RWH CONSTRUCTION

Make Your Dream Home Or Cottage A Reality Birgitta MacLeod

Low maintenance is particularly key for cottage building. — Ryan Hayter

April 2013

B

uilding your own home or cottage is dream for many. Thankfully, it’s a dream that can come true with the right builder.

Since 1975, Robert Hayter and his company RWH Construction have been designing and constructing homes and cottages. As you might expect, a lot has changed over the decades. His sons Ryan and Adam are now active in the business, which continues to grow because of its solid reputation. “These days, clients are looking for more energy efficient features than in the past,” explains Ryan. “People also want maintenance-free or low-maintenance features. A good example of a newer product is pre-finished wood siding. It has a nice cottage look but comes with a good

warranty and is low maintenance.” Low maintenance is particularly key for cottage building. After all, who wants to spend all their cottage time doing repairs and fixes. Design aesthetic is also evolving. Forget those small, dark, cramped cottage rooms. Open-concept spaces that combine living, dining and gathering spaces with kitchens are popular now. “We’re also building more outdoor living spaces, covered porches, screened kitchens and rooms,” says Ryan. RWH Construction can undertake all aspects of building your home and cottage. Unlike some firms, which sub-contract various aspects of the build, RWH does most of the work in-house. While they take on projects from big to small, their speciality is custom homes and cottages. In any year they’ll complete eight to ten custom homes. This in addition to other smaller scale design and construction projects, such as boat

houses, garages, and kitchen renovations. When you’re ready to build your dream, Ryan suggests you come with an idea of the size of project and a short list of the key features and must-have’s. You should also have a rough idea of your budget. If you know where you want to build, RWH Construction will put together the necessary permitting and variance applications as well. The advantage of site specific design is that you can make the most of the natural features of your land and take full advantage of views. You can call ahead to book an appointment, but better still, drop by their showroom in Fenelon Falls. It’s a beautiful, inspiring venue with a wide range of samples and finishes. The Heritage Design Centre is located at 13 Lindsay Street, Fenelon Falls. To book an appointment, call 705-887-4773. &

ant to get out on the water but let someone else do the work? Step aboard the Kawartha Spirit. Embark in charming Fenelon Falls and then sit back and enjoy refreshments while you cruise the Trent-Severn Waterway. For twenty five years, Captain Randy Hinton has been at the helm, taking passengers young and old through sections of the Trent-Severn system. The Kawartha Spirit cruises through the highest chamber lock on the lower Trent-Severn Waterway, past waterfalls and a limestone gorge, then journeys along the Fenelon River out onto

beautiful Sturgeon Lake. The boat then takes you up to “Millionaires Row”, the setting for many lakeside luxury homes and summer cottages. At any time of year the scenery is beautiful. You’re out on the water, the breeze is blowing and you’ll see plenty of wildlife. While you’re cruising you’ll hear about the area’s rich history and see local points of interest. If you’re a youngster on board, well, you get the special treatment. Captain Randy will let you take the wheel, sit in the captain’s chair and drive the boat for a spell. Now there’s a photo for the scrapbook. “I love being on the water!” says Captain Hinton. “I love making people laugh and bringing a smile to their face.” The family-owned business really is a family affair. The captain’s first mate is his wife, Susanne, and sons Shane and Chad are also qualified captains.

Before she was the Kawartha Spirit, the lovely lady of the lake was first christened the Miss Muskoka. The craft has served many passengers in many locales, as the Miss Niagara, the Miss Buffalo and as the Kawartha Spirit since 2003. At one time, Kawartha Lakes Boat cruises operated a second ship on Rice Lake. The Caravelle II is currently on hiatus, but with a full schedule of opportunities aboard the Kawartha Spirit, there’s plenty to see. The season for Kawartha Lakes Boat Cruises’ two-hour excursions starts midMay. During May, June, September and October, the boat takes group tours and private bookings twice a day. The 11 am excursion includes lunch. In July and August cruises depart at 11 am and 2 pm. Or you can enjoy a spectacular sunset and dinner cruise that boards at 6:15 pm and departs at 6:30 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

