School board lays out plan for filling vacancy BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

Because of the vacancy on the ISD911 School Board that was created by the removal of former board member Kyle Johnson, the board has come up with a process to fill that vacant seat based on state statutes. At the monthly school board meeting held Thursday, June 23, Superintendent Dr. Ray Queener laid out the state-mandated steps that the board is

required to take. The first step in the process will be for the board to appoint someone to the seat until a special election can be held. Applications for the vacancy will be available and accepted through the Superintendent’s Office beginning 8 a.m. on June 30 and ending on July 12 at 1 p.m, according to District Communications Coordinator Shawna Carpentier. Xtreme Bulls add kick to rodeo BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

There’s a dilemma facing organizers of the annual Isanti Rodeo Jubilee Days – any time you have an event that has been going on for 40 years, the need to mix traditional favorites with new options is key to keeping the event vibrant. And for this year’s event, the Jubilee Days Committee feels they have done just that. “Raising the bar for this annual fundraiser event is always a challenge,” said chairman Tom Pagel. “We have always had such a large, supportive fan base, and our goal each year is

to make this a fun family event and add something new whenever we can.” This year the committee has added one event they feel will really add an extra kick to the festivities – an “Xtreme Bulls” competition taking place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 10. “We applied for sanctioning,” said Pagel, “and we are extremely happy that this will be the first Xtreme Bulls event sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association to take place in the Great Lakes Region. In partnership with Championship Pro Rodeo, this event promises to bring many of the top SEE RODEO, PAGE 5

A missing Cambridge resident who was described as vulnerable has been found after being reported missing for nearly one week. According to Cambridge Police Chief Tim Dwyer, Stafford 41-year-old Jenni- Stafford fer Lynn Stafford was last seen leaving her Cambridge residence on Wednesday, June 22, at about 10:30 p.m. with

a male. Stafford has a medical condition which requires daily medication, so a missing persons report was issued for her. According to the report, as of Tuesday afternoon, June 28, it was believed that she was no longer in the Cambridge area due to her phone records. “Her phone was last known to be on on Saturday, June 25, at 11:15 p.m. in Bloomington,” said Dwyer. “(Therefore) we believe she is no longer in the area and was last seen in a vehicle with a male acquaintance. Motorcyclist killed in crash despite new warning system BY BILL STICKELS III EDITOR@COUNTYSTAR.COM

A 70-year-old Coon Rapids man died last Thursday, June 23, as a result of an accident at the intersection of Highway 47 and County Road 8 (261st Avenue) in Stanford Township, west of Isanti. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Walter Hasbrook, 70, died when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a Ford Crown Victoria driven by Brittany Reid, 20, of Braham. According to the accident report, Reid was stopped at the stop sign heading westbound on County Road 8 and then pulled out to go south on Highway 47 when her vehi-

cle collided with Hasbrook’s motorcycle. Reid, along with two passengers, 14-yearold Martese Cowles and Reid’s son, Toby Reid-Newton, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The location of the accident, commonly known as “Mau’s Corner,” has a history of serious accidents. The last fatal accident happened on July 26, 2015, under eerily similar circumstances. In that case, 70-year-old Dexter Olson, of Robbinsdale, and 64-year-old John Syrovatka died when the motorcycle they were on collided with a car that also had been stopped on westbound County Road 8 attempting to turn south onto Highway 47. Last fall the Minnesota Department of

Transportation installed “Rural Intersection Conflict Warning System” (RICWS) signage at the location after it was designated a “high risk” intersection. The RICWS features a constantly lit LED light reading “Entering Traffic” visible in both directions on County Road 8, along with flashing yellow lights similar to those at railroad crossings, that are triggered by sensors in the pavement by vehicles moving on Highway 47. According to MNDOT’s website, RICWSs have been installed at 50 locations across the state with the expectation they will reduce the number of crashes at those intersections by 25-30 percent.

