Local BMXers compete at Worlds 16 racers in her age group. Avery did not do as well as she’d hoped. “Avery was a bit disappointed with her results,” Alissa said. “She was hoping to make it out of rounds, but an unfortunate crash in front of her caused her to miss the next round by one spot.” After their race day the group set off to explore Europe, visiting France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. “We always like the girls to experience sights and the different cultures away from the track,” Alissa said. “This has definitely been a trip of a lifetime for these girls.”

After qualifying for the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) BMX World Championships, local fifth-grader Nora Willmert, 10, and seventh-grader Avery Chartrand, 12, traveled to Belgium last week to compete against the world’s top BMX racers. “The girls had a wonderful time in Belgium,” said Avery’s mom, Alissa Chartrand, noting they enjoyed meeting riders from around the globe. “They traded their jerseys with riders from Great Britain and Ireland.” During the World Championships, Nora made it to the semi-final race, becoming one of the top

five years, and Avery has been racing since she was four years old (eight years). Both race at the expert level. Alissa said her family got involved with BMX due to the proximity of the arena. Some friends invited their son to try it out, “and the rest is history,” she said. “It’s crazy to think that a little girl of eight and 10 can qualify at a world platform,” said Katherine Willmert, Nora’s mom. “(BMX) is an opportunity for many kids to be able to do that,” she said, “and we have a fantastic facility here that just grooms these kids to be top athletes in the sport.”

Heavy rains don’t deter fairgoers These three kids splash around the temporarily flooded area in front of the bandshell at the Isanti County Fair on Friday evening, July 26. Despite the brief thunderstorm, the evening’s entertainment went on as planned, as did Sunday’s, which saw intermittent rains all afternoon. See page 11 and countystar.com for more photos from last weekend’s fair.

Earlier this year, the city of Cambridge held a trio of citizen input meetings designed to get a better perspective into what residents like, don’t like, or would like to change about their chosen community. In addition, the city conducted an online survey asking responders to rank certain aspects of Cambridge life based on priority. During a special council meeting held on July 29, the council went over the results of this information. The responses to these surveys yielded some interesting results which indicated that while the city is trying to meet some of the needs of the citizens, there is still more to be accomplished. “I think that there are some things (that citizens had “no love” for) that are apparent,” said city administrator Lynda Woulfe. “For example, the trains. We’ve talked about them for years.” Other items listed that the city was already working on were “city controls trash

August 2019 MONTHLY SCOOP at Stanford University, that explained how the perception of stress can greatly affect the impact that stress has on us. While reading, I started thinking about my own stressors and my own ideas on how to deal with stress. Sure, I know that exercise and a good diet can help, but is that enough to really be “good at stress? The conclusion I came to is a hard “no. “

Stress can be quite debilitating and thinking we can avoid it all-together or that we can “emerge from stressful situations untouched is not realistic or productive. Alternatively, we should be thinking about how to have the courage to grow from it. McGonigal shares tips to really embrace stress, backed by research, that can change the damaging mind-set we have about stress.

Tip 1: Be positive about stress. Make an effort to view stress as helpful in your personal growth, not hurtful. By altering how we perceive stress, we can actually reduce the physical effects of stress, such as inflammation. Tip 2: Keep your eyes on the prize. Learning to see the end result can make the challenges worthwhile. A study out of Hope College showed that after only two minutes of thinking about the positive outcomes of a difficult experience, participants felt happier and more in-control of their lives. Tip 3: Make a stress-playlist. Compile songs that inspire you and make you motivated, just like you would for a work out. Research shows that listening to music can shift the physiology of your

stress response and increase confidence. Tip 4: Keep in mind that stress is meaningful. We all know the saying, “nothing good comes easy. Stress makes our lives worthwhile. Stress brings people together with experiences, pain and triumph. Embracing stress can make our lives richer. ISANTI-CHISAGO COUNTY STAR

