Language Support

Extra-Curricular Activities

Our language support programme encompasses English as another language (EAL), German as another language (GAL) as well as mother tongue language support.

and Team Sports

The EAL program's primary purpose is to ensure that our students become proficient in English and achieve academic success. GAL services are provided for students arriving with little or not German, to aid students in their integration into daily life in Switzerland.

University & Career Services Whether an ISSH student is planning to go to university or to do a gap year collecting some work experience, our career services help secondary students explore their career options and provide assistance in this important transition time.

ISSH Junior College International School of Schaffhausen opens new boarding school programme Since August 2014, ISSH offers a residential programme for students from all corners of the world. International or Swiss students attend the International Baccalaureate Programme at ISSH and live in the newly opened boarding house. Currently there are 6 students aged 15-17 enrolled in the programme. They live in the ISSH Boarding house near the town center and attend grades 10-12. The students come from Finland, Poland, Bhutan and Slovakia. They found their way to Schaffhausen via the internet. The attraction for them and their parents was the fact that ISSH especially fosters independence and self-management skills and also has a career planning and work experience programme alongside the academics. The boarding students take turns in being responsible for the cooking or planning of excursions and activities. The boarders are challenged and need to engage in their studies. The IB Diploma programme in English is a very demanding course and our students learn German as an additional language. They nevertheless enjoy life at the boarding house and find time to explore the immediate and more distant environment of Schaffhausen and Switzerland.

Growth Mindset At ISSH we inspire students to have a growth mindset. This means we will always encourage and praise effort over purely commenting on outcome or talent. Telling students merely that they are smart, talented or able is not supporting the growth mindset. But praising them for effort, for the time and care they have put into a task and to highlight progress more than mere results will benefit both the highflyer and the slow learner. Each of us can grow every day and in every direction, no matter what we set our mind to. This firm belief can change lives and the world.

There are 6 student boarders in the Junior College first year

World-renowned Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck explains that it is not just our abilities and talents that bring us success, but whether we approach our goal with a fixed or growth mindset. Students with a growth mindset understand that practice, making mistakes and failure is part of learning and that the more you practice and engage in learning, the better the outcome. The brain is like a muscle– if you work it, it gets stronger. Students with a fixed mindset believe that they are either good at something or that they are not good. They avoid doing things that don‘t come naturally to them and will rather not try than experience failure.
