COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT KRISHNA CLUB

Krishna Club started a new year in January. The classes are a mix of those who attended last year and also some new children joining. The theme this year is “Krishna’s Pastimes” where stories from Krishna Book will be learnt systematically through various activities. The children are also continuing to practice kirtan with each child having an opportunity to lead and play instruments, learn slokas, etc. An addition this year has been a monthly yoga session as part of the class. On Sunday 26th January, qualified yoga instructor, Amanda Teeha, and assistant, Jigna Chauhan, led a fun and interactive 45-minute yoga session tailored for children which was intertwined with Krishna Conscious story-telling. 8

DEITY DEPARTMENT VASANT PANCHAMI Wednesday 29th January Vasant Panchami marks the beginning of spring. The sastric instruction is that on the fifth day of the waxing moon, one should celebrate the arrival of spring in Vrindavana by offering many types of flowers to Krishna. Inspired by this festival which is celebrated with great beauty in ISKCON temples in India, flowers were sponsored and extra flower garlands and ornaments made for a special Vasant Panchami darshan for Their Lordships’ pleasure. The beautiful darshan also inspired the outfit to henceforth be called “Vasanta Rasa”. “It’s lovely to be able to celebrate these smaller festivals whenever there is an opportunity by decorating Their Lordships with extra flower offerings for a special darshan. Despite a long day at work, it was very blissful coming into the Pujari in the evening for a few hours to make some of these flower offerings for our Most-Beautiful Lordships, Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara. It is always a beautiful and absorbing experience.” Devaki devi dasi

KRISHNA’S COWS Tarun Krishna dasa, who heads up the Krishna’s Cows project, has been meeting regularly with Sita Rama dasa, the director of the Ahimsa Dairy Foundation, which is a farm based in Rutland. They both have been agreeing ways in which ISKCON-London and the Ahimsa Dairy Foundation can work together. It was agreed that the Ahimsa Dairy Foundation would start delivering 80 litres of milk per week to the ISKCON-London Deity Department to use in the bhoga offerings cooked for Their Lordships, such as Their mangal sweets offering. This means that along with the milk bought from the Manor, all of Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara’s liquid milk needs are now being met by milk from protected cows. This is a wonderful achievement. The move to ahimsa will cost ISKCON-London an extra £15,000 this year. Next year, the Temple desire all of the milk products used for Their Lordships to be ahimsa, which will cost an extra £30,000. This is an investment the Temple is prepared to make as scriptures inform that Their Lordships are happier drinking milk from protected cows. If you would like to donate to help cover these costs, please contact Tarun Krishna dasa at tkd@iskcon.london Krishna’s Cows also has a lively WhatsApp group where current and future developments are communicated. If you would like to join, please email the above address. In other developments, the Krishna’s Cows team have been working on securing funding from Erasmus+, a European body that funds community projects. The team also required a laptop for one devotee to work on which was promptly donated by a devotee, Ankit, which they are very grateful for. 9

FINANCE There have been a few changes in the Finance department this year. Long-time serving Financial Controller, Ram Charan dasa, retired last year leaving a legacy of dedication and devotion. His commitment to providing accurate financial information for management as well as mentoring devotees on their spiritual path will be remembered. ISKCON-London would like to thank Ram Charan dasa for all his dedicated services rendered throughout the many years. Michelle Tchoukov has been appointed as the new Financial Controller. The Finance department have been working hard to automate processes and move towards a paperless system. There have been a few teething problems but they have successfully implemented a paperless system where invoices are emailed to finance and filed electronically. They are also implementing a paperless system for timesheets. These changes help the Finance department to work more efficiently and makes it easier for devotees to submit timesheets anywhere, anytime – as long as they have WiFi access! There have also been some refurbishments to the Finance office which is looking much better, brighter and bigger! It should be complete with desks by the end of March. The Finance department would like to thank all the devotees who were involved with the refurbishment project for their hard work and time and also for the kind donation of the new wooden flooring.

FOOD FOR LIFE

ISKCON-London have generously provided the Food for Life (FFL) team with a temporary new van to drive to the food distribution point whilst the team wait for the new FFL electric van. The electric van is currently in the process of being converted into a bespoke tailored food van to help feed the homeless in a more efficient, effective and hygienic way.