Military Appreciation Day raises funds and spirits for overseas soldiers BY MEGAN BERGMAN NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

The Bo Phillips Band’s song “21 Guns” booms out of the loudspeakers as volunteer DJ Cheezer, aka Chuck Chaika, beckons participants to come sign up for the silent auction items at the Red Bulls Military Appreciation Day this past Sunday at Central Park in North Branch. The annual event, in its eighth year, offered military vehicles on display, free kids’ activities, a classic car show with over 100 vehicles, food vendors and booths and demonstrations by local organizations such as Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, Wreaths for the Fallen, St. Cloud Veterans Hospital, Acres for Life Therapy, Wellness Equine Assistance and many more. The silent auction raised money to assist in packaging, shipping and purchasing items to be sent to local troops serving around the world. “This originally started in Stacy,” recalled Chairman Bob Schule, of Citizens Supporting Our Armed Forces, the organization behind the event. “The mayor of Stacy at the time, John Daher, wanted to do something for the troops, so the town adopted the 34th Red Bull infantry division and the 101st Airborne.” People from the community raised mon-

ey and sent care packages to the troops that were serving overseas. The program then developed into the Citizens Supporting Our Armed Forces with the same goal to send items to soldiers to meet their needs and lift their spirits. “This time of year, they want things like sunscreen SPF 50 or more,” said Schule. “Or coffee, beef jerky, stuff for exercising like muscle milk, although I don’t know when they have the time for that. Maybe in their sleep,” he joked. Care package items vary depending on the time of year they are shipped. The organization primarily sends care packages to the 34th Red Bull infantry division and their families, but it does extend beyond to coordinate with other divisions in need of donations. The goal, Schule states, is to send the items that troops need as often as they can, to as many as they can. The organization’s website also declares that 100 percent of all cash donations are used to send the care packages or to help families who live in the area while their spouses are stationed overseas. For more information on the program or to donate visit www.csoaf.com.

WreathsForTheFallen.org collected donations during the Red Bulls Military Appreciation Day. Their mission is to honor our veterans (and their families) by providing wreaths for the Minnesota State Veterans Cemeteries in December of each year. The National Remembrance Ceremony for placing the wreaths takes place at 11:00 a.m. on a Saturday in December. This timing coincides with like ceremonies at veterans’ cemeteries across the nation and in other countries as well. Assistance for the wreath laying is provided by The Minnesota Patriot Guard, Brainerd and St. Cloud squadrons of the Civil Air Patrol, many soldiers from Camp Ripley and the general public.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Do we really need a YMCA? To the editor, What in the world is Howard Lewis thinking of? If the city of Andover isn’t able to support a YMCA, how in the world is the city Cambridge? We already have the highest taxes in the county. There is no way our city would be able to come up with $150,000 to support such a facility. Sure, the Andover facility looks really great when you drive by it. Surely there are far more better ways for our city to support our community, like a new library. I hope and pray that our citizens/voters are smart enough to realize that we are not in a financial position to propose such a pipe dream of one individual. Darlene Melland Cambridge

Thanks for pancake breakfast support To the editor, The Cambridge Lions Club thanks everyone for their support for a successful airport pancake breakfast on June 19. A special thank you to Kent Schutte for the use of his hangar; also to the city council, the Airport Commission and EAA Chapter 237 for their hard work in setting up and preparing for the event. And most of all to the community turnout and support. Proceeds from the Cambridge Lions pancake breakfast are used for local community needs. Darlene Melland Cambridge Lions Secretary

GUEST COLUMN

What we learned after our house burned down BY SHARON RAISANEN NEWS@MORAMINN.COM

A few weeks ago my husband and I lost our home and all our belongings in a devastating fire, but fortunately no one, including our puppies, was hurt or injured. There are life-changing moments that happen in everyone’s lives, and we are discovering that probably the most important thing out of all of this is what we are learning through the process. As hard as it was to watch our home and everything in it disappear in raging flames, we told ourselves that it “was just stuff.” But lots of stuff has sentimental value and can never be replaced. The gigantic Finnish family Bible I had inherited because I was the oldest child in the family. In it were the names of several generations of my kin, lovingly hand-entered by my ancestors. Gone were photo albums, an antique icebox I had refinished, as well as my grandmother’s vanity, and of course, much more. But tragedies happen. Floods, fire and tornadoes can happen at any time and affect anyone. We tend to think it won’t happen to us and for most, it never will. But if the unthinkable happens, will you be prepared to cope with it? My husband’s brother is a pastor in Malmo and the day of the fire he told Rick, “You’re going to learn many things throughout this process which you, in turn, can use to help others.” Here are some things we’ve learned: 1. Make a hard copy of phone numbers of your closest family members and store it in a wallet, with a close friend

or neighbor or in a glove box of a vehicle. As the fire was roaring, a neighbor asked if I had called my kids. My phone was somewhere in that inferno along with all of their phone numbers. With cell phones, not many of us know people’s actual phone numbers, and my family was frantically trying to get ahold of me and I had no way to reach them to let them know we were safe (Facebook posts sent news and photos of the fire all across the world – a nephew visiting Czechoslovakia saw the post and alerted family). 2. Take photos of everything in your home and outbuildings. Go room by room, photographing inside closets, drawers and every wall. Store those photos off-site. I had done such an inventory several years ago and had the CDs in a

