SEMINAR DIRECTOR Ms. Marcia Richards

W

elcome to SMS2012! Let me first say how excited I am that you have taken the time to invest in yourself. With the excitement and jubilation that our Jamaica 50th celebration have brought, we felt that it was only fitting that we continue with the Jamaica 50 theme – ‘ON A MISSION’ . I must say that planning a seminar of this calibre is no easy task, so on behalf of Sagicor I would like to extend my gratitude to the SMS2012 Committee who made it their mission to ensure we provide a world class seminar. There were so many times that I was literally moved to tears just seeing how passionate they were and how freely they gave of their time, I have the utmost respect for each of you. Like our theme, our speakers were carefully selected and brings not only a wealth of experience in sales and personal development but also varying years of proven excellence; from young professionals to seasoned financial advisors to an Olympic star to an award winning actress, I am positive that mission SMS2012 will deliver as promised. Again, I am especially proud of our charity this year for providing some well needed assistance to the Best Care Foundation. Your donations and assistance helped greatly in executing this project. W e say thank you on behalf of the children and staf f at Best Care.

Our mission is set – prepare to be engulfed by our hard-hitting motivational sessions, our fun evening activities and of course our top notch nightly entertainment. I am truly humbled to have been given the opportunity to serve you, thank you.

et me again congratulate the Production Club on the staging of our Annual Motivational Seminar.

Only a few weeks ago, we were reminded of the breadth and depth of the talents and skills that abound in this “likkle but tallawah” Jamaica, as we watched our athletes perform at the London Olympics. The story of Sagicor Life ( formerly Life of J amaica) is no different. We set out forty-two years ago on a mission to build a successful company and to play a meaningful role in the development of our country. This was to be achieved through the training and development of our associates to become world-class in all areas of the business and by the prudent investment of our funds. As we look back we can say. We have made great strides towards accomplishing our objectives, for our associates in Sagicor and in our subsidiary company , Pan C aribbean, have demonstrated that they are indeed comprehensively world-class. We can be proud too that our resources have been invested in a prudent manner and have consequently helped to create a bet ter life for many J amaicans. W e have also in the process been able to build signif icant value for our shareholders. The job however is not done. Indeed it can never be completed, for our mission will always be to improve the quality of life of our employees and the wider community. W e must therefore continue pursuing our careers with industry , intelligence, integrity and con stant adherence to best practices, always keeping in mind our responsibility to our communities and our nation. Let us lead the way as we continue our mission. I do hope that the conference will be a great success and that everyone will leave feeling renewed and invigorated.

PRESIDENT & CEO Mr. Richard Byles

T

he SMS2012 committee has once again exceeded our expectations by producing another worldclass seminar . Congratulations to Seminar Director Marcia Richards, Chairman of the Production Club Albert L yon and the rest of the 2012 Sagicor motivational seminar committee for a job well done! This year’s Seminar theme, “On a Mission” is very timely, especially in light of the on-going dif ficulties in the local and global economies. It is an excellent opportunity for us to have a look at the direction of our own lives, our families, our communities and the Sagicor Jamaica Group. Adopting the mantra of “on a mission” will ensure that we remain on the cuttingedge as we strive to be our clients ’ preferred choice for financial services. In J uly of this year Sagicor Life J amaica chose to commemorate Nelson Mandela Day by partnering with the Best Care Lodge donating monetarily and in kind. We saw first-hand the needs of the young people living there and were deeply moved by their gratitude. Congratulations to the committee for this year ’s Motivational Seminar Charity for also partnering with this vital institution. They have chosen to assist a group of young people who have been otherwise aban doned by their own families and society. I know from my personal visits to the facility that what the Seminar has contributed will put a smile in each heart at the Best Care Lodge. To the guest speakers, attendees and all those who partnered with the SMS2012 committee to make this year’s seminar a reality, a very big welcome and thank you on behalf of the Sagicor Life J amaica executive team. As the seminar unfolds, let ’s remember that we are one team, with one goal and one mission. I wish for you an inspiring, exciting and unforgettable SMS2012 experience.

