ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014

A LETTER FROM TOM KING Over half a million visitors. Twelve locations. Exhibitions ranging from the prehistoric behemoths of Ice Age Giants: The Mystery of Mastodons and Mammoths to Indiana art with Fearless Furniture, James Spencer Russell: Style, Elegance and Wit and 431 Gallery: Art and Impact – this past year was one that showed the breadth of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites’ expertise, and the range of Hoosier stories that we tell. This is what we do – we tell Hoosier stories. From the ancient geology beneath our feet to the bones of Ice Age animals to the contemporary culture of our state, we showcase Indiana. We show it to school children, who come through our doors eager to learn. This year, we announced the Field Trip Fund, which allows any K-12 Indiana school group to visit the museum and 10 of our historic sites free of charge. As an institution, we constantly strive to be more accessible, more relevant and more nimble. The Field Trip Fund is just one example of the ways that we continue to evolve. We updated the exhibitions in our core galleries, and expanded our interpretive spaces at several of our historic sites. We replaced the roof of the historic Culbertson Mansion. We created a spinoff of the well-known “Happy” video that became a viral Internet hit and launched an international museum competition. We had much-needed restoration work done for our copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment. From the funny to the serious, the mundane-seeming to the grand, it has been a busy year, and we look forward to continuing this work in the year ahead. This is undoubtedly an exciting time to be part of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. Through the work and generosity of our visitors, donors, staff, volunteers and members, we are able not only to look back at the accomplishments of the last year with pride, but also to look forward to the coming year with enthusiasm. Join us this year as we dance into the past with American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition, memorialize the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War’s end with So Costly a Sacrifice: Lincoln and Loss, explore the work of photojournalist William Foley and enjoy the art of Hoosier Group artist William Forsyth. I think you’ll rediscover —once again—the wonders of Indiana. Sincerely,

Thomas A. King President & CEO

VISITORS AT THE STATE HISTORIC SITES

A LOOK AHEAD The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites has had an exceptional year, and there’s more to come. In 2014-15, we’ll begin work on the museum’s core galleries to ensure that they are vibrant, interactive and continue to entrance visitors with the wonders of Indiana. To enhance the Celebration Crossing experience, Santa will get a new house on Level 1—we think he’ll like the new square footage, and so will visitors. And, with 19 Stars, a quilt show featuring both contemporary and historic Hoosier quilts, we’ll kick off the first of our bicentennial–related exhibits. Around the state, you’ll see work begin on a new interpretive center for the Levi Coffin State Historic State, enabling, for the first time, larger context to the important story of the Underground Railroad in Indiana—and year-round visitation. In Corydon, work will begin on the town square and First State Capitol to ensure water doesn’t damage 200 years of Indiana history and to prepare the square for the state’s bicentennial. At the T.C. Steele State Historic Site, the gardens will get a refresh to repair the damage of recent harsh winters and dry summers. At all of our locations, we’ll embark on projects—large and small—to ensure that we meet our missions of both stewardship and conservation, along with interpretation and education.