desk at work so I will now have some reference as we try to recreate the contents of our home. Our adjuster told us only 1 percent of people have done this. 3. Invest in a safety deposit box. The yearly cost is minimal and so worth the investment. Unfortunately, we did not have one. We should have had our vehicle titles, passports, home abstract and other important papers stored there. 4. Passwords: If you are trying to be tech savvy, you create numerous passwords as suggested, but need a list to keep them straight. It’s okay to have a list in your desk drawer, but put a similar list at your desk at work, in the safety deposit box or with a trusted family member. 5. Computer backups: I purchased a backup drive and regularly backed up

my computer. Unfortunately, that drive was sitting next to my laptop and was destroyed. Buy two. Keep one in that trusty safe deposit box or somewhere off-site and keep another at home, while you regularly do backups. Then switch them out every month or two. 6. Keep a set of spare keys in a safe place outside or with a neighbor. We kept our keys in the ignition (I know, probably not a wise decision) which made it possible for us to drive our vehicles away from the fire and have transportation after. 7. Review your insurance coverage on a regular basis to make sure you have adequate coverage. We were fortunate to have an agent who advised us when we should make needed changes to our policy. 8. Most importantly, we have learned how very blessed we are with so many wonderful family, friends, neighbors, community members and co-workers. The outpouring of love and support we have received following the fire has overwhelmed and humbled us. Complete strangers have reached out in so many ways, and we are still trying to absorb the enormity of it all. So we would encourage you – don’t procrastinate. Don’t think it won’t happen to you. Do it now. Be prepared. Be thankful for and look for the blessings. As awful as it all was, we are trying to think of things to be thankful for every day and moving forward one step at a time. RODEO: Champion bull riding added

CHISAGO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Storms roared through Isanti and Chisago counties on Saturday, June 25, knocking down trees and causing power outages. This tree was downed in North Branch.

Storms take out power, topple trees BY BILL STICKELS III NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

After a day that saw heat indexes reach over 100 degrees, storms packing high winds, frequent lightning and heavy rain raced through the Cambridge and North Branch areas on Saturday, June 25, causing considerable power outages and some physical damage in its wake. Although hit by the same storm, the two towns saw very different levels of damage. In Cambridge, the main issue was an approximately hour-and-a-half power outage that affected nearly 3,000 East Central Energy customers. “The outage in the Cambridge and Isanti areas originated from the Cambridge Industrial

Substation on the Great River Energy (ECE’s wholesale power supplier) side,” said ECE’s Tina Lanhart. “The outage investigation revealed a tree on the transmission line between Cambridge and Isanti.” North Branch only saw about 150 customers lose power. “System-wide, ECE had about 199 outages affecting approximately 7,000 members during the storm,” said Lanhart. “Outages were caused by wind, trees and branches falling onto lines and by lightning.” In North Branch, the biggest issue was with downed trees and branches. The brunt of the damage appeared to be on the east side of town, including large branches down along Highway 95.

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon held an awards ceremony in St. Paul where he recognized the Refuge Network for their commitment to and partnership with the Secretary of State’s Safe at Home address confidentiality program. The Safe at Home program is designed to assist Minnesotans who wish to keep the location of their physical residence private for personal safety reasons, often because they are victims of domestic violence and stalking. The Refuge Network is one of five programs being honored for their work in 2015, and have partnered with Safe at Home since 2007. In addition to the organization being

honored, Char Weidendorf and Carolyn Gustafson, two employees of the Refuge Network, are being recognized for their service as Safe at Home Application Assistants, specially trained to enroll people in the Safe at Home program. A person who wants to enroll in Safe at Home meets face-to-face with an Application Assistant to discuss their safety concerns, and the Assistant works with them to determine whether enrolling is a good safety step for the person to take. Participants enrolled in the Safe at Home program use a post office box as their legal address for all purposes so they can go about their daily lives without risk of the persons they fear discovering their physical address. First class mail sent to the post office box is forwarded to the participant’s physical address by the Secretary of State.