EVP INDIVIDUAL INSURANCE DIVISION Mr. Mark Chisholm reetings! The theme for this year ’s Seminar – “On a Mission” is not only a reminder of our nation’s achievement of 50 years of independence, it hits home in a signif icant way for the Sagicor family. On the heels of last year ’s theme – Limitless, I believe that this year ’s Seminar is an opportunity to establish a solid foundation for the next stage of Sagicor’s maturation and pursuit towards being the undisputed leader in f inancial services across the Caribbean and by extension, the globe.

G

I must commend this year ’s Seminar planning committee for challenging us all to re-focus our personal and corporate objectives as we pursue a common mission together . I also want to thank the planning team for successfully elevating the Seminar’s standard each and every year. The fruits of their efforts have benef itted many of our Sagicor team members, and the excellent service they continue to provide our clients with. A major aspect of this year’s seminar is the outreach ef forts of the committee, which this year were channelled towards children and young adults of the Best Care Lodge. Their lives will never be the same because of your contribution. I encourage you all to make full use of this year ’s seminar. By paying keen attention to the discussions and content of each session and speaker , you will ensure a sustained path of personal and professional growth for many years to come. Write down the testimonials that inspire you and practice the principles you deem worthy of adopting and emulating. Remember, we are ON A MISSION, not just an arbitrary journey . Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines, strap on your seatbelts and enjoy the ride!

VP GROUP HUMAN RESOURCES Mr. Karl Williams welcome to SMS2012 – “On a Mission”, all presenters, both local and international and all attendees, especially new team members who are joining us for the f irst time at this year ’s seminar. The Planning Committee, led by Seminar Director M arcia Richards has once again put together what promises to be an amazing seminar – one that will engage our minds, challenge the status quo and intensify our desire to be the leading f inancial services G roup in Jamaica…we are on a mission! The Seminar, once again, is set against the backdrop of economic challenges in our nation but as evidenced by our superstars at the Olympics, we have the power within us to rise above any challenges whether they be personal or professional. This year’s installment will re-emphasize that fact and af ford team members the opportunity to make life adjustments to achieve goals and propel career development. SMS2012 is on a mission and through lively discussion sessions, powerful speakers and engaging activities, my expectation is that your mission will be a resounding success. A critical ingredient for this and any success is dependent on one ’s resolve to “stay the course”; Rome wasn’t built in a day but rather with a vision, persistence, determination, and hard work. Make sure you take the time to enjoy the investment you have made to attend this year’s seminar which will yield significant returns. Last but by no means least, I commend the planning committee for ensuring that this year ’s event will be memorable. To the speakers and other facilitators, a big thanks from all of us. Blessings!

ONOVAN PERKINS attended C alabar H igh School where he excelled at the arts and sciences and went on to the University of South Florida where he commenced studies in medicine. However , af ter being introduced to a course in personal finance he found his passion and decided to pursue a bachelor's degree in f inance. Perkins graduated with honours and went on to achieve an MBA from the University of V irginia. At age 52, Donovan Perkins has been the President and CEO of P an C aribbean F inancial Services Limited for 19 years and is the second longest-serving CEO of a banking group in Jamaica. Perkins shares some of his most intimate thoughts, views and persuasions for the 2012 edition of the SMS magazine.

Question: Where do you like to lyme? DP: I am more of a home body now , so I like to invite friends over... The other thing I consider “lyming” is getting together with a bunch of friends maybe three times a week and go riding (mountain bikes) together . Riding at about four miles an hour uphill, you get a chance to talk about everything; business, politics, life, kids – I look forward to it. Question: Where are your chill spots on the island? DP: The first one is at home but there are a number of places where I like to go with friends and family. Port Antonio is one of those places. From I was a little child I used to spend a lot of time in Portland. I like going to Treasure beach – I love the safety and the openness. Negril is more for my kids now – We go down there a couple times a year, on holidays or for ATI (for them!). YS Falls also is a favourite..just a very relaxing place. I think those places are special and they all have great memories because of the people that you are there. Good friends and or family . Question: What is your favourite television pro gramme? DP: I have to confess that my favourite television programme is what my wife watches. I watch TV mostly at night from.. I like the ‘Good Wife’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance’. I like the talent shows (yes, my wife likes the talents shows too). And I love football, so most Saturday and S unday mornings I am up early and in my bed or next door at my neighbour watching the British Premier League – I am a big Manchester United Fan. Question: What is the last bit of music you lis tened to that you enjoyed? DP: I listen to all dif ferent sorts of music. Last night I was looking at T ommy Lee’s recent music Page 12 • ON A MISSION | SMS 2012

