Welcome back to school! We are delighted to see all our students and parents at the start of a new school year. I hope you are all rested and ready to begin an exciting new year! A warm welcome to our new families. Please do get involved in the wider school community through the Parent Teacher Association. Our transitions officer, Claudine Hakim, is also available to help and assist you with any settling in issues. You can contact her by email on chakim@islschools.org or through the school office. We ended the last academic year on a high note with excellent Diploma results. The graduating students are now preparing to enter university having secured places at top universities around the
world. You can read more about this further in this Bulletin. In August we also received fantastic MYP results and our students are now set up to continue their studies in the Diploma College. In this bulletin we have included information about new staff and details of primary class teachers and secondary tutors. You will have an opportunity to meet key staff at the Welcome Evening next Thursday, 7 September. The evening will also be an opportunity to find out more about the upcoming residential trips. An invitation to this event has been sent out today. On Monday you will also receive a letter about security at the school and arrangements for morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Please read this carefully. We feel that clearer arrangements for this as well as clarity on access to the school premises will help increase security for our community. With a new leadership structure this year, Richard and I have discussed how our roles will be split. Richard will focus on curriculum development across the three programmes, PYP, MYP and DP as well as overseeing service learning and student governance. I will be involved with student wellbeing, staffing, quality of teaching and learning and the day to day operation of the ISL London campuses. Although we have some distinct focus areas, Richard and I will be working closely on all aspects of school development and are looking forwards to an exciting and productive year. The senior leadership team have also been reviewing progress with our strategic plan and have identified some focus areas for this year. In brief these are: • To ensure that the curriculum is well-articulated and innovative and that all students are challenged. • To continue to review our unique, world-leading multi-lingual education provision. We have begun this work and our Language Review group will update you on their work in future bulletins. • To continue to develop our authentic service learning programme by building on existing programmes such as our work with refugees and projects such as the India Schools initiative. • To continue to develop student leadership and governance. • To build on our excellent pastoral support programme by enhancing the tutor programme. and building on our student support. Our new Head of Pastoral, Max Hull will be leading this initiative. We will update you regularly on progress with these initiatives. I look forward to seeing you at our Welcome Evening next Thursday. Important School Announcements New staff Neiada, Elisabeth: Grade 3 Teacher Elisabeth Neiada joined ISL in 2017, after 6 years of teaching at International Schools in London, Paris and New York. She received her Masters Degree in International Education at NYU Steinhardt, New York. She specialized in the International Baccalaureate Program and Bilingual education. Elisabeth was born and raised in Athens, Greece, which is home for her. Elisabeth’s passions along with teaching are travelling, cooking and photography.
Loukidou, Rafailia: Greek Teacher Rafailia joined ISL London in 2017 as Greek Mother Tongue Teacher. She studied Classics and Modern Greek Language and Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She continued her studies with a MA in Classics at UCL with a specialisation in Ancient Greek Lyric Poetry. She has previously taught Ancient and Modern Greek as well as Latin.
Van Hoekelen, Sandra: Grade 5 Teacher Sandra is Canadian and joined ISL London in 2017. She has over 14 years of international teaching experience and most recently taught in Thailand where she gained experience teaching inquiry based learning through the Reggio Emilia Approach. She also has experience delivering the Primary Years Program in schools in Turkey and UAE. Since beginning her teaching career as an EAL teacher, she has completed an MA in Educational Psychology as well as a post graduate certification in Gifted Education.
Spinks, Daniel: Head of Student Welfare Daniel has 12 years teaching experience and has taught IB Diploma history, psychology, TOK and MYP Individuals and Societies in schools in South East Asia, West Africa, Portugal and the UK. On returning to the UK Daniel completed an MA in Social Work in 2014; his subsequent employment as a Children and Families Social Worker has proved extremely beneficial on his return to education and will prove useful in his new role as Head of Student Welfare at the IB college.
Suen, Suen Ling: Science Laboratory Technician Suen Ling joined ISL London in 2017 coming from a background in chemical analyses. Having worked in both research and commercial sectors, she has extensive experience in classical chemistry and instrumental techniques.
Lee Park, Jung Soon: Korean Mother Tongue Teacher Jung Soon Lee Park has taught Korean language and literature for 11 years in South Korea and 13 years in England. She has extensive experience in teaching Korean to primary school, secondary school and IB diploma students. She has also studied teaching Korean as a foreign language and has published three text books on Korean as a foreign language. She first joined ISL London in 2014.
van Loo, Marianne: Dutch Mother Tongue Teacher Marianne joined ISL London in 2017 as a Dutch teacher in primary and secondary. She has previously taught in Primary schools in the Netherlands, Singapore and Belgium.
Gill, Milena: Primary EAL Teacher Milena joined the ISL group in 2010 and is an English as an Additional Language ((EAL) teacher. A trilingual, lifelong language learner and educator, Milena has lived in many countries and has taught across all grade levels.
Korab, Ana: Polish Mother Tongue Teacher Ana is passionate about the Polish Language and has been teaching it since graduating with a Master Degree from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. In London Ana worked as an inclusion teaching assistant in English secondary schools and has taught Polish as a Second Language for adults in colleges, the Polish Emabassy Saturday Polish School. Ana is very happy to join ISL London in 2017 for its dynamic multi-cultural environment.
Lamb, Jessica: Grade 3 TA Jessica is from London but has previously lived in Austria, Belgium and Spain and can speak Spanish and German. She studied International Relations and Modern History at the University of East Anglia. Before joining ISL London, she worked as a Language Assistant in a Bilingual Primary School in Madrid.