It’s no surprise that the Kawartha Spirit is a popular venue for weddings. The scenic backdrop of water and lakeside and a shipboard reception make for a romantic occasion to remember. Captain Hinton, however, does not perform the marriage ceremony, as he is too busy guiding the ship. Whichever cruise you choose, don’t be late…in order to meet the lock schedule all cruises depart on time. For more information about Kawartha Lake Cruises, call 705-887-9313 or visit the website, www.fenelonboatcruises.com. &

LITTLE BRITAIN

Dreams Come True Birgitta MacLeod

O

n the north shore of Lake Scugog, in Little Britain, sculptor Cathy Mark has carved a creative and successful life as an artist. Her home and studio sits on farmland that traces its history through five generations. This same farm provides the rocks that Cathy uses in many of her creations. Cathy is known for her dramatic metal and stone sculptures, many of them giving voice to her love affair with trees. It’s a particular Canadian thing, this admiration for trees and their perseverance. But long before she’d ever heard of the Group of Seven or Tom Thompson’s iconic windswept pine, little Cathy Mark was drawing trees on rocks as a pre-schooler, over and over again. From a young age she set her sights on being a professional artist. She studied art and design in British Colombia and Ontario before embarking on a winding career path that saw her work in forestry and landscape design. “Landscape design was very creative and sculptural for me,” says Cathy. And of

6

course, there were all those wonderful trees and natural elements to work with. For 20 years Cathy has fulfilled her dream, working mainly in metal for the past five years. She creates a wide range of work, from small table-top pieces to large wall hanging pieces and commissions. Recently her work has become more and more detailed. Like many artists, she likes to challenge herself and feels the constant desire to create, to do something new. Her work is very physical and she loves that. She also gets satisfaction from being

able to finish a piece in a timely manner. There’s no time to get bored. “There’s a huge range in what you can do. I have about 5,000 things lodged in my brain that I want to make. I’ll be happy for years to come,” she says. Cathy’s newest projects combine her metal work with her husband’s woodworking. The pieces combine the rich beauty of wood burls with metal and rock. You can visit Cathy’s studio during the Lake Scugog Studio tour, May 4 and 5. This is the fourteen year for the annual spring tour. It’s an opportunity to visit artists in their studios, to talk and explore the creative process with them. And to shop of course. Cathy has been a part of the tour for many years and her studio is a key stop along the northern route of the tour. You can pick up a studio tour brochure at various community centres and shops, or visit the website www.scugogstudiotour.ca. &

COTTAGE RENTAL

Affordable And Easy Entry Into Cottage Living Birgitta MacLeod

R

emember the story of the little red hen? She found some seeds and asked for help with the planting, harvesting, grinding and baking and none of the other animals would help her. When it came time to eat the bread everyone wanted a piece of the action but the little red said no way, and refused to share her hard-earned reward. Thankfully, there are plenty of folks out there happy to share their hard-earned cottage rewards. For people looking to rent a cottage, for a season, a week or a weekend there are plenty of options. Renting a cottage is affordable, family friendly and, if you’re thinking of taking the plunge into cottage ownership, a terrific way to get the lay of the land and try before you buy. You can rent a family-owned cottage and deal directly with the owners, rent through an agency, or rent a cottage in a resort style setting. A housekeeping cottage that’s part of a larger facility is an excellent introduction to cottage living. There are usually more booking options – you can rent for night or a weekend for example, and there is someone on-site during your stay in case you need anything. In Kawartha, Pinewood Cottages is family friendly property that is newly renovated after decades of welcoming cottage renters. “We provide absolutely everything that you need. You just need to bring your food and clothes,” say owners Rene and Suzanne Lavigne. There are games, swings, a safe beach for swimming and a central firepit for all the cottages. You can bring a boat for fishing. “There’s no TV or air conditioning but the kids play outside. They can play badminton, volleyball and there are bicycles you can borrow.” 8

