Welcome to Issue 124 The City of Moreton Bay is launching another wildlife preservation initiative, with council introducing roadside escape points for kangaroos following the successful field trial of roadside hatches designed to reduce koala fatalities.

Believe it or not, the City of Moreton Bay is set to welcome one million residents within the next 30 years, with a new report revealing the roadmap to a prosperous, connected and sustainable future.

Sheree Hoddinett has written a heartwarming article about how ‘Story Dogs’ are helping children in the community find confidence through reading.

Instead of shying away from a challenging year, the junior portion of the Caboolture Snakes Rugby League Club has faced it head on. A completely new junior board has been appointed with David Reynolds as junior president and Heidi Wecker as treasurer, marking a clear shift in leadership and direction.

Chase found out some of their upcoming plans for the club this season.

The summer holidays are here, lasting six to eight weeks, but for some parents they can feel much longer. With winter sports like rugby league, soccer and Australian rules football dominating the local sporting scene in Moreton Bay, finding suitable activities for the children over the summer break can be a challenge, Chase shares some great ideas to help keep kids active and entertained.

Local government is the grassroots of our democracy, but it’s also where the cracks first appear.

If I were a dodgy developer or an ambitious would-be politician chasing opportunity, I’d head straight for a fastgrowing region with minimal scrutiny.

Somewhere just like ours.

As fewer residents attend meetings or question decisions, the small but crucial details of community life slip into the shadows — and that’s where the worst decisions are made. Roads, resorts, contracts, consultants: public money quietly redirected, questionable approvals waved through, slick operators working the system while almost no one watches.

Moreton Bay is booming, yet developments sail through that wouldn’t pass a basic pub test. Councillors vote in lockstep, rarely demanding answers, all while earning generous salaries. The public is expected to trust a process that barely shows its workings.

Alan MacSporran, former CCC chair, said

confidence in councils was “on the nose”.

He was being polite. When transparency disappears, suspicion fills the gap. Local government shapes political habits — and those habits follow people up the ladder. The question is whether anyone will look before the damage becomes too big to ignore.

R Hansen Bongaree The kindness of strangers I cannot let this year pass without acknowledging the kindness of a couple with two children and in the middle of their shifting house, bringing food and friendship to the area in Woorim, where there are mostly elderly people.

Surely, this is the true essence of kindness to those without power and rather bewildered.

Cheers to anot her year

By Sheree Hoddinett Every new year, on the stroke of midnight, we often perform the same ritual. Fireworks crackle and pop, glasses clink and somewhere between the usual “Happy New Year” chorus and the first regret of the year, we make promises to ourselves that would impress even the most optimistic life coach.

This year will be different, we say. This year, I will wake up at 5am, drink lemon water, meditate, run 10 kilometres and still arrive at work glowing with inner peace. I will eat clean, spend less, save more, scroll less, read more and finally understand how superannuation works.

I will be calm. I will be organised. I will be a new person by the time we get through the first month of the year. It’s funny how a night of relaxing and having fun brings out the “best” in everyone!

New Year’s resolutions are the adult equivalent of writing a letter to Santa.

They are hopeful, ambitious and quietly ignore all available evidence from the past 12 months. Because if discipline were truly contagious, gyms wouldn’t be empty by February and that half-used yoga mat wouldn’t be living permanently under the bed.

By the time we realise what could have been, reality arrives. It usually turns up in the form of a stinking hot 40-degree day, a work deadline or a packet (possibly three in my case, haha!) of Tim Tams that ‘accidentally’ falls into the trolley.

The 6am alarm is silenced with the reflexes of a professional gamer. The run becomes a ‘rest day’, which becomes a ‘busy week’, which becomes a vague intention to walk more sometime when it’s not so bloody hot.

And yet, we persist. We buy planners, download apps and announce our goals publicly, as if shame is a sustainable motivational tool. We track steps, calories, spending and sleep, until the sheer admin of self-improvement becomes exhausting. At some point, we realise we need a nap to recover from trying to better ourselves. But here’s the thing no one really tells you: there is

something far better than trying to stick to New Year’s resolutions. It’s called living. I know, right?!

Living is making the choice to get up and move your body because it feels good, not because an app told you to do it. It’s cooking a good meal most nights and also eating hot chips at the beach without mentally calculating how long you’ll need to ‘burn them off’. It’s saving money where you can and spending it where it brings genuine joy, even if that joy is a last-minute weekend away or some really good cheese with a delicious wine.

Living is setting intentions instead of ultimatums. It’s swapping “I will never do this again” for “I’ll try to do this a bit more often”. It’s understanding that progress isn’t ruined by one missed workout, one late night or one dessert (okay maybe more than one) that was absolutely worth it. It’s also knowing when to laugh at yourself. Because nothing bonds humanity quite like the collective experience of abandoned resolutions. We are united by dusty gym memberships, unused journals and water bottles designed to remind us to drink more water, which now serve as emotional support accessories on our desks.