Rolling Stones tribute will benefit vets VACANCY: School board

seat could stay vacant until November 8 election

SUBMITTED NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

The Rolling Stones tribute band Tumblin’ Dice will perform a concert Friday, July 8, to raise funds for two projects benefiting local veterans. The concert, scheduled for 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Wintergreen’s Golf & Grill, 306 Credit Union Drive NE, Isanti, will serve as a celebration and fundraiser for a veterans’ home and PTSD counseling proposed for Isanti County. Veterans Journey Home (www. JourneyHomeMN.org) is a nonprofit organization committed to working with disabled military veterans and their families to provide permanent supportive housing and help them rebuild their lives, integrate back into society and regain their productivity and self-worth. “Veterans Journey Home is excited to work with Alan Duff again to bring a disabled-veteran home to Cambridge following our success last year in Shoreview,” said Blake Huffman, Executive Director. “We expect construction for a new Cambridge vets home to start in the fall of 2016.”

Tumblin’ Dice band will play Rolling Stones favorites at the July 8 benefit to raise funds for two veterans’ projects in Isanti County.

The Mission Project (www. MissionProject 2005.org) is a nonprofit organization committed to taking care of military service members. The group is launching a PTSD initiative, including summer camp and confidential support groups, for service members adjusting to post-military service life. A south metro support group began last month in Lakeville, and the Mission Project is looking to initiate a northern metro support group in the fall of 2016.

Sponsors have already contributed over $1,000 to help bring these two initiatives to the Isanti County area. The Tumblin’ Dice concert is free, but donations will be accepted with 100 percent of proceeds going to these two veteran nonprofit organizations. Further information about the concert and the two initiatives can be obtained by contacting Alan Duff at duff@usfamily.net or at (612) 850-5404.

vehicle has been recovered in the South Metro and the male, who is now a person of interest, is being questioned by authorities in an attempt to locate the female’s whereabouts.” The hunt for Stafford was ended after she was found safe later in the evening on Tuesday, June 28.

“Jennifer Lynn Stafford was located by Cambridge PD Sgt. Machin at a residence in South St. Paul,” said Dwyer. “She is now safe and sound in the custody of the Cambridge Police Department and family.” According to Dwyer, the circumstances behind her disappearance are still under investigation.

“Two persons of interest were identified with the help of the Hastings Police Department and are in custody on unrelated criminal charges,” he said. “Our criminal investigation continues, but we are happy to report she has been located. A special thank you to everyone who assisted in this investigation.”

The board will then hold a special board meeting at 5:30 p.m. on July 19 to interview all eligible applicants. The board could vote on an appointment at that time or wait and vote during the next regular meeting scheduled for July 21. The appointment will be made by a simple majority vote and will not be official until after a 30day period during which a valid petition rejecting the appointee could be submitted. Whoever the board chooses to fill the seat, however, would only be in the position until a special election is held in conjunction with the general election on Nov. 8. On that ballot voters will see candidates for three seats up for election for normal four-year terms, as well as the special election to fill the remaining two years of Johnson’s vacated seat. According to election rules, a person can run for either the four-year seat or the twoyear seat, but cannot be considered for both. Because of the short term of the board’s appointee (essentially less than 90 days), there appears to be a possibility that no qualified applicants would present themselves, opting instead to simply wait for the special election. According to Carpentier, there is no set of rules that the board must follow if that were to occur. “The statute requiring appointment does not address what should be done in the case no one applies for the vacant position,” she said. “It is possible the board would consider extending the application period should that occur. There would be a point, however, in which there would not be sufficient

time to complete the appointment process prior to the November election.”

IN OTHER BUSINESS • The board was given a presentation and demonstration by the Bluejacket gymnastics team as part of the athletics and activities showcase. The team also presented the board with a thank you for the board’s recent purchase of a new spring floor. • An update was given by Activities Director Mark Solberg on the attempted formation of a Bluejacket Hall of Fame. • The board voted on updated versions of several student policies. The biggest policy change was the requirement to exclude medical cannabis from the list of prescription drugs students could bring to school and leave with the school nurse for administering. The board also approved numerous revisions to the student handbooks, most of which were grammatical corrections and revisions to bring the school’s handbooks into conformity. • The board approved donations from various parties in the sum of $9,862. • Director of Finance Kris Crocker presented a revised 2015-2016 and preliminary 2016-2017 budget that was approved by the board. • The board approved a rough draft for the 20162017 school calendar that was presented by Carpentier to be delivered to homes the week of July 11. • Suspended the expulsion of a student due to the student withdrawing from the district with the understanding that if the student were to re-enroll in the next year, expulsion proceedings would be reactivated.

How to make July 4th safe for your pet LEAVE YOUR PET HOME You can always opt to not take your pet to fireworks displays.