countystar.com

AUGUST 1,, 2019

The only thing you have to fear isn’t just fear itself This year, I was able to get to both the Chisago and Isanti County’s fairs. And while looking around the two of them, seeing the various rides kind of took me back to my younger days. While I will never claim to have been a major daredevil when it came to carnival rides, I wasn’t exactly a scaredy-cat either. I enjoyed such rides as the Tilt-a-Whirl, the octopus, the more traditional roller coasters, and a few of the other “big kid” ones. Plus, given enough peer pressure, I could be prompted to ride several of the more “extreme” rides as well. I remember back in high school our Worth a class took an end-of-year trip to Valleyfair, Thousand where I wound up spending most of the Words day with Andy, one of my good friends. Andy was certainly more fearless than me, Bill and he kept prodding me to go on the Wild Rails, so after a slight apprehension, I gave Stickels III in. It turned out to be one of my favorite rides. Knowing Andy and myself, I’m guessing he would have convinced me to go on almost any ride – almost, except for that one ride. That ride was certainly my nemesis. I rode it once, and swore I would never ride it again. It was one of the rides at the Isanti County Fair this year, and just looking at it made me shudder. What is that one ride? Here it was called “the yo-yo.” At Valleyfair, at the time it was called “the flying trapeze,” but now it looks like it’s called “Charlie Brown’s Wind-Up.” I know what you’re thinking. That’s an extremely tame ride. Basically, it’s a swing that goes around in circles. It doesn’t go up, down, or even in reverse. And it’s not even that fast of a ride. But here’s the problem, with the help of centripetal force, you are constantly swinging at about a 45-degree angle. You see, I’ve always had a form of a fear of heights. But it’s not the height that gets me. It’s just being at an angle for an extended period of time that got to me. I just couldn’t stand being at that angle. As a kid, I didn’t like being on the top of a teeter-totter, and even as I got older, I dreaded having to go down escalators. Doing a Google search, I came up with “bathmophobia,” or the fear of stairs or slopes. I’m not totally sure why I had this fear. It might have something to do with when I was in elementary school – I was watching a Cambridge football game from the very top of the bleachers and I slipped between the sitting bench and the foot bench, falling all the way to the ground. Somehow I managed to avoid significant injury (I threw up a couple times as my dad took me to the doctor, but I was back home even before the game ended). In reading about bathmophobia, that event certainly fits as a probable cause. I think I have pretty much grown out of the fear now. I can handle the escalator at Xcel Energy Center just fine (although I do find myself still just looking straight ahead instead of down). But I’m also not going to tempt it. Even if I physically was able to ride that ride, I think I will just opt to keep my feet on the ground. And nothing – not the chance for a cool photo, the curiosity to see if I truly have conquered my fears, or even having Andy come back to prod me – will get me up in the air like that again. Hold a family meeting to discuss Alzheimer’s implications In an effort to raise awareness, educate our community and assist families who have been touched by Alzheimer’s disease, this month’s article will discuss the importance of holding a family meeting. The website for “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” (powerfultoolsforcaregivers.org) has this advice: “When we experience a change in our ability to provide caregiving or the person we are caring for experiences a decline in health or Cambridge ACT ability to function, other family on Alzheimer’s members and friends are often affected by these changes. We also may need their help in Survey Team sharing caregiving responsibilities, problem-solving or making a tough caregiving decision. A family meeting can be a useful tool.” A family meeting can help in the following ways: - Build understanding - Increase communication - Help find solutions - Provides a chance for everyone to share their views - Sharing of caregiving responsibilities - Help determine who will do what - Helps everyone to be “on the same page” It’s so important to realize that “We’re all in this together.” A family meeting can be an opportunity to clear the air and provide healing from misunderstandings. Powerful Tools for Caregivers provides easyto-follow guidelines for family meetings: - Involve the care receiver whenever possible. - Include everyone who is concerned and

potentially affected by decisions or changes to be made. - Consider a facilitator. If there are disagreements among family members and potential for conflict, you may want to have a professional facilitate the family meeting. - Plan an agenda in advance, when possible. Be clear about the purpose of the meeting – what do you want to accomplish? In most cases the sooner a family meeting is held the better. Feel free to reach out to Jayne Mund, Caregiver Consultant, for resources on holding a family meeting. A Caregiver Consultant can provide guidance and assist the caregiver in planning for and dealing with aspects of the caregiving experience. For information about local resources to assist in next steps after a diagnosis, contact Jayne Mund at 763-689-8811. Second fatal crash closes Highway 95 STAFF REPORT NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

A second fatal crash in almost exactly a 24-hour period and less than one mile from a four-vehicle crash that took place on Tuesday, July 23, claimed the life of a North Branch man. This second crash involved three vehicles and occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, at the intersection of Highway 95 and Hornsby Street NE, which is just west of the first crash location. According to the Minnesota State Patrol’s incident report, a 2012 Kia Soul, driven by 47-year-old Tracy Marie Hartmann, of North Branch, was traveling eastbound on Highway 95 when it slowed down or stopped to make a left turn onto Hornsby Street NE where it was rear-ended by a 2007 Dodge Caliber driven by 21-year-old

‘Night to Unite’ activities planned for Aug. 6

Madison Rae Amundson, of Cambridge. The force of the collision pushed the Kia into a 2011 Ford Fiesta driven by 17-year-old Andrew James Vaneerden, of North Branch, who was traveling westbound on Highway 95 in the rightturn lane to go north on Hornsby. David Lavern Winberg, 56, of North Branch, who was a passenger in Hartmann’s Kia, was killed as a result of the crash. Hartmann was transported to Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither Amundson nor Vaneerden received any noticeable injuries, according to the incident report. The incident report indicates that all involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The Minnesota State Patrol is continuing to investigate both incidents.