LONDON COLLEGE OF VEDIC STUDIES In January, Radha Mohan dasa facilitated the Secrets of the Vedic Universe course. This course took a detailed look at the Vedic perspective of the Universe, exploring the topic of creation in the Vedic texts, astronomy of the Bhagavad Purana, and understanding the multidimensional Universe of the Vedas.

In February, the Unlock the Mysteries of the Bhagavad Gita Course started. This is a five-session course taking place every Saturday until April and is taught by resident monk, Dayal Mora dasa. This introductory course exploring the Bhagavad-Gita looks at the nature of the soul, karma, reincarnation, and the benefits of bhakti yoga.

“The Bhaktivedanta Institute explores the interface of modern science and technology with the spiritual traditions of the world, especially those from India. I was particularly drawn to Sadaputa dasa’s (Dr Richard Thomson) books about Vedic Cosmography which addressed the need to explain the Fifth Canto of the Srimad-Bhagavatam and other scriptures in a way that could be appreciated by the modern mindset and academics in particular. I feel that it is important for many people today to see that such ancient scriptures are not sentimental or mythological, but saturated in a high level of both spiritual and scientific knowledge. The College of Vedic Studies at ISKCON-London asked me to deliver a day-long seminar on Vedic Universe. I found the students were diverse, intelligent, and genuinely interested in what I had to say. The hours flew past! The assistance I received from devotees at the Temple itself was greatly appreciated and I hope the students enjoyed the day as much as I did.” Radha Mohan dasa, Secrets of the Vedic Universe Course Facilitator

OUTREACH The New Year started with an unexpectedly high number of newcomers attending the outreach programmes and joining the brahmacaris in their activities in the Temple and outside. This was likely the result of the book distribution efforts during the month of December for the Srila Prabhupada Christmas Marathon. The Fortunate People Party decided to try to keep the spirit of the marathon up and commit to six days of book distribution a week for the whole year. On Wednesday 19th February, the Outreach team were asked by the Kingston University Krishna Consciousness Society to perform kirtan at the Medication vs Meditation debate held at the University. The programme was successful, and in response to that, a few students attended Wisdom Wednesdays the week after. The preaching schedule (Wisdom Wednesdays, Thoughtful Thursdays, Fortunate Fridays, Secrets from the East) has been enhanced by the addition of a new programme named Spiritual Technologies which provides selfdevelopment through introspection, contemplation and application. Held on Thursday evenings and facilitated by Shyam Govinda dasa, the programme is a group study of Bhagavad-Gita followed by japa meditation training. It is intended for Wisdom Wednesday regulars who are interested in deepening their commitment to bhakti yoga and who are willing to acquire the tools necessary for a daily spiritual practice. To stay updated on all newcomer events, follow the Facebook page, Bhakti Yoga London:

INDIA RETREAT On Friday 24th January, Dayal Mora dasa and Shyam Govinda dasa left for the India Bhakti Retreat which was organised with the help of Champakalata Priya devi dasi. The retreat group was composed of 24 people in total, comprising mainly regulars from the Wisdom Wednesdays and Mantra Lounge programmes. Over the sixteen days, the group visited the ISKCON Juhu temple in Mumbai, the Govardhan Eco Village just outside Mumbai, and the holy land of Sridhama Mayapur, West Bengal. The retreat allowed all participants to deepen their interest in bhakti, to daily experience ecstatic kirtans, taste first-class prasadam, interact with protected cows, bathe in sacred rivers, associate with advanced senior devotees and swamis, ask questions and profusely discuss spiritual topics. The retreat was a full-on bhakti immersion and many reported that the retreat was life-changing overall. 16 Outreach

The team returned back from the India Bhakti Retreat on February 9th and had a debrief with Champakalata Priya devi dasi and Jai Murari devi dasi from Kirtan London, reflecting on feed back from the group and on necessary points for improvement. The team have now already started organising the next retreat in 2021, with an aim to recruit a group of enthusiastic youngsters who are regulars from their weekly programmes.