SUBMITTED WWW.TRIPSWITHPETS.COM

The Fourth of July is one of the most stressful and potentially dangerous times of the year for pets. Many pet parents assume that if their pet is not afraid of thunder or other loud noises, they will not be bothered by fireworks. This is not necessarily true. Even pets who normally are not bothered by thunder and other loud noises are often frightened and panicked by the cumulative effects of the fireworks, the excited voices outside, and being left alone inside the house. If pets are left outside and unattended, the noise often drives them to run away. In fact, the July 4th holiday is a very busy time for animal shelters across the U.S. They report taking in a higher number dogs that run off during firework festivities. In addition, many police stations log higher volumes of stray dog calls and barking complaints on July 4th compared to any other day of the year. By planning ahead and taking some common sense precautions, you can help ensure your pet is happy and safe this Fourth of July.

DON’T LEAVE YOUR PET IN A CAR Do not leave your pet alone in the car during fireworks (or ever). With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects even death in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen. Leaving your pet alone in the car is never a good idea. However, if your pet is most comfortable in the car, some pet parents find that driving around with their pet in the car helps to calm their pet. KEEP PETS COMFORTABLE AND CONTAINED Keep pets in your home in a comfortable and quiet area with the shades drawn. If your pet is crate-trained, then his crate is a great choice. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you’ve removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at

LET YOUR PET FEEL SAFE If your pet seeks comfort in a bathtub, under a bed or other small space, let him. Do not try to lure him out. If the space is safe and it makes him feel more secure, let him be.

DON’T LEAVE A PET UNATTENDED Never leave pets outside unattended. Even in a fenced yard or on a chain is not safe. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn’t leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death. BILL STICKELS III | COUNTY STAR

normal volume to keep your pet company while you’re attending Fourth of July picnics, parades and other celebrations. CONSULT A VET FOR ANXIETY RELIEF Consult your vet for anxiety relief. If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your vet for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he will experience during fireworks displays.

GIVE PETS IDENTIFICATION TAGS Make sure your pet is wearing an identification tag. If your pet does run off, proper ID can help ensure a safe return. In addition, it is also recommended to microchip your pet. This is an added safeguard should your pet lose his ID tag. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

‘Happy Birthday, MOPS!’ Local chapter celebrates 10 years of supporting moms of preschoolers BY JENNIFER KOTILA NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

It has been 10 years since Jennifer Martens and Shannon Muehlberg worked together to organize a local Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) chapter, and the organization recently celebrated its 10th birthday at North Isanti Baptist Church. “My husband, kids and I had just moved to Cambridge from northern Wisconsin, where a friend and I had started a MOPS group,” Martens said. “MOPS had already made such an impact on my mothering that I told my former group I would search for a new MOPS group when we were settled in Minnesota.” Although she found a great MOPS group to attend in Zimmerman, the distance to drive there made that group less appealing. “Cambridge seemed like a great community to offer a MOPS group, so I asked Shannon if she would join me in starting a group at North Isanti Baptist,” Martens added. “We saw a great need, beginning in our subdivision, for a group to support, encourage and minister to mothers of preschoolers,” she continued. “We also knew of the need we had ourselves to be the best moms, wives and women that we could be. I was and am passionate about moms having the support and encouragement they need most during the precious time of raising young children.” Sharing one of her favorite memories of the beginning of MOPS, Martens said

‘“We believe that incubating hearts and giving just-because hugs can change the course of history.’ MOPS Mission Statement she and Muehlberg had to get the word out to the community about the new MOPS chapter, so they put their youngest children in wagons and pulled them around the neighborhood looking for homes with “signs” of children. “Any home with a swing set or toys outside received a visit from us, and an invitation to attend MOPS,” Martens said. “It was fun and exciting to get out there and turn our passion into action.” Thinking of the first MOPS meeting brings a smile to Martens’ face. “Shannon and I were the ‘leadership team,’ and, after putting all the details together to kick off our first meeting, we opened the doors,” she said. “We didn’t know what to expect for attendance and ended up having 12 moms.” By the end of the first year, the newly formed MOPS chapter had a fully staffed leadership team, and more than 30 moms were attending the twice-monthly meetings. “It was tremendous growth,” she noted. THE IMPORTANCE OF MOPS TO AREA MOMS As MOPS International’s mission states, “We believe that incubating hearts and giving just-because hugs can