Ask A Trooper: Drivers going under speed limit should use right lane Question: Can you please explain the new law that requires drivers to move to the right lane if they are impeding traffic by traveling under the posted speed limit? Answer: The requirement to move over and allow vehicles to pass in the left lane has been law in Minnesota for many years. Modernized language was added to the current law for those drivers Ask a that drive in the left lane below the posted Trooper speed limit and are Sgt. Neil impeding traffic. Effective Aug. 1, Dickenson the modernized law requires drivers in the left lane to move to the right, when practicable, to allow vehicles to pass. If you need to pass someone, do so in the left lane – but then get back in the right lane as soon as you’re clear. Nothing allows a driver to exceed the speed limit on roads with more than one lane in each direction. If you are traveling under the posted speed limit, move to the right when safe to do so. Remember to signal every time you change lanes. Keeping the left lane clear has other

benefits, too: It will help reduce everyone’s stress on the road by increasing efficiency, and it can ward off road rage effectively. Traffic also works best when everyone is going about the same speed. The speed limits are the limits, and we are always on alert for violators that choose to go above those limits. In Minnesota, speeding is one of the leading contributing factors in crashes, so please obey all posted speed limits. Sgt. Interested in drones? Watch these videos before you fly CONTRIBUTED MN DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION

The Minnesota Department of Transportation encourages Minnesotans interested in flying drones to watch a new series of videos that the agency created in collaboration with TPT, the Twin Cities public television station. Current and potential drone pilots can visit www.tpt.org/drone-etiquette/ or www.mndot.gov/aero/drones/ to view the six-part series titled, “Drone Etiquette.” “As drone use becomes more prevalent we want the public to be aware of what drones can and cannot do,” said Cassandra Isackson, MnDOT aeronautics director. “This series of videos explains the rules and regulations to ensure safety for those on the ground and in the sky.” Drones became widely available in the past few years, bringing many novice pilots into aviation. MnDOT’s role is to ensure aviation safety in the state

and inform drone operators that they are acting as aviators in highly regulated airspace when flying drones. To reach this audience, which preliminary data suggests may be several hundred thousand people, MnDOT contracted with TPT to create the videos as their viewership corresponded with the demographic for distribution. MnDOT’s goal for the videos is to reduce public anxiety about drones by showing responsible drone use and to educate new owners on rules for the safe operation of drones. The short videos are shown through MnDOT social media, between programing on TPT and at www.tpt.org: - Out of the Box - Born to Fly - Using Drones to Inspect Trees - Using Drones for Storytelling - Using Drones to Inspect Bridges - Know Your Place For more information about drones, visit: www.mndot.gov/aero/drones.

BMX: Isanti track to be reconfigured like Texas track where next Worlds will be held FROM PAGE I

Nora grew up watching her older brother. When she was three or four years old, she told her parents she was going to race when she turned five. “(She) basically skipped the strider thing, just peddled at home,” said Nora’s dad Reid Willmert, with Katherine noting they didn’t really think she was interested. “The day she turned five she said, ‘I’m five now. I’m BMXing,’” Katherine said, with Reid adding, “She cried down the hill the first time.” COMPETITORS ALL THE WAY “It’s a really fun sport,” Nora said, noting the racers are friends. However, when the race is on, they are fierce competitors. After the race is over, everybody is congratulating each other and friends again, she added. “There’s very good sportsmanship,” said Reid, noting that if someone goes down on the track, other riders will wait at the end of the track to make sure the rider is okay. “One of the things that drew us to the sport is the family atmosphere,” he said, “and then just sportsmanship in the whole. It’s pretty cool to watch.” Avery said she likes to com-

ing to Alissa. “I just love that inside of her is this little fire, ready to go,” Alissa said. “She’s just as calm, cool and collected in her own little world, but get her out on the track, and she competes just as fierce.” ‘ANY KID CAN DO IT’ Both Avery and Nora have participated in BMX races throughout the United States, and this is their third time qualifying for the World Cham-

At last year’s Cambridge Art Fair the sidewalk chalk drawing was a popular attraction.

The Salvation Army is inviting the public to help “Stuff the Bus” with donated school supplies on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Cambridge. Donated supplies will be made available to families who need them at a “Back to School Giveaway” on Aug. 14 and 15 from 12-7 p.m. at North Isanti Baptist Church, 2248 313th Ave. NE, Cambridge.