The irony is that the best changes rarely arrive on January 1. They sneak in quietly, on a random Tuesday in March, when you decide to go for a walk because the weather’s nice, or cook at home because you feel like it or go to bed early because you’re tired. No fireworks. No declarations. Just small, sensible choices that don’t require a countdown clock.

So this year, by all means, have that resolution. Write it down. Dream big.

But also give yourself permission to be human. To change your mind. To start again. Or not start at all. Because better than sticking to New Year’s resolutions is enjoying your life while you’re busy making it. And if that includes a few broken promises, a second slice of chocolate cake and a nap instead of a run, you’re probably doing it exactly right!

As we welcome a new year, January is a natural time to pause, reflect and look ahead. For many families across Pumicestone, it’s a month of rest, reconnection and re-setting after a busy year.

Over the past year, my office has worked hard to assist residents with a wide range of issues, from housing and health access, to transport, education and cost-of-living pressures. Every piece of correspondence, every phone call and every meeting reminds me why local representation matters. Your concerns shape my advocacy and guide my work in parliament.

One of the most consistent messages I hear across Pumicestone is the importance of strong, connected communities. Whether it’s supporting local schools, sporting clubs, volunteer groups or small businesses, these connections are what make our region such a great place to live. I want to thank the many volunteers and community leaders who give their time and energy, often quietly, to support others. Your efforts do not go unnoticed.

The end of 2025 also saw some key reform. The Crisafulli Government is delivering a balanced energy plan that improves the energy assets we’ve got while we build what we need for the future.

Queensland’s Energy Roadmap is about delivering a sensible, practical transition that keeps power affordable, reliable and sustainable for households and businesses. It focuses on strengthening our existing energy assets while building what is needed for the future, giving

certainty around the role of coal and gas and encouraging private investment in renewables and firming projects.

Importantly, the Roadmap is expected to reduce energy system costs for taxpayers by $26 billion to 2035, helping avoid the average Queensland household paying an extra $1035 a year. Through targeted investment in maintenance, new generation, storage and transmission, community batteries, regional energy hubs and clear standards for renewable developers, the Roadmap aims to balance system reliability, economic viability and community expectations while supporting jobs and long-term energy security across Queensland.

and while the experience was enriching, the pull to create something of her own never quite left. That spark soon turned into a shared vision. Sitting down together, Frances and Peter mapped out what they believed a modern, welcoming singing group should look like. Those ideas evolved into a mission statement and in December 2025, Harmony Haven Singing Group (HHSG) was officially launched.

At its heart, HHSG is a joyful and inclusive contemporary singing group that brings people together through the power of music. It is designed to be a welcoming space for singers of all backgrounds and abilities, where people can connect, express themselves and build genuine community through song.

The group aims to bridge generations, encouraging bonding across a wide age range of adults, while also giving back through free community performances and affordable subscribed concerts.

Frances has a clear dream for the future, that HHSG will become a respected and sought-after community singing group.

“It will provide high quality concerts and free performances at community events

and aged care facilities,” Frances said.

“It will be known for its contemporary song library and unique arrangements combined with traditional choral arrangements, bringing a wide range of performers together in a fun and caring environment.”

Its repertoire blends contemporary favourites with traditional choral arrangements, creating unique harmonies that appeal to both performers and audiences. From Stairway to Heaven and Time After Time to Stand by Me, Viva La Vida and A Thousand Years, familiar songs are reimagined with special arrangements that allow every singer to shine.

What truly sets HHSG apart is its commitment to being a safe, nonjudgemental haven. The group is built on strong values: inclusivity, joy, respect, community and growth. Singing is about enjoyment, not perfection. Every voice matters and learning is embraced at every level.

HHSG is also proudly listed as a notfor-profit organisation. This allows the group to apply for grants and funding, keeping costs low and ensuring accessibility for members. With rehearsals held on Monday nights from 7pm at the Ningi Community Hall, HHSG is designed to suit people with busy daytime commitments, from working professionals, young mums, university students and retirees alike. The goal is simple: have fun, feel welcome and enjoy the shared experience of singing.

As the Member for Pumicestone, community safety is one of my highest priorities and I know how important it is that families feel safe where they live. I welcome the early signs that Queensland is moving in the right direction under the Crisafulli Government’s plan to restore safety, with the number of victims of crime down 6.5% per capita this year.

Just as importantly, the government has restored transparency and accountability by being upfront with Queenslanders when police identified issues with previous data. While there is still more work to do, these early results are encouraging, with almost 3000 youth offenders charged for more than 14,000 offences under the landmark Adult Crime, Adult Time laws. I will continue to support strong, sensible measures that put community safety first and help make Pumicestone a safer place to live.

Finding the right harmony

Harmony Haven Singing Group was born from a lifelong love of music, community and connection.

For Frances Hiam, singing director of the newly launched group, singing has always been more than a pastime, it has been a constant thread woven through her life. That journey began many years ago, singing and performing in churches and festivals and later developing her voice with the guidance of a singing coach. What started as personal growth soon grew into something bigger.

Frances formed her own choir in Hervey Bay, discovering immense fulfilment in watching singers grow in confidence, skill and joy.

