ABATE of ARKANSAS Does Not Endorse Any Advertiser or Product In This Publication
The main purpose of the ABATE organization is to work toward continued freedom of the road by insuring that motorcyclist’s point of view is presented to our legislators and to promote motorcycle safety, rider education and public awareness. We are trying to alleviate the very real possibility of “Big Brother Government”. We encourage all our members to be informed registered voters. We write letters to our elected officials and stay aware of what is going on with motorcycle legislation, and other transportation issues. We welcome interested parties to any of our activities or to join our organization.

THE RAY GOWEN AWARD
Decades ago, there was an ABATE member named Ray Gowen. Ray was one of those guys who loved people, especially biker people. He and his wife would be at almost every ABATE event and, not just his district’s events, but every event. He was one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave. Ray welcomed everyone to ABATE and to the events where he was a volunteer. His rugged biker look just might have made some shy away but, his infectious smile and giving, loving servant’s heart would win most everyone over. Ray was an ordinary ABATE member that always gave that extra little bit, making Ray Gowen that extraordinary ABATE member. Ray passed away and his hard work and passion was missed so, the State Board of ABATE created the “Ray Gowen Memorial Award.” Ray exemplified the inscription on the plaque that is given to the most outstanding ABATE member each year in the state of Arkansas. Ordinarily, each year there is a member that is nominated to the State Board and the tough decision is made and this member is selected. This year, 2024, Rodney Farley was nominated and received the Ray Gowen award, presented to him April 14th at The ABATE of Arkansas state meeting held in Little Rock. Rodney is a founding member as well as a Charter member and Lifetime member of many SMRO. He has been a member 39 years and has held many positions in his district and the state level. He has held many positions in the organization to include state chairman and the current state co-chair, the state MRF representative, president of the new District 1 and as of January this year, the State Office Manager. Rodney did not let District 1 die when they closed down. He got people to join him in getting ir back and has worked his rear end off trying to get the old members to show up for meetings as well as trying to get new members to join. Rodney has used his own money to get things for the District and has rarely ever asked for reimbursement. He believes in ABATE with all his heart and will do his best to keep it going as long as he can. Rodney has had some health issues during the past year and even though he may have had to slow down, he never gave up any of the positions he currently holds. Rodney is a true inspiration for all of us if we just follow his example.

2022 Crash Statistics
NHTSA Report Mixed News For Bikers
This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released its final 2022 Fatality Analysis Reporting System traffic crash data. NHTSA reported 42,514 total fatalities in the U.S. in 2022. That is a 1.7% decrease from the previous year.
However, the final numbers show mixed results for motorcyclists. Sadly, overall rider deaths on our nation’s roadways increased by 1.2%. The official number of motorcyclists killed in 2022 was 6,218, an increase of 75 deaths compared to 2021.
Biker deaths now account for 15% of all fatalities on the road, up 1% from 2021. Large truck, bus and pedestrian deaths also saw increases, while passenger car occupants saw a decrease. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) remains concerned that these numbers may justify lawmakers taking a closer look at motorcyclists and our place in the transportation network. We surely do not need to be singled out for further scrutiny and have our freedoms limited.
Fortunately, the final number of motorcyclists injured dropped by 2.6% in 2022. Two years ago, there were 82,687 biker injuries in crashes, down 2,211 from 84,898 the previous year.
While every crash is unique, there are some disturbing trends. Alcohol-impaired fatal crashes account for 29% of all motorcyclist deaths. Across the nation, 7.8% of fatal crashes involved a “distracted driver.” Personal responsibility is a core value of the MRF. We must ensure we are all making the right decisions to protect ourselves and others on the road. If we don’t, who will?

MY email has been messed up since a recent update and it appears that April’s newsletter didn’t make it to Rodney. Hopefully I’ve got it worked out now and will be able to share a few things. We at D13 are ready for Riding! We have quite a few rides coming up that we are all looking forward to. No big ride this year, we do that every other year and will start discussing the next one soon.