That event will offer free backpacks, school supplies, snacks, kids’ clothing and winter wear. Both events are sponsored by the Salvation Army and North Isanti Baptist Church. For information call the church at 763-689-3576 or Salvation Army at 763689-1841. Donations of school supplies, clothing or other items can be dropped at North Isanti Baptist Church Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

the sport can be intimidating. “It’s a fast sport and it’s busy,” she said, “but all you have to do is go up to any staff person and say, ‘I’m new here,’ and they will just be taken under the wing. A little three-year-old can be in the gate with a 20-year-old fast kid (at practices). It builds a lot of confidence with the little kids, because they are with the big kids even at practice.” She added that at races, kids are racing other kids their own age. The coach of Avery and Nora’s factory team is Donovan Long of Houston, Texas, who coaches kids from all over the U.S. He is also the director of the 2020 World Championships that will be hosted by North Houston Bike Park. Typically, BMX bike tracks are reconstructed with new obstacles every few years. Isanti BMX is currently being restructured, and it is being modeled after the North Houston Bike Park. The girls train hard to get where they are at, practicing and training every week. Training consists of sprints, weight-lifting, working out and riding the track. Avery, who says she is at the track nearly every day it is open, also coaches clinics for younger riders on Wednesdays.

order. Specifically, a couple areas of pedestrian safety would be addressed. First, a crosswalk running across 24th Avenue near Brown Park, along with a bicycle stop sign at the edge of that same bike path, can be erected. Second, a crosswalk in front of Common Grounds: A United Methodist Community could easily be added; however, the city opted to contact the church first because there was a request from the church that such a crosswalk would be rainbow-colored. Public works director Todd Schwab said he would like to see some specific designs before signing off on that concept.

pionship. They participated in the World Championship race in 2017 in South Carolina. However, the World Championship in 2018 was located in Azerbaijan. The girls parents’ did not feel safe traveling to the Middle Eastern country, so the girls did not participate in the World Championships last year. The girls are part of a factory team and are sponsored, so some expenses are paid. However, the cost of travel still falls on their families. Both families say they do what they can to finance their girls’ participation in races to other states and countries. They split travel expenses with other families, and vacations are spent at race tracks, Katherine noted. “Minnesota is known as ‘Minnesota strong’ across the BMX community,” Katherine noted about the families working together. “‘Minnesota nice’ is known in the BMX community.” BMX racing does not have to be expensive, though, Alissa said. Those beginning or trying it out can pay when they show up to race, and equipment can be rented or borrowed when just starting out. “Any kid can do it, there’s no sitting on the bench,” she said. “You come, you do it.” Katherine agreed, but said

DIFFERING OPINIONS The one topic the council struggled with was whether or not it’s the city’s role to provide things to do for its residents. “It isn’t,” was council member Marlys Palmer’s short response. “We cannot afford to, even if we wanted to,” offered council member Lisa Iverson. “I think its private businesses’ and entrepreneurs’ responsibility.” “I was going to take the opposite tack,” mayor Jim Godfrey said. “We do have things to do, so I think some of this might be facilities, like bike trails and splash pads. That is our business. And then make sure they’re utilized.” The one thing the council did agree on is that it is very hard to please everyone. “You could have a hundred different things ... but you can’t be all things to all people,” Palmer said. Ultimately, the council decided they would like to hear some follow-up on specifically what residents would like to see for things to do.

ONLINE SURVEY Woulfe proclaimed the online survey to be very successful, with the most responses (197) of any online survey conducted by the city. With that amount of data, a couple trends showed up in the results. In the survey placed on the Survey Monkey website, respondents were asked to rank a list of 10 city amenities in order of their importance to the respondent. The list included: police, fire, park development, road maintenance, economic development and job creation, code enforcement, timely plowing, lower property taxes, park events and quality of life (July 4, Cambridge Day Out). The number one trend is that police, fire, timely plowing and road maintenance were consistently ranked very high. Police services were the number one priority in 69 of the responses, with fire getting 62 number two priority votes. Conversely, only five responses ranked police as their lowest priority, with six saying fire was their lowest. On the flip side, code enforcement was easily the lowest priority for most responders – 49 people had it as their lowest priority, with 35 listing it as second lowest and another 30 as their third-lowest. What was perhaps most surprising to the council was that “lower property taxes” came in as the second-lowest priority, according to the cumulative responses. While 23 people placed it as their highest priority, over twice as many (48) named it as their lowest priority, with another 23 calling it their second-lowest priority. “When we reviewed this information, we really thought the rankings were very interesting,” Woulfe said. “When you ask somebody to choose ‘Do you want services or do you want lower taxes?’, they said they want to keep their services.”