“Seeing people step into their voices and become real performers was incredibly rewarding,” she said.

In 2023, Frances and her husband Peter moved to Ningi, where they joined a local choir together. Frances took on the role of assistant choir director

singing in everyday life and said the health and social benefits are very important and greatly valued. With more than 40 enthusiastic members preparing for the group’s 2026 launch, the atmosphere is buzzing. HHSG has also secured the services of a professional singer to support performances, vocal workshops and coaching sessions, further enhancing the experience for members.

“The level of excitement and anticipation in our new members is palpable,” she said. “We have a happy vibe going on and everybody loves our songs and the special arrangements we have to make everybody shine.

“My husband Peter who describes himself as “just a shower singer”, puts it best: “You don’t have to be a great singer to have a great time. When you nail a song together, it feels incredible.

The sense of belonging is profound”.”

For anyone considering joining, Frances has a simple message: if you like singing, meeting new people and being part of a fun, welcoming group, Harmony Haven Singing Group is waiting for you. A sign-on night will be held on January 19, 2026 (7pm-8pm), at the Ningi Community Hall, with rehearsals running every Monday from 7–8.30pm at 1320 Bribie Island Road.

Harmony Haven isn’t about being perfect – it’s about belonging, harmony and the joy of raising voices together.

Teens charged with A 14-year-old Wamuran boy has been with nine offences including multiple property charged two counts of enter dwelling and commit and one count each of receiving property and unlawful use of a crime charges tainted motor vehicle. He was due to reappear Court on January 5.

Five teenagers have been charged following investigations into several property offences in the Moreton and Brisbane areas last month.

It was alleged that between December 8 and 21, the group were involved in the theft of property from six different businesses at Morayfield, Rothwell, Mango Hill, Narangba and Brisbane City.

It was also alleged that four of the teenagers broke into a house on Hemsworth Street, Acacia Ridge overnight on Friday December 19 and stole a black Subaru Outback.

Two of the boys allegedly also broke into a house on Falcon Street, Burpengary East between 10pm on Saturday December 20 and 3am on Sunday December 21, stealing personal property and a white Mazda CX-8.

It will be further alleged the Mazda was involved in a traffic crash about 2.15am Sunday December 21 on Fraser Drive, Burpengary East, before two teenage boys were taken into custody near Harvey Court and Waterside Esplanade.

Wagging tails, paws and turning pages

By Sheree Hoddinett A wagging tail and a fluffy listening ear are helping children across the City of Moreton Bay fall in love with reading, one page at a time.

For the past six years, City of Moreton Bay Libraries has proudly partnered with Story Dogs, a heart-warming program that pairs children with gentle, trained dogs who listen as they read aloud.

What might seem like a simple idea has transformed the reading experience for countless local kids.

Scout the Story Dog has been busy at Burpengary Library, setting tongues wagging with his calm and tender nature, which is already proving to be a hit amongst budding readers.

Scout’s handler Narelle Mannaert said the five-year-old Border Collie was changing young lives one reading session at a time.

“The parents and kids love Scout and are impressed with how well behaved and calm he is,” she said. “He loves being patted. And for the kids who are a bit unsure about dogs, he will roll over and let them rub his tummy. He’ll even give high fives and handshakes sometimes.

“At the end of each session the kids can choose a Story Dog bookmark and a Scout sticker.”

Ms Mannaert said Scout was a regular visitor to several different places, where he was always a welcome sight.

“I always tell people Scout is from the couch potato line of Border Collies,” she said. “Since he was a puppy, I have taken him to the local aged care facility and my brother’s disabled home. He has also been going to school pick up since he was 12 weeks old, so he is used to all the kids exiting the school in a rush when the bell goes.”

The clever canine began his Story Dogs journey back in June and fast became a star student.

“When we first started at the school, the kids would say ‘I can't read, you know’ and I would just say ‘That's okay, neither can Scout’,” Ms Mannaert said. “Scout does not judge a child's reading ability.

The kids love to pat Scout while they are reading - he is like a big fluffy and soft sensory tool. As a team we try to make reading fun and not stressful.”

When children read to a dog, the outcomes are amazing. Through the unconditional love of a furry friend, children are discovering that reading can be fun, empowering and full of joy.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said he was delighted the long-running partnership between Story Dogs and council’s libraries continued to have such a profound impact on nurturing young minds.

“When children are able to read to a dog, the outcomes are inspirational,” he said.

“There’s something incredibly calming about reading to a dog. They’re naturally accepting and non-judgemental and this helps children relax, focus and build their confidence. It’s great to see Scout settle

The program offers 15-to-20-minute individual reading sessions for families and is often booked weeks out in advance due to its soaring popularity.

The City of Moreton Bay is on track to become home to one million people in the next 30 years, with a new report showing what it will take to make that future prosperous, connected and sustainable.

A new economic white paper, Towards One Million: Our Moment of Opportunity, developed by the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) in partnership with City of Moreton Bay, strengthens the evidence for council's recent City of Tomorrow Strategy, which sets the framework for coordinated action across all levels of government, industry, education and community.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the report was a wake-up call for collective action.