April 2013

Resorts such as this make an ideal setting for a multi-family holiday. Each family gets their own cottage for a bit of privacy and the central amenities and sense of community means you’ll never hear “I’m bored!” If your list of cottage must-haves is a little more extensive, or you’re looking for some more privacy and quiet time, you can surf the web and find hundreds of possibilities among the private rentals available. There are websites devoted to cottage rentals, such as cottagesincanada.com and you can find listings in kijiji. For more than fourteen years, James and Vicky Georgopolous have been renting their family cottages to other families and couples. “Everything’s there,” says George. “It’s our own cottage and guests use our things. We just ask that you treat it like it was your own.” With any private rental you’ll want to check to see what’s included and what you need to bring. More than likely you’ll need to bring your own sheets, bed linens and towels, or be willing to pay an extra fee. There are also strict check-in and check-out times so that the owners can clean the cottage between bookings. The Georgopolous family includes the cleaning as part of the rental fee but in many cases there is an extra charge. Private rentals will require a deposit, paid by cash or cheque at the time of booking, and the final payment before you arrive. James and Vicky get many repeat renters, have hosted weddings, and welcomed people from across Ontario to the Kawarthas. Renting privately does require a bit of time. You’ll want to connect with the owners and work out the details. If you’d like to speed up the process a bit, you might consider renting through an agency such as Cottage Country Travel Services. The business maintains a roster of more than 200 cottages that includes simple two-bedroom lakeside charmers to five-bedroom luxury abodes. Each cottage has been personally inspected and a central booking process means you can use your credit card for payment. Jan Field and Blain Taylor started Cottage Country Rentals twenty five years ago, long before the age of internet surfing. The booking process has change dramatically in April 2013

that time. In the early days, renters would have to book an appointment to arrange a rental. Cottage tours were recorded on tape. “After seventeen years of showing VHS videos we know what consumers want,” says Jan. The process is a lot more efficient now, with hundreds of photos available on-line and a custom search feature. “We’ve personally toured all the properties. The photos and descriptions are ours. We’re very honest and objective with our descriptions,” explains Jan. The business

great selection of quality live entertainment is an easy reminder that Kawartha offers the best of both worlds. You can step outside your door and meet nature face to face, or you can go for a short drive and take in a world class, award -winning performance.

April 2013

Here’s a sampling of just a few diversions waiting for you this spring in Kawartha. In Lindsay the Academy Theatre has been welcoming audiences since 1892. This spring’s line-up includes Beatlemania Revisited on April 13 and The Vagina Monologues on April 26. Beatlemania Revisited is a new, international touring show that captures the look, sound and excitement of 'The Beatles' live in concert, complete with full costumes and vintage instruments and equipment. Starting with their 1964 appearance on the Ed Sullivan television show, the night includes over thirty Beatles hits. The award-winning Vagina Monologues, written by Eve Ensler, features a variety pack of wildly divergent female voices, from young to old, discussing aspects of the female experience. This entertaining evening is a fundraiser for the Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre. The theatre welcomes virtuoso guitarist Scott Szeryk on May 4. One of Canada’s hottest rising stars, Szeryk is considered “the guitarists’ guitarist”. He released Guitar Manifesto in January 2012 and is now touring North America. Lovers of Broadway musicals won’t want to miss Michael Burgess and Rebecca Caine on May 5. Two of Canada’s most luminous performing artists, Burgess and Caine will fill the night with music from both classic and contemporary Broadway. Tickets are expected to sell quickly for this event. For a unique theatre experience you can’t beat the 4th Line Theatre. Under the direction of Robert Winslow the 4th Line Theatre presents Canadian plays, written by and about Canadians, in an outdoor theatre on the Winslow farm. The first performance of the 2013 season will be The Winslows of Derryvore, described as “an epic tale of romance and adventure set in 17th century Ireland” Winslow based the pay on his family history and its part in the 1641 Irish Rebellion. With a large cast of 60, the play promises to depict epic battles, music, storytelling and song. The Winslows of Derryvore runs from July 2 to 27. In August, 4th Line presents The Real McCoy, by Andrew Moodie. The play was inspired by the true life story of Elijah McCoy, an extraordinary inventor, born in Canada to runaway slaves, who became a leading expert in the field of thermodynamics. McCoy lived and worked at a time when the business and education communities made it very difficult for this brilliant black inventor to achieve success. Although his life was marred by tragedy, he patented more than 50 inventions and, you guessed it, gave rise the expression “the real McCoy”. The play runs from August 5 to 24. On a smaller scale, there are many other quaint, wonderful, and professional theatre opportunities throughout Kawartha. This spring the Lindsay Little Theatre will present Clothes Encounters April 12, 13, 19 & 20 and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde on May 3, 4, 10 & 11. Just outside of Bobcaygeon, the Lakeview Arts Barn is the home of Globus Theatre. The company produces several plays each summer. The 2013 season kicks off with The Hound of the Baskervilles, running June 26 to July 6th. &