New law prohibits indoor use of e-cigarettes CONTRIBUTED MINNESOTANS FOR A SMOKE-FREE GENERATION

Starting Aug. 1, all Minnesotans can breathe easier. That day, a new law goes into effect that prohibits the use of e-cigarettes in workplaces where smoking is already banned. The law expands the definition of smoking in the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act to protect the public from harmful e-cigarette aerosol in public places like restaurants, bars and stores. Until now, only 50 percent of Minnesotans have been covered by local policies that prohibit e-cigarette use in those indoor spaces. This change is the culmination of a long fight by health advocates to include e-cigarettes in the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act. Protecting all Minnesotans from e-cigarette aerosol was proposed in the State Legislature as early as 2014, but it wasn’t until this year that a bill made it through the process and was signed into law as part of the Health and Human Services budget bill. Overwhelming bipartisan support for this policy comes at a time when e-cigarette devices are driving an unprecedented spike in youth tobacco use in Minnesota and across the country. Minnesotans for a SmokeFree Generation, a coalition of more than 60 organizations

PEXELS WEBSITE WITH PERMISSION

Beginning Aug. 1, the smoking of e-cigarettes indoors will be regulated the same way other tobacco products have been in Minnesota under the Clean Indoor Air Act.

that share a common goal of reducing youth smoking and ending tobacco’s harm for good, celebrated the strengthening of Minnesota’s clean air policy. The law will improve health for Minnesota residents and send a message to youth that e-cigarettes are not safe. “Starting August 1, every Minnesotan will be able to breathe the clean indoor air they deserve and expect,” said Molly Moilanen, vice president at ClearWay MinnesotaSM

and Co-Chair of Minnesotans for a Smoke-Free Generation. “E-cigarette aerosol encroaches on our freedom to breathe, and indoor vaping sends a misleading message to youth that e-cigarettes are safe. Thank you to legislative leaders and Governor Walz for continuing Minnesota’s leadership on clean air and health.” Minnesota’s expanded definition of smoking covers the range of tobacco products on the market now and antic-

ipates new products that may emerge in the future. E-cigarette aerosol contains nicotine, heavy metals, formaldehyde and other carcinogens and harmful chemicals. The long-term impact on the health of users or those exposed to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol is unknown since there have been no long-term studies conducted. Tobacco use remains Minnesota’s leading cause of preventable death and disease, taking the lives of more than 6,300 Minnesotans every year and costing an estimated $7 billion annually. Smoking rates in Minnesota had been declining for decades, but the adult cigarette smoking rate has stalled out at 14 percent, and for the first time in a generation youth tobacco use has increased. In particular, surging e-cigarette use is threatening the health of Minnesota teens and young adults. Indoor, public e-cigarette use – especially when allowed in places where cigarette smoking is prohibited – may re-normalize smoking and further threaten Minnesota’s progress to reduce youth tobacco use. The U.S. Surgeon General calls teen e-cigarette use an epidemic. National surveys found that from 2017 to 2018, youth vaping increased 78 percent – the largest increase in adolescent substance use ever recorded. Locally, the 2017 Minne-

sota Youth Tobacco Survey found that nearly one in five high-schoolers is using e-cigarettes and 40 percent have tried them. That survey was conducted before JUUL and other e-cigarettes gained massive popularity among students. “Expanding our clean indoor air act to prohibit e-cigarettes protects the health of all Minnesotans,” Moilanen added. “This law sends a clear message that Minnesota is serious about combating surging teen nicotine use – but there is so much more we can do to protect our kids from lifetime addiction, including raising the tobacco age to 21 and funding robust tobacco prevention.” To date, 18 states and 40 Minnesota cities and counties have adopted Tobacco 21 policies. Raising the tobacco sale age to 21 will help reduce youth smoking and save lives, since 95 percent of addicted adult smokers started before age 21. The National Academy of Medicine estimates that Tobacco 21 would reduce smoking among 15-to-17-year-olds by 25 percent. Sustainable funding for tobacco prevention is especially critical as ClearWay Minnesota, a major funder of such programs, comes to the end of its limited life by 2022. Last year, Minnesota took in more than $750 million in settlement fees and tobacco taxes – yet less than 1 percent of that was used for tobacco prevention or cessation.

Unique ‘picnic opera’ will provide music and food for audience on Aug. 11 CONTRIBUTED MIXED PRECIPITATION

Celebrating its 11th season, Mixed Precipitation drama troupe brings an edible opera adventure to parks, farms and gardens throughout Minnesota in August and September, including North Branch. The group will perform “The Clemency of Tito’s Tennis Club: A Picnic Operetta” on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Women’s Environmental Institute, 15715 River Road N, North Branch. The play is a new adaptation of Mozart’s opera “La Clemenza di Tito,” with high stakes sports drama, natural disasters and ’80s new wave music. In it, a rag-tag group of players is resurrecting a defunct tennis club. But backstabbing, bitterness and a murderous revenge plot threaten their rise to the top of Rome’s championship match. Will they find redemption before Mount Vesuvius covers them in ash? When can cheaters be forgiven?