video (“Some bwoy”). Catchy tune, don’t know what it is about those guys, but they have a way of getting some interesting stories into the music. Question: What is your beverage of choice? DP: Right now cherry juice. I enjoy a really cold Red Stripe Beer or G uiness occasionally, but I can handle only one at a time these days. But, if I had to grab for a drink now , I like a glass of slightly chilled red wine if I’m chilling. Question: Can you share the title of the last book that you read? DP: The last book I read was ‘The Snowball’ by Warren B uffet, an interesting history about his life and activities in business. I found him to be an amazing leader and what ’s good is I got a hard copy of the book which I started reading and then I got the CDs. So I used to listen to them when I was coming to work and stuck in heavy traffic. The story was so good, there were times when I would pull into my parking spot and sit there and listen for another four to f ive minutes. I found that was a very good way to learn and while making the best use of time. Question: Do you have a mentor or mentors? DP: I have never really had a formal mentor, but certainly for the last almost 20 years I have worked very closely with both Maurice Facey and Richard Byles and I would say I really learned a lot from both of them. So if I had to say who were the per sons who have mentored me for the most of my professional career I would say it would be those two individuals. They are two people I admire very much. Question: What has been your motivation? DP: I have learned that there is no substitute for hard work. There really isn’t any substitute for hard work. I enjoy what I do so I am very committed. I don’t see this as a job; I see it really as something that’s an interesting challenge that I get paid for – which is great. Question: What would you consider to be your greatest accomplishment? DP: I’ve never really thought in those terms. I think my kids are my greatest accomplishment. I have two children who will be 18 and 20 years old this year. I am pretty proud of them. I can ’t take much credit; my wife is really the person that over sees them. I think my strength is that I have is just the ability and the willingness to work hard ... and I recognize that whatever P anCaribbean accomplishes is as a result of the collective ef forts of our team members. Question: What is your personal mission? DP: My mission is to see P anCaribbean continue to grow and to become even a better catalyst for good than it has been in the past.

Discovering your You may be familiar with “core values” or having “internal drivers” – I call them your Success DNA, which is the unique set of S uccess Markers that you possess. They’re the unique beliefs and values that motivate you and drive your decisions (of ten without you even realizing it). While most people have a basic understanding of what these “Success Drivers” are, very few people ever take the time to actually discover what their own actually are.

Getting clear on what drives you is one of the fastest ways to break through in your career. Clarity equals massive power. What I can tell you is this – getting clear on your personal Success Drivers will not only provide you a “compass” to make your decisions, it will also allow you to feel more powerful and confident in everything that you do – particularly in the relationships that you build, both personally and profes sionally.

They promote greater cooperation and joy in your relationships. Understanding your own values allow you to be clear about what you will accept and tolerate in relationships. Being clear on your own values allows you to attract and seek out people with similar values, allow ing you to spend more time feeling under stood and accepted, as opposed to strug gling against what seems like “difficult” personalities.

The Power of “Success Markers” Here are some of the key reasons why iden tifying your Success DNA is so powerful.

They prevent you from making bad choices. Once you get clear on your values, the things that matter most to you become much more obvious and easy to identify. As a result, you make fewer decisions that end up conflicting with your values, which leads to unhappiness and constant frustrations.

Your Success Markers give you purpose, understanding and clarity. If you’re not clear on what your values are, you often end up living the values of other people around you – leading you to a sense of emptiness, confusion and monotony. On the other hand, when you begin to live your life aligned with your values, they help bring you purpose, direction wholeness, satisfaction and a sense of clarity.