Lakeshore Designs Birgitta MacLeod

We do all the work and set it all up and when the client comes home it’s all done. It’s like Extreme Makeover. — Angela Jones

T

hey say a change is as good as a rest. If you look up from reading this only to gaze at a tired looking room, or perhaps a whole house or cottage in need of a make-over, Lakeshore Designs of Peterborough can cure what ails your abode. The full-service design and renovation business can transform a small space, help you choose paint colours, or renovate your entire cottage or home. When the project is done and you feel like celebrating, they’ll even organize and decorate for a party or special event for you. 14

Angela Jones leads the creative team at Lakeshore Designs. She’s been a designer for more than ten years. “My favourite project is a whole cottage makeover,” says Angela. Interior design work starts with a consultation that may take one or two hours. The designer tours your home or cottage, uncovering your likes and dislikes, finding out about your lifestyle and needs. Then the creative process begins. Clients see drawings and full visuals, colour samples, fabrics and more so they can compare the “after” to the “before”. Once approved, the work begins. Angela and Lakeshore Designs have built

a solid reputation in Kawartha for creative, quality work. When Elton John performed in Peterborough in 2012, it was Angela who transformed a dingy locker room into an elegant lounge for the international star. Lakeshore Designs was also selected to design the dream home model at the 2013 Cottage Life Show in Toronto. “It’s a lot of hours of work and preparation but I’m really excited about this project,” says Angela. The show runs April 5, 6 & 7 at the International Centre in Toronto. For a little more inspiration close to home, you can drop by the studio and showroom at 427 George Street North in Peterborough. & April 2013

KAWARTHAS

Kawartha Country Wines

Birgitta MacLeod

I

f it grows in Ontario, you can make wine out of it. Well, almost. As John Rufa of Kawartha Country Wines will explain, some berries just don’t play well with others. Ontario’s wine industry is a growing force here at home and around the world and among its fine offerings, fruit wines are gaining in popularity and reputation. Here in Kawartha, the award winning Kawartha Country Wines has been fermenting and bottling its delicious concoctions since 2004 with retired teacher John Rufa at the helm. Now, if you’re of a certain age you might have some vague, unpleasant memories of fruit wines. If you’re thinking sweet, soda-pop like wines from the 70’s, time to think again. Today’s fruit wines are much more