All is presented with the Picnic Operetta’s trademark style of playfulness, satire and hope. Classic arias and duets from Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” soar across the garden alongside new wave and synthpop hits by Devo, Berlin, Yaz and Pat Benatar. The troupe’s operatic athletes will serve the audience some fresh edible bites as well. The outdoor performance is family-friendly and wheelchair-accessible. The venue provides blankets, bug spray and sunscreen, but patrons are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and water. The performance is offered for a suggested donation of $10-$20, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. RSVP is required by calling Amy Danielson at 612245-2020 or emailing danielson.amy@gmail.com. More information can be found at http://mixedprecipitation.org/shows/the-clemency-of-titos-tennisclub.

Even though I’m an Extension Master Gardener, I’ve been perplexed about some of the issues going on in my garden this year. Especially when it comes to all the plant loss I had in my perennial gardens that I’m pretty sure is due to a bitterly cold early winter with no snow cover to insulate the ground. And I know I’m not alone. Often what’s going on in your yard and garden is not too far different from what goes on in the yards and gardens of educated and well-seasoned Master Gardeners. Although we don’t have all the answers to every gardening question, we certainly have the resources to find those answers. And in the process, we very often learn something new ourselves. The stories you tell, the pictures you show us, and the plant samples you bring to us help us to help you solve, or

at least explain, what’s going on in your yard and garden. Most of us now have cell phones with cameras, so please take the time to take a picture of the plant or problem you want to ask us about. The Almelund Threshing Show is a great place to visit and talk with a Chisago County Master Gardener. Our log cabin location is at the east end of the threshing grounds right behind the Old Courthouse Building. The Threshing Show runs from Friday, Aug. 9, through Sunday, Aug. 11. In addition to the Master Gardeners, our location has many helpful displays and also handout information to take with you. You can also sign up to be on our mailing list to receive our newsletter, plant sale information and any other upcoming events. See you at the Threshing Show! TALKING WITH THE EXPERTS

How families can navigate difficult financial situations Q: How can parents help their children make more informed decisions?

BY UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA UNEWS@UMN.EDU

Prof. Serido: Financial parenting is about preparing children to make informed financial choices on their own. Parents do that the same way they prepare their children to make informed choices about the food they eat, the friends they make and their school behavior.

Family finances can be one of the most difficult topics to talk about, as it is tied to everything from the jobs we hold to planning our futures. University of Minnesota Associate Professor Joyce Serido explains three things all families should consider, how to help young people make more informed decisions and the free resources available for all families.

Finances are an abstract concept. Involving children in age-appropriate discussions and decisions allows you to gauge their understanding of concepts like saving for a new purchase, tradeoff (e.g., a new car or a vacation), and future planning.

Q. What are three things all families should consider about their finances? Prof. Serido: Our choices and our finances are always in flux because our lives are dynamic. In terms of family finances, that means adding a buffer to the choices we make to account for the things we can’t control, be that unexpected car repairs or the economy. Most families find the subject of finances daunting, whether they have a lot or a little, but finances are integral to the choices we make, the goals we set and the dreams we share. Whether contemplating a purchase (e.g., a new car); celebrating a family event (e.g., high school graduation), or making plans for summer (e.g., vacation, summer camp, work on the garden), families have many goals and dreams and not enough resources for all of them. Rather than seeing finances as “too many choices — not enough money,’’ it may be helpful to think of finances as one component in promoting family well-being. Family well-being is an evolving and lifelong process. Finances, or more specifically, financial stability promotes family well-being. And a balanced approach to family financial stability encompasses three types of financial strategies: - Reactive strategies to handle unexpected financial demands (e.g., car repairs). -Preventive strategies to minimize the impact of expected demands (e.g., car insurance). - Proactive strategies aimed at securing the future (e.g., saving and investing).

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

Joyce Serido is an associate professor in the Education and Human Development’s Department of Family Social Science. Q: What are some of the biggest struggles families face with their finances? Prof. Serido: Perhaps the biggest financial struggle for families is talking about finances. This can lead to confusion and conflict. However, this isn’t about telling children how much money their parents make or how much they owe. This is about working together to make healthy financial choices, set goals that align with their values and dreams, and the role of each member of the family in getting there. Another common struggle is getting caught between the present financial situation and future goals, leaving everyone feeling stressed about finances. When current demands exceed available finances, you may need to focus on the immediate problem. But don’t forget about the longer term entirely. Remember, financial stability is about practicing a combination of short- and long-term financial coping strategies. Also, many families fail to appreciate the importance of seeking help. Want to improve your credit or refinance your home? Do some DIY learning. Take advantage of community workshops and classes, often at no or low cost. Read news articles, blog posts or books on the topic. Do it before your finances become too big a problem to handle.

