WE WANT YOU: To have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday weekend!

The Wall of Honor was erected and dedicated recently at Ecumen North Branch. The spot is filled with photos of male and female veterans who are current residents of the senior living facility.

Ecumen dedicates Wall of Honor BY JENNIFER KOTILA NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

Ken Swanson served as a combat engineer in the South Pacific during World War II as part of the U.S. Army’s 43rd Division. He faced the enemy from August 1942 through September 1945. And now his face graces the Wall of Honor at Ecumen North Branch senior living facility to honor him and many more who served. Swanson, a resident at Ecumen, was in attendance at the dedication ceremony on June 26. “It’s very nice,” he said of the wall filled with photos of combat veterans who are current residents of the facility. During the dedication ceremony, Ecumen Executive Director Jeffrey Richardson thanked the leadership team for “their vision to want to be able to create something special for our veteran residents that are living with us today.” Along with thanking veterans and their families “who endured while we served,” Richardson recognized Senator Mark Koran, who was in attendance at the dedication; the American Legion Post 85 and the VFW Post 6424, who

Isanti’s outhouse races have been ‘going’ for 30 years BY MEGAN BERGMAN NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

Outhouses tend to get the stinky end of the deal when it comes to their reputation. For 30 years the Isanti Jubilee Days has attempted to help them break free from their stenchy stigma – a heavy load the outhouses in Isanti County have had to bear. In an effort to bring about more awareness of breaking down these stinky stereotypes, the city of Isanti created the Outhouse Races for the Isanti Jubilee Days. In this event, teams challenge more than the stench.

And one man can remember all the way back to the creation of the event – Denny (Gilly) Gilbert. OUTHOUSE RACES: THE EARLY STAGES Celebrating his 30th year leading the dunk for corn cobs, Gilly remembers the early stages of how the races became reality. He was part of Jubilee Days even before outhouses came on the scene – assisting with the parade when he was 24 years old. “I’ve been involved with Jubilee days for 40 years,” Gilly said. “I worked for a company SEE OUTHOUSES, PAGE 8

MONTHLY SCOOP – VIBRANCY IN NORTH BRANCH A North Branch business owner recently expressed his excitement about the development occurring in the city. He called North Branch “vibrant.” He has only owned his business for three years, but has seen growth and the development in the community over each of those three years. Chamber members are part of that growth! This vibrancy, this dedication to North Branch, is not going un-noticed. In case you haven’t noticed, 21 new homes are under construction as of June 20, 2019. Several new residential developments have been approved by the city council, so you can expect to see more new housing, representing a variety of styles and price points. The new developments include Meadows North 2nd (61 single family and patio home lots at the SW corner of 400th and Flink); Schoolside Village 2 (14 single family lots just west of the Middle School); Townsedge (10 – 1 acre lots along 375th); Lucht’s Crossing 3 (47 single family lots east

of 384th Trail); Townsedge 2 (12 single family lots south of Golden Oaks Trail); Willow Grove (20 – 1 bedroom apartments on 14th Avenue); Cherokee Place (48 townhomes units southwest of Cherokee and 400th); Wildridge Place 3 (8 single family lots) and Wildridge 11 (18 single family homes). We are experiencing commercial growth as well. Construction on the long anticipated Kwik Trip sites are planned to begin August, 2019, with store openings to occur in early 2020. Flashing By Design, our newest industrial business, had its Grand-Opening on June 27! The City is working aggressively on finding solutions to bring high-speed internet to areas of our city without high-speed. Traditional high-speed internet carriers are not interested in more rural areas, so the city is looking at new technology and options – we want high-speed availability to each person in our city.