“Growth is inevitable, but success is not. This report makes it clear that if we want a city that’s not just growing, but thriving, we need to act now,” Mayor Flannery said. “We have a once-ina-generation opportunity to shape a future where people can live, work and prosper locally. That means planning for high-value jobs, better connectivity and a resilient economy that benefits everyone.”

The report shows that achieving this vision will require deliberate planning and investment. Under the preferred scenario, City of Moreton Bay would lift its Gross Regional Product per capita from $45,828 to $77,366 at today’s values, create 402,000 local jobs and more than double the number of local businesses. This transformation will position City of Moreton Bay as a competitive economic hub within southeast Queensland, while preserving 75% of the city’s land for natural and productive landscapes.

UniSC Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Helen Bartlett said the research showed that strategic choices today would determine whether City of Moreton Bay becomes a truly competitive, connected and liveable city.

“Moreton Bay’s growing population requires a pipeline of skilled workers, particularly across engineering, information and communications technology, science, early childhood, aged care and social assistance – which is exactly why UniSC established a campus at Petrie in 2020,” she said.

“National and international companies are moving to City of Moreton Bay and telling us that they need skills and talent to ensure that growth is not just in the size of the population, but also in the prosperity and quality of life for residents."

The report identifies five economic imperatives: productive growth, polycentric planning, growing and attracting talent, accelerating innovation and building resilience. These priorities will ensure City of Moreton Bay stands out as the place to accelerate a career, pioneer a new venture, leverage innovation, expand a business into new markets, attract forward-thinking investors and enjoy a thriving family life.

How the Albanese government’s inaction fuelled the Bondi massacre

In the golden haze of a Sydney summer evening, where the waves of Bondi Beach usually whisper promises of leisure and light, the first night of Hanukkah turned into a nightmare of gunfire and grief. On December 14, 2025, at least 16 souls – including a child and Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman – were gunned down in a brazen terrorist attack targeting a joyful Jewish community gathering.

Two gunmen, identified as a father-son duo from Sydney’s southwest – with one, Naveed Akram, bearing a name that echoes the radical undercurrents they’ve long simmered in – unleashed hell on families lighting menorahs by the sea.

This wasn’t random violence; it was a calculated strike against Jewish Australians, the latest and deadliest eruption of antisemitism that has festered unchecked under the Albanese Government’s watchful, yet woefully inert, eye.

As emergency sirens wailed and blood stained the sand, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it a “dark moment for our nation”. Dark? It’s a catastrophe of his own making. For months, even years, voices – from Jewish community leaders to the sharp-eyed commentators on Sky News – have sounded the alarm on the rising tide of antisemitic hate, fuelled by unchecked Islamist extremism and emboldened by government timidity. Yet, what has Canberra done? Whispered platitudes, appointed envoys who shuffle papers, and turned a blind eye to the radical marches clogging our streets with chants of division.

Consider the rot: Since the Gaza conflict ignited global tensions in late 2023, antisemitic incidents in Australia have skyrocketed to nearly five times pre-October levels, with more than 1654 attacks recorded in the year to September 2025 alone – including arsons on synagogues and death threats scrawled on childcare centres. Jewish students cower on campuses, nurses in public hospitals mutter vows of harm against Jewish patients and synagogues burn while pro-Palestine rallies – often laced with Islamist fervour – march unmolested. ASIO’s Mike Burgess has branded antisemitism Australia’s top “threat to life”, warning of foreign meddling from Iran and homegrown radicals exploiting our fault lines.

Sky News hosts like Sharri Markson and Chris Kenny have hammered this home, demanding Muslim leaders unequivocally condemn the hate – a call echoed in reports of pan-Islamist cells plotting national conferences amid chilling spy warnings. The government? It ignored them, prioritising “community cohesion” over cracking down on the radicals in our midst.

And let’s not mince words: this inaction has a name – appeasement. When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu penned a stark letter to Albanese in August, decrying Australia’s recognition of a Palestinian state as “pouring fuel on the antisemitic fire” and emboldening threats to Jewish Aussies, the response

Netanyahu didn’t hold back after this senseless attack, blasting the PM for “replacing weakness with weakness”, allowing the “cancer cells” of hate to metastasize until they exploded on Bondi Beach. Expelling a handful of Iranian diplomats in August was a performative gesture – a band-aid on a gaping wound – while radical marches continue to glorify violence and synagogues hunker under police guard. The Special Envoy’s “Plan to Combat Antisemitism”, touted as a blueprint, reads like a wish list: more consultations, vague endorsements of global guidelines, but precious little on deporting agitators or banning groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir that ASIO flags as existential threats.

Worse still, while antisemitism rages – with Jewish families now drilling evacuation routes like it’s wartime Europe – the average Aussie who dares voice concerns about Islamist radicalism is branded Islamophobic, silenced by a media-government complex terrified of “offense”. Speak out against the unchecked influx of ideologies that breed division and you’re the bigot. But ignore the synagogue fire bombings and you’re “tolerant”. This double standard isn’t just hypocritical; it’s deadly. It muzzles the man on the street while radicals plot in plain sight.