16

April 2013

sophisticated, many of them dry or off dry and ready to hold their own against their grape-based cousins. Kawartha Country Wines has one of the largest selections of different wines, using various fruits and berries, in the province. There are thirty to forty different offerings, all developed and tested by John. Some are blends of different fruits, including grapes, but all contain Ontario-grown fruit. “Once you experiment you learn that each fruit is different and each requires its own recipes and procedures,” says John. “Anyone can make wine but making wine someone wants to buy is the real challenge, “he adds. It’s a challenge he has embraced with enthusiasm and some sense of adventure. It often starts in the kitchen, chopping fruit and testing small batches. It doesn’t always result in a winner “Customers were telling us they wanted chokecherry wine. So a farmer brought us

thirty or forty pounds of chokecherries. I made a small test batch and it was awful. I tried again and it was still bad. I tried three or four batches and none were acceptable.” Of course sometimes it all works out. After a trip to southern Italy John and his wife Trish Dougherty decided that limoncello would make a delightful addition to the roster. “We hand squeezed the lemons and zested the lemons by hand and the first test batch was pretty good. After the second and third batch we had it right.” The limoncello is made with Ontario plums and is now one of their top sellers. Among the other favourites are rhubarb, popular right from the get-go, elderberry, blackcurrant, raspberry and strawberry. John particularly likes the red current and also the elderberry, because it’s well balanced, pleasing on the palate and can take the place of a traditional red wine when served with roasted and grilled meats.

At Kawartha Country Wines you can belly up to the bar and taste any of the available wines, free of charge. It’s the best way introduce yourself to fruit wines or try something unique. You might, for instance try the shiro plum, apple, or wild rice, made from wild rice grown at Curve Lake. Kawartha Country Wines is the only place in Canada where you can try goldenrod wine, made from the young petals of the goldenrod plant. “It tastes like late harvest Riesling,” says John. The tasting room and shop are housed in restored log cabin built in 1866. Along with the wines, there are dozens and dozens of home-make jams, jellies, preserves and vinegars. It’s a tasty little day trip available year-round. Kawartha Country Wines is located at 2275 County Road 36 between Buckhorn and Bobcaygeon. The tasting room and shop are open year-round, seven days a week. &

ould you buy a painting if you didn’t know the artists name? Many people would, and the Lindsay Gallery has turned mystery into money for the past seven years selling anonymous works through its Canvas Confidential fundraiser. It’s a fun, fast paced event that features the works of approximately eighty local artists and artist members of the gallery. Each

The results are displayed from April 23 to 25 in the Lindsay Gallery then, starting at 7 pm on the 25th the fun begins. For thirty dollars you buy a ticket and when your number is called you can choose any painting. You’ll only find out who the artist is after you choose, when you turn it over and read the signature and artist bio. There are many recognizable local names, including Jean Telford-Rahme, Sandra Ackeart, Bruce Young, Jay McCarten and Debra Tate-Sears among the dozens of painters this year. But does it matter? You’ll be choosing based on the painting, not the painter. The fundraiser is one of many projects that help fund the gallery, which is self-supporting. Events like this raise approximately $70,000 each year to pay for gallery activities. The gallery holds a permanent collection, but for many patrons the feature exhibits are what draws them to repeat visits. From March 26 to April 20, photographer Jonathan Van Bilsen exhibits a collection of images shot around the world in an exhibit entitled World of Paradox. During more than 35 years of travel, Jonathan has travelled to 86 countries and six continents. Being the generous type, and possibly inspired by the Canvas Confidential event, Jonathan is offering one lucky visitor the chance to take a piece home. You can purchase a ticket and if yours is drawn, you win one of the twenty-nine pieces on display. The images in the show are from many far flung places on the globe, from the Yukon and Alaska to India, Bosnia, Easter Island, the Galapagos, Spain and Newfoundland. Jonathan is delighted to be featured at the gallery. “Of all the exhibitions I’ve done, the folks in Lindsay are among the best. They’re so organized; they’re amazing to work with,” he says. Jonathan will be the guest speaker at the Lindsay Gallery’s annual Marie Porter Memorial Dinner Lecture on Thursday, April 4. Tickets are $60 for the dinner that takes place at Hobart’s Steakhouse. The Lindsay Gallery is located on the second floor of the Lindsay Library, at 190 Kent Street West. It’s a busy place, thanks to the efforts of more than seventy-five active volunteers, who assist the lone paid staff person.