Every city has its ups and downs – businesses starting and closing. The other day I was walking downtown for some shopping and was in awe over the beautiful flower baskets, the new “pocket park” that the group from the MN Design Team visit planted and the many new businesses that have emerged in our downtown in the past three years. Thank you all investing in North Branch, keeping the vibrancy glowing and being a spark of inspiration of great things to come… Carla Vita Community Development Director City of North Branch

ISANTI-CHISAGO COUNTY STAR

OPINION countystar.com

JULY 4, 2019

Aren’t we all on the same team? I will admit that soccer isn’t one of my top sports to watch, especially international competition. But my interest will be increased for such events like the Olympics, or as what is currently going on – the Women’s World Cup. At least with those events, I can have a definite team to root for in the “home team” USA. And for me, that is a good part of the allure of sports: picking a team you have some sort of connection with and cheering them on to hopefully a championship. At its core, it is quite simply bragging rights. My team is better than everyone else at that Worth a time. And during that Thousand particular time, it can be an excellent diversion Words from what’s going on outside the sports universe. Bill This year, though, I am struggling to find that sports zen-like feeling. It Stickels III just seems as though rather than enjoying the dominance of the U.S., so many people are turning it into yet another political statement. At the center of this intrusion is star forward Megan Rapinoe. For those who don’t know, Rapinoe is co-captain of the team and has been having an incredible tournament, statistically single-handedly leading the U.S. to their last two wins. She also has a history of being outspoken about certain causes, something that has caught the attention and angst of President Trump. That’s where the intrusions come in. People who are both sports fans and non-fans have used Rapinoe’s accomplishments as a weapon to attack the controversial president, as if Rapinoe – and the rest of her team for that matter – are winning these games more to show up Trump than to prove that they are the best in the world. I will admit I’m not the biggest Rapinoe fan, at least off the pitch. She certainly isn’t an innocent bystander when it comes to causing controversy or distractions, especially in terms of supplying salacious soundbites. Quite frankly, some of her comments are completely off-base and normally would have serious consequences if someone else had said them. But on the field, she is an incredible athlete. Not only is she the physical force behind the U.S., but the emotional force as well. If it wasn’t for her, I highly doubt the U.S. would still be alive in this year’s tournament. For that, I’m completely behind her. That’s where the difference lies. I’m willing to look past our differences in order to achieve the greater goal – winning the World Cup. That’s what being a “team” is all about. Once that has been accomplished, then we can go our separate ways. Or maybe in working together as a team for a sports goal, we will be able to work together to make the world as a whole better. Bill Stickels III is editor of the Isanti-Chisago County Star. GUEST COLUMN

Long live the Man in Black Well, the Fourth of July got me thinking about America this week, and thinking about America got me thinking about good, old Johnny Cash. I’m sure I heard his songs growing up a thousand times before I ever had any idea I was listening to Johnny Cash. But once you recognize his voice, there’s no mistaking it – deep, rich, gravely, with just a hint of an Arkansas twang. Now, there are lots of singers with great voices, but there’s only one Johnny Cash, and that’s because of the way he delivered his lyrics. There’s something magical about it. He can whip through an entertaining, fast lyric like “I’ve Been Everywhere” or “Rock Island Line;” Guest he can deliver a comic masterpiece Column like “A Boy Named Sue,” or a song like “Folsom Prison Blues” about Mike the darker side of life. He’s a master craftsman with soul, and he has an Gainor honesty of expression that makes you believe every word. When you read a little about his life, you can believe that he really did mean every word when he sang his songs. He grew up in a poor Arkansas family, picking cotton in the fields as a child to help make ends meet. His brother died after getting pulled into a table saw. The family had to flee the flood described in “Five Feet High and Rising.” As an adult, his talent won him fame, but his dark side brought him around into addiction and adultery. His first marriage fell apart. He had a spiritual awakening and found true love with June Carter Cash, but even then he fell back into pills and drink over and over. They say he started wearing his famous all-black outfit because it was easier to keep clean on the road, but he turned that into part of his own mythology with the 1971 song “Man in Black:”

Well, there’s things that never will be right I know, And things need changin’ everywhere you go, But ‘til we start to make a move to make a few things right, You’ll never see me wear a suit of white. Well, we’re doin’ mighty fine, I do suppose, In our streak of lightnin’ cars and fancy clothes, But just so we’re reminded of the ones who are held back, Up front there oughta be a Man In Black.