change the course of history. That’s why we connect moms all over the world to a community of women in their own neighborhoods who meet together to laugh, cry and embrace the journey of motherhood.” MOPS chapters encourage women to be more honest, feel more equipped, and to find their identity by journeying alongside one another. “MOPS is so important for area moms,” Martens said, noting that every mother of preschoolers, no matter where she has been, what she has done, or how she is choosing to live her life, is welcome to the organization. “[The group] is an important part of equipping her to be all that God designed her to be. It is a place that uniquely values mothering and what its contribution is to a mom, her children and family, and society as a whole – for both the future and also for eternity. In my opinion, there is no greater place for a mom and her children.” THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING AT MOPS Not only do moms connect with one another, but they also hear from speakers about various life, marriage and child-raising topics. Moms also share a “delicious” brunch during each meeting, Marten said. “At these meetings, moms have an opportunity to get together and learn from a variety of speakers that share on relevant topics, work on fun projects to keep or give away, and gather in discussion groups to talk about what they’ve learned,” Marten said, noting that moms also lean on each other for advice and support. MOPS has also provided a dynamic leadership-building structure, taking moms who have felt led and training them into places of leadership within the local or regional MOPS group(s), according to Martens. “The MOPS Leadership Team is comprised of mainly mothers of preschoolers who desire to learn and grow as a leader. Often this leadership experience leads to opportunities to further serve in the local church or community,” Martens said. Another favorite memory of Martens’ is the growth that came from the chapter of MOPS she founded. Some of the moms who had to travel to attend this chapter started their own MOPS groups. “To see a new branch develop from the growth we experienced locally is beautiful and exciting,” she said. “We saw some of the leaders from that group at a leadership development event recently, and their group is still going strong.” THE IMPORTANCE OF VOLUNTEERS TO MOPS Many volunteers are needed to run the group and provide free childcare for up to 70 preschool children, age newborn through kindergarten. Volunteers

help provide a safe and encouraging place for children to play and interact, while giving moms a chance to connect. Many of the volunteers have been with the group from the start, including Jan Sundberg, who volunteered with childcare from the beginning, becoming a mentor to the moms of the group two years ago. “God placed in my heart a love to work with children back from being a nurse and helping with preschool screening,” said Sundberg, who moved to this area when her husband retired in 2005. At the time, Sundberg began working in an assisted living facility, but she also wanted to find something working with children to balance things out. Thus, she began working with the MOPPETS, as the children of MOPS moms are called, along with her good friend Elaine Autrey. Autrey still works with the children as Jan transitioned to being a mentor to the moms. “I believe in the ministry to children and to moms, and this was a way to keep me energized,” Sundberg said, noting that at her age one would think this type of thing would tire her out. Having raised two sons, being involved with MOPS has also given Sundberg the opportunity to share her life with daughter-like women as she has gotten to know them. “These women have become so special to me,” she said. “They are a source of joy to me. I love working with children, but I really love working with moms. They are some really special young women.” Throughout the years, Sundberg noted she has seen some really neat relationships form between the moms of the group. They help each other out in many areas of life, for instance, taking turns bringing meals to a mom who has just had a baby or is dealing with another circumstance in life. She has also seen answered prayers, with the groups seeing a need, praying for it, and God answering that prayer. Sundberg said she will occasionally run into children from MOPS she has worked with over the years while out in the community. “It’s fun to reconnect and see them doing well,” she said. “They let me know I’ve had a part in bringing them joy and being their friend.”

Former Bomber John Larson threw for two touchdowns, leading the North All-Stars to a 38-19 victory over the South during the annual Minnesota Football Coaches Association Tackle Cancer All-Star game. Larson will now play for Minnesota-Duluth starting this fall.

Braham senior John Larson had the opportunity to participate in the 43rd Minnesota Football Coaches Association Tackle Cancer MN All-Star Football Game at Husky Stadium June 25 in St. Cloud. The game showcased outstanding senior players from the 2015 Minnesota high school football season. The players and coaches represented 83 schools, 17 districts and 39 sub-districts, all selected by the MN Football Coaches Association.

Larson’s impressive season for the Bombers earned him a spot as one of two quarterbacks on the North team and as a team captain. In the game, both North quarterbacks threw two touchdown passes – the four TDs tied a game record. Plus, with the two South quarterbacks also throwing for TDs, it was only the second game in All-Star history to have four quarterbacks throw touchdown passes. With the help of Larson’s two TDs, the North defeated the South 38-19 for the win. Before then, the South had won the last four games.

academic success by being one of the 12 players in the state to receive the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association Scholarship. Filley will be attending Luther College in the fall, where he will continue his baseball career. “Isaiah did a lot of great things for us on the field and no doubt, he excelled in the classroom too,” said Smrekar. “But he is an even better person. He is a young man that will have a lot of success in the years ahead no matter where he goes or what he does. He is top notch!”

