Latta Homeschoolers: Geocaching Merit Badge

From lakes to streams to wetlands, Mecklenburg County is blessed with an abundance of freshwater habitats. Students will learn about the importance of these habitats through field investigations where they will perform water quality tests and collect and identify aquatic invertebrates. Each class is field-based so students should dress appropriately. Curriculum is appropriate for 5th – 7th grade and all materials and transportation are provided. Students should be enrolled in, or have already taken, the introductory ecology series.

Want to learn more details about the high tech treasure hunt known as Geocaching? Using the Boy Scout Merit badge handbook as our guide, we will learn what it takes to have fun and be successful at this exciting outdoor hobby. Learn what it takes to be the First to Find, how to use proper Geocaching etiquette and how to apply the principles of Leave No Trace. All equipment provided, please bring water and a snack.

Latta Homeschoolers: Orienteering Merit Badge Not a scout, but interested in some of the requirements of the badge? We will go into more detail about the sport of orienteering: what it is, how to read a map and use a compass, and why these navigation skills are good to have in this modern age of technology. We will use the Boy Scout Orienteering Merit badge handbook as our guide, working through many of the requirements and practicing these skills on our permanent orienteering course. All equipment provided, please bring water and a snack.

Teens BSA: Wilderness Survival

Latta Homeschoolers: Outdoor Cooking Merit Badge Not a scout, but interested in some of the requirements of the Boy Scout merit badge? Using the Cooking Merit badge handbook as our guide, we will learn how to plan, pack, and prepare a meal while camping in the great outdoors, using a variety of cooking equipment. Students will also be involved in the preparing the meals during class. All equipment provided. Please bring water and a snack.

Get Going Guide

Spring 2013

Upon completion of this course, all registered Boy Scouts will earn the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge. Scouts will have instructional and practical sessions during the day and complete their requirements by sleeping in a shelter that they have constructed out of natural materials. Please bring clothing and rain gear that will be safe and appropriate for an overnight stay in your shelter without the use of a sleeping bag. Lunch, dinner and breakfast will be provided.

Spring Break Backpacking Trip: Cumberland Island National Seashore Get out of town during spring break and visit the beautiful Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia. We will travel by van to St. Mary’s, Georgia, where we will catch a ferry ride over to this historic island. Once on the island, we will hike to several campsites while exploring the historical sites, forests, and beaches that the island has to offer. Be prepared for primitive camping and backpacking during this trip. Meals will be provided during the camping portions. Bring money for food stops to and from Cumberland Island. Basic camping and backpacking gear will be provided and a packing list will be explained upon registration. A pretrip meeting is required and will be scheduled approximately 2 weeks before the trip.

Adults American Canoe Association: Fundamentals of Kayaking Develop your kayaking skills through this ACA level 1 kayaking class on Mountain Island Lake. This class is perfect for beginners or those wanting to practice their skills with ACA certified instructors. We will cover topics including: boat types, entering/exiting the boat, paddle strokes, rescues, and safety equipment. Please bring a lunch, change of clothes (one set will get wet!), and shoes that can get wet. All kayaking equipment will be provided.