Most of his songs had that same kind of beat that made “Folsom” so great – a sort of jangly, mid-tempo railroad rhythm that picks up momentum as the song goes along. I can’t get enough of it. I don’t have a favorite tune, although I do love “Folsom Prison Blues” a lot, and you can’t go wrong with his early 1950s recordings. But I really became a fan of Johnny Cash in the 1990s, when he was recording a series of albums on the American Recordings labels. Most of the songs were just Cash playing an acoustic guitar and singing, and with this stripped-down sound he created four albums that are all considered classics. One of the songs he recorded was, “Hurt,” in 2002. The song was written by Trent Reznor of the band Nine Inch Nails (a remarkable artist in his own right), and he’s the first to admit that Cash’s version is better. If you get a chance, watch the video on YouTube sometime, because it’s unforgettable. June Carter Cash died in 2003, and Johnny died four months later, at age 71. Later in 2003, “Hurt” won the Country Music Association award for Single of the Year. It’s a tribute to Johnny Cash as an artist that this last chapter in a long and fascinating career was as remarkable as the man himself. Long live the Man in Black. presented the flags of the different branches of the military; and Chisago County’s veteran services officers and Chisago Lakes Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, organizations which assist veterans in obtaining services and benefits. Richardson also thanked Ecumen North Branch activities staff Ronda Taber and Molly DeFrance, who took the photos for the wall and made sure the wall is up-to-date. North Branch mayor Jim Swenson was invited to speak at the event, which he noted was a real honor. “I hope I get a chance to speak to all of you,” he said to those in attendance. “It’s ironic that we just got done with the 75th anniversary of the landing at Normandy, which, as you know, ended up very well for all of us for this whole world. “There is no greater service than that of a veteran,” Swenson continued. “Throughout history our servicemen and women have fought for our country’s independence, protected us for our freedoms, risen up against our enemies, both foreign and domestic, and continue to do

so in an ever-changing world.” Noting veterans deserve the highest level of honor and gratitude bestowed upon them, Swenson added, “May the wall be a remembrance to all who view it, all who are fortunate to have these Ecumen veterans among us as living reminders of how precious our freedoms are. And, for all veterans who are no longer with us, may they be honored in our hearts.” Following Swenson’s address, Ecumen North Branch Chaplain Karen Cherwien offered

a prayer. The American Legion and VFW presented the flags, and Jenni Thyng led the group in singing “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” After the dedication ceremony, attendees were invited to a barbecue where Thyng provided entertainment. The public can visit the wall in the front lobby at 5379 383rd St., North Branch, during regular business hours Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekends. Local veterans need your help In 2015 North Branch Area Public Schools (NBAPS) was approached by local veterans with a mission in mind: Secure land in North Branch for the purpose of providing the community with a veterans memorial of its own. So many of our residents have served our nation by responding to the ultimate call to duty. Many served with distinction and some sacrificed their lives NB School protecting freedom and security for all. News It has been our honor to work with these local Dr. Deb veterans toward their vision of creating a Henton place for contemplation and tribute to all those who responded to a call to duty over the last several generations. NBAPS wanted to help in this noble effort and offered the use of a beautiful piece of land near the tennis courts – a quiet, peaceful area guarded by towering oak sentinels. It is a wonderful spot that will not only support the memorial, but provides ample parking for public observances and – through the referendum and subsequent construction – public restrooms available to all those that visit. The school district’s design firm,

ATS&R, enthusiastically joined the effort and donated numerous hours to assist our veterans with designing a unique space. For that we are extremely grateful. Since this partnership began, veterans have been raising funds to construct the memorial and have done an incredible job. The city’s Beautification Association has really helped with coordinating these efforts! More is needed, however, before construction can begin. There are several ways you can support this worthwhile effort! Here are a few: - Engraved pavers are available for purchase to honor a veteran. - For those without a veteran to honor, but who still wish to contribute, there is the Wall of Support. - Memorial benches are also available for purchase at the memorial site circle and at the site entrance. Benches include specialized engraving and must be in memory of a veteran or military service-related organization. Much more information can be found about the memorial and support opportunities in the memorial brochure: https://bit.ly/2wMkVNS. If you have questions or would like more information, contact the Beautification Association at: BeautificationNB@gmail.com. Dr. Deb Henton is superintendent of North Branch Area Public Schools.