Food Hub connects growers to buyers via web BY JENNIFER KOTILA NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

For approximately 10 years, the Women’s Environmental Institute envisioned creating a food hub to provide fresh, organic produce grown by local farmers to consumers in the North Branch area. This year that vision came to fruition when WEI received a grant from the US Department of Agriculture. In the pilot year of the project, the North Circle Food Hub will be a virtual food hub in which consumers can go online to place an order for pick up at the North Branch Farmers Market Fest. The farmers market takes place Fridays in front of the County Market in North Branch. “The idea is to connect local consumers with local farmers and to support small- to medium-sized local farms through providing visibility and new ways to market,” said Tacy Call of WEI. The overall goal is to create a regional food system with a facility to which the farmers can bring their produce that allows them the potential to add value to the produce through flash freezing, canning or other means, according to Call. Many food hubs across the country have aggregation facilities where farmers can bring produce to clean, store, pack and add value, Call noted. “That goal seems a bit far at present without a brick and mortar structure,” Call said. “For now, as we gain momentum, we hope to be able to make our service mobile, increasing drop sites and farmers participating.” By being a part of the North Circle Food Hub, farmers can market produce under the North Circle Food Hub name and logo, while receiving free advertisement through the website. The website will also provide news highlighting the farms and farmers, along with their values, so people in the community can become more familiar with them. Many of the farmers working with North Circle Food Hub also have their own stand at the Friday Farmers Mar-

More than a dozen local farmers are participating in the food hub this year, providing a wide variety of farm-fresh, organic produce. The farmers are all either certified organic or using organic farming practices. The benefit to the customers that use North Circle Food Hub to order fresh produce is the ability to connect with local farmers who are using organic and sustainable farming methods. Joining the Food Hub as a buyer is similar to joining a CSA (community supported agriculture). However, instead of being locked into whatever seasonal produce is in the box each week, customers can pick and choose the exact items they want, in the quantities they want. Fresh foods plentiful thanks to farmers markets BY KAY WEBER NEWS@COUNTYSTAR.COM

Local farmers markets are highlighting fresh produce and products close to home these days more than ever before, and customers like it. Everything from organic vegetables and herb plants to homemade jams or specialty bakery items are being offered. One may also get the opportunity to talk with the local grower or artisan to learn more about what they have to offer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Farmers Market Directory listed 8,268 markets in 2014 – up 76 percent from 2008 – and as farmers markets continue to grow, they are filling a niche for people all across the United States. A USDA survey found that the main reasons people buy from farmers markets are: freshness, good taste, a shorter distance from home and a desire to support local businesses. Isanti and Chisago counties support eight farmers markets, each with its own focus and style. Some provide a wide variety of produce. Others add food vendors where visitors can grab a bite to eat. Some include crafts, soaps or specialty food products. A few have musical entertainment as well, adding to what can become a local social event. The market is part of the MN Grower’s Association and follows state guidelines, according to Piatz. Gini Ende, from Belle Ranch, is a long-term vendor at the market. She sells berries, as well as a wide variety of popular jellies and jams with combinations like Strawberry Vanilla, Raspberry Jalapeno or Hot Pepper Jam. She has taken the state-required cottage food safety training to ensure product safety to her customers. “What I enjoy most about being a vendor at a local farmers market,” she said, “is providing my customers with fresh produce.” Isanti County also boasts markets in Isanti held 2-6 p.m. Fridays in Eagle Park and Braham Farmers Market open 3-7 p.m. Thursdays in Freedom Park. North Branch is fortunate to have two farmers markets. The first, called North Branch Farmers Market, operates from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays from July to October at Member’s Coop Credit Union at 8th Avenue and Main Street. The market has been serving the community for over 30 years. The second, named North Branch Farmers Market Fest,

is held on Fridays from 2:306:30 p.m. in the southwest lot of County Market. It includes food booths and musical entertainment. This market is sponsored by the North Branch Beautification Association, according to Market Coordinator Laura Scaramell. The nonprofit helps beautify the community in various ways, and the partnership with local growers and artisans has proved successful following the market’s inaugural run last year. With summer in full bloom, this is an opportune time to get out and about. The taste of freshly-grown produce and local artisans’ talents are worth exploring.