Page 18 • ON A MISSION | SMS 2012

Defining them gives you confidence. You’ll notice that you will develop a quiet sense of confidence once you’re clear on what drives and motivates you. B y spending the time to identify and write down, you’ll know deep inside that you’re making decisions for the right reasons, as opposed

“Success DNA” to being manipulated or chasing false hopes – setting yourself up for failure. You’ll make decisions and lead your life in a more deliberate way, because you’ll have a strong sense of clarity. Getting clear on them makes life simpler. Quite simply, once you’re clear on your values, life gets simpler, because you’re not constantly faced with anxiety or torn between making choices. By using your markers as a compass to decisions you need to make, the answer becomes easier to see. In the end, the most successful people are those who make the most decisions, and this tool gives you that ability to make decisions much more quickly and effectively.

part of being a good corporate citizen requires a company ’s contribution to societal development. Sagicor Life J amaica, being the good corporate citizen, has continued to play its part through the annual Sagicor Motivational Seminar, and this year was no exception. Each year the seminar committee selects a charity and gives whether monetarily or in kind to individuals and organizations with signif icant financial need. On your registration form you were asked to donate to charity and we are pleased to say that your generous contributions this year have greatly benef itted the children and staff of the Best Care Foundation, a state-run child care home for phys ically and mentally challenged children. Our Charity Committee went ‘on a mission’ to ensure that as much help was given to this Foundation which lacks well-needed financial resources and proper facilities to care for these special children. Over a two month period, our team organized a back-to-school clothes and school supplies drive across the Sagicor Jamaica Group, held a raffle to garner some additional f inancial assistance and gave selflessly of their time to a work day to meet with the children and staf f of the home and do some well needed renovation to the facility . These efforts were undoubtedly a huge success! We can’t say how grateful the Foundation is for your generous contributions. This initiative would not have been possible without the help of so many people and so we must say a special thank you to all team members who actively partici pated in one way or the other, and to our sponsors who donated gif ts and kind. Please join me in congratulating our hardworking and dedicated Charity team, Barrington Groves, Hugh Meredith and Albert Lyon, who went above and beyond to execute this year’s charity. How to Survive and Thrive Through any Business Setback: The four-step process of turning a setback into a comeback By Willie Jolley, Author of the International Best-Selling Book "A Setback Is A Setup For A Comeback!" Has your business ever had a setback? Of course it has. Perhaps your right-hand person left for your biggest competitor. Or maybe your top salesperson quit without notice and took a few key accounts. Or even worse, per haps you lost everything because of a bad business decision. Whatever happened, whether it was a large or small setback, how you dealt with the issue most likely determined where you are today. Those who realize that setbacks are simply part of the business process usually thrive,

1. Focus Your Vision

while those who dwell on the changes set backs bring routinely falter. The fact is, a setback is really a change that needs to occur in order to move forward. And no matter what industry you're in, you're bound to have things change. The key is to remember that these temporary setbacks can empower you to reach even greater levels of future business success. No matter what obstacle has plagued your business, following is the four-step process that can help you sur vive and thrive through any business setback.

4. Keep the Desire

1. Where you focus your energy determines where you will go. The old saying states, “Whatever you focus on longest, always becomes strongest!” If you focus on the setback and the challenges it brought you, your business can't move forward. However, when you focus your vision on what you want your business to become-despite the setback-then you're using the setback for what it really is: a growth opportunity and a transitionary period.

Desire is the degree of energy you're willing to exert in order to reach your goal. In other words, how badly do you want your business to survive? And what are you willing to do in order to achieve it? K eep in mind an old business saying: "It's impossible to reach second base if you are afraid to leave f irst base." Decide how badly you want to achieve the goal and then keep going af ter it until you achieve it.

2. Make a Decision

Remember, having a business setback is not an "if" proposition; it's a "when." And when one occurs in your business, you need to make a conscious decision to view it not as a problem, but rather as a learning opportuni ty. You must decide what you're going to do about the setback and focus on the solution.

