The BIG Re-Think Interior Techniques in Interior Design Practices Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain and Aparajita Basu Assistants: Shail Sheth and Paramdeep Singh Dayani
Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.
Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. • Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. • Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position. • Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises
Objectory Process: The exercise emphasised on analysing the object through its geometry, proportions, sizes, scale, form, structure, ergonomics, components and kit of parts, details, materials, colours, usage, assembly and its sequence of assembly. Learning Outcome : It helped in understanding the Assembly of components to make the product function properly. The assembly of conductive and insulating material together makes the product functionable. Stage 1- Choosing the product, an house hold item to explore it to its materiality. Sequence of assembly Stage 2 - Photo analysis of the product Stage 3 - Orthographic drawings of the assembled product , understanding the scale, dimensions of the product, Stage 4 - Dismantling the product to understand the sequence of assembly of the product Stage 5 - Understanding the material property of Component Stage 6 - Exploring The sequence of assembly through exploded Isometric views
Stage 1 - Choose the object of study Image 1 - Paper cutter Image 2 - Perfume bottle Image 3 - Tri Plug These were the chosen objects for the study, we were suppose to pick objects that intrigue us, inspire us and also capture our attention.
Stage 2 - Documenting the object from all the angles and to record the various details for the exterior. The photos help us understand the details of the product. and further analyse them to create the orthographic drawings.

Week 03-04 | FD PG Common Exercises
Factory Process: Product - Magazine stand
This exercise focuses on the planning of manufacturing and Execution. The exercise revolves around exploring the ideas of the detail, assembly, tectonics and material as a central core of making. Learning outcome : It helped in understanding and Exploring-various joineries between wood and metal. How do these materials come together to achieve a particular form or geometry. Material Given : Wood- 75 x 40 x 1000 (1piece) Wood- 40 x 40 x 750 (2 piece) Metal- M.S. Sheet- 600 x 450 (18 gauge/1.2-1.5 mm thk); (1piece) Perforated MS Sheet- 600 x 450 (18 gauge/1.2-1.5 mm thk); (1piece) M.S. rod- 10 dia & length of 750; (2 piece) M.S. L angle of 25 x 25 x 750 (3mm thk) (2 piece) Mechanical fasteners such as screws, bolts etc The exercise was in a group of 3 where, the design of the stand, joineries of metal to wood, stability of the structure, designing the a strong base for the stand.
Design created by 3 group members
A combination of 3 ideas were created to develop the design of the stand. Combining the joineries to achieve a stable design Using the given material palette.

Week 05 | FD PG Module 01
Developing the Argument Brief: The exercise begins with your understanding of what is an Interior technique by examining various built projects and identifying the ones that have the potential to be taken up further for study. The selected projects are seen side by side in a matrix, with their methods of interior techniques i.e to modify, to alter, to conceal, to expose, etc. These methods can be identified in interior elements, medium/material and articulation in the whole or part of the project chosen. These projects should be selected based on the ‘role of interior designer’ across a multitude of projects: a) Historical /era centred project, b) standardised- mass customised project and c) individual identity-driven projects. Argument was be built by looking at the same methods across the projects, and various methods within the project. This helped us arriving at the final argument defined by various attributes and interior techniques.

Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer
Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02
Ideating Role 1 of Interior Designer Brief: While responding to a site like Mill owner’s association building, it is the foremost responsibility of the interior designer to keep the essence of the building intact. Intervening the elements within the space, that transform to serve various functions has been be used to highlight the existing elements of the site. This is achieved through fusion of the materials and physical attributes of the existing and intervened elements. Understanding the given space through the existing elements. Intervening with the elements and enhancing the edges and balance of the space. The process began through reading the image scale and proportion and there after designing the elements which create a language through the argument. Intersection of existing and intervening planes is developed to create defined spaces for the display of the machines Machines.
Site : Mill owner’s association building Responding to the site using image as the medium to understand the space and how do intervening elemental planes change the language of the space while keeping the essence of the site intact.

Week 08-10 | FD PG Module 02
Ideating Role 2 of Interior Designer Brief: Site : Safal Profitaire, Ahmadabad
PROCESS - The idea is to explore intersection of planes forming various elements and how do they create a language for the user to follow a particular movement path. The existing grid is the start of intersections observed in the site itself, the modules created as interventions have got their proportions and dimensions from the horizontal and vertical grids of the site. The lines of space have been used to create intersections with the elements on site.
INTERIOR TECHNIQUE : Intersection of intervened elemental planes with the existing intersections on site.
Arrangement of planes in a manner that it directs the movement of the user.

Week 11-14 | FD PG Module 02
Ideating Role 3 of Interior Designer Brief: The intervention is an outcome of an argument developed through previous exercises - argument states Intersection of elemental planes, can direct movement in a space. The idea is to explore the formation of enclosures and develop a language for the display of the machines, that guides the user within a space.
The exercise began with design development of a siteless intervention, curated on the basis of the argument and the design decision taken on each step.
Learning outcome - To understand the various design decisions, a designer needs to take in order to create an interior language without being dependent on the architectural shell .To develop a site less intervention and an envelope designed in conjunction with the interior elements forming the interior intervention, which also enhances the experience.