“Community Waters” was the theme for this year’s Poster & Essay contest sponsored by the Chisago Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) for 6th grade students from the North Branch Middle School. Paris Kopp won first place and $50. Miaya Volkman won second place and $25.

This year’s theme provided students with the opportunity to learn about the many facets of water, why water resources are so important and how citizens can better protect and preserve water in their own watersheds. The posters were judged at the local level on impact of conservation message (50 percent), originality (30 percent) and artistic arrangement (20 percent).

All students who made a poster were given a candy treat from the SWCD for their participation. To view the artwork visit www.chisagoswcd.org/poster_contest. htm. The SWCD wishes to thank the teachers who took advantage of this teaching opportunity, and to all the young artists who made the judging extremely difficult.

Safeguard Yourself from Summertime Ailments and Accidents Summer is often marked by vacations, recreational events and relaxing moments spent by the pool or on the beach. But when the weather heats up, so can potential health hazards that can ruin all of the fun. The following are some of the more common summertime ailments and how to avoid them. • Lawn and garden injuries: Lawn and garden injuries may not be common, but men, women and children should exercise caution when using lawn and garden equipment. Wear protective shoes and gloves and safety goggles. Remember to turn off any motorized tools before attempting to repair or unclog the blades. • Swimmer’s ear: Water that remains in the ear canal after swimming can make the ear a breeding ground for swimmer’s ear, which is a bacterial infection. If water remains in your ear for more than one night, visit an ear, nose and throat specialist.

• Insect bites and stings: Insects return when temperatures rise. Mosquitoes may be the biggest nuisance, but biting flies and wasps also make formidable foes. Use insect repellent to keep the bugs away. Wear long pants and check for ticks after hiking. • Boating accidents: Many boating accidents can be attributed to inexperience with the vessel and failure to take proper safety precautions on the water. Make sure everyone on the boat wears a life jacket, and follow proper boating protocol throughout your trip. • Dehydration: The body needs extra water on hot days, especially when spending ample time outdoors. Dehydration can cause dizziness and dry mouth and may make you feel faint. Always drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, which can contribute to dehydration when consumed in excess. • Heat stroke results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures – usually in combination with dehydration. Common symptoms of heat stroke include a core body temperature that may be greater than 105 degrees Fahrenheit, nausea, seizures, confusion, disorientation, and sometimes loss of consciousness or coma. Heat stroke is the most serious form of heat injury. If you suspect that someone has heat stroke -- also known as sunstroke – call 911 immediately and give first aid until paramedics arrive.

We can celebrate our Dependence Day The Fourth of July is a celebration of our independence from England. Flags, parades, fireworks and anything red, white and blue will be evident on Monday. Our two presidential candidates have chosen campaign slogans “Stronger Together” and “Make America great again!” that promise to strengthen our position. The 4th of July is a good day to consider positions taken by our founding fathers reFocus garding a dependence on Faith upon God that made us great and strong. “It cannot be emphaMark sized too strongly or too Radeke often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religion but on the gospel of Jesus Christ.” – Patrick Henry “Do not let anyone claim tribute of American patriotism if they even attempt to remove religion from politics.” – George Washington Farewell Address to Nation

“The 1st Amendment has created a wall of separation between church and state, but that wall is a one-directional wall, it keeps the government from running the church, but it makes sure that Christian principles will always stay in government.” – President Thomas Jefferson in an address to Danbury Baptists Joshua was a leader of Israel in the Old Testament. He was old and was passing the leadership to another. His farewell speech to the nation contains a call to remain dependent upon God. He says in Joshua 23:6-11: “Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left. Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. But you are to hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have until now. “The Lord has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. One of you routs a thousand, because the Lord your God fights for you, just as He promised. So be very careful to love the

Lord your God.” He continues in Joshua 24:14-18: “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the river and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” If, as a nation, we must respond like those listening to Joshua, we will be stronger and great again regardless of who our president is next 4th of July. The people responded to Joshua’s words by saying, “We too will serve the Lord, because He is our God.” During your picnics, gatherings, fireworks and rocket’s red glare, remember our dependence upon God this Independence Day. Playgrounds get upgrades thanks to volunteers, donations

BILL STICKELS III | COUNTY STAR

A large gathering of adults and kids gathered for a ceremony to kick off the playground upgrade at North Branch’s Central Park on Tuesday, June 28. The funds for the upgrade were made possible by a grant from the “Places to Play” program which is a collaboration between U.S. Bank and the Minnesota Vikings.