Both success and failure are decisions. So once your vision is in place, you need to decide you're going to win despite the setback. The truth is successful business peo ple choose to be successful. No matter what setback they encounter, they decide to overcome it and prevail.

3. Take Action A decision without action is simply an illu sion; and an action without a vision is mere confusion! But a vision plus action, put together, will give your life a transfusion. And you can change the world! Remember, you might not be responsible for getting knocked down, but you are responsible for getting back up! Only those who act achieve their goals.

By viewing your business' setback as a chance for future growth, every business challenge can have a positive outcome. And every setback can be seen as nothing but a setup for an incredible comeback.

Top Ten Rules Rule One - You will receive a body. Whether you love it or hate it, it's yours for life, so accept it. What counts is what's inside.

Rule Two - You will be presented with lessons.

Life is a constant learning experience, which every day provides opportunities for you to learn more. These lessons are specific to you, and learning them 'is the key to discovering and fulf illing the meaning and relevance of your own life'.

Rule Three - There are no mistakes, only les sons. Your development towards wisdom is a process of experimentation, trial and error, so it's inevitable things will not always go to plan or turn out how you'd want. Compassion is the remedy for harsh judgment - of ourselves and others. Forgiveness is not only divine - it's also 'the act of erasing an emotional debt'. Behaving ethically, with integrity, and with humour - especially the ability to laugh at yourself and your own mishaps - are cen tral to the perspective that 'mistakes' are simply lessons we must learn. Rule Four - The lesson is repeated until learned.

Lessons repeat until learned. What manifests as problems and challenges, irritations and frustrations are more lessons - they will repeat until you see them as such and learn from them. Y our own awareness and your ability to change are requisites for executing this rule. Also fundamental is the acceptance that you are not a victim of fate or circumstance - 'causality' must be acknowledged; that is to say: things happen to you because of how you are and what you do. To blame anyone or anything else for your misfortunes is an escape and a denial; you yourself are responsible for you, and what hap pens to you. Patience is required - change doesn't happen overnight, so give change time to happen.

piness. Be grateful for and enjoy what you have, and where you are on your journey. Appreciate the abundance of what's good in your life, rather than measure and amass things that do not actually lead to happiness. Living in the present helps you attain peace.

Rule Seven - Others are only mirrors of you.

You love or hate something about another person according to what you love or hate about yourself. Be tolerant; accept others as they are, and strive for clarity of self-awareness; strive to truly understand and have an objective perception of your own self, your thoughts and feelings. Negative experiences are opportunities to heal the wounds that you carry . Support others, and by doing so you support your self. Where you are unable to support others it is a sign that you are not adequately attending to your own needs.

Rule Eight - What you make of your life is up to

you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. T ake responsibility for yourself. Learn to let go when you cannot change things. Don't get angry about things - bitter memories clutter your mind. Courage resides in all of us - use it when you need to do what's right for you. We all possess a strong natural power and adventurous spirit, which you should draw on to embrace what lies ahead.

Rule Nine - Your answers lie inside of you. Trust your instincts and your innermost feelings, whether you hear them as a little voice or a flash of inspiration. Listen to feelings as well as sounds. Look, listen, and trust. Draw on your natural inspi ration.

Rule Five - Learning does not end. While you are alive there are always lessons to be learned. Surrender to the 'rhythm of life', don't struggle against it. Commit to the process of constant learn ing and change - be humble enough to always acknowledge your own weaknesses, and be flexible enough to adapt from what you may be accus tomed to, because rigidity will deny you the free dom of new possibilities.

Rule Ten - You will forget all this at birth. W e are all born with all of these capabilities - our early experiences lead us into a physical world, away from our spiritual selves, so that we become doubt ful, cynical and lacking belief and conf idence. The ten Rules are not commandments, they are univer sal truths that apply to us all. When you lose your way, call upon them. Have faith in the strength of your spirit. Aspire to be wise - wisdom is the ulti mate path of your life, and it knows no limits other than those you impose on yourself.

Rule Six - "There" is no better than "here". The other side of the hill may be greener than your own, but being there is not the key to endless hap -