That’s why I emphasize family financial communication as the starting point. That means an ongoing dialogue and age-appropriate sharing of knowledge about saving and spending. Taking them to a bank or credit union to open a checking account, teaching them to count currency and make change, and expecting them to save a portion of an allowance or monetary gift are all ways to effectively engage even young children in understanding the role of finances in everyday life. Finally, everyone needs opportunities to practice making financial choices, to discover the cause and effect of our behavior, and continue or change our behavior accordingly. Giving children opportunities to make financial choices, first with your guidance and then on their own, is a powerful tool for building skills and confidence. A good reminder not just for our children and, perhaps, ourselves is that mistakes are a part of learning. Making financial choices within the family is a way to let children know that making mistakes is unavoidable. Learning from mistakes is a choice. Q: What resources are available to families to help them better cope with financial stress? Prof. Serido: Since the 2008 Financial Crisis, the number of families struggling with their finances has grown substantially. As a result, there are many useful and affordable resources available for families. Here are some reliable and free sources I would suggest. A good starting point is the Financial Tool Kit developed by University of Minnesota Extension. The website provides resources and guidance on

a wide range of financial topics, including financial management, disaster recovery and family farms. MinnesotaHelp.Info has information and resources beyond the domain of family finance. Another good source is the Consumer Federal Protection Bureau website. This is a good choice for parents who are interested in learning more about ways to financially parent their children. Q: How is your research working toward helping families build a stronger foundation when it comes to their finances? Prof. Serido: Families in America are struggling financially. Although while the debate about the causes and consequences of this continues, my research seeks to identify ways to help families navigate the economic realities of contemporary life. My research focuses on youth and young adults, because many of life’s most significant events — from degree attainment to marriage and career formation — take place during this period. At the same time, the transition to adulthood today comes with more uncertain employment prospects, higher education costs and fewer social safety nets. This means youth and young adults need a higher level of financial knowledge and skills compared to previous generations. An important component of my research is examining the family processes through which youth and young adults learn about finances, notably the everyday family interactions that shape our attitudes, values and understanding of finance. For the past 12 years, I led a team of researchers from diverse disciplines — including personal finance, economics, human development, sociology and consumer sciences — to study how financial behaviors change and what role financial behaviors play in the transition from late adolescence to young adulthood. Over the next few years, we will continue to look more deeply into the data to uncover the financial factors that promote, or undermine, adult relationships and well-being.

JOYCE SERIDO is an associate professor in the College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Family Social Science and a University of Minnesota Extension specialist. Her expertise is in financial parenting; financial behavior and economic well being; and financial behavior and early romantic relationships.

Deer season regulations, licenses now available year include regulations that reflect the DNR’s response to chronic wasting disease. In addition to hunters, all Minnesotans in central and southeast Minnesota should pay close attention to the deer feeding and attractant ban rule. The area where deer feeding and using deer attractants is prohibited will expand starting Sept. 1, in areas of central and southeast Minnesota where CWD was detected in farmed or wild deer. Feeding and attractants increase the risk of disease transmission between animals by bringing them together in close contact, which is a mechanism for CWD spread. There are several changes to deer permit area numbering this year that will clarify where CWD management and surveillance occurs. Deer permit areas within a CWD management zone, in southeast and north-central Minnesota, will now be part of a 600-series permit areas. The metro deer permit area will be renamed to 701 from 601. The DNR is, as in previous years, enforcing carcass movement restrictions to limit the spread of disease. Hunters will also need to be aware of mandatory sampling during all deer seasons in the CWD management zones (southeast and north-central), and over the opening weekend of the firearms season in the CWD control zone (southeast, bordering the CWD management zone) and in surveil-

Hunters can start planning ahead for significant changes to deer season regulations, including a youth deer season that’s expanded statewide, expanded deer feeding and attractant bans, and other updates related to managing chronic wasting disease. “We heard a lot of support for a statewide youth deer hunting season,” said Barbara Keller, big game program leader for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “We’re excited to make it easier for parents, relatives or trusted adults to share their hunting knowledge and traditions with the next generation of deer hunters.” The 2019 Minnesota Hunting and Trapping regulations handbook is now available on the DNR’s deer hunting page at mndnr.gov/hunting/ deer. Hunting licenses go on sale Thursday, Aug. 1, and are available at any DNR license agent, by telephone at 888-646-6367, or online at mndnr.gov/ buyalicense. The dedicated, statewide youth season runs from Thursday, Oct. 17, through Sunday, Oct. 20, for youth hunters ages 10-17. In the past, the youth season was only available in the southeast, northwest and Twin Cities metro permit areas. Other significant changes this

Isanti County Public Health celebrates World Breastfeeding Week CONTRIBUTED ISANTI COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH

The Isanti County Public Health (ICPH) WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program is celebrating Minnesota Breastfeeding Awareness Month in August and World Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 1-7. Community members, employers and health professionals can do a lot to support women and families and help mom and baby get this healthy start. Local mom Sakira says she was frustrated and ready to quit breastfeeding within the first couple days after her oldest child was born. Her mom said to ask WIC for help. “They encouraged me to keep going,” Sakira said. “They told me I was doing a really good job and how healthy breastmilk was for my baby.” That encouragement helped Sakira keep going, and now she is breastfeeding her third child, one-year-old Elijah. Breastmilk continues to be an important part of his diet even though he eats a wide variety of foods and is learning to drink from a cup. Another local mom, Sarah, had a traumatic delivery experience with her son, Albert, followed by several breastfeeding challenges. “I had no knowledge or experience with breastfeeding,” she said. Sarah felt very discouraged and insecure. Sarah came to the Isanti County WIC Office and met with a lactation educator. “Barb helped me understand what to look for, what to listen for and how to get a good latch,” Sarah said. “She helped me understand how to use my breast pump to increase my supply. She taught me to trust my maternal instincts and to trust my baby. Breastfeeding became more of a natural thing.” Sarah’s first goal was to breastfeed for six months, which she went well beyond.

Area mother Sakira reads with her one-year-old son Elijah. After having a bad nursing experience with her first child, she sought help from Isanti County Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program for advice that helped make her experience with third child Elijah a positive one.

SPECIAL WEEK RAISES AWARENESS World Breastfeeding Week helps raise awareness of the importance of support in empowering a mother to successfully breastfeed and reach her goals. Breastfeeding is one of the best investments in saving lives and improving health. Support from family, employers, childcare, public health and health providers all play critical roles in assisting a mother to breastfeed. Last year, ICPH displayed a tree, and breastfeeding mothers wrote on leaves the names of those who supported them in their breastfeeding journey – 80% of their support came from family, friends and significant others. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding is the standard for infant feeding. It provides essential nutrients and antibodies that boost an infant’s immune system, which protects against childhood illnesses. Babies who are not breastfed are more likely to develop common childhood illnesses, like ear in-

Breastfeeding mothers also have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In Isanti County, eight out of 10 WIC moms initiated breastfeeding, but only four out of 10 infants were still breastfeeding at three months, according to 2018 WIC data. WIC works to

help women get a strong start with exclusive breastfeeding. Challenges women face to meet their breastfeeding goals include those they experience in healthcare settings, worksites and child care centers. That’s changing in Minnesota – there are a growing number of healthcare, child care, employers and health departments working to address these barriers and make breastfeeding easier for new mothers. Isanti County Public Health supports breastfeeding by promoting breastfeeding to clients, providing lactation counselors and providing a breastfeeding room for staff and visitors. Isanti County WIC and the East Central Breastfeeding Coalition have resources avail-

able including a lactation privacy tent that can be reserved for community events. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recognizes those who take steps to provide accommodations and support for women who would like to breastfeed or continue to breastfeed after returning to work or school. Isanti County currently has two breastfeeding-friendly designated worksites: Isanti County and Rosewood Senior Living. Visit the MDH Breastfeeding Friendly Recognition Program website for more details (https://www.health. state.mn.us/people/breastfeeding/recognition/index.html). Your Lawn and Garden Guide

How to help flowers withstand heat waves flowers safe and vibrant during periods of extreme heat.

Heat waves are an inevitable part of summer in many places across the globe. While humans can escape indoors to air conditioned rooms when heat waves hit full swing, flowers planted around a property have no such luxury, putting their survival in jeopardy whenever the mercury rises to especially steamy heights. Wilted flowers that have succumbed to the summer sun are a sight many gardening enthusiasts can recognize. But there are ways to keep

· Water at the appropriate times of day. The National Gardening Association notes that it's best to water in the early morning and evening because less water will be lost to evaporation during these times of day than during the afternoon, when temperatures tend to be at their hottest. · Choose the right watering method. It's not just when but also how you water that can affect flowers during summer heat waves. Aboveground sprinklers might be great for lawns, but the NGA notes that such sprinklers can encourage the spread of disease on certain plants, including roses. Many gardening professionals recommend soaker hoses

when watering flowers because they promote deep watering that can help the plants withstand the summer heat. If you must use an overhead watering system, set the timer so plants are watered early in the morning or evening. · Routinely check the soil moisture. Soil moisture can help gardeners determine if their flowers have enough water to withstand the heat. The NGA advises gardeners to dig a 12-inch deep wedge of soil from their gardens to determine its moisture levels. If the top six inches of the soil is dry, water. If that area is still wet or moist, the plants have enough moisture to withstand the heat. Check these moisture levels more frequently during heat waves than other times of year.

· Avoid overwatering. Novice gardeners may be tempted to water more frequently when they see wilted leaves on their flowers. But wilted leaves are not necessarily indicative of suffering plants. Plants release moisture to protect themselves from excessive heat, and that release of moisture can cause leaves to wilt as the plants try to protect themselves by providing less surface area that can be exposed to the sun. So long as soil moisture levels are healthy, the flowers should be fine, even if their leaves have wilted. No gardener wants to see their flowers succumb to the summer heat. Fortunately, there are many ways to help flowers survive heat waves.