SANKIRTAN Nama Sankirtan dasa left his role as Sankirtan Leader after seven years leading sankirtan services with great dedication. With a determination to increase book distribution, each year he set new sankirtan goals, and under his leadership, he organised regular sankirtan sprints and marathons, sankirtan festivals, weekly Weekend Warriors, and encouraged many community members to participate in distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books. During the Christmas Marathons, he arranged for the Temple Room to be decorated with a sankirtan theme, and even introduced a variety of fun awards to inspire more devotees to take part in the Srila Prabhupada Christmas Marathon. He also ranked highly as a book distributor himself throughout the years, even amongst Europe. ISKCON-London would like to thank him for his exceptional service. Syama Kisore dasa and Antoine Bour are the new Sankirtan Co-Leaders and are very enthusiastic to continue growing sankirtan in London.

If you would like to invite the sankirtan team to your own town for book distribution, harinama and a house programme, please email sankirtan@iskcon.london

SPIRITUAL MENTORSHIP SYSTEM I returned home, my mum was waiting at the train station to pick me up and I was so happy. My mum said have you been on drugs or something? Haha. In December 2008, I came to the ISKCON-London temple and I felt wow this is so nice. I was so happy to see Lord Jagannatha. I couldn’t wait to come again. Q: Wow! That’s quite a story right there, so much mercy even before you came to the Temple. So, what were you doing before you came to the Temple?

In February, we sadly said goodbye to Jaga Mohini devi dasi who was in Bhava Bhakti devi dasi’s mentee group for nearly eleven years. While in the group, she progressed to becoming a mentor herself. Here is a chat Bhava Bhakti devi dasi had with Jaga Mohini devi dasi about her time at ISKCON-London. Bhava Bhakti devi dasi: Hare Krishna! I cannot believe the day has come when you leave the Temple. It’s been a long journey from Bhaktin Julia Walker to second initiated Jaga Mohini devi dasi hasn’t it? Jaga Mohini devi dasi: Yes! I first came to the Temple in December 2008. I had been reading Srila Prabhupada’s books since 2006. I had received a Bhagavad-Gita As It Is from my mum, which had belonged to my grandparents since 1975. My mum gave it to me after their passing. In Christmas 2006, I also received the Science of Self Realisation book from my son Richard, who had received it from devotees in the high streetin Fareham, Hampshire. I soon started to chant the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra after reading the books and I started to wake up earlier. I was happily following Srila Prabhupada’s instructions. I got to know in the same year there was a festival taking place in the streets of London. This was my first Rathayatra and it was amazing! I went with my friend Karen who I used to work with in a detention centre in Oxford. In Trafalgar Square, there was a book table where I bought more books and filled up my rucksack with Srila Prabhupada’s books. When 22 Spiritual Mentorship System

A: I had grown up in Oxfordshire from the age of two after my parents moved there from London. I started working from the age of 16 years doing different jobs such as sales, childminder, immigration etc. I was working for Taylor Wimpey in customer care before I came to live in the ashram. From a very young age, I loved sports, swimming, athletics, running, martial arts and scuba diving. I got married when I was 19 years old and by the time I was 22 years old, I had two children, Nick and Richard. But after 18 years of being together, I separated from my husband and moved to Southampton. I became a grandmother in my early forties! Q: That’s quite a lot of life experience right there grandma! Whoops, sorry, I mean Jaga (hahahaha). So then you came to the Temple and then what? A: After some weeks of coming to the Temple, I saw on the notice board some upcoming courses, one was the Essence of Bhagavad Gita by Ram Charan dasa, and the other was Devotional Practice by Jai Nitai dasa. It was perfect. I attended the Gita course on Saturday evening and the Devotional Practice course on Sunday morning, travelling back and forth from Southampton for just £2 on the National Express coach! I booked for many weeks in advance. I would come Saturday morning, leave Saturday night, arrive home at midnight, sleep two hours, and then get the bus Sunday morning to arrive early and class would start at 10am. After about two weeks, Jai Nitai dasa organised my stay in the ladies ashram. Wow, spiritual life really took off. After the courses finished, I continued to stay in the ashram on Saturday nights.