This isn’t an Australian anomaly; it’s a global tragedy scripted in every nation that’s flung open its doors to unvetted Muslim and Islamic refugees without demanding assimilation. From Sweden’s no-go zones, where parallel societies enforce Sharia over secular law, to France’s banlieues simmering with riots and radical mosques, to Germany’s skyrocketing antisemitic assaults post-2015 migrant wave – the pattern is clear: without enforced integration, open arms invite not gratitude, but ghettos of grievance, chasing death and destruction. Refugees arrive, but too many reject the host nation’s values – secularism, equality, the rule of law – opting instead for imported tensions that fracture communities and ignite violence. Australia’s naivety mirrors Europe’s folly: we celebrate multiculturalism as a virtue but forget it’s

a two-way street. When one side refuses to yield, the traffic pileup is inevitable and the wreckage is human lives.

Sky News saw it coming. Their relentless coverage – from exposés on Islamist cells to pleas for Muslim condemnation of hate – was a clarion call the Albanese regime tuned out. Commentators warned of the “ever-present threat” to Jewish lives, the explosion of attacks since the Israel-Hamas war, the failure to heed ASIO’s alerts on foreign-directed antisemitism. Ignored! Now, as rabbis are laid to rest and children mourn parents, the blood of Bondi stains the hands of those in power. This government – soft on radicals, savage on critics – has forfeited its moral authority. It’s time for accountability: ban the hate marches, vet the extremists, enforce assimilation and listen to the warnings before the next menorah is lit in fear.

Australia deserves better than platitudes and panels.

We deserve safety – for Jews, for all. The Albanese era of equivocation ends here or the beaches will run red again.

Beat up batteries carelessly tossed in the bin are causing headaches for City of Moreton Bay’s waste facility workers.

As we dive into a new year, council is calling on residents to dispose of old batteries the right way as it faces an average of 12 batteryrelated fires a month at its waste facilities due to incorrect disposal by residents.

Used general household and rechargeable batteries – including lithium batteries - can now be dropped off at any one of City of Moreton Bay’s waste facilities, making safe disposal even easier over the festive season.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said batteries were not a simple throwaway item and should be treated as hazardous.

“First and foremost, batteries and Christmas waste don’t mix. When thrown into household or recycling bins, they pose serious fire risks during collection and processing which has led to more than 200 fires across Queensland in the past year alone,” he said. “In Moreton Bay, our contracted trucks have dealt with some 17 ‘hot load’ events between November 2023 and November 2025 which have resulted in either fire, smoke or chemical incidents.

We’ve also seen dangerous spot fires erupt at our waste facilities, which are caused by batteries hiding in general waste being compacted during the landfill process. “By taking your batteries to one of our waste facilities or a designated drop off point, you can do your part to reduce the risk of fires and keep our staff safe.”

Helping to drive home the safe battery disposal message is council’s new ‘Don’t Bin your Batteries’ campaign.

“There’s any number of e-scooters, kids’ toys, power tools and phones that contain lithium batteries which can become a ticking time bomb if they are just thrown into your bin,” Mayor Flannery said. “They can spark fires, cause toxic gas emissions and lead to environmental harm. “Ultimately, we want people to remember to bin smart and stay safe. With all of our waste facilities now accepting batteries and a number of local disposal points offered throughout Moreton Bay, let’s do the right thing.”

In addition to council’s waste facilities, residents can also take loose batteries to local disposal points, including Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and Bunnings.

A roadside escape for kangaroos in use after successful field trails

City of Moreton Bay is jumping into another innovative wildlife preservation initiative, with the introduction of roadside escapes for kangaroos following a successful field trial of roadside hatches to reduce koala fatalities.

These hatches are a one-way egress device - allowing wildlife to quickly escape from road corridors to nearby bushland while ensuring they can’t re-enter. Developed by local business Endeavour Veterinary Ecology (EVE), with support from council following extensive scientific trials, the Fauna Escape Hatch is tailored for species that naturally push through or under barriers and allows animals of all shapes and sizes to pass through easily.

To reduce road accidents involving kangaroos, council is working with EVE to trial their new macropod adapted hatches at three locations on Bribie Island – a collision hotspot. Council is also trialling another four internally designed macropod hatches at the coastal community.

The trial of the hatches to accommodate kangaroos and wallabies comes after council undertook a world-first trial of EVE’s fauna escape hatch, rolling out 16 of the devices at wildlife-vehicle collision hotspots across the city for last year’s koala breeding season, a time when the endangered species is on the move and at risk of vehicle strikes.

Camera monitoring at two sites revealed koalas using the one-way hatch to get out of the road corridor and into bushland – as well as other native wildlife, including echidnas. During the 12-month trial, no koala fatalities were recorded at wildlife crossings where the fauna hatches had been installed on roadside fencing.