OUTHOUSES: Organizer not pooped after creating handmade trophies for 30 years FROM PAGE I

that wanted volunteers to help out, and I got elected to help with the parade. So then we started the running race for many years. Then the Jaycees came to me. Randy Miller asked if I would come to their meeting because they wanted to put on an outhouse race.” Gilly attended the meeting with the Jaycees to hear their ideas about starting an outhouse race for Jubilee Days. During the meeting, Gilly understood that it was a little unorganized and that there needed to be a solid plan to get the races off to a good start. “It wasn’t too organized, and I said, ‘You know, we need to get a little serious about this.’ If you’re going to do an outhouse race you can’t just say, ‘We’re going to do an outhouse race.’ You need rules.” OUTHOUSE RULES CREATED Many things needed to be taken into consideration when planning for the new outhouse races. Rules, insurance, and time were needed in order to bring the races to life. “So we started planning the rules,” Gilly said. “How big of an outhouse – motorized, non-motorized, things like that.” Miller knew they needed to come up with their own event, and Gilly knew they needed some rules. Being up for the challenge, he decided he would be the one to perform all official duties – a sort of umpire of the outhouse race. “Everyone else can have fun,” Gilly said, “but I’ll be the guy wearing blaze orange making sure they’re following the rules and staying safe.” Gilly doesn’t laugh about the seri-

ousness of scenarios that can happen during Jubilee Days. He wears blaze orange for a reason. “I’ve been hit by a car during the parade,” he said, “and you’re always in the traffic when you are helping out with things like this.” He takes pride in being the one to officiate the races and hand out the trophies. And that’s another thing. He has been making the trophies for the winner each year since it all started. OUTHOUSE TROPHIES Each year Gilly handcrafts the winner’s trophy that the victor will hold

high in all their new-found glory. Each is unique, but many are made from a creatively cut log with words and pictures wood-burned into it. Creating small details within each trophy every year is something that Gilly enjoys and takes pride in. “I got one of the original outhouse trophies back, returned to me,” he said. “Randy Miller’s dad came up to me on the 25th year of the outhouse races and gave me the first one, the first outhouse award that I made. I cherish it because you know it took time to make that, and I had things like the door opening up on it and a Sears and Roebuck catalog in it and stuff.” After years of making them, he says he has become more streamlined and efficient in creating the awards. The number of trophies Gilly has had to make has also shrunk. In the beginning, besides the winners of the race, less-detailed trophies were awarded for the best costumes and best-designed outhouses. Those awards went by the wayside about 10 years ago. However, the trophy count has again recently increased with the introduction of a junior division. “CELEBRITY” NOTORIETY While the planning of the outhouse races might have started out as “unorganized,” the end results, even in the first year, proved to be a success. Part of that can be credited to then-governor Rudy Perpich happening to be on hand. Perpich helped hand out the trophies and gave it quite an endorsement by calling it a “fun, unique event.” Several years later, KARE11 sports