Aditi devi dasi was the ladies’ashram leader. I would go out on book distribution on Saturday’s, and on Sunday’s help with devotee breakfast and Sunday feast with Bhakta Chip. Q: And then you found out about the Mentorship System? A: I checked the noticeboard and saw the Counselling System (as it was known then) poster. I thought I needed to join. It said the contact was Bhava Bhakti devi dasi. It so happened she was in reception. I recognised her photo from the noticeboard. I introduced myself. My first impression was she was very jokey and happy. She said she will give me a go in her group. This was in May 2009. June was the next meeting. That first meeting was fab, and it went from there. Then my stay in the ashram became two nights. And then in May 2010, I moved into the ashram. Q: Yes, it has gone so fast from the first time we met mate and you stayed just over 10 years coming up to 11 years in my mentee group, a veteran for sure! A: Yes, I have so many wonderful memories, loving relationships with devotees, knowing that you are cared for in all ways. So much laughter, book distribution, movies of our activities, coming together on retreats and coming together in the wider community. Q: So what services were you doing at ISKCON-London? A: I was doing a number of services such as Tulasi Pujari, Ladies Ashram Leader, Temple Leadership Council member, looking after senior ladies, a mentor, book distribution, Deity worship, IES school visits, Ladies Sanga, Open Days, Gita Jayanti, cooking Sunday feasts, classes occasionally, and

23 Spiritual Mentorship System

doing the needful. Q: Such a variety of services, what did you enjoy the most? A: I enjoyed temple life so much. Ok we have difficult times, but they really do pass. The most powerful thing is to always remember Krishna and never forget Him, by chanting His holy names and good association with devotees. These two are so important. Q: Any tips for anyone looking to join the ashram later in life? A: Just do it, don’t worry, Krishna really does take care of us. Enthusiasm, confidence and patience. It really gave me so much strength. The training is invaluable, and the process really does work. Be determined, keep your focus on the goal and developing a loving relationship with Krishna. Q: Where do you go from here? A: As a senior devotee reminded me, my heart will always be sheltered at the home of Sri Sri RadhaLondonisvara and Their devotees. I will continue to serve my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, the Acaryas’ mission. In every town and village. I’ve been stopped by people here in Southampton as I continue to wear devotional clothes, such an attraction. My family are very supportive and are becoming vegetarians, they are feeling the benefit. This is the best welfare service, compassion, we give to others. Q: Thank you for your years of sincere service and no doubt there are many, many more years to come. You will be greatly missed by us all and especially by me. Hare Krishna

VOLUNTEERING GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY WEEK VOLUNTEERS APPRECIATION EVENING

On Saturday 18th January, an appreciation evening was organised for devotees who served during the Golden Anniversary Week celebrations at ISKCON-London. The evening consisted of kirtan, short talks by Jai Nitai dasa and Murli Manohara dasa, followed by devotees sharing personal realisations from their services and the celebrations that took place. It was followed by a sumptuous prasadam feast and giving of gifts.

24 Volunteering

SUNDAY FEAST Srila Prabhupada’s Sunday Love Feast is very popular in all ISKCON temples all over the world. It was originally started by Srila Prabhupada himself and he would personally cook many varieties of items and then he would personally serve it to his guests as prasadam. Sunday Feast is celebrated in a special way at ISKCON-London. Every week, a group of volunteers come together to cook the Sunday Feast led by a head cook. The food is then offered to the Lord and then distributed to all guests for free. Everything from cooking in the kitchen to washing the pots for the Sunday Feast is managed by the volunteers. The Sunday Feast team always welcomes any new volunteers and new cooks to join the team. If you would like to volunteer or want more information about the Sunday Feast, please contact Doyal Caitanya dasa on dcd@iskcon.london. Recently, dramas have been a lively addition to the Sunday Feast programme. Kavi Karnapura dasa and the drama team have been performing a different drama every week after the feast based on pastimes from the Ramayana. These dramas have been a great success with attendees as they have been very interactive. Kavi Karnapura dasa has been expert in involving the attendees in the drama so they feel part of the drama too.

SAD PASSING AWAY OF MADHUR KHERA Madhur Khera, a university student and one of our Temple volunteers, sadly passed away unexpectedly in February, aged 23. He had been doing various services over the years, including serving at Govinda’s Restaurant, and over the last 18 months weekly service in the Deity Department. He was a sincere, dedicated and humble devotee, dear to many devotees. Thank you to the devotees who prayed for Madhur from across the world, and those who came to see Madhur while he was in hospital during his final days. Devotees brought pictures of Sri Sri RadhaLondonisvara, a Srila Prabhupada chanting box, Tulasi leaves, Nrsimhadeva oil, etc. and devotees came to chant the holy names and read Bhagavad-Gita to him. We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to his family.