Mayor Peter Flannery said council was excited about the installation of the larger hatches, which would allow macropod species to safely exit the roadway.

“Following the promising results of our

world-first trial, we are not only looking at where we can install more hatches but how we can use them to protect other native species and road users,” he said. “Kangaroos and wallabies, like the koala, have substantial populations in the City of Moreton Bay, so we are thrilled that EVE and our council team have both designed hatches to accommodate these larger species.”

Council also recently completed erecting fauna fencing around Avon Avenue on Bribie Island where kangaroos regularly hop onto roads.

Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige said the fencing would prevent kangaroos and wallabies from ending up in the path of motorists.

“The new fauna fencing and large hatches will help protect both wildlife and drivers on Bribie Island,” she said.

“While this green infrastructure will prevent kangaroos and wallabies from crossing the road, we still need drivers to slow down and stay alert for wildlife.”

EVE Technology Manager, Natasha Banville, said their new hatch was an adapted version of the original, which had been put through rigorous testing to ensure it was effective and didn’t cause harm to koalas or other wildlife.

“When we designed our fauna escape hatch, we always had in the back of our minds that it was never going to be just for koalas,” she said. “We’ve seen echidnas, bandicoots and possums interact with the hatch and now we’ve been able to alter its design to cater for macropods.

“This is really exciting to see a simple but effective device born in southeast Queensland having a real-world impact that could extend Australia-wide.”

Council also installs seasonal signs in key wildlife collision hotpots across the city’s local road network, advising drivers about the increased risk of encountering wildlife on road during peak wildlife breeding and dispersal times.

Fresh leadership, fresh future: Caboolture Snakes begin a new era

By Chase Christensen The Caboolture Snakes have long been regarded as a heavyweight club across multiple sporting codes, boasting a proud history filled with premiership success. However, the 2025 season proved challenging at the junior representative level. The club failed to reach a grand final in the junior international divisions, from under 13 to under 17, with their only grand final appearance coming in the open women’s competition, where they fell short of victory.

Rather than shy away from a disappointing year, the club has confronted it head on. A completely new junior board has been appointed, led by David Reynolds as junior president and Heidi Wecker as treasurer, signalling a decisive shift in leadership and direction.

Early signs suggest the rebuild is already gaining momentum. Ariana visited the headspace satellite centre Bribie Island

The headspace team provide free mental health support to all young people aged 12-25 who present mild to moderate complexities.

Their team was recently asked the following question: What if we could radically transform the way we look at mental health?

UNSW Big Anxiety Research Centre offered headspace satellite centre Bribie Island the possibility to take part in the Edge of The Present (EOTP) project.

The research study aims to evaluate the impact of mixed reality experiences on mood, wellbeing and future thinking.

The study is open to young people aged 12-25, who can experience multiple landscapes designed to be aweinspiring and mesmerising.

There are two surveys that must be completed prior and post the experience to evaluate improvements or changes on young people's moods. Researchers want to understand whether this VR experience can increase positive moods and reduce negative thinking in adolescents and young adults.

UNSW has organised VR to travel between all Youturn headspace centres and it's now available in the headspace satellite centre Bribie Island.

Busy road upgrade begins

By Sheree Hoddinett It’s going to be a long process, but the first step in a line of upgrade work for the super busy Caboolture River Road is underway.

Ageing car park facilities at Morayfield State School are already being transformed as part of City of Moreton Bay’s much-anticipated improvements to Caboolture River Road. This work forms part of the broader Caboolture River Road upgrade, jointly funded under the Southeast Queensland City Deal Growth Area Compact.

The 60-space facility, supported by a new student drop-off and pick-up zone, will also feature an internal zebra crossing and path to provide families with safer access to parked vehicles.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the car park improvements would mark the start of onsite construction activities along the 1.2km section of Caboolture River Road from Morayfield Road to Grant Road.

The upgrade will involve: • Widening Caboolture River Road between Grant Road and Morayfield Road to provide two traffic lanes in each direction (four lanes in total) with a central median.

• Installing additional traffic turning lanes at key intersections.

• Installing new traffic lights at the intersection of Amy and Kenneth Streets.

• Upgrading the existing traffic lights at Grant Road and Morayfield Road.

• Changing access at Ben Street and Lorebury Drive to left in/left out only.

• Installing new cycling and pedestrian paths on both sides of the road.

Delivered as part of the SEQ City Deal Growth Area Compact, the project is a partnership jointly funded by the Queensland Government and City of Moreton Bay, with Economic Development Queensland overseeing GAC delivery. The Queensland Government is providing $71 million towards the project, with City of Moreton

Bay contributing $10 million.

Mayor Flannery said this crucial part of the city’s road network would be upgraded from two to four lanes over the next few years and when complete would make a huge difference for the thousands of people who rely on it daily.

Division 3 Councillor Adam Hain said the upgrade would mean a wider road footprint.