reporter Eric Perkins did a feature on the event for his well-known “Perk at Play” segments. FUN BUT SAFE The one thing that’s clear when you talk to Gilly about the races is safety. “I’m always thinking of the runners when setting up the running race,” he said, “and with the outhouses, it’s the same. It also takes a lot to keep people out of the streets for the outhouse races.” Things can happen at any time, and Gilly said his volunteers are key to keeping things under control. “We can always use more (volunteers),” he said. “There’s crashes, kids run out onto the street. You know these outhouses weigh almost 500 pounds of wood. I’m always hollering at people. So I’m the official. I make sure the roads are clean and that people stay out of the way.” To sum up the amount of work that goes into running the many events and races during Jubilee Days – it takes a lot of planning and hard work. But if you’re Gilly, you see the reward at the end of the day when you hand out the awards. “Sometimes you feel like you want to quit it,” he said, “but I’m the only one that started the outhouse races that’s still here. But on Saturday at 2 o’clock when we’re running the outhouse race, and then we’re all done and hand out the awards – we say, ‘Yep, we’ve done it again.’” To learn more about the events happening at Isanti Jubilee Days from July 11-14, go to: https://north65chamber. com/events/isanti-rodeo-jubilee-days.

The Veterans Memorial Tribute truck once again was on display during the 11th annual Red Bull Military Appreciation Day held at North Branch Central Park on Sunday, June 30. Did you know? Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot, but cloudy day reached higher than 125 degrees F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

Your Lawn and Garden Guide

How to protect your yard from deer other plants to grow, and wait until after early spring, when deer aren't as concerned with regaining weight lost during the winter, to get them in the ground.

With more than 60 different species of deer worldwide, there's a good chance individuals will have some sort of interaction with these majestic animals at one point during their lifetimes. Deer, which live on all continents except Antarctica, can survive in everything from mountainous areas to wet rainforests to suburban neighborhoods. These herbivores are voracious eaters that will search far and wide for their meals. Home landscapes tend to be easy pickings for foraging deer.

Many people are excited to see deer in their neighborhoods and yards because they can be such graceful creatures to behold. However, once deer start to munch on ornamental trees, annuals and flowering shrubs, the novelty of these animals may wear off. Furthermore, deer also can be covered in ticks that spread illnesses like Lyme disease. Here are some tips to keep deer at bay. · Avoid tasty morsels. Deer like English ivy, lettuces, impatiens, pansies, and hostas. Fruit trees also are targets. Choose

· Use fishing line to deter deer. Put a few stakes in the ground and then run fishing line at a height of about three feet. Deer can sense movement but do not have keen vision. As the deer approach your garden, they'll brush against the "invisible" fishing line and then get spooked off. · Plant plants that produce strong aromas. The experts at Good Housekeeping suggest planting lavender and marigolds, which emit strong aromas. Deer will be reluctant to walk through because the smell can interfere with their ability to find food and assess their environment via their sense of smell.

· Stock up on soap. The tallow in soap helps keep deer away, according to the University of Vermont Extension Department of Plant and Soil Science. Scented soaps like Irish Spring may be especially good at warding off deer. · Plant in levels. Raised beds and sunken gardens can discourage deer from coming into the yard because they aren't avid climbers, offers the home and garden resource This Old House. · Employ harmless scare tactics. Deer are skittish, and any unfamiliar movement or sound may scare them away. Cans hung from strings, sundials and lights can keep them at bay. Deer will seek out an easy meal, but homeowners can take steps to safeguard their trees, flowers and shrubs.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, a friend has something to confide, so make sure you are ready to hear what this person has to say. It is alright to be a little apprehensive.

and 15 cities in three counties are encouraging others to help send. U.S. Highway 61, also known as the “Blues Highway” was one of the original highways constructed within the U.S. highway system. Built in 1926, the 1,400-mile roadway extended from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada until 1990 when it was retired from north of Wyoming, Minn., to near Duluth as its alignment was concurrent with I-35. Through three counties–Chisago, Pine and Carlton–the highway was decommissioned (no Historic or “Old” U.S. Highway 61). In 2012, at the suggestion of a Chisago County commissioner, “Old Hwy 61” signs were purchased to place along the corridor in those three counties. This acknowledgement of the importance of Old Hwy 61 gained momentum when a coalition formed to raise awareness and highlight the value of Old Hwy 61 to increase tourism and promote local economies through a collaborative, consistent message.
