stores in urban areas without using large and expensive refrigerator containers. 22. Reduce water requirement for agriculture and prevents contamination of ground water in aquifers thereby preventing water shortage in case of famine and droughts.