“To accommodate this, some land adjacent to the existing Caboolture River Road is required to be repurposed for project works, including along the school’s frontage,” Cr Hain said. “These necessary changes, along with the new signalised intersection to be established at Kenneth Street, presented the perfect opportunity for the car park to be included within our project. Complete with its accessible parking bays and tactile indicators for the vision impaired, it will better meet the requirements of all students and their families.”

Funding boost to help preserve history

An interactive time capsule that tells the story of Moreton Bay’s early European settlers for generations will be able to continue its mission after a funding boost from council.

City of Moreton Bay has granted $140,000 per annum over three years to support operations at the Caboolture Historical Village.

Caboolture Historical Society (CHS), which manages the Caboolture Historical Village, will utilise the funding to ensure the village continues to provide a place of education for students and the broader community. During the time of funding, CHS will develop and provide to council a new business and marketing plan outlining how they will continue to engage the community and grow visitation to the village while improving their financial sustainability.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said it was important that Moreton Bay’s rich history continued to be preserved and passed on to future generations.

“With more than 80 buildings and 110,000 museum pieces, including structures, council understands and appreciates the immense cultural value that the Caboolture Historical Village has provided our community for decades,” he said. “Moreton Bay is experiencing an unprecedented era of growth and transformation, but it is important to celebrate the history on display.”

Division 3 Councillor Adam Hain said the village was an essential part of the fabric of Caboolture and a tourism drawcard.

“Not only does the village proudly preserve local heritage through exhibitions, collections and interactive displays, it also offers educational experiences and hosts community events,” he said. “Even though we have the wonders of technology available at the touch of a button, the village remains an important reminder of our humble beginnings as a community. “We want the village to succeed and this funding goes some way to helping them do that.”

Caboolture Historical Society President Greg Raedel hailed the funding boost as a vote of confidence in the important role the historical village played in City of Moreton Bay. “This investment helps us with building sustainability for the next three years and it gives us a good foundation,” he said. “It’s the culmination of a lot of work by the council and our local councillor, Adam Hain, and the team at council that has managed to get this for us which is a fantastic result.”

Mr Raedel said the village provided an insight into Caboolture’s agricultural roots, where dairy, timber and sugar once flourished.

More than 9000 school children tour the village each year, with volunteers providing demonstrations of old equipment used by early European settlers.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest outlook for the remainder of summer 202526 (through to the end of February) continues to point to above-average temperatures across southeast Queensland, with a high likelihood of extended hot spells and overnight warmth that doesn’t let the soil cool down. Rainfall remains uncertain - some models favour wetter than normal conditions along the coast, while others suggest periods of dry heat. Either way, gardeners should focus on heat and humidity tolerant plants, generous mulching and efficient watering practices to keep roots cool and moist on our sandy soils.

Bribie Island & Moreton Bay fishing report: Summer bites heating up As we settle into the new year, anglers around Bribie Island and Moreton Bay are enjoying classic Queensland summer conditions - warm waters, plenty of bait and a reliable mix of estuary and reef species. Recent reports highlight strong whiting action on the flats, solid snapper from shallow reefs and consistent bream in the channels and canals. With settled weather windows opening up, it's prime time for both shore-based and boat anglers to chase table fare. Let's break down the latest catches, tips for the season, top beach spots and key launch points.

Recent bites: What's on the chew?

The bay has been productive despite variable weather, with whiting leading the charge in good numbers across the Amity Banks, Rous Channel and closer inshore areas like Donnybrook and Lime Pocket. Use wrigglers or bloodworms for best results. Bream are schooling thick in the Newport canals and around Bribie structures - surface lures and lightly weighted plastics are proving deadly.

Snapper remains a highlight, with quality fish coming from shallow reefs, the Bribie fish cages and in close around the islands. Fresh yakkas or pilchards are top baits, though sharks can be a nuisance - move spots if they show up.

By Roger Small The 2027 Men's Rugby World Cup in Australia marks a historic expansion to 24 teams — the first time the tournament grows beyond 20 — introducing six pools of four and a new Round of 16 knockout stage. Running from October 1 to November 13 across cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle and Townsville, this format promises more matches, greater inclusivity for emerging nations and heightened drama.

Current World Rugby men's rankings (as of late 2025) position the favourites: 1. South Africa 2. New Zealand 3 .England 4. Ireland 5. France 6. Argentina followed by Australia (7th), Fiji (8th), Scotland (9th) and Italy (10th).

The pools, drawn in December 2025, feature blockbuster clashes: Pool A: New Zealand, Australia (hosts), Chile, Hong Kong China (debutants) Pool B: South Africa, Italy, Georgia, Romania Pool C: Argentina, Fiji, Spain, Canada Pool D: Ireland, Scotland, Uruguay, Portugal

New Zealand and the trans-Tasman rivalry in Pool A add spice, while Northern Hemisphere sides — particularly an in-form England, consistent France and Ireland — pose serious threats. Hosts Australia could ride home crowds for surprises and tier-two nations like Fiji, Portugal, and Georgia may spring upsets in the expanded format.

With more teams reaching knockouts (top two per pool, plus best four thirds), expect unpredictability, fierce rivalries and potential shifts in global rugby power. The 2027 World Cup looks set to be the most competitive and exciting yet.