Harrison, Louise: Geography Teacher and Head of Individuals & Societies Louise joined ISL in 2017. She has taught MYP and DP at International schools in Paris and London since 2002. Before her career in international education she taught Geography GCSE and A ‘level in central London. She received her BA in Geography from Liverpool university, her post grad in Development studies from Staffordshire university and her PGCE at the Institute of Education (University of London). She an enthusiastic photographer and enjoys cycling.
Velencei, Renata: Hungarian Teacher Renata studied Hungarian Language and Literature, German Literature and Psychology in University Attila Jozsef, Szeged and Marketing Communication in Budapest, Hungary. She worked as a Public Relation Manager in House of Terror Museum and an Editor for Media and Lecturer in Universities.
Coveney, Brigitte: Teaching Assistant Brigitte joined ISL London in November 2016. She has extensive experience in Primary Education and teaching EAL to young children. She speaks French, English and has a working knowledge of Spanish. In her spare time she enjoys rowing.
Brumpton, Clare: Librarian Clare has been a school librarian in the UK for nearly 20 years. She has a degree in Social Sciences, a Masters degree in Library Management where she specialised in School Librarianship and a Postgrad Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management. She joined ISL Surrey in 2015 and now works at ISL London in the Diploma College Library and at ISL Surrey.
Leahy, Georgina: Humanities Teacher Georgina studied Psychology, Sociology and English at the University of Wollongong in Australia. She went on to complete a Graduate Diploma in secondary education. Georgina has taught English, EAL/D, History and Geography in Australia but is excited to teach in an international environment.
Latorre Arnedo, Isabel: Grade 5 Teaching Assistant Isabel taught Spanish and English to EAL children in a Primary School in North London for three years before joining us. Previously she had been teaching English in Spain for over eight years. She holds a Degree in English Studies and a Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching. She has also worked teaching English in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) lessons for adults in London.
Parker, Richard: ISL UK Principal Richard Parker joined ISL Surrey in 2015 as Campus Principal and Head of Secondary. Prior to his appointment, he was Secondary School Principal at Victoria Shanghai Academy in Hong Kong and has previously held various leadership roles in Portugal, Brunei and Spain. He is an IB Workshop Leader for administrators new to the Middle Years Programme and MYP Humanities, and is active in the Alliance of International Education. He holds an MA and BA in history from Cambridge University. In 2017 Richard became the UK Principal, overseeing the academic projects for ISL London and ISL Surrey.
D’Antonio, Luigi: Head of Mathematics After obtaining a PGCE in secondary education from the University of Lancaster in 2008 Luigi taught mathematics at Dallam School for seven years where he was in charge of the Gifted and Talented program and of the KS5 syllabus. Thereafter he was Head of Mathematics at ISL Surrey for two years. Before teaching he worked for Ericsson in the Netherlands, Sweden and Italy, where he was technical co-ordinator of the Italian branch of Ericsson Research. He has a degree in Electronic Engineering and a PhD in Control Systems from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He is the co-author of four patents and of five academic publications.

ISL London operates an extensive Instrumental Music Programme, staffed by 11 visiting instrumental music teachers and coordinated by Mr James Ryan. To enrol your child for individual instrumental music lessons at ISL London please read this letter, read and complete this agreement form and return to the school office before 8th September 2017. Extra Curricular Programme
ISL London offers in excess of 40 clubs per week in a variety of different activities including sport, art, technology, sciences, Service Learning, global issues and music. The clubs are an exciting extension to the school day that allows students to embrace the activities they enjoy most. The after-school Club Programme is delivered by both internal teaching staff and external coaches and providers. Most clubs operate from 15:3016:30 daily and on Wednesdays from 14:30-15:30 (please ensure you check timings when you register) and the cost of clubs vary. Most Term 1 clubs begin in the week commencing 25th September and detailed information about those can be found at mychq.net/ isllondon (you will need your login details, which were emailed to you today). Pre-season preparation for ISSA Football and Volleyball tournaments begin on Monday 4th September and interested players should sign up online. Please read the Co-Curricular Programme Handbook for instructions on how to sign up and who to contact for any issues. We look forward to having another amazing year of clubs.

Class of 2017 Celebrates Strong IB Diploma Results We are delighted to announce another strong year for IB Diploma results at ISL London. We are delighted to announce another strong year for IB Diploma results at ISL London. The average total points for IB Diplomas awarded was 32, placing ISL graduates again significantly above the 2016 IB world average of 30 points. The average grade awarded to IB Diploma students in all subjects was 5.1, again significantly above the IB 2016 world average at 4.8. Fully 30% of students gained 35 or more points in their IB Diploma. This year’s highest score was 43 points, a total achieved by only 0.5% of students internationally. Of the IB Diplomas awarded to ISL students, 70% were for bilingual diplomas. A bilingual diploma is awarded when a student studies two languages at ‘mother tongue’ level (in group 1 language and literature) or when a student studies a mother tongue that is not English. This compares to 23% of bilingual diplomas awarded globally by the IB in 2016, and is continued testament to our success in supporting multilingualism in the IB Diploma. Universities will confirm offers of place over the next few weeks, but already ISL graduates have confirmation they have met conditions of offer for study at universities worldwide, including: Civil Engineering at Imperial College London Medicine at Barts and The London School of Medicine, Queen Mary University of London Civil Engineering at University College London Global Health and Social Medicine at King’s College London Sociology at Bath University, UK Law at Exeter University, UK Law at Birmingham University, UK Parson’s School of Design, New York West Virginia University, USA with option to major in Engineering and Music Computer Science at Cardiff University, Wales Computer Science at Hull University, UK Economics at City University, London Management at City University, London International Politics and Sociology at City University, London International Business and Management at Newcastle University International Business Administration at Hult International Business School, London Foundation Art and Design at the City and Guilds School of Art, London As some students will request re-marks, results could improve still further throughout the summer.