By Roger Small The 2025-26 Ashes series between Australia and England has been a rollercoaster of dominance, disappointment, and debate, with Australia retaining the urn after a commanding 3-0 start, before England clawed back a stunning two-day victory in the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). As the series heads to the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the focus remains on England’s systemic failures, scathing player critiques, contentious pitch conditions leading to abbreviated matches, and the hefty financial toll on Cricket Australia (CA).

Australia's early supremacy was evident from the outset. They clinched the first Test in Perth, which ended prematurely after just two days, followed by convincing wins in the second and third Tests, including an 82-run victory in Adelaide. England’s woes were compounded by poor preparation and execution. Captain Ben Stokes admitted the team struggled under pressure, while head coach Brendon McCullum conceded that his “Bazball” philosophy—emphasising aggressive play—had faltered, acknowledging inadequate readiness for Australian conditions. Former England skipper Alastair Cook labelled the campaign a “mess”, criticising the lack of attention to detail in batting and fielding. Players like Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope drew ire for inconsistent performances, with critics calling England's approach “spineless” and riddled with self-inflicted errors, such as brainless shot selections and dropped catches.

The fourth Test at the MCG, however, provided a rare highlight for England, snapping a 15-year winless streak in Australia with a chaotic two-day shootout. Chasing a modest target

after bowling Australia out for 132 in their second innings, England’s Jacob Bethell starred in the victory, but the match’s brevity sparked outrage. Stokes was “brutally honest”, calling the pitch “not ideal” and suggesting it would “unleash hell” if prepared elsewhere.

Australia’s Steve Smith echoed this, blaming excessive grass for undue seam movement that made batting a lottery.

Michael Vaughan deemed it “unfair”, while Cook branded it “sub-standard”.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) rated the MCG surface “unsatisfactory”, noting it favoured bowlers excessively, with 36 wickets tumbling in under 142 overs. Curator Matt Page expressed shock and accepted blame, vowing “never again” for such a debacle. Yet, some, like Guardian columnist Geoff Lemon, argued sloppy cricket from both sides amplified the pitch issues, not excused them.

These short games have hammered CA’s finances. The Perth Test’s early finish cost around $5 million in lost revenue, while the MCG fiasco created a $25 million hole, including gate receipts, broadcasting and sponsorships. Overall, the truncated matches have drained up to $15 million, exacerbating CA’s $11 million loss in the 2024-25 financial year. CEO Todd Greenberg called short Tests “bad for business”, hinting at interventions in pitch preparation to ensure longer, more marketable contests.

As the SCG finale looms, England’s consolation win offers faint hope, but the series underscores deeper flaws in their strategy. For Australia, Marnus Labuschagne warned the “job isn't done”, despite retaining the Ashes.

Ultimately, this Ashes edition highlights cricket’s precarious balance between thrilling unpredictability and commercial viability, leaving me, the fans - and coffers- short-changed.

Work set to start on new clubhouse project Construction will soon begin on new clubhouse facilities at Caboolture Rugby League Club.

The new clubhouse will replace the Caboolture Snakes’ ageing headquarters, benefiting the 2000 players and spectators who use the grounds. City of Moreton Bay Council has also awarded a tender for construction. Mayor Peter Flannery said the $14.5 million project was significant, with works over two stages to transform the community sports facility.

“Our residents absolutely love rugby league and the new clubhouse facilities will make rugby league in Caboolture more enjoyable and accessible for everyone, helping grow participation in this popular local sport,” he said.

“The project includes upgrading of infrastructure, including water and sewer infrastructure, which will benefit co-located clubs and enable future expansion of the precinct to further facilitate a whole-community approach to local sport.”

Mayor Flannery said the upgrade would also benefit other sporting groups, including the table tennis club and local boxing club.

“The new facility will also be more inclusive, with a host of features that allow people with disability to stay in the game including accessible public amenities, seating, kitchen facilities and scoring booth,” he said. “We look forward to construction getting underway on this highly anticipated clubhouse project.”

Delivered in two stages, the project will deliver a host of new facilities including club offices, change rooms, public amenities, kitchen, canteen and tiered outdoor seating for spectators.

The project will benefit from $3 million in funding from the federal government through its Investing in Our Communities (IiOC) program.

Division 3 Councillor Adam Hain said the redevelopment of the Caboolture Snakes’ ageing facilities would be a game-changer for the community.

“I am so excited about this project after a decade of hard work from our staff, past and present club committees, this major upgrade is set to come to fruition and ignite huge excitement around rugby league in Caboolture,” Cr Hain said. “The new facilities will benefit the players who use the grounds and also provide a better game day experience for spectators.

“This significant project will transform this community sports facility, with the construction of fully accessible change rooms to ensure our female teams are better catered for, club offices, canteen and gym area.”

Stage 1 of the Caboolture Rugby League Clubhouse project is due for completion in early 2027, while Stage 2 is expected to be finished in mid-2028, weather permitting.
